    Another reason is Quebec main charging system is owned by Hydro Quebec and all Quebec citizens. Their recharging systems works very well and as good as Tesla. Electricity are also very cheap and green at 98% via hydro, wind and few others. We also have batteries makers and rare metals including the cleanest Graphite production in the world via Nouveau Monde.

    Quebec gets a $12000 rebate and it's being reduced in 2025 and eliminated in 2026 , so it's driving up sales of EV's 😉 also we have a fairly good recharge network 😉

      And yet per capita BC is crushing Quebec them (and everywhere other than California). We led california until the combination of IRA and state incentives of up to $15k off a model 3 pushed them ahead in 2022.

      @@BlackTBird What are you talking about??? EVs work in the cold, where as some ICE vehicles need a block heater to start in the cold. I don't know anyone that has an Invertor Generator. One more thing, in Quebec much of the electricity is from renewables!!!

    Hi from Canada! Well Viking, please come to Canada as it's a great place and we'd be pleased to see you here! The All Electric Show is the first week of September this year in Vancouver so you've got a great reason to come up! When you get here you'll see what citizens are paying for petro/gas/fuel and then you'll know why we're switching to EV'S... Canada has massive amounts of hydro-electric generation so our electrical rates are reasonable which adds to the decision to purchase EV's. The Tesla supercharger network is well established and continues to grow although it's always cheaper to charge at home. BTW, if you end up visiting around the Vancouver/WHistler region you'll find tons of your fellow country mates skiing up a storm!

    In 2017 Ontario had a $14,000.00 incentive plus up to $2,000.00 on charger/installation. Got my first EV 2017. No brainer. 9 cents kwh

      I cashed in on that rebate and bought a 2018 Bolt...just before the rebate was cancelled :)

    In America, I feel that there is such a strong disinformation campaign, most likely funded by fossil fuel industry that many people I speak to look at me as if they should feel sorry for me when I tell them that I own an EV. They all have a similar story that EV's breakdown all the time and that they are far more expensive to purchase than ICE vehicles and also that they don't have any realistic range. When I have taken a few of them for a ride in my Tesla model Y the one thing that they are flabbergasted by is just how smooth and comfortable the ride is. It's like riding on air they tell me. In 2024 the $7500 tax credit is applied at the time of purchase now, so the only way you would miss out on this is if you are outside the income limits when it comes time to submitting your tax return.

      Unfortunately I think big oil is behind all the hit pieces that has convinced many Republicans that EVs are not as amazing as they are. I have debunked at least 100 arguments repetitively that have been repeatedly echoed by EV haters with the only issue that stands in the end is the current state of battery technology.

    Quebec is an electricity supply power house that exports a lot of power to the USA. Ontario and BC follow.
    Also we have more than our fair share EV factories, built, under construction, under conversion, or pre construction. These include VW, GMC ( BrightDrop delivery vans) and apparently Ford and Honda have plans underway to convert their Ontario factories. And our grid is about 97% non fossil fuel. We have a few Nucs lots of hydropower, wind solar and developing additional pumped hydro and other storage options. And a highly trained work force.

      Honda isn’t converting their Aliston plant, they are building a hole new one. My brother works there and they will need 1000 employees for the EV plant, but also 2000 more in the next five years to replace the current 2000 employees who will be retiring in the next five years.
      The infrastructure is needed though if they want this EV wet dream.

    I'm in BC, and I see more evs every day. Yesterday seemed to be Ioniq 5 day :)
    The cost of petrol here is much higher than the US, so it makes my ev very worth it.

      BC wins per capita. Comparing without considering the population difference is kinda silly. I wish they would just slap new ICE vehicles with a 15% tax to offset the environmental impact over the life of the vehicle; this would incentivize EVs but also every alternative to 1.52 people in a 4,000 lb vehicle.

      However the public charging network is almost non-existent in BC. If you have a Tesla, then there is at least a fair amount of Superchargers, but still way short of what is needed. If you don't have a Tesla, then you MUST charge at home. If you cannot do that, you can't buy a BEV.

      @@royh6526 On the tesla front ive heard lots of good things and often see tons of space at every site. Not really sure about non NACS chargers. Great to see the death of CCS1 and Chademo soon as extra options just caused a mess. Still waiting on my Aptera.

    In Quebec we pay 0.09$ per KW/H. Unless someone live in Kuujjuaq it make no sense paying for gaz

    Hi Sam, I repeat the invitation offered from others to come to the Everything Electric show on September 6, 7, and 8th this year in Vancouver, British Columbia. I went last year and it was wonderful to see such a broad array of electric technologies and UA-cam channel celebrities who were part of the many panel presentations.
    I live in South Surrey, near Vancouver and EVs are incredibly common here. Teslas are well represented along with Hyundais. There is a Tesla Service centre in nearby Langley and it replaced an ICE car dealership, so you can tell EVs are very mainstream.
    I really enjoy your channel and appreciate your voice adding intelligent and knowledgeable commentary against the FUD of corporate media. Thanks for all that you do. 👏

    Few Canadians deny global warming and don’t see EV development as ‘woke’. HydroelectriAs noted, gasoline is taxed. But so far, charging infrastructure is spotty.

      Rural areas in Nova Scotia would be a good example.
      Chargers are slowly popping up though. There can be 100 or more km's between chargers

    In Quebec, We get $5000 from Canada and $7000 from Quebec if MSRP is lower than $65000 for EV($5000 from Quebec for plug-in hybrid)

    People get pretty riled up on rebates but they forget or ignore the fact that petro is subsidized and has been for a long time. Canada for 2023 alone, $8 billion in loan guarantees for the Trans Mountain pipeline, $7.4 billion in public financing through the Crown corporation Export Development Canada, $1.3 billion for carbon capture and storage projects.

    Ontario Canada. I will be getting a Tesla model Y in 2025. Being able to charge at home and use our solar system is a perfect combination. Hey, you electric Viking how the hell do you get so many videos out a day. Been watching you for a couple years now and all I can say is thank you so very much. And yes, you should come see Canada. I know I sure would like to see Australia.

    one possible reason for higher EV adoption is higher gasoline price in Canada than the US although it is relatively cheap in comparison to other parts of the world. Today regular grade gasoline is cad 1.66/ litre around Toronto.

      Right now 1.74$ in Québec. I own EV and I still looking to price of gasoline since now near 3 years. Each time I tell my self, I'm so happy to not pay anymore those price for petrol. 😄 Since when I chooses to make the move at this time, it was in the pandemics and gasoline was just little over 1$ and my cost calculation was telling me even a this price I was winner in the long run. 😁

      I'm in BC. My wife got a model Y 3 weeks ago, and 1 week later I was lucky enough to get a Silverado 4WT. Our provincialy (taxpayer) owned Hydro Co. just offered off peak discounts for nighttime home charging and gas keeps going up. Also, HOV lanes are open for single occupants in EV or plug in hybrids.😀
      Meanwhile, the non-smart Canadians are crying about paying Carbon Tax.

    I count Teslas. On a good day I can count 20 per hour in Victoria, BC. They are very popular here. With the high cost of fuel ($1.90/litre), anyone who can afford an EV do and give the middle finger to big oil every time they pass a gas station!

    Hi from Vancouver BC Canada. We are a huge country in total area, I believe bigger than the US but relatively low population at 40 Million (part of why we love living here) Its a very diverse country in many ways. In terms of Hydro the provinces of Quebec and BC have very cheap electricity but high gas prices. Alberta another province which is next to BC is the countries oil and gas producer so EV acceptance will be very slow there for obvious reasons. In Vancouver, there Tesla's everywhere they are very popular with multiple super charger locations. There are also alot of non Tesla EV's here from Ford Audi Mercedes Benz Hyundai GM Toyota and Nissan to name a few...

    Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦 we own a 2022 Tesla model 3 long range and a 2023 Tesla Model Y Standard range.
    I think Tesla’s got the market here. We would love to see the Tesla charging network expand even more in Canada. I live in Waterloo Ontario, which is an hour west from Toronto Ontario Canada. And our local Tesla service center/showroom is busier than ever. A year ago I’d be lucky to see a handful of Teslas in a whole day. Lately, it’s like I see every corner. Cheers.

    Quebec average electric rate is 7.9 ¢ kwh. All from hydro.
    One liter of gas is $1.75
    So, fuel costs per mile are about 10 x more for gas

      Overnight hydro rates 11pm to 7 am in Ontario is 2 cents a kilowatt so you can charge a car like a model 3 for a few dollars

    I was born in Canada. After moving to several different countries, I ended up in the US. Canada has some brutally cold winters. I just find it interesting/amazing they don't seem deterred from EVs.

      I don't own an EV, but the people that I've spoken to here in Canada understand that they will get some less range in winter and just figure that into how they get around.

    Nostrodamus here. I foresee several factors that will hit internal-combustion engine (ICE) automobiles simultaneously, triggering a black swan event: Tightening of government restrictions on polluting ICEs in urban areas. Collapse of Hydrogen-powered vehicles humiliates the car companies and their champions, undermining their efforts to manage the transition. Electric vehicle (EV) cost-of-ownership continues downward, EV range up. EV charging subsidised by companies, etc.. becomes commonplace. Home solar panels charging EVs further reduce running costs. A lot of chatter about extraordinary low cost-of-ownership. Media highlights the measurable and notable reduction in noise and other pollution, and corresponding quality-of-life improvements as EVs propagate. Public enthusiasm for EVs that was rising, accelerates. More political talk about ending of petrol/gas ICEs as credibility of industry is close to zero. Bottom falls out of the new ICE market. New ICEs heavily discounted and sold at a loss. Bottom falls out of the secondhand market. Used ICEs changing hands for dozens of dollars. Petrol/gas stations going out of business. With the collapse of the ICE market, talk turns to: “How to reclaim and recycle all those obsolete ICEs?” and “What to do with all those old gas stations? … old oil tankers? … old refineries? etc…” Auto companies scrambling to retool for solely-EV production as demand rockets. Company executives change their tune about EVs, and beg for government handouts to manage the transition. Car industry shake-up with many failing to make the adjustment. Major oil/petroleum companies shake-up as demand plummets. Huge promotion and propaganda blitz to rescue the situation for ICEs fails spectacularly. Massive culture wars around EVs, especially in US. Lots of flag waving and posturing by paid-for politicians (think of the anti-Japan sentiment in the 80s). The public, unmoved, embrace EVs wholeheartedly. Politicians and industry team up to pick through the wreckage of their major flag-bearing industrial companies (GM, Ford, Fiat, Renault, Toyota, Honda etc.). Turmoil in Middle East and other oil producing regions (Russia, Nigeria, Venezuela, Angola, Canada etc.) as the cash dries up spectacularly and breaks their economies, uproots their oligarchies, and upends the rampant cronyism. Shock waves crash through a major global religion as central influence wanes. Residual demand for ICEs amongst a few hold-outs in the Middle East, Africa, and India, for example. Victorious Chinese EV manufacturers help accelerate the transition in developing economies. I foresee that these events will accelerate in the next two years and will take about five years to play out. (By now, you’ve realised that I’m no Notradamus - it’s true. Anyone can read the writing on the wall.)

      That's by far the most lucid account I have ever read. Brilliant. I'm definitely pro BEV and EV. At the moment I have seen Teslas by the thousands in major areas like Toronto, Vancouver, Victoria and I presume in Montreal. Not sure about the Maritimes. Those major cities are located in areas with warmer climates. However there are a lot fewer BEV's outside these major centers. The public is slow to convert in those more remote areas because of long travel distances and super harsh winter conditions. I have relatives in rural Quebec who regularly experience days-long power outages due to ice storms etc. And solar panels aren't that practical in winter with the short daytime hours and snow covered panels. The comment about standby generators is unfortunately not far off the mark. So indeed we do look forward to ever improving EV technology and charging infrastructure but there are many ICE holdouts still with their heads up their butts. And in Alberta, the land of oil, the Trump-like slow-moving Neanderthals in the conservative government are doing all they can to stifle BEV sales and any progress towards carbon neutrality. No incentives, talk of excess weight tax, moratorium on solar panel installation. etc. etc. etc. We call that "head in the (oil)sands".

      @@donwhyte9855 Merci beaucoup. The US is the biggest holdout, largely down to the power of the automotive and petroleum lobbies, and the receptiveness of (mostly) the Republican party there. We can (grudgingly) thank Elon Musk and Tesla for moving the needle in that market. It sounds like Canada is similar to the US. Other factors come into play: market tipping points as consumers turn their backs on ICEs; and the industry itself, in the midst of all that turbulence will realise that there is only one clear path left -- to embrace the new technology. Once they do, their politician minions will follow.

      Interesting that gas stations are starting to offer charging - Shell, Chevron BP in the UK. Couche-Tard, the convenience store chain has Journie chargers out here too (tip, don’t ’sleep late’ if you want to fast charge there, as they use battery storage and speed dips later in the day).

    I’m in Ontario- our electric power supply has an almost zero carbon footprint- nuclear, hydro, wind and solar - I produce enough power from my solar array to handle all of my Tesla Model Y power in spring/summer/fall - currently I pay only 2.8 cents/kwhr from 11 pm to 7 am - so I charge from 0 to 100 for around $2.10 CAD

      The rise of wind and solar has made BC dirtier. We had almost northing but hydro but now need natural gas to handle intermittency. Down to 91% renewables makes me sick. PS: Biomass is BS marketing. Not renewable or green.

    New Brunswick we have a $10,000 rebate ($5000 federal ad $5000 provincial). Here in NB our PHEV’s out sell EV’s by a lot. We just purchased an Equinox EV. America their gas is very cheap compared to everywhere else and there isn’t as much incentive to go electric

    We got CA$9,000 off our Tesla Model 3 RWD (after paying tax on the total). However the price of our MODEL 3 is NET almost $6,000 less now than when we bought it. The base price of $49,900 still qualifies for the $5K Federal and the $4K BC incentives after BC lowered the Max car price to $50,000.

      Yes and no. When I travel, I noticed Ontario is very similar to Quebec in this subject and even in US many still like small efficient car. Then no I will not say only in Québec they like small car. Québec follow the mode like now It's VUS for now many years and big TRUCK now too. In Québec I see more and more frequently F150 lightning, which it's a big truck.

    One important thing to remember about the market differences between the USA and Canada is that there are 30 times the millionaires in the USA vs Canada. Not just the 10 times population difference, but 30 times more millionaires in the USA. So, the top end expensive car sales are always going to be less in Canada but the lower and mid-market vehicles should do well in Canada.

    In Québec, our electricity is more than 96% generated by hydro electricity which costs us only 0,08 $ / kwatt (so approx. 600$/year charge cost) generated ecologically. We own a Bolt and have saved 5000$ over the last 2 years of use and got 12000$ total rebate. Can't beat that.

    Took advantage of the federal rebate to get my Ioniq 6 in May. My province (Sask) don't provide extra support. I have solar panels and a home charger so love the cost savings. EVs are fun to drive.

    I live in Victoria BC. Electric cars make up over 25% of all car sales here - not surprising, as most of us only drive about 10000 km a year or less on Vancouver Island. And we have abundant hydropower (hopefully to soon be augmented with wind and solar), so we have an easy path to reducing our carbon footprint. To be honest electric subsidies should be aimed more at the buses and commercial trucks than passenger vehicles, but the transition is well on its way...

    The rest of Canada is pretty bad compared to Quebec and BC. I live in Sudbury, Ontario and we’re far behind other areas for charging infrastructure. Quebec also has high gas prices and low electricity prices.

    Just an FYI...Québec is pronounced "Kay-Beck" by most people who live there. Also, they dub it "La Belle Province" which means literally "the beautiful province..." and it is quite lovely. If you go, then go around February or March. Yes...the cold will be a shock for an Aussie, but it's peak maple syrup harvest season and there's an amazing tourism industry revolving around it.

    Few Canadians deny global warming and don’t view EV development as ‘woke’. Gasoline is taxed heftily but hydroelectricity is cheap. There is less of a culture of individual supremacy and more sympathy for community causes.

    A tesla Model 3 is around 50K CDN. Remove 10K before taxes and that M3 RWD is $40K CDN. if you do 10,00km/year, you can makeup the difference with an ICE car. So if you have a home, it is a fairly straight forward idea. If in an apartment, will take longer to break even.

    EV sales in the UK are stagnant and the biggest struggler is BYD. Now with more than 50 sites they registered just under 700 cars in June. That is about 3 per dealership per week across 3 models. SIAC is doing well with the MG4 and vast discounts (30-40%) are moving some Stellantis EV models.

    Since 2020, Canada has committed 53b dollars of subsidies which amounts to 12k dollars per capita. It is hard to know if this huge amount produce the results or merely another corporate welfare for the auto industry.

    Canada is a huge country with complicated geography. BC has cheap hydro and high gas prices. EV penetration is highest in urban areas like Vancouver and less so in the remote interior. EV penetration in the provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba is low partly because their economies are fossil fuel driven. Electricity costs are high with limited use of wind and solar. Manitoba has a new government that is supporting EVs more. Ontario has high electricity costs and is not moving fast into renewable energy. Charging infrastructure is OK near larger cities but lacking in the remote northwest. Quebec has low electricity costs because of abundant hydro. It is also moving quickly to develop wind power. Gas prices are relatively high. Quebec ses itself as a renewable energy hub so is very supportive of EVs. On the east coast New Brunswick is average while Nova Scotia, PEI and Newfoundland are lagging behind. We have an election in 2025 and could wind up with a right wing government that might not be EV friendly.

    All of these growth reports need to remove hybrid and PHEV sales as they do not qualify for the full EV tax bribes. Once they are removed you will see that EV sales are less than hybrids which are the big volume sellers

      Whether hybrid or BEV the switchover is underway. As infrastructure improves and the comfort level changes more buyers will be switching to BEV's. For most people an ICE vehicle just won't make any sense by 2040. Hybrids are just a transition product.

      @@kevinW826 There is a big investment in the power grid infrastructure of rural areas already underway.
      Solar panels are cheaper and better than they have ever been even under cloudy skies. Installation of these will reduce loading problems in the grid. Battery backup capacity is increasing rapidly as it is becoming cheaper than running peak demand plants.
      Most people will not be using charging stations as home charging at night will be the best for them using a slow charge.
      Rivian vehicles and the Cybertruck have the capacity to be used as grid load batteries if needed which will help during brown out conditions.
      We might not be there today but there was a time not all of the US Interstate System was there to support cross-country trucking.

    Here in Alberta the provincial government hate evs yet I see more and more evs on the road. They are way cheaper to run than a gas vehicle. Alberta only has $5000 federal rebate, but that's still a large amount.
    We just bought a model 3 highland sr, and love it.

    Interesting wrinkle on EV discounts in British Columbia - buy a used one with 6000km on the odometer, and you don’t pay the 7% Provincial sales tax. This includes top end vehicles for now, where luxury tax kicks in. They also tightened the rebate qualifications on new EVs, but I think the used car discount is a big shot in the arm. All we need now is a battery passport with a bill of health to reassure new EV buyers.

    If we (the USA) would open up our rebates to all EV manufactures sold here AND also include leasing incentives (like Canada does) maybe the US would also see a ballistic increase in new EVs. Only cars made in the US are eligible and only if you purchase the vehicle. Thankfully, Hyundai (and most other EV auto manufacturers) are making up for our lackluster government and giving the incentives themselves to anyone who wants to buy or lease one of their EVs. My wife and I both have Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 EVs and we'll never go back to ICE again.
    On second thought, the governmental decisions are causing many international auto manufacturers to build factories in the US bringing more jobs to the USA as well.

    This is great news that Canada is rapidly adopting EV's. It would be nice if they could also ditch their dirty Tar Sands oil. The dirty oil is not worth the extraction and refining cost. Canada already gets a huge amount of electricity from hydro and can get the rest from wind and solar with battery storage. No need for using dirty oil and gas.

    It’s because many of our provinces were immediately removing the tax credits. We had less than 24 hours to place orders to still reserve tax credits. Wouldn’t be surprised if statistic was primarily to the SUV /station wagon variety as they took the elegibility down over 20k

      Yes,, but be careful how you read those stats. They don't mean fewer EVs were sold than in previous months. In fact the same report showed that in Quebec EV sales are still climbing, and Montreal registered 28.1% of all new car sales were EVs, and increase from previous quarters that makes it the clear leader of cities in Canada. I just travelled in Montreal a couple of weeks ago and Teslas are everywhere. I counted at least three or four per hundred vehicles there: 3 or 4 per city block. That is considerably higher than in my home town of Kingston, Ontario. (Actually I think you and Sam may have been reading from the same report, though quoting different parts of it.)

    In Alberta we are subsidizing the cost of gas at the pump while banning solar, wind, and charging stations. We are going all in on hydrogen and investing heavily in new coal mines. However you will be able to pick Albertans out of the crowd because of missing teeth thanks to our banning of federal dental care.

      I am in Vancouver and have not heard if the push to Hydrogen. This will be a complete failure as it has been everywhere else for passenger cars. Its old technology that has never worked. Alberta's significant contribution to solar energy growth is due in part to large projects like the Claresholm Solar PV farm and the Travers Solar farm, which have substantial generating capacities. Alberta's focus on renewable energy and energy storage saw it account for over 92% of Canada's overall growth in renewable energy capacity for the year​ (Renewables Association)​​ (House Grail)​.

There is 1 CCS charger here (outrageously expensive), 11 pairs (single post, two outlets) of J-1772 chargers of which only 6 work and hundreds of electric cars. Nearest Tesla Superchargers are in Victoria and Nanaimo. I visited North Van a couple of year ago, and spent most of my time hunting for vacant J-1772 chargers.

    My wife's EV has cut her "fuel" costs to 20%-25% of her ICE. She drives to and from work, and to the store and back. Pretty regular distances per month. Our solar panels are about equal to the amount of electricity used by the EV. Time to add more panels!

      Subsidies must go.

    And yes, Canada is amazing. It’s as varied as the U.S. geographically and every time I visit I’m struck by how similar it is to the States.
