On the first day this movie came out, people all over the country were outside theaters protesting the use of the R word. There are actual pictures of the protests, it was ridiculous.
Me being a white person. I say same thing when it comes to movies like white chicks. Which i love that movie. And even though I'm not a woman. And they were doing it in movie for different reasons like being under cover. I still think it's funny with Marlon Wayans and Shawn Wayans doing a stereotype blonde white woman impression. 😄 And nobody should be offended by that. Because It's a comedy movie. And it's coming from a good place as in it's supposed to be a joke. And I look at tropic thunder and what Robert Downey jr is doing in it no different.

When you do a rewatch of this, you should watch it with the actor commentary turned on. RDJ mentioned in the movie that he doesn’t break character until the dvd commentary, and he stays in character for it in the actual commentary
2008 was a wild time. RDJ even got nominated for an Oscar for this movie (but was destined to lose to Heath Ledger as The Joker). I remember watching this and Iron Man (and The Dark Knight) in theaters. This is actually my favorite of the three! I wish they still made comedies like this!
This came out the same year as Iron Man? RDJ was eating GOOD that year!

The writing is pure genius. Top 5 comedy. This is one u have to watch several times and it get funnier each time. Takes a couple times to wrap your head around it. The 1st time you’re like “wtf is going on”

Robert Downey did blackface in this to essential make fun of actors who take roles way too seriously. When he says “I don’t drop character until after the DVD commentary” he actually did the DVD commentary for this movie STILL in character😂

One of the layers to the nuance of RDJ’s character is that “while in character” the black man is the only one with enough sense of what’s going on. The actor is stupid but the character is not.

And the answer is simple cast Robert Downey Jr as an extreme method actor and cast Tom Cruise as a psychotic Studio executive. You WILL be hooked from the first minute to binge watch all of 1883 to find out what happens with Elsa! It starts with one season of 1883 then it goes to the same family in the show 1923, then it has 5 seasons in present day called Yellowstone... I CANNOT believe that MTV did this show! Tom Hanks, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Sam Elliot, Harrison Ford, Kevin Costner... I can't believe the lineup of talent! This is the BEST Western saga ever!

as far as the black face in movies and shows conversation i'm mixed about it. i know the history of it from like the 20's, 30's and 40's stuff, and don't like it, but at the same time if it's ray sist to do that in movies within the last few decades then i can't really blame the actors, i gotta blame the script writers and producers who came up with the idea. i can't speak for all of them but i think most of the actors were probably just trying to book any role they could get out of desperation not because they were predjudice.
HOW the F have you not watched Forrest Gump? Look, it isnt my "kind of movie" but it really is one of the best movies ever made. It will take you through every emotion and glue you to the tv. You wont be distracted looking at your phone or playing a game on the side. You will be absorbed into the movie. The character of R.D.J. It's a criticism of how the industry was a few years ago. He criticizes actors who give their lives for the role, but who don't understand when there should be a limit. Kirk Lazarus sees no limits and does things in black face just to feed his own ego.
