Very enjoyable interview. I could say that I followed a different path than Anthonys and although a few years younger than him, I was a Lenadoon protestant, my best friend was a catholic and as children we never apart and despite following a different path, I have no animosity towards any. other person, regardless of religion or political opinion and I have to this day lifelong catholic best friends. I was a witness to the Battle of Lenadoon and never at that time recognised how significant it was. Very happy memories from my days in Suffolk and Lenadoon.
As a Belfastman now living in Texas, I am thoroughly enjoying these interviews. Somewhat shamefully, I left NI some years ago, but still go back to visit family and friends. Educating myself on the background and reality of The Troubles means a lot to me - thanks for the part you are playing in this. Keep up the good work!! Go ra mile maith agat.!!
I met mackers when he was first released on licence back in the early 90's. I never had any reservations of speaking to him or listening to him. He educated himself inside. On a personal level, with politics aside, he's a gentleman. Thanks for this Trisha, see if you can get Tommy McKernan next, that man can tell you a good story.
Such a podcast. Being from belfast growing up in the 90s and 2000s watching and hearing stuff like this reiterates the fact is the past is the past and never let it happen again!
Your interviewing style is excellent. The focus is on the interviewee at all times and the result is a seamless story of intrigue. Well done. Bien hecho.
Excellent interview Patricia, mackers was probably among the first to put his head over the parapet in highlighting that SF was abandoning the republican project and was hounded for it. keep up the good work 👍
Great interview again I watched adairs last week and I can't believe how viciously both sides treated each other I hope for my daughters sake people watch these and make sure the troubles never ever break out again
Thanks Patricia also for excellent interviewing Anthony this is the kind of Man from "The Troubles' that should be part of educationing our children in school's about, and the educational studies are must and have to be introduced instead of religion . With for example of his 'Lived Past and Present ' lives and his complete honesty in his sharing and others im sure may be out there also then the children would be told the truth and led to make up thier own minds through all of this instead of teaching NOTHING? thank you
You are an amazing interviewer. It's rare that I can listen riveted to an entire unedited oral history interview. Refreshing to hear his experiences with Protestant neighbours before the troubles. My family were mixed marriage with my Irish Catholic granny running a shop for a few years in the 50s in the Glenmachon street area that Anthony mentions and she never had trouble apparently. And she sent her kids to Anglican Sunday school on the Falls Road of all places. So glad they emigrated to Canada in the early 60s though. Who knows how things would have turned out. Minor production suggestions: maybe stop down the aperture a bit more on your cameras when filming at an oblique angle. We get some weird out of focus effects with interviewee hands, sides of faces, or mic cables in some of these interviews. And perhaps a shock mount for your microphones will cut down on the boominess when your interviewees tap the table. Keep up the great work.
Very good interview. You have an excellent style that allows the interviewee to tell their story how they remember it and flows nicely to the next stage
I don’t agree with Anthony that the current political strategy won’t lead to a united Ireland, but I’ve always respected him. He has always come across as a person of integrity.
Great honest cast Trisha, could I add as an improvement is to section the podcast with the topics discussed? it's nice to sit down & listen to the full content, but at times it's near impossible with the kids & life:)
Hi Liam, thank you for listening and that is a great idea. What I will do is divide a few sections up and post them as separate clips throughout the week after the full interview ☺️
What a magnificent interview with incredible honesty, courage and insights into the most dynamic period in the 800 yr occupation of our country. I stayed on the Donegal Rd up from the Park Centre where the Ra wacked the RUC peeler that Macker mentioned. The Brits and their quisling hired help terrorised our community, so there wasn't a tear shed when he was brought to the final court of justice. Macker mentioned a young girl and her story. I heard a older woman ask a young girl, 7 or 8 yrs old in the Murph "What do you want to do when you grow up"? The lass replied "I want to join the IRA and fight the Brits until they leave". That's how we and our kids were brutalised by the occupation and subsequent wars. I've never had to go to war but if I did Tony is the kind of revolutionary leader I'd gladly take orders from. Proud to know this incredible man in these fascinating times.
I would rather join the Ulster volunteer force who I despise just to kill the IRA bastards just a reply from an ex service man from the Shankill where the murdering bastards took many an innocent life FTP GSTQ hopefully the bastard burns in he'll like the innocent people who burnt in the Shankill bomb u filthy rebel bastard
For you Patricia to like the comment so disappointing where's your impartiality you rebel bitch Ulster was British before you were born and will continue to be British long after your touching base with martin mcguinnes and the rest of the murdering cunts in hell
Really enjoyed this interview, I pray protestant and catholic people come together and realise we have been played and duped by all the main parties now,,,we as citizens of the island of Ireland are truly under attack now from the globalist elite and they don't care for orange or green,, were all canon fodder,, agenda 21,and project Ireland plan 2040 is designed to destroy our country and people and culture,,,
Absolutely BRILLIANT channel this is just what both north and south Ireland wanted and needed. Try get Sam Millar on he's got a great story. Keep it fair getting both sides on 🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪
Not sure I could give a guy connected 2 the horrific McGirks Bombing a simple ride home...how cold any respectable Irish person hv anything to do w/ those murderers!
The Good Friday Agreement was a rejection of the IRA armed struggle and all of the deaths involved were for nothing. It is a sad commentary but it is undeniable. The British gave no substantial concessions to the Northern Irish catholics. The killings largely ceased after the agreement, that was all.
He seems to be a very nice old gentleman, (very surprised he has been an IRA terrorist?) we do not know what his life was like during the troubles in his formative years, fascinating interview.
Confused why he thought the good Friday was a sell out. We as nationalists are in a much better place now post agreement. Is it perfect- no, but you don't get all your goals right away. It's a process.
Are the Troubles going to be your predominant topic, Patricia? Not that I don't think they shouldn't be, especially because everyone in Northern Ireland was affected by them in some way or another. The reason I'm asking, is because you've got so much potential as a podcaster to a wider audience through different topics and issues. Good luck whatever you do in the future. You're doing a great job. 👍
The troubles is a propaganda spin word, it couples the whole civil struggle of the northern state into a British story of 1969 communities uprising/state unable to handle it - 1994/98 when the warring tribes seen sense
I feel there will be a United Ireland in 2024 I've thought this from I seen it mentioned on Star Trek years ago then mentioned about the unification of Ireland in 2024. I only think this because the people who run the show I mean the ones who created the war in Ireland who ran both sides use stuff subliminally through TV like films different TV programmes, documentaries, cartoon series etc. The people who are fully awake will know what I'm talking about. God Bless 🙏
