Having been born in Belfast In The 1970s Into a Protestant family - but being raised and now living in South Africa 🇿🇦 this podcast has given me a real perspective on what the Catholic people of Northern Ireland really had to endure over that dark period. So here’s a thing, having just returned from my first tour of Belfast and all the tourist spots of the political divide ( on both sides ) and without disclosing my back ground or beliefs as it would offer no purpose to my comment…..I can say, without a shadow of a doubt, this interview and testimony by Sam Millar is the single most informative and in my opinion, honest, piece I have ever heard concerning the troubles by someone involved. It’s fearless, brave, heartbreaking and mind blowing all rolled into one. Quite stunning. Sam, I fully tip my hat to you for your bravery and courage in the face of such dire consequences and I salute you as an inspiration.Your honesty has removed many of the so called truths I have carried on this subject which have been constantly peddled by media and other outlets that have been pushed over the years. May you and your testimony continue to reach people and educate new generations in the hope that more of us will choose the pen over the sword.God bless you.

I just paused the video and reflected on my short time, my "snapshot" in an American jail & then acknowledged he did 8 years in the various circles of hell & you can tell from how clear and concise and genuine he is that the British tried they're hardest to break this lad and he remains intact, my dad was a staunch republican, born in Ireland but spent his adult life in the USA and he would tell me about people like Bobby Sands and watching this man's recollection of events it honestly gave me chills, if you can't respect this man's strength, determination and courage (even if you firmly disagree with his stance) then there is something missing in your human foundation and you should do some soul searching, this man is the personification of human determination and the will to go on, I hope I can have 1/1000th his strength and fortitude in my life and the struggles and trials and tribulations that I will inevitably face

The misunderstanding is illustrated by the widespread use of the word Fenian as an insult (or compliment, depending on your perspective). It's broadly used as a pejorative meaning Catholic, when in fact the Fenians were both Catholic and Protestant, whose common aim was Irish nationalism. This was lost via propaganda and segregation.

Wow!!!! This is a truly incredible story..... most Senior IRA members were intelligent and 3rd level educated men (women too). They fought for a war which many regret and others proudly admit their actions. Education was and still is the most vital part of bringing both communities together in Northern Ireland. It's never going to fully heal BUT it can't return to bloodshed again.

Education is the way out , one thing to note Catholic college educated children educated in both the North and South usually stay close to home ,however unionist college educated children now tend to go to Britain for college and end up staying put as they see themselves as British and are very much at home in Britain, so catholics are not only outnumbering protestants on the census but are now better educated and better off financially than protestants

A few years back I heard of Sam's book and contacted Sam for a copy before it became a Worldwide seller.Sam wouldn't take any payment whatsoever, all that Sam asked was that I would read the book and contact him again with my thoughts on the book and the way in which it was written. Personally couldn't put it down and he certainly has a skill in writing and storytelling that the reader has to continually remind themselves that these are actual events. Just shows the measure of the man and I will treasure the book for life.
