Outstanding review and comparison. I just bought a Neotec 2 and am looking forward to testing it out. I've always struggled with wind noise as I do ride videos, as well as the noise level in general on my ears, and I am hoping this will reduce both issues dramatically. I feel this is the best modular on the market.

What a great comparison video. Thank you. No bs'ing and to the point! You could have easily dragged it out with salesman style crap but you kept on track 👍🏻 I personally am a convert to the ratcheting system over a DD-ring ever since getting a Shark Vision-R many moons ago, it's just miles quicker and the hero's that bang on about the DD being safer and "proper" biking are usually the guys that brake hard in corners and suffer from target fixation!

Very Informative you make it sound like a Great Helmet.. Helps me to understand maybe why my Shoei Air is so noisy ..
My biggest complaint on Shoei Air is that the sun Visor does not come down low enough .. I get a bright direct light reflection coming off from my Instrument panel directly into my eyes..

Very cool and informative video. I've had a few helmets, and made a few mistakes in getting them and since have learned a lot, seemed like there were so many on the market, even considering paring down the various categories.
Really wish I would have had videos like this to glean or garner information from. One of my best upgraded came from an Italian company called Caberg, and one of the first to have the drop down sun visor, but one of the first things I learned was that it had the wind noise that was talked about here. I don't know much about comm systems or Sena even though I want to learn, I would definitely be interested in this helmet for this review. Thanks.

Hi Chuck, glad you enjoyed our video. Yeah choosing a helmet can be overwhelming with all the different manufacturers and options that are available. Haven't had any experience with Caberg, but as long as you found something that you like and suits your needs, that's all that matters. Take a look at this video on the Sena Comms systems, it will help give you an overview on what the units can do: ua-cam.com/video/a_2NsBCAx1M/v-deo.html

@Chapparal The outer shell of the new Neotec 2 seems larger than the original. Is that true? I have the original (size M) and it already looks big. Not as compact as the RF-1200.

    • @chaparralmotorsports
      @chaparralmotorsports  6 років тому

Hello Jesus MLG, the shell sizes are the same. The II looks larger in this video as it is sitting closer to the camera than the original Neotec. It may be slightly larger than your RF-1200 due to the fact that the mechanisms for the modular take up space. Once they arrive, I can give you a comparative measurement. I have the Neotec II Helmet. It is possibly the best helmet I have ever owned,I have owned quite a few in 50+ years or riding. The aerodynamics of this helmet are so well done that even in strong winds,my head is no longer bounced all over the place. However, there is a price to pay for the almost perfect aerodynamics of this helmet and that is,The top vent does indeed channel more air into the helmet, unfortunately,it also sucks in all sorts of flying insects including in my case, two wasps, which proceeded to do what wasps do.Between them,I got stung six times.Yes I know it' sounds funny and if it were someone else's bald head,I'd be laughing too.The point is,there is,in my opinion,a safety issue here that needs addressing with some urgency.Being stung in the head by wasps, does little to maintain the riders concentration, which could result in a serious accident.Come on Mr Shoei, surely you could have designed some kind of filter for this vent to prevent this ever happening.

Couple of questions... 1. If I purchase a Neotec 2 interior, pads and liner, do they snap in my one year old Neotec? and 2. Does it sit any higher on the head? I have a terrible time with my sunglasses being pushed down on my nose because the top of the glasses hit the bottom of the front liner?

    • @chaparralmotorsports

Hello Wayne, thank you for your inquiry. The liners are not interchangeable as the Neotec II liner is completely redesigned and attaches differently. Nice overview of the differences, however, please don't thank Shoei for the quick-release; that was available with the first Neotec, everywhere EXCEPT IN THE U.S! It was one of the 3 reasons I decided to return my original Neotec; the other ones being that the helmet wasn't any quieter than the helmet I had and the cheek pads (I needed the narrower ones) were very expensive; not good for a helmet that was already pretty expensive. If this new version is quieter (and because of the quick-release) I will consider getting it.

    • @chaparralmotorsports

Hello Adam, thanks for watching. I used to have the same feelings as you... I was a stickler for D-rings until my first stent in a Schuberth Helmet, that is where I fell in-love with the quick release. Now... the quick release mechanisms out there are very different... and Shoei has done it right. This one feels great! Similarly, I used to think that the center tab on the visor would be the ticket... until I purchased an RPHA helmet with that feature. After using a center latch visor... I decided that blocking my vision to open my visor was not a something that I enjoyed. I am back to preferring a left side visor hold. It is crazy how small changes make huge differences and how some tweaks work well for some and not for others. Thank you for your comments! Chaparral Motorsports currently have a GT-Air which I find very good and I certainly couldn’t live without an internal sun visor anymore! However I find the air in the word GT-air lacking quite a bit and I have had the chance to test the neotec quite a bit and find it brilliant especially just the fact of flipping the visor up at a red light or paying at a petrol station so the person can see your face really good. With all the improvements you list on the Neotec II I think it will be my next helmet very soon :)

Aerodynamics do make the helmet lighter while riding by creating lift.

wtf where did you found a neotec with that old closing system xD? i know 3 guys with the original neotec and they all have the same chin closing system which is the same as neotec 2... maybe the neotec you have there is fake

I test it for a ride tbh... every 200€/$ Helmet is same good as this one.
Neotec 2 is REALY loud already at 100km/h.
i would try a BMW system 6 or 7... worlds way better

I have the Neotec II--it's a great helmet, no doubt about it, BUT all this talk about the vents is HIGHLY EXAGGERATED. Frankly, I feel NO EFFECT with either vent open or closed--nothing at all no matter the speed I ride. Next point: much is made about how quiet the helmet is supposed to be. IT AIN'T--period. It's noisy as hell to be honest, and I have a relatively quiet R1250. I don't have another helmet to compare it to now, but years back I had a Simpson (Darth Vader) that I recall being much quieter. My helmet has the Sena audio system installed and unless the volume is maxed out at the source, you don't hear much of music--often the bass is missing. Can't say if that's the a problem with the Senna system, or the fact that the Senna can't overcome the helmet noise. Sound from the GPS is fine. Last point: the padding in the crown of the helmet is slotted (for venting?) and REALLY does a number on my hair unless I wear a knit cap between the helmet and my head. Everything else about the helmet is TOP NOTCH, especially the chin guard, the sun visor and the face shield. Did I mention the damn thing costs EIGHT HUNDRED CLAMS?! Yup, it sure do...

Wow very interesting. The Neotec II typically ranks pretty high amongst reviews. Thanks for the insight and relating your experience with the Neotec II.

I've owned and own both a Multitec and a Neotec 2 helmet and a Shoei NXR. The Shoei Neotec 2 is quite frankly... fatiguing! I've owned it for 2 years and use the Sena integrated comms unit with it. I find the lid very quickly becomes 'heavy'. How this was/is ever supposed to be a touring lid is beyond me (by the very nature of 'touring' you'd expect it to be comfortable for long jaunts. Don't get me wrong now, the lid is very comfortable on the head, the lining in plush and (for me) there are no pressure points at all, and I've never seen any online complaints of pressure points to. I like to use it for short rides 1-3 hours, but I would not take this lid "touring"! And next the noise levels are not good, I found it to be nosier than the original Multitec by some margin. At motorway speeds you most definitely need earplugs and for touring you would go mad if you didn't wear them. I also had to remove the pinlock (that was supplied in the box) as it gives a very slight smear to the visor. I tried various cleaning methods but it just will not shake off that look that things are very slightly blurred and it is only very slightly but there nonetheless. Finally, the Sena comms system is horrible to use. It's harder to locate the buttons, especially with gloves on, but this has been noted many times in many reviews. A retailers review is somewhat different to an owners review (it shouldn't be, but it is). I found the Sena SMH5 & 10 with the jog dial a much superior solution and strangely generated far less wind noise!! Go figure?! Perhaps the Sena R/C bar unit would / could eliminate this issue (for an extra $100). I think the overall weight of Shoei helmets has started to increase to a level that is unreasonable for today's riders and other manufacturers are taking a lead on them. They have become too complacent with the 'Big Name Branding' and possibly feel they can take a few liberties with weight and noise levels because of the old reputation but I think they will eventually lose loyal customers unless they rethink their game plan. The JO is also a very noisy helmet which is a shame too as the concept is actually quite a good idea. Good luck shopping for a new touring lid but my recommendation is look elsewhere.

Hello Duane, thank you for your comment. Yes, there are many light weight technical materials and sometimes they are used together. Here is a very interesting description of the two: special-carbonfiber.com/index.php?route=information/information&information_id=10 - Kyle & the Chap Moto Team
