Well-deserved! I think her performance in Moonstruck WAS Oscar-worthy because it was EFFORTLESS. She WAS Loretta Castorini, she wasn't just playing herself. She WAS this woman. That's the brilliance of it, in how brilliantly understated the character was, & Cher really tapped into who this woman actually was, as if she were a REAL person. BRILLIANT! She was wonderful in Mask also, but she was playing someone from life in that, which somehow lessened her brilliance. In Moomstruck she didn't hold back and created something memorable.. Moonstruck is actually cinematic art. I think Moonstruck is one of the best romantic dramedies of Modern Cinema, but I am a Jew from NYC so I might be a tad biased. Cher, however is one of the BEST actresses and artists of ALL TIME in my humble opinion. She can do ANYTHING!
Moonstruck WAS so Oscar worthy, the part where Nicolas Cage takes her to the Opera. The Cinematography, everyone in the movie deserved an Oscar. It was such an original, to me it was the first Independent Film.
Notice Meryl Streep when Cher wins. She jumps up without hesitation in true celebration of her comrade winning. It's genuine and real. The others put on a nice smile. But this shows really Streep's character in a very beautiful light.
That was one year I wouldn't have a bit of envy for the voting academy. All five of them deserved an Oscar that year. Every single one of them outdid themselves in their roles that year.
Academy award winning actresses such as Cher, (Mask, Silkwood, Moonstruck, Witches of Eastwicke, Mermaids and Suspect; Bette Midler, (Beaches, Stella, The Rose and For The Boys; Barbara Streisand (Yentl, Prince of Tides, Funny Girl and Funny Lady), and others I can not recall at this time deserve two-thumbs up, due to the fact that their primary talent field was music and comedy. All these women earned awards, beating out primarily acting focused actresses. This goes to show it helps to be multi-faceted in the entertainment industry to be taken seriously by the public at large and I highly regard these women for their talents!
That was great. Not only Cher, but Olympia Dukakis winning. And even more so, the fact they won for amazing comedic roles which is so few and far between in Hollywood.
My God, I remember seeing the show live way back then but didn't remember what amazing, talented women Cher was up against! It only says soo much more about her performance and how deserving she was to have won the Oscar!
I remember this night so well....I was so happy for Cher, LOVED her speech....she was so humble & down to earth....I always felt that she should have won for Mask.
Since there are a few intelligent commentators mixed in here with the kindergarten-snarky ones, I'll address the former: sure, there were heavy performers that year, with Ms Close's now-legendary obsession and rabbit-boiling especially well acted. But Cher's win was special because it capped many years of not being taken seriously as an actress. Roles like those in '5 and Dime' and 'Silkwood' finally started to come in, and she showed them that she had the stuff. Her Loretta Castorini was the ducking turning into a swan... both in the film and in real life. She deserved Oscar that year.
I never thought of Cher as a great actress, but I remember being bowled over by her performance (and everyone else's) when Moonstruck first came out. I think she won fairly. I love Glenn too, but that performance was over the top (she should've finally won for Albert Nobbs).
Honestly, I felt any of these 5 exceptionally beautiful and talented actresses deserved to win.. but like many have commented on... Cher's performance in Moonstruck was spellbinding.. Just an observation but wow Meryl Streep was absolutely gorgeous!
NOW THAT WAS A FANTASTIC OSCAR SPEECH! Nothing pretentious, nothing obnoxious, nothing overly emotional as if she was going to shit in her pants. Just an AMAZINGLY gifted performer remainign calm and collected, remembering where she came from and extending gratitude where it was deserved! In my opinion, I think she's a talented music performer but an extraordinarily GIFTED actress!
I can't believe how the Academy gave Cher the Oscar instead of gave it to Glenn Close, she could have given Cher an acting masterclass... a total shame ....
I love Cher, dare I say she goes beyond even our Madonna? I guess it's who you ask or how we feel from day to day. Anyway seeing her win Best Actress for Moonstruck was just awesome. She is a legend, an icon, a inspiration. Cher is almost damn perfect!!!!
Cher was great in 'Moonstruck' however, Glenn Close portrayed a character that you wanted to kill, and yet you really felt sorry for her in 'Fatal Attraction' Glenn deserved to win..
+Chris Coyne If anything i think she should have gotten the award but i also feel cher should have gotten nominated and won an Oscar for her part in Mask.
Chris Coyne Yes. I agree with you. Glenn Close portrayed a character that defined what we called a brilliant, engaging and powerful performance. No offense to Cher, I respect her as well. But if I were the jury, my vote will go for Glenn Close. We can't see that kind of character anymore today.
She did a phenomenal job in Moonstruck and in my opinion, Cher was hands down the best actress. It's still funny to think about Cher winning an Oscar though
I haven't read any if the comments but I bet there are going to be lots of "oh Meryl reaction proves how great she is as a person" or "Meryl didn't won but she was happy for Cher, what a wonderful person" well let me tell you something, stars react like that because of one reason, there are cameras recording them soy they have to look like if they were happy for each other.
This was back in the day when all actresses had talent. It was a difficult choice, but I cast my vote for Cher. Glenn Close would have won in a normal year, but Cher is not normal and she deserved the Oscar ever since Silkwood and Mask!!!
Yes, for this particular year, Glenn deserved it. I mean, think about it. Today, people certainly don't talk about Cher's performance in "Moonstruck" as much as they do about Glenn's in "Fatal Attraction." Cher, however, did deserve her own Oscar, but in my opinion, it should have been for her best career performance in "Mask," a true story, in which she played "Rusty," mother of son "Rocky" (Eric Stoltz), a disfigured boy, and shows actors who've had much more experience than she how dramatic acting is done.
Rhaegar Targaryen Cher did get nominated by the Golden Globes for Best Actress for "Mask" (1985), then inexplicably got snubbed by the Oscars (what a travesty), BUT her performance in "Mask" DID win her the same award from the Cannes Film Festival, which I think should be considered even more prestigious than her Oscar win for "Moonstruck," since Cannes is international, not just national.
I think that is why she hit for Moonstruck....I remember the outrage all over the country at the fact that she did not win for such a powerful role in Mask, that they gave it to her to kind of appease the upset. I also think Mask is her crowning film. In that movie I saw perfection in her acting that I cannot say I have seen since. That is just my personal opinion on the matter. But there was such a horrendous amount of outrage over her not winning for Mask.
bahamutskingdom Give me a break ! There was such outrage..LOL.... PLEASE ! Drama queen ! Some people, and outrage that she didn't win... when she wasn't even nominated...LOL . I don't remember there being any outrage.. I do remember some critics mentioning her and that she was nominated.
I would have been happy had Glenn Close won, but I felt happy for Cher and also with the enthusiastic audience support of her because the critics were so cruel to Cher when she first started doing movies. They passed her off as a joke. But Cher is a good actress and it was her time to win.
I did. And I have to agree with her. This one was NOT for Cher, but I wouldn't say it was for Sally either. My vote would go to Glenn Close. If you've seen "Fatal Attraction", I'm sure you'll understand :) .
Oh, that was back when she had that beautiful, distinctive mouth! I don't know why she ever had plastic surgery on her lips - her face was always so attractive to me.
it should have gone:1 Holly Hunter (Broadcast News (1987)2 Glenn Close (Fatal Attraction (1987)3 Sally Kirkland (Anna (1987)4 Cher (Moonstruck (1987)5 Meryl Streep (Ironweed (1987)
I love how Meryl Streep is the first person to give Cher a standing O. Awesome.
Even now at 70 Cher is still gorgeous.
BRILLIANT! I love how Meryl Streep is the first person to give Cher a standing !!!
Meryl and Cher were in Siljwood, right?
Meryl is so classy.
Notice Meryl Streep when Cher wins. She jumps up without hesitation in true celebration of her comrade winning. It's genuine and real. The others put on a nice smile. But this shows really Streep's character in a very beautiful light.
Cher was so talented in this film.. really a great actress full Italian temperament.
+Marissa Tamayo she is armenian :)
her Oscar was coming in Silkwood
I love that Meryl Streep was the first to cheer and get up on her feet. She is so cool. And Cher was amazing in Moonstruck.
That was one year I wouldn't have a bit of envy for the voting academy. All five of them deserved an Oscar that year. Every single one of them outdid themselves in their roles that year.

A perfect year for a tie: Cher and Glenn Close. LOVE *both* performances. Cher is impeccable in this role (Loretta), still very a pleasure to watch.
This clip is a joy! Cher, one of my favourite movies eveeeer and Paul Newman, the most handsome man of all time.
Really love Meryl Streep always so supportive of other actors :)
This and Mermaids are 2 of my all time favotive movies. LOVE Cher
That was great. Not only Cher, but Olympia Dukakis winning. And even more so, the fact they won for amazing comedic roles which is so few and far between in Hollywood.
Cher was just spellbinding in this beautiful film!!!
I cried when she talked about Meryl. Cher has been such a great human.
My God, I remember seeing the show live way back then but didn't remember what amazing, talented women Cher was up against! It only says soo much more about her performance and how deserving she was to have won the Oscar!
She Won because she carried the whole Movie.. and it would have flopped without her. she was Brilliant..Perfect
Maravillosa Cher
I remember this night so well....I was so happy for Cher, LOVED her speech....she was so humble & down to earth....I always felt that she should have won for Mask.
Cher is beautiful here.
I love Cher but how good was glen close in fatal attraction ughh
Since there are a few intelligent commentators mixed in here with the kindergarten-snarky ones, I'll address the former: sure, there were heavy performers that year, with Ms Close's now-legendary obsession and rabbit-boiling especially well acted. Be sure and check out Cher in “Mask” and “Silkwood!” She was exceptional in both!
My God, Paul Newman was soooo very handsome. He looks like a Greek Statue that has come to life. I just love the way the old stars looked.
what a sweet, sincere speech
Such a class act! Well deserved! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Honestly, I felt any of these 5 exceptionally beautiful and talented actresses deserved to win.. but like many have commented on... Cher's performance in Moonstruck was spellbinding.. Just an observation but wow Meryl Streep was absolutely gorgeous!
I seriously like Meryl Streep's reaction.
Agree and Meryl looked really beautiful here. She is great. And Cher gave a beautiful speech.
"I feel really really good because they were so great"
Thanks for the information update Robert W.
She should be a two-time Oscar winner. First for Mask, second for this.
Yes!! and mermaids well heck all Cher’s movies!
This is one of the best simplest speeches I have seen when someone wins an award.
"I worked ON WITH the movie." Omg she's so cute with that slip
Jesus, Mary, Joseph & all his carpenter friends! No matter what age, Paul Newman was the handsomest man on this planet! And Cher was STELLAR!
Paul Newman is just Class of his own...
I guess I'm on my way.. God, I wish to say this someday... Happy birthday, Cher!!
She's on her way to be an ICON
Cher= #1 hottest, most stunning, woman to look up to EVER!! I'm not into celebs but Cher has been and always will be in a category of her own.
I love Cher so much. She had a though life and look what she accomplished... Talent and hardwork
They should have given FIVE OSCARS out.. all were brilliant. What a competitive category. Wow. Glenn was my choice... but happy for Cher.
Well deserved, such a terrific film.
She looks awesome
Did Disney modeled Hera (Hercules' mom) after Cher at the Oscars. They look alike here.
I've been watching Cher since the movie she made in 1985, MASK and this is a well deserve award for her.
Considering who she was/is...that was an VERY humbling speech :]
I had forgotten about Sally Kirkland and how great she was in Anna. !
all the hater here make me sigh - she won this bc when you watch that movie. you forget she is 'cher' she is just loretta , as an italian - it's epic,
Wow, Cher is so beautiful here.
Cher was brilliant in Moonstruck, but her performance in Silkwood was peerless. An amazingly talented woman.
She is so charming.
CHER WAS SO WONDERFUL IN MOONSTRUCK
NOW THAT WAS A FANTASTIC OSCAR SPEECH! Nothing pretentious, nothing obnoxious, nothing overly emotional as if she was going to shit in her pants. Just an AMAZINGLY gifted performer remainign calm and collected, remembering where she came from and extending gratitude where it was deserved! In my opinion, I think she's a talented music performer but an extraordinarily GIFTED actress!
DIdn't she looked divine! I love her acting....
Now I see where Rihanna got her sheer dress from
Kim k too. They both said it.
yes, Maryl was so happy! and I Love her, too! Cher is very beautiful
I live Cher. I love this movie. Cage was great too...SO GREAT!
I can't believe how the Academy gave Cher the Oscar instead of gave it to Glenn Close, she could have given Cher an acting masterclass... a total shame ....
CHER CAN DO IT ALL,,,,SING, DANCE, ACT....LOVE HER SO
I always loved cher.....
Cher, I adore you!
she's a wonderful person
I love Cher, dare I say she goes beyond even our Madonna? I guess it's who you ask or how we feel from day to day. Anyway seeing her win Best Actress for Moonstruck was just awesome. She is a legend, an icon, a inspiration. Cher is almost damn perfect!!!!
True, I love them both but Cher paved the way for Madonna and Madonna used her influence from Cher to make it bigger

Nah!
I wonder if this was the defining moment that anyone could win an oscar.
She did a phenomenal job in Moonstruck and in my opinion, Cher was hands down the best actress. It's still funny to think about Cher winning an Oscar though
I LOVE THAT MERYL JUMPED UP WHEN CHER WON...MERYL GETS MY VOTE EVERY TIME!
Meryl's reaction 3 she is always so happy for others to win!
This was back in the day when all actresses had talent. It was a difficult choice, but I cast my vote for Cher. Glenn Close would have won in a normal year, but Cher is not normal and she deserved the Oscar ever since Silkwood and Mask!!!
I loved - and love - 'Moonstruck,' but have never considered it an Oscar-worthy film.
What's that got to do with anything? Acting skill is what's being awarded. How good or bad the film is is irrelevant (theoretically anyway).
Moonstruck is an Oscar-winning film - one of those Oscars was for Best Actress. I didn't think Cher's performance was Oscar-worthy.
Fair enough. But I disagree. I thought she deserved it and think she's a much better actor than singer, imo.
that movie was the greatest well deserved award
Yes, for this particular year, Glenn deserved it. I mean, think about it. People win for their body of work often with Oscar.
all equally deserved
this video was upload it originally from the oscar you tube official page..
I would have been happy had Glenn Close won, but I felt happy for Cher and also with the enthusiastic audience support of her because the critics were so cruel to Cher when she first started doing movies. They passed her off as a joke. But Cher is a good actress and it was her time to win.
Sally Kirkland really wanted to win...
talent and starpower
CHER is a class act
I've never seen them stand for an actress like that. Cool.
I LOVE CHER !!!!!!!!!
CONGRATS WELL DESERVED
Omg How Sweet Meryl is! i love them both!
I did. And I have to agree with her. This one was NOT for Cher, but I wouldn't say it was for Sally either. My vote would go to Glenn Close. If you've seen "Fatal Attraction", I'm sure you'll understand :) .
I don't think that this means that I am somebody, but I guess I'm on my way
she needs to be in another movie…she is sooo good. And she's better than most of the actress's we're subjected to. Except Jennifer Lawrence of course
Gee, this was back when the recipients actually had a two minute window to thank people!!
I love me some Cher, but she and Glen Close must have been tight high, because Glen in Fatal Attraction was phenomenal
gorgeous
That's right.... everybody stand!
Glenn Close never won but she will forever have won our hearts
Oh, that was back when she had that beautiful, distinctive mouth! I don't know why she ever had plastic surgery on her lips - her face was always so attractive to me.
Loved!
at 1:59 you can see her losing one of her earrings and saying "shit" xD
What is that theme playing when she won?
the true icon
NORMA ALEANDRO AT 1:58!! MAYBE THAT WAS THE YEAR WHEN "LA HISTORIA OFICIAL" WINS BEST FOREIGN PICTURE
it should have gone:1 Holly Hunter (Broadcast News (1987)2 Glenn Close (Fatal Attraction (1987)3 Sally Kirkland (Anna (1987)4 Cher (Moonstruck (1987)5 Meryl Streep (Ironweed (1987)
Cher deserved 1000 Oscars for Moonstruck
Meryl looks amazing
