- Highigan! Today we are setting up some extra 5 gallon buckets with the GroBuckets kits! They are an insert for any 5gal bucket to create a self watering sub-irrigation system for your plants! Super easy setup and we have been loving them because it gives us more time between waterings. It also has a nice water level indicator. We have been loving them in the 5x5 and want to switch over all our bags to them! You can check them out in the link below! Seen a lot of similar styles,(build a soil doing earthbox run) and sips, but this looks much cheaper and so simple. Thanks for sharing. You two are mad scientists when it comes to growing. Our knowledge grows with you.
Well that makes me really rethink 5 gallon buckets
I've been us8ng grobuckets with my autos. They work great! Use some cover crop with them and they work even better.
Man hats off to Grotek GrowBuckets. I ordered mine after watchin this video immediately and got em yesterday from Florida.,2 and half days from Florida up here to Michigan is quick.
Anyway these are great. Immma order the 10 pack with the floats next and the New Growbuddy thst goes in the 8 gallon fabric pots. So you can still air prune roots. All 3 systems are fantastic. Love the elegance in its simplicity.
Also guys these and the Growfern hanging baskets make great Mother’s Day and Father’s Day gifts.
I absolutely love that you guys try out new things. It’s nice to see if I would want one before buying one. 👍
Not really anything new , self watering planters have been around for over 40 years.
Doing my first grow right now, and after so many problems (day 41) I wish I knew about these before starting my grow. watering as a beginner is so hard at least for me doing auto flowers. In my next grow I am for sure going to be using these. Best part is I can get a pack of 10 for future grows aswell
These sub-irrigated pots work great. Cheaper to make you own I think... use two buckets and a scrap piece of pvc and drill some holes. I agree with most comments about over watering... all through veg cycle, I water once every 1 to 1.5 weeks now. Seems to work pretty well. When I used to water a couple of times a week, I would run into problems.
This product is perfect to keep fungus gnats away. Fungus gnats need the first 2 inches of wet soil to reproduce. So this waters from the bottom and will keep the top layer dry. Brilliant!!!
I have had GroBuckets for outdoor hot peppers for years now. Get black buckets or paint/aluminum foil the bottoms of your buckets up to your drainhole to stop light penetration and algae growth in your water reservoir. An airstone is a great addition to add oxygen to the roots and cut down on the anaerobic funky smells from the bottom of the buckets.
Great ideas. Thanks.
Being retired, we travel a lot for 1-2 weeks at time. I don't have anyone to tend the garden while I'm gone so I think I'll give these a try!!
I run these buckets in flower. Big plants get refilled once a day, lots of transpiration, they’d be bone dry in 2-3 days for sure.
@@Michael-s2p3p Thanks for the reply...I figured as much.
@@brianluschen5411 Sure! Dunno if your experience will be different but I’m running CO2 at 1300 to 1400 ppm and temps 84-85 during light. Maybe a less aggressive system would use less water, but I’m running gallons through these pots. But they work really well, something about that airspace down below. I had the opportunity to kill a couple of males in these pots in first flower, and the root development was absolutely incredible. If I could figure out the ferts I’m sure they would do even better.
These look very much like the buckets Scotty Real is repping his are modified a bit with a a 3 gallon bucket as a resivour and 2 grow buckets attached and a float valve in the 3 gallon. Very interesting. Gonna have to give these a test run. Got a 3 pack on the way.
Nothing beats a quality probe Moisture meter I've used them indoors and out.
So wish we had Menards in the gulf coast of Florida. Love all the great snacks at Menards.
Just bought a 10 pack going to use it for tomatoes, strawberries, and my grow tent thank you!
That damn shovel gone work the shiii out of Heaven!
Glad u took my advice and got to try em out. Glad you guys are enjoying them 😁
I grow in buckets a lot so this is interesting to check out thanks guy's
Nice of yall 2 record 🥂🍿
I've only ever done DWC. I use to start them in rockwool but now I just use small nursery pots. Once they're big enough I let the medium dry out so I can then pop them into the lid of the 5 gallon bucket where they will start to wick the nutrients up and form a really nice root mass. I do recommend using air stones in the bucket so that the nutrients stay evenly mixed, the plants really like it.
What are air stones
Looking forward to seeing it!
Highigan from Virginia! Long time watcher 1st time commenter and it feels good!
Happy to have you fam. Thanks for supporting 🙏 we appreciate you ❤️
What a coincidence! I made a DIY version of this last weekend and I'm planning on switching to Earth box's in my big tent after watching a BuildASoil video. The only issue I've had growing has been over watering so far.
I really want to do the build a soil earthbox grow!
I am doing the Earthbox with living soil in my 2x4's and holy shit its insane. I had to do an emergency scrog on one tent the other day. I thought it was done stretching but it grew 8 inches in one night. This was my 3rd time running this clone and it never did that before(1st time in the earthbox).
@@B_Rand_On saw that and checked out earth boxes; until I saw the price.
@@garywillow6578 I, personally, think it's a quality system and am willing to pay for it. But I agree it isn't great if you're on a budget. I'm just of the mind to buy the best quality I can afford for the given project. To me earthbox seems to be of value.
on my 3rd grow in my earthbox. perfect for a 2x4. topdressing with Dr Earth. results have been very nice.
Wow so easy! Putting those in my cart on Amazon!
I'm new grower and I'm learning alot hear
You're basically doing Hydro no pump something new to see and the checkout Hydro all the way great show much love gyes ✌ 🔥💨
I want to see that lady in that bucket great content great video Great tips Great show ✌
Happy bucket lol
I made my own DIY bucket
V fast growth
Heck yeah!
@@Highigan I will put perlite down the bottom of though
I'll take two please! Seriously though, I should have a chat with these folks. Great video guys!!
Thanks fam. Appreciate ya stopping in. 💚
Nice this is awesome and I can still add the bottle nutes from the top on days I need to feed? Or give the autos some recharge my soil mix usually keeps them healthy all the way thru just really add recharge for the microbes maybe a little bloom/bud booster when they are in flower but not much mostly water recharge and fish shyt I gotta get me a 3 pack dang this is a cheap auto watering game changer thanks for the video you 2 appreciate it
Sip is where it's at! Sub irrigation.
Just like a earthbox. Home depot sells city pickers, basically sane ad a earthbox. They work awesome. Try using a non organic substance like sand or perlite where the soil contacts the water. If the soil sits in the water for to long it will turn anaerobic and totally screw you up. That happened to me. And put a weed barrier fabric in there so nothing falls through into the water. Keep that water clean.. the roots will grow through it.. Also, try putting a air stone in the water. More O2 to the roots
Wow should have proof read that first. Sorry about that
Great tips! I thought about throwing an airstone in there!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Would not have thought of that until too late. Peace and unity in our green community.
@@Highigan this all seem to be versions of dwc type growing. I love anything that has progression about it.
You don't have to use non organic material where the water is. Just have to make sure you let it dry all the way up before you add water again. Thats where I messed up. To many times I had to leave for a few days so I topped off the reservoir before it was empty and dry. Everything was fine at first. But around week 4-5 of flower is when it turned south. I had to learn the hard way i guess
They look awesome! Should make it so easy for traveling
Just got myself 3 of them! These look really cool thanks for the great video!!
Game changer! Thanks for sharing!
I've been making my own bottom watering buckets for a few grows now. 3 and 5 gallon home depot buckets and 12 gallon short/wide containers and won't do it any other way!!! (not to take away from GroBuckt Highigan😁) I'm gone for 12 hrs a day and don't have to worry about anything! It allows me scrogg because I water down the tube with my 2 gallon pump sprayer wand. The soil stays perfectly moist all the time which is what you want for organics. My autos are huge with 1 inch thick stocks in week 2 of flower!!! After top dressing I'll do a half watering from the top 2 time's a week during the stretch and when using recharge with my pump sprayer wand. I suggest inserting a tube in the drain hole to collect it in a Tupperware bowl. Also, don't fill reservoir until plants are established because the roots won't stretch to search for water
I have been using self watering planters (Passive Hydro Pots) for over 35 years. I have ran almost every hydroponics and in my opinion nothing works better. During growth I top feed only and as the roots grow down into the grate they get air pruned just like a air pot. During bloom I start feeding from the bottom, after you start bottom feeding *never feed from the top or your plants could get locked out. They don't really work well with organic or slow reliesed nutrients, good hydroponic nutrients at half strength work the best.
Great tips steve! Thank you!
those are great but I suggest watering from the top until the plant has enough root to reach the bottom. that water can get pretty funky if it sets two weeks before the plants even able to reach it.
Yes agree, didn't mention that in the video but you should not start bottom watering until the plant is established and we'll into veg. They also mention that on the card the comes with the units!
I run these pots. I plant seeds, clones and transplants - water once from the top and never again. I just keep the reservoir filled. You can’t go weeks without watering though…lol. In flower, they get refilled daily. Truth.
That's pretty KooL fam, can't wait to see something growin in it 👍 Keep up the great videos 👍 Cheers ✌️💚✌️
Sooo here i am, im that one guy here in Michigan also that said you guys bother me (i know, im a dick im sorry 😞) , but i like your info. Although ive been extremely critical of the content you WERE pushing at one point, BUT......now that ive watched many of your videos from your very early days, until recently .......I maybe a prick, but, Im man enough to admit when im wrong.
You guys have developed a great brand of YOURSELVES, great relationships it appears with some big companies and youre not exactly doing this for "clicks"....youre actually working as part of the Salesforce for these companies. Being in sales myself and knowing its difficult to open doors with certain companies. You guys have done great working as sorta independent sales and marketing partners with different people. Ac Infinity products youre doing great, im really impressed that youve taken this channel and have used it to grow your actual business. Well done, congratulations on the new home, keep up the great work. Well done. 👍 (and no dude, im not trying to bang your ol lady. I mean...i would 🤷♂️). hahaha. im such a dick. Damnit.
This is perfect for me, thanks guys. 👍🏾
Just got mine. Cant wait to grow some Gannnjjiiii. Awesome channel
Looks like a really cool find!!
This is the same principle as a earth box. But more cost effective. But love videos keep the good work
That's perfectly awsome
Like the fact there are no moving parts that can fail. Great concept, can’t wait to see the results. 😚💨
Just saw the earth box clones in Lowe's and remembered this video...I have to try one out. Fabric pots are overrated anyway 🤪 imho.
Awesome.
I just subscribed…because she’s absolutely gorgeous. That’s the only reason why
I’d put an air stone in the bottom to keep the water aerated.
I thought about that as well!
these look great & for someone like me who is hopeless at watering , looks a winner.. but guess what without making a drama , they are like the equivalent of $110 USD for a 3 pack here....?
I think global shipping costs & the crazy inflation are the issue here sadly
😔
all you need is a pipe, cutter and plastic cover. 3$ diy
@@cohp4d I was thinking the same. Psychedelic unicorn. Funny as fuck.
COOL STUFF 👍👍
I made dyi buckets similar to this....they work AMAZING FAM
Nice cracky method wana try this myself
Thanks for all the tips. And I've been growing for 30 plus years. These autoflowers are very different from the strains I've grown. Have you or anyone grow ole sensi seeds? The SK #1 seems to get better every year.
Good stuff guys love you guys keep killing it
Wrapping the buckets in foil tape or several layers of black paint is highly suggested to stop the light from getting at the water.. Water+light+nutrients=algae.
🔥🔥🔥
Wow that is one impressive product , great review and presentation Highigan ✌
I got to check that out 🤔
What's good fam!! Good find there!! I've been looking for a easy auto watering option without all the outside storage, looks like that could be a game changer!
Do you have a follow up video on these buckets? I bought a set of three, currently doing my first indoor grow with 2 of them in my 2x2 Vivosun tent. I put my Blueberry Auto flower taproot straight in the dirt in the bucket. Seems its very moist. Three days in all looks okay. I guess I will find out..... You guys are great! Keep the info flowing!
these look nice and simple, I hate that they are selling them in a 3 pack or ten pack though, I would like a 4 pack so i could fill a 4x4
Scotty real just did a diy for these with a 5 gallon reservoir. Extends the automation by a few days
Good stuff guys! Will be interested to see how she works!
It’s ironic, I just was wondering where do I get these and this video popped up. 👍🏾
great video guys, hey just a heads up i think scotty from the dudes grow show and real growers is gonna come out with his own kind of grow buckets they look pretty cool there is a video on em. These look really cool and easy i might try them out!
I like his system its really cool! It uses the same insert, but the hole gets placed lower, and he has a reservoir system hooked to it to keep the plants watered for an even longer period of time. The watering principles are the same, just the way the reservoir is setup is different.
This method is simpler, and the intended use of the GroBucket system.
His is a modified version.
I started using auto pots about two months ago and I'm never going back
i literally JUST ordered an ac infinity auto water thing. i wonder if i can cancel my order! i like the looks of this way better!
Have you guys ever snapped a branch on an auto ?? Uhhh I just snapped mine and I’m trying to fix it but it’s only been an hour since I sanapped it and the leaves on that branch are dropping
Pack the bottom with perlite or hydrogen rocks.
Cheers 🍻
Great video. I had seen these awhile ago but forgot the name of them and could not find where I saw them but thanks now I will grab me a few to try out
Have you all every checked out a earthbox, I seen buildasoil using them and it has a bottom watering system as well.
Gardening with Leon on UA-cam has many videos on diy self wicking planters...they are a game changer...airiated self pruning roots. The top 6 in of soil stays dry, that's great for bug's and mold.. the plant can feed as much as it wants 24/7..eliminates over or under watering...Leon gives his formula for grow media ..composted pine bark and cow manure, lime ,gypsum, sea mineral, Epsom salt and sustain (composted chicken shit and turkey feathers)..plus a water soluble fertilizer. ..master blend or nature's choice depending on flower or veg...Leon grows veg in Kingston Oklahoma and is probably the grand daddy of the self wicking planter...I can tell you from my experience that nothing grows better...
I will be ordering some
It may be a strange question...if i use this and transplant from a 1 gallon container would i just fill the reservoir and it will wick up and work? Or should I pre water the medium like normal to kickstart the process?
After top dressing, do you have to only water from the top once or for the rest of the grow?
You guys should’ve just gotten a earthbox so much better but those are pretty cool
Just ordered mine.
My experience with buckets... make sure you get a dark color when choosing a bucket..light colored buckets or thin buckets allow mold and fungus to grow especially if they are outside in the hot sun and the buckets get hot ...buckets work best indoors due to the small resiviour...but work well for the right set up..check out Larry hall on UA-cam for creative 5 gallon bucks videos.. Larry's always got a good tip or 2 for buckets..
when you flush at the end of the flower stage when you have 30 to 50 percent of trichromes amber do you flush and if you do how is it done is it water every day or just when the plants are dry
We chop at 10-25% amber and when the plant looks ready, no flush with organics
Cool thanks but what about before y’all went organic and y’all used bottled nutes cause I just don’t want to ruin my first harvest and my trichromes are just now turning cloudy so if I need to start flushing now to hit the mark for the correct color of trichromes then I would like someone to let me know exactly how to flush and when thanks for your time and help and the great content y’all are awesome keep up the great work
We have two grows. The 5x5 and the 4x4. The 5x5 us organic. Always has been. No need to flush in organics
The bottom ridges should allow enough water to pass through that you could cut the hole on a different side if you wanted to.
You would still need this hole, however more aeration probably wouldn't hurt.
Guys i would work out how to put a air stone in the bottom of the bucket to give the roots plenty of oxygen
Facts! I was just thinking about the amount of stagnant water at the bottom of the bucket
Curious to see the results. Thanks for sharing!
Would these work well when using liquid nuits? 🤔 and how would it work when it com3s to checking the run off is there a run off?
To keep nutes from settling down I wonder will it be a good idea to place an air tube or airstone at the bottom of the bucket
Looks great so at the end of the harvest how do you flush???????
No need to flush with organic runs
Amazon has them 👍
Oh hey. Hello heaven.
Do you wait till these are bone dry before you water? Or do you maintain a range if reserve water?
damn thats bad ass got 2 try 1
Looks like a life saver! Question about the watering with regards to PH. How do you make sure the right ph is maintained for the water your using and thats sitting in the reservoir?
I’m not a grower yet I’m just doing studies but I was gonna tell you that you can run about 4 buckets to one tub that you fill wil nutrients and check the ph and etc like I said I’m new at this I’m just doing studies so please check my work
I never add more than i think the plant can drink is a few days.
During that time, it should keep its ph. I always check my soil ph regularly as well.
@@Highigan thanks
Hey everyone how are yall
would the space remaining be as big as 3 gal of soil? like a 3g air pot ?
Slightly more I would say
Hi guys.
Another great vid.
Not for me as I only use fabric pots, but nice and simple idea. 👏👏👏.
But you can help with sum information on the new ac infinity fans you did a vid on them a couple a weeks ago..
I really want sum. Lol.
Any news on release date please u2.
Keep up the great work. 10 out of 10.
I am about to dive in on a grow trying these. Can these be used successfully with a coco mix, or do you still have to top feed? Thanks for any info. Cheers!
How soon do you fill up the reservoir after your seedling come up from the soil?
👍
Your so buff , you make that shovel look small.👍looks like a slick system.
What would be better , this or the self watering system thst you have ?
If u don't know wether the plant would be tall or short. Would u top it or leave as it is?
Leave it!
Would love to see a video on how it works. Live in action. Does this work wel for coco?
The only problem with setups like these , is there is no runoff. The build up from salt can ruin your harvest...
We don't use salts with thus set up. It's all organic 😁💚
No you absolutely run synthetic drain to waste in these and flush .
You simply water till clean water is coming outta the overflow
