  • Highigan! Today we are setting up some extra 5 gallon buckets with the GroBuckets kits! They are an insert for any 5gal bucket to create a self watering sub-irrigation system for your plants! Super easy setup and we have been loving them because it gives us more time between waterings. It also has a nice water level indicator. We have been loving them in the 5x5 and want to switch over all our bags to them! You can check them out in the link below! Man hats off to Grotek GrowBuckets. I ordered mine after watchin this video immediately and got em yesterday from Florida.,2 and half days from Florida up here to Michigan is quick.
Anyway these are great. Immma order the 10 pack with the floats next and the New Growbuddy thst goes in the 8 gallon fabric pots. So you can still air prune roots. All 3 systems are fantastic. Love the elegance in its simplicity.
Also guys these and the Growfern hanging baskets make great Mother’s Day and Father’s Day gifts.

These sub-irrigated pots work great. Cheaper to make you own I think... use two buckets and a scrap piece of pvc and drill some holes. I agree with most comments about over watering... all through veg cycle, I water once every 1 to 1.5 weeks now. Seems to work pretty well. When I used to water a couple of times a week, I would run into problems.

This product is perfect to keep fungus gnats away. Fungus gnats need the first 2 inches of wet soil to reproduce. So this waters from the bottom and will keep the top layer dry. Brilliant!!!

I have had GroBuckets for outdoor hot peppers for years now. Get black buckets or paint/aluminum foil the bottoms of your buckets up to your drainhole to stop light penetration and algae growth in your water reservoir. An airstone is a great addition to add oxygen to the roots and cut down on the anaerobic funky smells from the bottom of the buckets.

@@brianluschen5411 Sure! Dunno if your experience will be different but I’m running CO2 at 1300 to 1400 ppm and temps 84-85 during light. Maybe a less aggressive system would use less water, but I’m running gallons through these pots. But they work really well, something about that airspace down below. I had the opportunity to kill a couple of males in these pots in first flower, and the root development was absolutely incredible. If I could figure out the ferts I’m sure they would do even better.

I've only ever done DWC. I use to start them in rockwool but now I just use small nursery pots. Once they're big enough I let the medium dry out so I can then pop them into the lid of the 5 gallon bucket where they will start to wick the nutrients up and form a really nice root mass. I do recommend using air stones in the bucket so that the nutrients stay evenly mixed, the plants really like it.

Just like a earthbox. Home depot sells city pickers, basically sane ad a earthbox. They work awesome. Try using a non organic substance like sand or perlite where the soil contacts the water. If the soil sits in the water for to long it will turn anaerobic and totally screw you up. That happened to me. And put a weed barrier fabric in there so nothing falls through into the water. Keep that water clean.. the roots will grow through it.. Also, try putting a air stone in the water. More O2 to the roots

You don't have to use non organic material where the water is. Just have to make sure you let it dry all the way up before you add water again. Thats where I messed up. To many times I had to leave for a few days so I topped off the reservoir before it was empty and dry. Everything was fine at first. But around week 4-5 of flower is when it turned south. I had to learn the hard way i guess

I've been making my own bottom watering buckets for a few grows now. 3 and 5 gallon home depot buckets and 12 gallon short/wide containers and won't do it any other way!!! (not to take away from GroBuckt Highigan😁) I'm gone for 12 hrs a day and don't have to worry about anything! It allows me scrogg because I water down the tube with my 2 gallon pump sprayer wand. The soil stays perfectly moist all the time which is what you want for organics. My autos are huge with 1 inch thick stocks in week 2 of flower!!! After top dressing I'll do a half watering from the top 2 time's a week during the stretch and when using recharge with my pump sprayer wand. I suggest inserting a tube in the drain hole to collect it in a Tupperware bowl. Also, don't fill reservoir until plants are established because the roots won't stretch to search for water

I have been using self watering planters (Passive Hydro Pots) for over 35 years. I have ran almost every hydroponics and in my opinion nothing works better. During growth I top feed only and as the roots grow down into the grate they get air pruned just like a air pot. During bloom I start feeding from the bottom, after you start bottom feeding *never feed from the top or your plants could get locked out. They don't really work well with organic or slow reliesed nutrients, good hydroponic nutrients at half strength work the best.

Gardening with Leon on UA-cam has many videos on diy self wicking planters...they are a game changer...airiated self pruning roots. The top 6 in of soil stays dry, that's great for bug's and mold.. the plant can feed as much as it wants 24/7..eliminates over or under watering...Leon gives his formula for grow media ..composted pine bark and cow manure, lime ,gypsum, sea mineral, Epsom salt and sustain (composted chicken shit and turkey feathers)..plus a water soluble fertilizer. ..master blend or nature's choice depending on flower or veg...Leon grows veg in Kingston Oklahoma and is probably the grand daddy of the self wicking planter...I can tell you from my experience that nothing grows better...

It may be a strange question...if i use this and transplant from a 1 gallon container would i just fill the reservoir and it will wick up and work? Or should I pre water the medium like normal to kickstart the process?

My experience with buckets... make sure you get a dark color when choosing a bucket..light colored buckets or thin buckets allow mold and fungus to grow especially if they are outside in the hot sun and the buckets get hot ...buckets work best indoors due to the small resiviour...but work well for the right set up..check out Larry hall on UA-cam for creative 5 gallon bucks videos.. Larry's always got a good tip or 2 for buckets..

when you flush at the end of the flower stage when you have 30 to 50 percent of trichromes amber do you flush and if you do how is it done is it water every day or just when the plants are dry

    • @Highigan

We chop at 10-25% amber and when the plant looks ready, no flush with organics

Cool thanks but what about before y’all went organic and y’all used bottled nutes cause I just don’t want to ruin my first harvest and my trichromes are just now turning cloudy so if I need to start flushing now to hit the mark for the correct color of trichromes then I would like someone to let me know exactly how to flush and when thanks for your time and help and the great content y’all are awesome keep up the great work

The bottom ridges should allow enough water to pass through that you could cut the hole on a different side if you wanted to.

    • @Highigan
      @Highigan  2 роки тому

You would still need this hole, however more aeration probably wouldn't hurt.

During that time, it should keep its ph. I always check my soil ph regularly as well.

No you absolutely run synthetic drain to waste in these and flush .
You simply water till clean water is coming outta the overflow
