The first big tug the Gainer is a 1500hp single screw tug and the Sarter is even bigger a twin screw @ 3000hp and most Great Lakes tugs are ice strengthened so no problem breaking that thin ice.

You could have gone another hour north where I grew up and rode the ferries as they broke ice heading to Washington island. I've seen those tugboats tons of time but this is the first of them actually moving, thanks for the video.

Years ago loaded log trucks crossed Lake Champlain on ice. Every once a while one didn't follow the route made by older men and went through the ice to the bottom of the lake, these men called their insurance agent, the agents laughing could be heard for miles, no insurance covered going through the ice. Insult was the truck had to be recovered at the owners expense, those men went bankrupt. Years ago it was a lot colder, we drove cars, vans and pick up to ice fishing shanties, pull toy here.

I've worked on that tug for years. Use to be the Margaret Ann when Holly Marine owned it outta Chicago. It sank and Calumet river fleeting bought it.

Well isn't that precious, Poppa Tug with Momma Tug leading baby Tug through the ice. The sound of the tugboats wake cracking the ice on the beach is kind of cool. Russia and Canada have some really cool ice breaking ships. Cool video. 👍🏻🥶

While the second one, Donald J. Sarter, was built in Louisiana in 1964, 3000 hp, but make of engine unspecified (probably EMD). Acquired by her present owners in 2020 and named after the founder of the company, who drowned in a boating accident in 2019
