Why MSFS2020 is incredible and awful, all inside 1 approach

  • Update: This video now 3 weeks old highlighted a bunch of issues with MSFS2020 & Fenix A320. Yesterday day ago Fenix (the makers of the A320 seen in the video) released an update together with a changelog and ALL the issues raised in this video were addressed. Some things were fixed entirely, others improved, while some remain on a "known issue - todo list". I've already tested it under similar conditions, and can confirm GS-mini behaving much better, no sudden wing drops, and improved roll behaviour at slow speeds. OP follows:
MsFS2020 holds a special place in the sim world as being by FAR the best and the worst at various points. Simming is my hobby, I've many payware/modules over the various flight sims, and both flying (powered) & gliding scholarships behind me from cadet days.
While this is far from professional fighter pilot stuff, I like to think this gives my opinion on these subjects a little context.
A subscriber to the channel recently suggested I compare the various simulators, and until I will do, here's a "typical situation" that I wanted to share with folk who are maybe "DCS purists" - I happened to be recording live, in the later stages of an interesting approach, that sums up perfectly why I find this game amazing, and yet why it doesn't come close to replacing any of the other sims I use.
If only we could take the best parts from all the sims, eh?

Considering the maximum tail-wind landing rating for an A320 is 10 knots...Wind is never just, as you said 'stable' you were catching gusts because MSFS has wind gusts. You exceeded maximum ratings for the aircraft while not being stabilized on an an approach prior to entering said conditions. Carrying 120 knots in the turn, then catching the tailwind dropping down into 110 knots and a wingdrop when you spoiled the airflow over the wing by commanding the right roll, A320 uses spoilers along with ailerons for roll control. This is you putting yourself into a regime where the jet will not fly. Also the wind indicator on these jets is an estimate, not a statement of fact. its the pitostatic system combined with gps and such to calculate an estimate of the winds.
As far as crashes go, MSFS in its entire history has never modeled crashes, except the 'to desktop' ones. It is clearly a design choice by them and that's fine. Here you have crashes turned off else the thing would have simply stopped and said 'you crashed'

Hijacking top comment for visibility. There was until the newest update which came out yesterday, a bug in the flightmodel where the flap lift coefficient was slightly too low causing stalls to happen prematurely and landing V/S inertia being too high on the flare. That being said I still agree with all the points in the above comment. The tailwind was higher than the operational limits of the aircraft and combined with the circling approach you put the aircraft in a position very prone for this to happen.

Also the instant recovery and weird behavior was probably due to toolbar pushback bug.

It's funny to see amateurs complaining when pilots agree on the flight behaviour more often then not. How do you want to know, what's your frame of reference? OMG.
You don't always get an "windshier" warning and there is a lag between a sudden occuring event and the system displaying it. Did you notice the terrain and OMG why is your wing dropping while turning in the open East?! Here you have your answer, mountain, water, east and wind - You should figure that out...
And there is a reason for tailwind limits - you have huge barn doors on the plane, imagine what wind does to it and how this would impact the flight path in low speed regime.
The safety systems can't protect you from not flying it correctly. Highly likely under this conditions this approach isn't legal at all and you at least should factor in a surcharge in speed which then - again - makes this approach stupid at the first place in a short runway like Santos Dumont.
Certainly the simulation is not perfect and the sudden changes in weather are annoying. Yet you showed that you don't factor in so many thing that could explain the behaviour other then... "it has to be the sim". Most crashes in aviaton are caused by human error. Why should it be different in a simulation? 💙

Keep in mind as well the more you turn the higher the stall speed will be due to the load factor. Since you were very close to the Yellow bar, and tailwind, by using entire aileron it kind reacted like a spoiler in some way and created more drag leading the wing to stall

UPDATE: The Fenix A320 was updated yesterday (3 weeks after I uploaded this video) and ALL ISSUES highlighted in this video have been addressed - some fixed, some partially, the others marked WIP or "known bug"... Is it possible someone from Fenix saw this video and realised "yep, this needs looking at" - So thanks for watching and leaving your thoughts or a like, I suspect a team effort here has achieved good, in a tiny way, and gotten the issues highlighted in this video to Fenix's attention, who deemed it important enough to put right. Thanks

This has nothing to do with msfs specifically but with a big bug in the fenix fly by wire. The current fly by wire cannot properly handle turbulence. This shows in low speed turns. From what i understand they are working hard to get it fixed.
To be fair the msfs implementation of turbulence is still a bit aggressive, but tweaks are being made.

ND wind arrow will be a result taken from other aircraft inputs, usually GPS data (at least the 777 is), therefore it is not an instantaneous reading of the actual wind at that precise moment. If I had a dollar for everytime I had a wing drop or even 3 at low level in the 777 whilst the wind arrow displays a steady 5kts TW... of course, that had nothing to do with pesky A380 that landed 2 minutes ahead of me. MSFS or aircraft modelling aside, my point is that no readout in the cockpit will be showing the exact environmental conditions you are facing at that precise moment. As for your example I'd say the initial wing drop and recovery was a fair and realistic representation of what happens in RL, certainly on the 777 (memories of a recent approach into Taipei), after that clearly MSFS has given up... Happy Landings !!!

MSFS in general for all aircraft has really terrible flight modeling. I had high hopes for it back in early 2020, looking at the aerodynamic presentations. But now that I've played it, I absolutely hate it. Looks pretty, but it means nothing if it won't be a simulation like it's sold to be.

120 knots and with a tailwind is way to slow. and since right aileron reduces lift on the right wing combined with that low of an airspeed i would guess the wing did stall.

honestly the bad things were almost all ur fault, been using msfs2020 since it came out so ik what im taking about. The aggressive right roll should not have happened and the aircraft responded in the right way. Also the clicking spots were rushed, never had a problem with them. Sorry man but inaccurate video.

@@DCSDigitalCombatSimulator Wrong. Airbus gives you the ref speed +5. and the pilot has to add half of the wind speed during the approach to that number as a provision for gust or wind sudden change of direction. This explains why the aircraft stalled.

Simmer since MSFS1 and retired pilot....... I have a nice setup and at one time attempted flying IFR routes by the book and its a exercise in futility especially using ATC. Brushing up or preflying routes never went as IRL. Good for knowing the navaids, topography and not coming in cold. The sound of imaginary ATC sitting on my shoulder yelling at me have long faded yet MSFS gives me ptsd like flying into KATL every night did. Now I enjoy busting enough regs to keep the FAA busy for days and roaring into a class b airspace unannounced is my thrill not shooting complex approaches.

I really like MSFS 2020. But the user interface was made by 6th graders. It is a complete joke,,, that isn't funny at all. It is sad, to say the least. And you can't expand the windows in the UI. Nor can you expand the marketplace window either. It is my hope, that whomever approved this mess, was fired on the spot for being so stupid.

Nope. All previous sims didn’t have enough. MSFS sill has its issues for sure but the flight model has been improved a lot. It now gives me the same feeling as flying in real life now. I’m talking about the 172. I can’t speak for the other planes.

You're talking about FSX though, which was known for it's linear, unrealistic flight model and in-air behaviour. MSFS 2020 is a completely different game. The only thing it shares with it's predecessor is the Microsoft brand name. The flight model in this on is quite decent actually, and I'm seeing more and more comparison videos of people saying the flight model is not at all what it used to be in the older sims. What ever we see here is quite curious, however I've got over 400 hours in now and haven't had that happen to me yet. There'll always be little bugs here and there, just like in any other complex simulator.

The physics difference is over-exaggerated. There are side by side vids and they are very similar with MSFS2020 actually being more realistic in some scenarios and vice-versa. X-Plane 12 has a known lack-of-turbulence issue that makes flying unrealistically easy at times.
