    Green firewood.........Not good. If you use it this winter be sure to clean your chimney/stove pipe this spring because the sap will accumulate inside and create creosote which is a fire risk. I hate using green firewood, it just doesn't feel like it produces the same heat as properly seasoned hard wood.

I can see you're holding off on inside projects for when the Winter comes. Good organization is important to getting a long term project done. Can't wait to see the outbuilding go up in the future. center block under the tank.. 980 gallons x 4.2 pounds per gallon.. 4,100 pounds.. will the skip loader lift one end.. can you put a piece of old siding in and push the block in with the tank strapped to the jeep on one end and the pickup on the other to stop it from sliding off.. while you use the tractor to push the center block in with the bucket.. i am amazed the driver filled the tank with the center block missing. or he would have made you install one or something while he waited..

      A propane explosion is something that would wipe out the entire house... and everyone nearby. I love propane, but it sure is dangerous. One would think a large cradle would support a 1000 gal tank best vs those feet. Cement blocks not installed under the frost line is suspect also as shifting may be unequal and support once again only on two blocks.

    • @lightitrun5209
      @lightitrun5209 5 років тому +2

      I used to deliver propane, and because of expansion of the propane we were only allowed to fill a tank to it's 80% capacity or in your case 800 gallons of a 1000 gallon tank for safety reasons as not to trigger the safety blow off valve. I would have been ordered back to pump off the overfill, disciplined and probably fired.

  • @Milosz_Ostrow
    @Milosz_Ostrow 5 років тому +49

    Why one gigantic propane cylinder, where a single-point failure in the plumbing can result in loss of the entire fuel supply? I would have opted for several smaller cylinders, separated by manual shut-off valves.

      benjamin mellingen 100% completely safe, lp gas code states it has to be 25 foot from building. And nothing wrong with it being there. It’s in a pressure sealed tank it’s. It like there is leaking propane flowing out of It, if installed correctly and up to code then there are no issues to be concerned about.

Maybe it’s because I live in Arkansas and I’ve been on some insane unpaved roads but I think it has more to do with the way I see it on the screen. Please don't burn that green wood in that Lopi.
    This is extremely dangerous because this will create a abundance of creosote which will cause chimney fires. The stove is one of the most efficient stoves out there with the ceramic baffle and when you get a hot fire look into the firebox at the baffle. The flame should be burning a bluish flame.
    That is fine if you want to cut the trees but wait to use the wood until next year. You will increase the BTUs and the Lopi will work as it should. Not telling you what to do but for safety sake I ask you to research this. Chimney fires NEVER happen when it is convenient. Beautiful home and family, your a blessed man.

      Red Poppy Ranch still close to four years usage by your estimates. I understand the comfort gained from knowing your energy supplies are sorted, but personally I would have done things slightly differently.
      By far your biggest use of propane will be water heating. I would have invested in a large thermal store connected to either a biomass boiler or a simpler wood stove with a propane boiler backup. We have been using tankless water heaters in the UK for twenty five years now and they still suck. They are less efficient than a well insulated tank connected to a conventional condensing boiler, and always fail when you need them most. The constant on off operation kills them inside five years, if scale doesn't get them first. Stored hot water is much more reliable, and you can connect multiple heat sources to it. Look into a proper thermal store, not a traditional US style gas water heater which are actually banned here because they are so inefficient and potentially dangerous under fault conditions.

    With all that propane you should put small heaters in your bathrooms. I’ve had a 10,000 btu in my bathroom on natural gas for 20 years. Having it allows us to keep the house cooler in winter (60 degrees). We turn it on high with the door shut and in minutes it’s over 80 degrees and the cost is only about $5.00 a month. The 60 degree house temperature probably saves at least $50.00 a month on our central heating system and you have a really warm bathroom that my wife can’t do without. Sometimes she takes long showers and the temperature will be 90 degrees in the bathroom/sauna.
    I really enjoy following your story. Keep up the good work and thanks for all you do.

Hoping the storm you guys are getting will pass you by. Re: the firewood, for this year where you're getting settled, have you thought about buying wood? I know I know, sounds sacrilige with so much around, but when you factor in the number of hours to cut a cord and split vs what it would cost you per hour to hire someone to do the other projects you have in your pipeline, it might make sense to buy some this year and cut some this fall/winter for seasoning for use next year, just some food for thought. The stress created in the center by the weight and the slight sagging will definitely cause dangerous problems in the near future. I would also think seriously about placing some of those steel and concrete reinforced parking poles around the perimeter of the tank so a car will run into them (and stop) and not crash into the tank.
