- some want it to be called GNU/Linux. but don't care about other projects using GNU tools :O
what about
GNU/FreeBSD?
GNU/Haiku?
or do you only care about Linux as it is popular?
in that case you all don't care about anything than your ego!!

Let me interject for a moment. What you guys are referring to as GNU/Linux, is in fact, BusyBox/systemd/KDE/VLC/Firefox/apk/Linux.
What you guys are referring to as Android is in fact linux then. Though no one at google will agree with you.
@@deckard5pegasus673 I was referencing Alpine Linux, not Android, though I get the confusion when both package formats are called apk.
@@deckard5pegasus673 No, that is Android/Linux (as opposed to, say, Android/Fuschia)
Angry danish kid yelling at Linux
OH BE QUIET! 🥱
Honestly, BSD is more fun for me to play around with these days. The Linux desktop by itself has gotten boring.
kinda agree. Linux is now more about being better than everyone else and fight everyone else than the tech
I agree FreeBSD is overall a better system, but I like gaming too, and Linux is objectively good at it now while FreeBSD still feels like Linux did before proton, now I understand, before you say "anti-cheat" and "Windows" yeah, but so far over 15k titles work for Linux that is a few thousand more titles than any console, so yes, objectively good at it even if it still falls short from windows.
Now overall, if you are not into gaming, and just use the PC for stuff like editing, servers, office work, be on youtube, yeah FreeBSD is good is really good, I have it on my work laptop cause I don't game in it and wouldn't change it for anything.
But if you like gaming then Linux is definetly the way to go in this.
That's why I say, "use whatever you want to and feels right"
Maybe FreeBSD will catch up to linux in this and then, hey, I will switch immediatly to FreeBSD no second thoughts.
Or maybe I'm saying this and you know something I don't about gaming on FreeBSD, completely possible, if so please tell me how cause for the sake of me I can install steam, download the titles, but only been able to play 3 of my 150 steam list while I can play 146 of 150 in Linux (The remaining 4 I play them on a windows HDD which I only use to play those 4 ahah, freaking EA launcher)
I was a gentoo and arch user for almost 10 years and enjoyed it immensely. It wasn’t until about 3 years ago that I started really seeing the new younger Linux crowd appear. I do like more are getting interested, but it frustrates me how they view it as a status symbol. Now for my work I go between macOS and Ubuntu as both are stable and Apple’s ARM computers are just incredible, especially from the used market. I don’t say I use Unix operating systems, I say I use macOS and Ubuntu. Just keep it simple.
Honestly Kent, can you make a video explaining the Gentoo install?
Specifically providing more context than your average Gentoo install?
Such as: Your average Gentoo install doesn't tell you if your Stage3 extracted files should be appearing in the Mounted folder (I found this confusing, perhaps I was doing something wrong?)
oh well, a next element of a cult of the best desktop gaming system with unforgettable community 😆
Depends on the audience. I some times work with guys that call it NT kernel.
Would you make a video about how to spot if someone knows what is talking about?
Vivi minha vida inteira só pra ver o Sérgio Sacani falando sobre Linux
So after this video, it turns out, that now there is no single way to name it without making someone mad 🙄
yup lol
nvidia/windturbine/powercable/linux joking aside, linux is just just easier to say. and some of the GNU tools have some way to complex names while linus sort of named the os after himself. GNU can be said as G.N.U or genew. etc etc the gnu names have a lot of these
100% agree with the message communicated in this video. However, there is one thing I think is wrong. 1:46 True, the GNU part of Linux isn't the biggest part, but the GNU tools are the fundamentals that go with the kernel: the bare minimum set of tools for the userspace to interact with the kernel. So all the GNU projects that are shipped with a distro might not be the biggest part of the distro, but they are by far the most historically influential.
If you have some time to kill, check historical videos about GNU tools development in the 80's / 90's. It's really interesting to see how everything morphed together with the birth of the Linux kernel.
That being said, I still stay Linux and not G-N-U Linux!
What toolchain was used to compile the kernel and software of the distribution you are using?
Clang+LLVM.
can be done is clang :P
Having compiled Linux From Scratch many times over the years, I know clang can be used. I also know a vast majority of distributions, 100% of the GNU/Linux distributions, use GCC, GLibc, and Binutils.
@@psybertao still Linux system :)
Yes, a GNU/Linux system is still a Linux system. Which you can legitimately describe as a GNU/Linux system. No one has the right to say they shouldn't be described as GNU/Linux systems or has a legitimate argument against doing so.
That would be even more arrogant than saying you have to call them GNU/Linux systems.
Sailing on RMS Butthurd gets you into rough seas, eh?
someone tell Anthony and Wendyll with level1tech's this. I really love your argument I thought maybe it was an ego trip because I did ask myself when I was learning about Linux for my job. "Why is it called GNU/Linux when there's only a few tools he submitted and the rest of it is other stuff. Why does GNU get more recognition than say, the Wayland project?" Well now I know.
The Wayland project isn't the best example, as _it_ is a conglomeration of Gnome, Plasma, and various wlroots subprojects. The better example, and one where there are architectural differences that actually matter, is SystemD. The differences between a musl system and an glibc system are fairly minor to the end user. The differences between a bash system and a busybox system are likewise minor. The differences between a SystemD system and an OpenRC or SysV system? Huge.
I want the background music.
Sleep lightly. The Stallman will be coming for you 😆
you should setup adblock or adguard on your router or firewall device.
You are the sole reason that I still watch Linux clips on UA-cam😂🎉
I think the car analogy is a bit incorrect. The generalised term is "vehicle" meaning all kinds of transportation like cars, motorcycles, mopeds, airplanes, helicopters and so on. Linux is the "vehicle" while the distributions are the different types of car manufacturers all with different branding. Linux is the vehicle that drives all kinds of file servers, web servers, embedded systems and so on, while the distributions are the car manufacturers and the different car brands.
Speaking of the Grammar police, GNU/Linux is pronounced as "gnoo", like the animal gnu, not as "G" "N" "U". Being even more pedantic, I think I've heard somewhere it's supposed to be pronounced as "gnoo slash Linux", haha. I am sorry Kent, it's a personal pet peeve of mine. :P
i use arch gnu/linux by the way
oh, me too!!!
Also I manually installed Arch.
No, it's terminal + terminal + terminal + terminal + terminal + terminal + terminal
🤔😒🙄
To be fair GNU part helps to differentiate normal linux from atrocities like Android, ChromeOS, or KaiOS.
Chrome os is gnu/linux though..I remember seeing a tutorial of installing its ui on Ubuntu on omgubuntu. And then now we got chimeras bsd/linux will we ignore it being linux too?
@@UbuntuPersonNoMint Are you sure? I was considering getting a chrome device as a backpack laptop but derided against it after learning you can't practically replace the os with linux. I mean someone probably can but I'm not fluffing about with every update.
@@ginger_toggaf It varies between each device. I think some of them might have a normal bios or coreboot these days. I had to install coreboot on mine with some utility, I think I had to remove a certain screw to disable write protection. But now I can install any OS I want.
@@OtnerNaut Oh, wow. Good to know at leash some x86 chromebooks are usable.
We still say 2.5 inch drive even though no part of a 2.5 inch ssd is actually 2.5 inches
It's just the name of the form factor now.

🤣🤣🤣 OS Wars lol hahaha
Requesting pop filter.
Honestly at this point unless your whole UI is bash and emacs, you're not running "GNU/Linux"
Ive gotten those folks before i just laugh. 😂
GNU/Linux can actually be a more confusing way to refer to and understand "linux." No, GNU/Linux is NOT the same thing as Linux. If I am talking about the Linux kernel, and some guy corrects me to say "GNU/Linux" this not a correction. I am talking about the KERNEL and NOT GNU software.
I don't mind people sayig "it's actually GNU/Linux, since imho all Torvald's great work on the OS, plus the name "Linux" has usurped the rightful position of GNU. He could have justly continued to call it just e.g. "GNU OS", but he (understandably) wanted to claim more recognition and PR.
Chimera bsd/linux enters the chat
Hey Kent 🤣
This Microsoft Kent sucks…bring back the old Kent

also the old Kent said the same things I do now, I just did not make videos about it ;)
I like your madness.
GNU / Linux would have been a useful distinction of desktop Linux and other Linux OSes (Android / Linux comes to mind, especially as there are experimental alt kernels - Android / BSD or Android / Fuschia, anyone?). Guess we have to find something else. Gnome / Linux?
Today GNU / Linux is largely irrelevant as systemd has replaced most of the GNU ecosystem. So it should be systemd / Linux. Maybe. :)
I can agree the question is largely irrelevant, especially as every single Linux distro is their own OS in their own right, though they share a ton of features. At the same time, what is on a Linux based router has very little in common with a desktop...
So, if GNU / Linux bothers you, just freaking use the distro name :P
They win it's Linux/GNU just rolls of the tounge. I hope we can all agree that GNU will take over the world and everone will use gnu on their desktop
There is no system but GNU and Linux is one of it's kernels.
I think you have so much to learn that I can't even start to explain how wrong you are
Yeah, I have and always will just call it linux. Everyone that uses the platform knows what that is. Anyone that doesn't sure as fuck won't know or care what the hell GNU is or anything about richard stallman. If they don't know much about pc's they won't even know what linux is so adding anything to the name is just pointless as fuck. Unless the conversation is about what distro we're using then I will mention that but anything else is just pointless.
I use to say GNU/Linux back in the early days as it was really force down your throat in the IRC channels people would get MAD af so i just got use to saying it... but really I personally think Linux is the best term for it all as for one thing it sounds better and I just like the name sounds better and GNU is just a shell and it has useful tools, but yeah Linux sounds better and should be call only Linux stop forcing GNU/Linux down our throats anyhow ... i'm really getting tired of linux after 25 years using it man im almost to the point im about to totally give it all up and use macOS and Windows.
How dare you! (love your vids)
Android very much is linux, even though it handles more like some weird embedded system then a real one.
then macOS is FreeBSD.
I just call it 'nix. I think stallman and dt are the ones using gnu. stallman and logic....lmfao!!! YOU HAVE TO SAY ENDEAVOUROS GNU SLASH LINUX!!
GNU isn't an initialism. Consider yourself triggered. 😉
what ever ill just call it linux
...ok I am going to follow your logic, then answer this question: why do so many people get butt hurt if I call Android a Linux?? Android literally used the linux kernel. In fact ChatGPT AI got mad at me for calling Android Linux.
So if Android is not Linux, and Linux is supposedly *anything* that has to do with the linux kernel, your argument falls apart.
The day Android is advertised as Linux, and people accept Android is a Linux disto, then I'll stop saying GNU/Linux. Until then, everyone is just hypocrites.
Listen to yourself lol, you had an argument with an artificial intelligence xD is that really something you wanna share to everyone?
It's GNU/Linux/Systemd
FreeBSD chads just saying "FreeBSD": 🗿

LMAO We run OpenRC in this house!
systemd = bloated cancer. So it is really GNU-Bloated cancer-linux
@@bogartwilley Nah we run dinit in this house :3
In truth it's not "GNU/Linux" - it's actually "GNU OS".
.
(I just call it "Linux")
I think Alpine Linux has not GNU
Alpine is based around the non GNU musl, BusyBox, and OpenRC, but can use GNU tools were needed. For instance BusyBox Tar doesn't handle certain attributes, so it becomes nescesary to install GNU tar, etc. I use Gentoo, Alpine, postmarketOS (Alpine based distro) on various machines.
@@crayzeape2230and then we even got chimera bsd/linux now that doesn't use gnu too
Before saying GNU/Linux, ask yourself: Does this apply to Alpine? Does this apply to Android? Does this apply to buildroot? Does this apply to musl? If yes to any of the above, you mean _Linux_ . Most of the time when people _say_ GNU/Linux, whatever they are saying applies to at least one of those non-gnu systems.
Uhm aktually 🤓☝️
consider me a complete clueless user, so question and try make it as simple as it gets, is garuda linux free non-commercial open source distribution?
Deese bullsheet makes muh ballzache! Gnu-fooking way! 🤣
Well said!
I am super mad, you are super wrong. Take my like and drink beer.
I have to agree. GNU is a term for free software is general public license. Its a part of the OS model, you have the kernel, you have desktop distribution and so on. Microsoft the company the OS is Windows. That OS has different parts of the OS as well. What can we call software that could be installed into Windows that is a part of Linux? What about all the software that you could install into Windows? Are you saying if I install Linux into Windows PC that is called Linux PC? How do you call slap of Windows 10 and rest of the software like libreoffice, WSL and so is Linux or GNU or Windows?
GNU+LINUX (fixed)
what are you fixing ?
That kernel thing.. Kernel in Android and Debian are build from nearly identical source. Some configuration differences for sure so bits are not identical. There are changes in bits too when kernel is updated between OS releases. So both "Linux", but it sounds stupid to talk about Linux. I don't think there is any other meaningful generalization for other than developers who build software that somehow interacts with that low level Linux interfaces.
go read the android kernel dev page and you will see how wrong you are .
