The Fairmont The Plan

  • I think every build should start with a good plan. You need to figure out what it is you want to accomplish before you start paying out your hard earned money on a vehicle build. In this video I talk about my plans for my 1979 Ford Fairmont. For those of you not familiar, this is a Fox body vehicle which is the same chassis as the Ford Mustang from 1978-1992. That means that most of the parts that fit a Mustang of that vintage, fit this car. I'm not the first person to think of this, but I hope to put my own unique spin on this build to make it my own. I think you'll enjoy what I have in store for the Fairmont. If nothing else, it will make for a bunch of new and interesting videos this season. I can't wait to get started. FYI, that will likely be summer 2015.
    Thanks for watching.

      What is the purpose of putting the battery back into the rear? Is it about weight distribution? Because to my knowledge, it doesn't seem to make any sense to have the main battery anywhere else than in the engine bay (but my knowledge is limited).

    • @ericthecarguy
      @ericthecarguy  9 років тому +2

      Seegal Galguntijak Yes, weight distribution and also keeping it's temperature more constant.

      Seegal Galguntijak You put the battery over the passage rear wheel for better launch

      Gauges would look good on the glove box angled to face the driver, battery in the back, more room in the engine bay :)

      EricTheCarGuy Thanks for explaining. I hadn't thought about temperature issues with a normal lead acid battery, but I guess they are there, depending on what it's used for (although you don't have much to power it in the final car, with all the manual stuff, LOL). About the gauges: I really think this car should also have a tachometer, even if it isn't absolutely necessary. And I am glad you chose the manual, I love driving standards, and I hate it that even here in Germany, where the most cars were manuals for a long time, with the newer models, the different types of automatic transmissions start spreading like a disease... (Hell, we can't even get the newest Subaru Outback with gas engine + manual transmission, only CVT, just the diesel is still available with a shifter).

    This video has blown my mind. I used to own an '83 Fairmont (a hand-me-down from my grandfather) and it was such a nightmare of a junk car. Used to idle high and want to take off and I'd have to stand on the brake to keep it from rear ending people in traffic, except when it would idle low in traffic and just quit. I've never missed that car for a second. Now someone is taking a Fairmont and turning it into a secret Mustang. Wow.

    Eric I would strongly recommend power steering in this build. A long time employee of my dads built a fox body mustang with the 302 the 5 speed and the works but he had manual steering. It was damn near impossible to drive with that much power and manual tramission and needing both hands to steer, he ended up switching it back to power steering, just my $0.02

    • @ericthecarguy
      @ericthecarguy  9 років тому +3

      Upstate Redneck I've considered that, but if I need to switch over I can later. The rack I'm looking at is linked in the description. I don't think it will be all that bad, but I'll find out soon enough.

    • @ratbert86
      @ratbert86 9 років тому +3

      EricTheCarGuy If you're going for stealth, I assume you're going to keep the stock steering wheel. That thing is plenty big and you'll be fine, even when parallel parking. I know you know this but some here seem to not: A manual rack is designed to be manual. It's not the same effort as a power steering rack with the pump disconnected or engine off.
      Since you're converting to 5 lug, late model Crown Vic police cars came with 17" steel wheels - plentiful and cheap. If nothing else you can use them for fitment tests and to move the car around in the shop.

    • @ratbert86
      @ratbert86 9 років тому +2

      ratbert86 Just saw the part where you said you're ditching the wheel. Might as well switch to a tilt column too since you're gonna use this as a driver.

      My 67 Mustang had manual steering, a top loader four speed and 50 series tires on all four corners. While driving it was no problem steering and the only difficulty was parallel parking but even that wasn't too bad. Of course, I did climb poles for a living and did weight work outs too.

    • @Overkill14
      @Overkill14 9 років тому

      I hope this works out for you but if it feels like it's too heavy or it's unsafe to drive with no power steering, we won't judge you if you put in a power rack

    I admire your research and planning on this build. Too many Honda guys just want to drop any B or K without doing any research at all, then come crying when it doesnt run right and they are bogged down with CEL's. Your attention to detail before even starting the project is a rare thing in this hobby.

    I just found your site after researching hydroboost brake systems. Your Fairmont series brings back memories. Back in 1990, my newer car that I couldn't afford to fix broke down. So, my future, and current in-laws, loaned me their 1977 flat worn out Fairmont to drive until I could make enough to fix my vehicle. It was a light blue two door, with a 4cyl Pinto engine and 4spd manual transmission. Lets just say, that driving it in our mountainous region was somewhat of an adventure. And, every hill you came to, left you praying just to get to the top. Car is still setting on the farm in the edge of the woods somewhere.

      nick sinclair Yeah but the ecoboost is a piece of dogs sh_t compared to the Australian i6 turbo. Factory 400hp not much would need to be done maybe a tune & some bigger injectors to get over 550bhp. Plus it would be less weight over front so better steering & personally it would awesome to scare the shit out a few of those LS motors

    You need a 1985 5.0 out of a mustang. 1st year of the roller cam, last year of the carb. It will be almost a 100% bolt in since both are fox body.

    • @Krithusful
      @Krithusful 9 років тому +4

      EricTheCarGuy If you're looking for a donor engine, I don't think the mustangs are where you should be looking at. The ones from 91-98 Explorers are where you should start looking. They come with a set of GT40P heads which flow a lot better than the ones on the 5.0 Mustangs. I imagine you're doing some sort of top end overhaul so you're going to switch the camshaft to something more aggressive. With the GT40P, you would need to upgrade the valve springs to handle the more aggressive cam shaft. The thing is, if you get an engine out of the Explorer, you're already set up with the EFI components intake to make at least 300 to the wheels. You can save money instead of the carb setup because everything is already there. You're running an electric fuel pump and no mechanical fuel eccentric. So you're already half way there. You do need an ECU from a fox-body that's 89-93. MAF meter and probably 24-30lb injectors. You can get all of this for around 250 dollars give or take on Corral.net or something. This way you don't have to deal with carb problems such as altitude adjustments at the track, or just colder temperature starts, fuel economy and better efficiency.

      ThatGuyOnCoke The problem most people don't realize is that the standalone ECUs, to my knowledge, can't run direct injection yet along with the twin independent variable cam timing(TiVCT). There's more complexity than people know of. Once Ford Racing Performance Parts releases the control pack for the 3.5L EcoBoost, it will make that swap easy as cake(relatively speaking).

    Yay!!! Carburetor!! Manual transmission! WOOOOO!!
    For the ignition, two words: Pertronix Ignitor. I put one of those in my '68 Galaxie (and their accompanying Flame Thrower coil) and it's been a 100% reliable, zero maintenance setup for several years now. *Way* easier than one of those external MSD boxes (and cheaper, too). Just drops right into the distributor, right where the points and condenser used to be. Once you get everything lined up correctly, it's bulletproof.

    Good luck with the mods! I've always preferred sedans unless the coupe looked really cool. Sorry Fairmont.. I had an "86 Mercury Sable LS, 3.0 V-6. Built it to increase fuel mileage. On the cheep. Low restriction muffler, K&N air filter. I cut a functional NACA air scoop in the hood. Had front body work damage and I modified a Taurus grill and light assembly from a donor car. It was a piece of work! And it was my piece of work. The only one in the world! It got over 30 mpg on the highway and over 20 day to day! Made me happy and it was fun to drive!

Btw, I upgraded my foxbody from 3.27 to 3.73 gear ratio (8.8) and was very pleased with the results. First gear isn't tooo small and the rpm's on the highway were low enough at 70 that I can do long drives without issues. I was told 4.10's can get too annoying.

    don't forget about the roll center on the front suspension lower arms (probably upper as well if possible). since the rear end is a live axle you don't have to worry too much, just get an adjustable trac-bar to properly center the axle and keep it aligned properly. but the front lower ball joints need to be spaced an equal amount lower (with the overall drop in ride height.) to allow the control arms to articulate like they where initially designed.

    • @sparkeysmall
      @sparkeysmall 9 років тому

      forget about the rear tracbar as i just realized its a 4 link.... get adjustable arms. and independent suspension is definitely not the way to go.

    We had a Fairmont wagon that was our family car growing up. Absolutely ran it into the ground. I have really bad memories of the paint intermittently coming off and it being a nasty blue and primer camouflage. My brother accidentally shot out the two rear windows and they were replaced... with plywood. Everytime we popped the hood, something in the vacuum system got bypassed, and miraculously it still ran. Got rear ended at low speed by a Peterbilt. No damage to the car, mangled the chrome bumper on the Peterbilt.
    I've got nothing but respect for this car.
    In regard to making the computer work with a new engine, it's easier to satisfy an ok range condition than reprogram the ECU. I did this when I made my sleeper back in the 90's: A 1976 Ford Pinto with a V6 engine out of a wrecked LTD. Biggest issue was the springs I had to swap out for the heavier load in the engine bay from the previous and crappy 2.3 in it. I do not advocate doing this on an ECU that has valid systems that need to be measured, but you can generally get a computer to think something is attached and operational by feeding it a valid measurement voltage, easy to do with a few cents in resistors. Pulse measurements are a little trickier but nothing a 5 dollar microcontroller can't fix.

    For the brakes and in light of already going to a 5-lug setup, I would look at sourcing the parts fron an SN95 or NE Cobra. Very inexpensive upgrade for very good brakes. Not as flashy as the aftermarket stuff but will have no problem hauling that car down to a stop without drama. Plus OEM parts.

    Eric The Car Guy I blame you for starting my fascination with old cars. Thanks to you I have fallen in love with the 1964 Ford Falcon. Do you realize how hard it is to get a Ford Falcon? They aren't growing on trees sir! It sucks loving a car you can't have.

    My dream car ever since high school (yes, it was that long ago) was a 67 Bulllit green Mustang. After my son graduated from college the search commenced for a project car. Luckily for me, I came across one that was already built with ALL the goodies (and I do mean All the goodies) being sold by an eccentric car collector for a down right low price. I gave it one test drive and forked over the cash that day. I never had to do any work on it except usual maintenance and my high school dream was fulfilled. Back to your car. Thank goodness you have a two door and enough said about that. Congratulations on going the three pedal route as a cool car, sleeper or otherwise, is not cool IMO unless it has three pedals. One thing I have to comment on is the electric exhaust cutouts. If you are going to have tubular headers (full length preferably) then it will sound cool but if you keep the stock headers, those cut outs will probably sound really lame. I have heard others with stock headers and it reminds me of the ricers running coffee can mufflers. Good luck and looking forward to your progress.

    Yes Yes, YES! So glad you're not doing the ecoboost, what a headache that would be. I love the sleeper look and side exhaust ports. Manual steering is the way to go imho, but I've always had power brakes, so I can't speak to how manual will be. Re-engineering the brake system is really the only bit about this that scares me. Hopefully the work you're doing to fund this will not involve sponsored ad videos :) Looking forward to this project!

    EXCITING sounding Build!!! Even going Old School with a Carb and Manual Steering. That Rear Diff is not only open junk - but early Fairmonts had 6.75" GEARS!! Barely enough for the 88hp 6, or the 96hp Pinto 4. Yeah, 8.8 is a must!
    ..... Once I had to do a quick Axle swap in my Fox Mustang. This guy had a 7.5" out of his Fairmont, so I knew it would get me home.....
    I COULDN'T SHIFT OUT OF 3RD GEAR, because the Fairmont had 2.27 GEARS!! 😳😲
    I'll be "netflixing" this Series tonight. 😉

    Eric, sounds like you're pretty set on your build, however I want to offer up my 2 cents. 1) I noticed that your power steering pump is a Saginaw unit. That unit in itself is a very efficient unit in comparison to the pump Ford went with into the later models. In the Ford truck arena, it is a very hot commodity. If anything, you could send the pump off to have it rebuilt and keep some sort of power steering. They are very difficult to find at parts stores nowadays for Fords. 2) A Ford 3G alternator from mid to late 90s Fords is the most common upgrade on Fords. In stock form, they are 130 amps. You can get them for a dime a dozen.

    Love the idea of body-colored steelie wheels, but have you thought about a 'dog-dish' style hubcap instead of a polished chrome? A 70s Ford dog-dish style would be good camouflage on a sleeper like Oliver.

    Hey Eric,
    On the topic of exhausts, here in Australia we have Varex exhaust systems made by a company called xforce, they do exactly what you explained by having a switch on a key fob that adjusts a solenoid in the exhaust system to bypass the rear mufflers. I think this would suit your build and also save you from custom-fabricating it yourself!!
    Love your work too mate!

    Sounds interesting. I'd do the exhaust a bit different but it's your beast. One item that might help, pull the front sheet metal off and set it aside while you build. Keeps those annoying dents and dings from occurring during the build, and allows more access.

    The gauge cluster from a 79-86 Mustang will drop right into that dash. Some even came with that fake wood grain. Earlier ones had green backlight and later switched to red. Of course the all have the 85 mph speedo :) Then again, you could just get the bezel and supply your own gauges, since the stock ones are bimetallic. You can also get the clutch/brake pedal assembly from the same vintage Mustang.

    If you switch to manual steering, you should put skinnier tires up front. I loved the manual steering in my 82 Mustang, but it was a 4 banger with normal skinny kind of tires. It had non-power brakes too which gives great feel when driving the car, it really was fun driving that car.

    You will need a doner v8/4cyl mustang to cut the attachment points out of the engine compartment for the lower engine mounts to bolt to. It's not a hard swap to cut out and graft this part of the chassis. Torch'n'welder. 4 and v8 fox chassis use the exact mount locations in the engine compartment where as the in line 6 attachment point is farther forward. Did this in my sisters 1982 mustang when the 4cyl puked! Swapped an in line 6 into it with the manual 4 speed attached. As it was a manual transmission in the Mustang to begin with. That's another good thing about your swap the transmission mount needs to be swapped out for a v8 cross member to accommodate dual exhaust. Should be able to get that aftermarket. Good luck. I'll be watching this one!😆

    If you're losing the power steering a larger diameter steering wheel is a very important addition. And won't ruin the "sleeper" aspect of the build. Were I younger and flusher I'd like to build one very much like you're doing. I'm way past the age of a complete rebuild. And I ain't got Leno's money. I like.

    Borla ProXS may be good mufflers for you. They're very deep sounding but they don't produce a lot of noise outside of the vehicle. You could get a nice sound when cruising around town but only you could hear it. That way, it wouldn't make enough noise to spoil the surprise for when you open the cutouts
