That isolation box example is priceless. :D And yeah, with the guitar tone not working in the mix... it's known from studiowork that the guitar tone must be created in context of the mix. Never mind sounding shitty when soloed out.
Hey JTC! Thanks for watching and commenting. Really great interview. Interesting that Justin mentions Kirk’s performance at the Jeff Beck tribute though. I think the reason the crowd initially looks confused is that Kirk plays the whole solo from Train Kept Rolling a semitone out!! It’s pretty excruciating! That being said Kirk can’t play a show anywhere without being on someone’s iPhone! I’m glad all my f&ck ups don’t end up on UA-cam! ……not that anyone would care! 😂
Hey! I have to admit my personal heartbreak in coming to terms with Jeff's passing kept me from watching the tribute content, stupid, but that's the truth. After reading your comments I did go and give Train Kept a Rollin' a listen and I thought Kirk did a great job especially playing next Billy and Ron. That said, yes, the iPhone camera is both a blessing and a curse, and yes, having our good and bad moments out there for all the world to pull apart is definitely confronting! All that said, thanks for watching and taking the time to jump in on the comments - appreciated:)
It's interesting to hear it officially stated that Metallica have turned down their shows considerably on this tour. I haven't seen it in person, but I always felt it must be quieter than usual based on videos I've seen. Especially the ones up close to Lars taken from the front row. You can actually hear the acoustic sounds of his drums from, what must be, 15 feet away! I was thinking, if that had been in 1992-93 when I was first seeing them, you could've put your ear 3 inches from his snare drum and you'd still only hear the PA. I don't quite know what to think of that decision to turn down. I've been to a number of shows that I thought should've been louder, and they're always a letdown.
Hey Tyler - thanks for your message. My opinion, so there's that, but having seen Metallica at the Old Waldorf in 1983 and in the round, I'm personally not missing being blown out of the water by the volume. And trust me, you could DEFINITELY hear Lars' drums back in the day. Regardless, appreciate tour taking the time to watch and share your thoughts - both appreciated;)
@@DougDopplerMusic I could see that, having it been back in the club days. That’s awesome you saw them so early! Anyway, awesome video with Justin. It was very informative.
I think it's good that they are choosing not to give the kids and teenagers at their shows instant tinnitus (which I have developed over the years of listening to their awesome music).
I know absolutely nothing about sound. All I can say is this, I've seen Metallica 4 times and the first 3 they used amps live and it was LOUD AS HELL! The 4th time was Slane and the sound was shit. Wasn't loud at all and Lars bass drum didn't have that gut punch it used to 🤷🏻♂️
I remember reading 2004 I think and they tested Lars’ bass drum and yeah it was on another level to system of a downs drum sound who were playing before them
Hey Michael - thanks for watching and jumping into the convo. The first time I saw Metallica was at the Old Waldorf in 1983, and numerous times since then, with amps and with Fractals. For me, the sound has always been great, but I also know that ultimately the experience that people like yourself have is super important. And given your articulation about the bass drum, you know more than nothing. I will saw that certain venues are better for live sound, and most of the places the band plays these days were never designed with this purpose in mind. That said, feedback like yours matters, so thanks for sharing - appreciated:)
Health and safety laws have been brought in everywhere against high SPLs. Nothing to do with the backline. All stadium gigs are quieter now. I saw U2 at wembley in 1997 and couldn't hear for a day, saw them in 2019 and you could hold a conversation. Saying that, Metallica at download this year was pretty loud, could be heard like 10 miles away.
To me,,the downside to metal rock shows these days is the lower volume, it's stupid cause some pop act out now plays louder, lve seen country shows that's louder,,metal SO weak these days,, shame, shame, shame!
Hey Kenny, I have not seen Metallica on this tour, but the last time they were nice and loud. And while Def Leppard and Motely Crue may not be hard core Metal that show was pretty loud. Noting that I too LOVE it loud, kinda curious which Metal shows you thought were under-mixed in the volume department. Thanks for watching and thanks for sharing your thoughts - both appreciated:)
Thank you for all being so polite, this is so far out of my comfort zone.

Nice - congrats:)
I think there is a story about when Justin called Kirk’s Mom a washer woman? You should ask about that one…
before my time, But I believe that happened to a predecessor
I was staying out of the fray on that one. Thanks for answering that Justin:)
Axe fx 3 sucks. We can year the diferences in tone of those guitar thru the years.
do us a favor...hide kirks wah
Funniest reply so far 🤣😂🤣😂luv it
I know absolutely nothing about sound.
Slane castle?
Health and safety laws have been brought in everywhere against high SPLs. Nothing to do with the backline. All stadium gigs are quieter now. I saw U2 at wembley in 1997 and couldn't hear for a day, saw them in 2019 and you could hold a conversation. Saying that, Metallica at download this year was pretty loud, could be heard like 10 miles away.
Meathead. There it is then.
It's well known Kirk' sound is just crappy...great guitarist but his sound...Cool vid though!
Give it a few years and the tech with be an AI
I hope not!!!
