This is the fact the pro-appeasement side doesn’t recognize. If the US demands Taiwan reach an agreement, we would be asking Taiwan to abrogate its own democracy. That’s not going to happen.
Either self-determination is respected, or it isn’t.

And what does the other 90% want? Most people want status quo, not a fact that the "democratic" Taiwanese government respects.
When a population is deliberately kept ignorant and their opinions manipulated by the government, you can't get the true will of the people. The government is prohibiting online anti-independence speech. The Taiwanese have no clue about what kind of independence they would have after reunification. For example, they would be allowed to keep their military, all tax money would be spent on the island, etc. So your %'s mean nothing.

@@christineyoung8345 Typical authoritarian argument, "the people can't be trusted to vote in their own interests!".
You're also wrong by the way, some leaders of the KMT are very openly and publicly anti-independence, and the current government wants to maintain the status quo. It's mainland China that's pushing to change the island's status.
I'll also need a source on your claim that Taiwan would be allowed to maintain its own military after reunification. That would essentially make reunification meaningless.

  • @golagiswatchingyou2966
    @golagiswatchingyou2966 3 роки тому +29

50:48 that's not actually what deterrence is, deterrence is how you prevent war and attempt to cool threats down by not presenting to the enemy a potential for winning, the fact that the USA has not resolved some issues is not the fault of the USA but the regimes they are dealing with, many of these nations are/were totalitarian, ideologically driven and not or barely rational actors, you use deterrence to prevent boil up of the situation and then work or buy time to prevent escalation towards conflict, this is the realist way of dealing with potential of war, the alternative would be to invade which is what the USA did in Korea once it beaten back the North korean forces that tried to invade south korea, what was the result of that? China joining the war and fighting the USA directly which btw almost led to nuclear strikes on China which may have forced the USSR to do the same in defence of China or simply to feel justified in using nukes on another target in the future, deterrence is key to preventing wars.
if China invades Taiwan the USA has to respond in a way that prevents China from claiming victory, the best situation would be for the USA to act in such a way to make something like that not happen by for example putting nukes on Taiwan or allowing Taiwan to become a NATO member or simply daring to acknowledge Taiwan, the fact the USA does not do this makes war more likely not less, deterrence is key always has been, always will be to preventing wars, though sometimes they are still inevitable.

    All ICBM's are hypersonic!
He must be thinking if hypersonic missiles and glide vehicles.
Yes, they are hard to stop and they have the potential of doing a lot of damage. There is just the problem that the missiles are not hypersonic at sea level and glide vehicles are not precise at all. The problem is that when something moves at hypersonic speed in the atmosphere they are blind and deaf. That's why we lose contact to the space capsules when they return back to earth.
Hypersonic speeds in the atmosphere result in plasma formation that results in loss of signal.
Sure they can be used for atomic warheads that do not have to hit a specific point or even more difficult a moving target like an aircraft carrier.

Under CCP's regime, there is only one China, which is PRC (People's Republic of China). It is educated, or brainwashed, in the past 100 years in mainland China. ROC (Republic of China) Taiwan was never seen as a parallel political government equally. China also altered and brainwashed the world history within its domestic education, claiming it was Mao's CCP defeated Japan during WWII. In fact, it was Chiang Kai-shek's KMT government defended mainland China and defeated Japan, and was then ambushed by Mao's CCP right after, which forced Chiang Kai-shek led KMT government retreated to Taiwan as ROC Taiwan. ROC Taiwan was also one of the founding nations of UN. However, UN accepted CCP's PRC China years later, which put ROC Taiwan in a very bad spot internationally. Since then, ROC Taiwan developed and morphed as one of the most democratic and free nation in the world, without the taint of communism.

    > The CCP says they are going to attack the US carriers preemptively and then Taiwan.
    > The shepherds flock was threatened by the wolf, so the shepherd got a dog. The dogs’ teeth were not sharper or its bite more vicious than the wolf, but the wolf would rather go hungry than face the dog.
    > The free world cannot afford to let the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) take Taiwan. Taiwan is strategically located at the center of the first island chain. It would complete their control of the chain less Japan. It would become yet another island military base and give the CCP a deep-water Pacific port to conceal their nuclear subs threatening the U.S. Japan knows it would be next, if not targeted at the same time and after that the Philippines, Vietnam, Korea, Vladivostok and eventually the US. The CCP would use Taiwan to cut the trade routes and threaten free countries who do not yield to its’ will or relinquish territory and resources. Japan would be first. Appeasement “Peace in our time” did not work for Chamberlain it will not work now. [Maybe they should be called the NAZI party, except for the symbols it is hard to tell the difference.]
    > The CCP believes it is on the verge of global domination. The Quad Alliance (Australia, India, Japan, United States) and now others is the only organization that could stand up to the CCP. If the Quad+ does nothing other countries will say the Quad+ ether could not or would not stop the CCP and so they cannot. They would have to aqueous to all the CCPs demands and over time lose their sovereignty to the CCP. Eventually the CCP would become so powerful that the free world would have to do so too. The CCP would impose its propaganda/censorship/surveillance empire not just to Mongolia, Turkestan, Tibet, Hong Kong and now Taiwan, and later the rest of the world. Free speech would evaporate globally. Democracy would become a distant memory. Concentration camps would proliferate worldwide.
    > IT WILL START LIKE THIS: The CCP assumes the Quad+ alliance will help Taiwan. In their version of the NAZI “OPERATION SEA LION” the PLA (People’s Liberation Army) attacks the Quad+ carriers and air force bases with 100s of missiles each preemptively in the belief that a demoralized Quad+ will withdraw or be delayed leaving Taiwan defenseless. If they are wrong this is economic suicide. If wrong, at great cost the Quad+ destroys the PLA navy, the maritime militia, takes the military islands, and closes the Strait of Malacca to the CCP. The Quad+ maintains constant military and economic pressure on the CCPs” Military Industrial Complex” with standoff weapons and in time, more available and less expensive gravity, or glide bombs. The CCP has alienated every country on its border. Sum would see opportunity and attack China once the PLA has been weekend, for reasons of their own. With their massive numerical advantage invading mainland China is not an option. It would result in massive casualties, lots of collateral damage, risk a nuclear exchange and become a protracted war without further achievement. Regime change might be a little too ambitious. Inflicting casualties on the PLA would only make them stronger as they already have more people than their land will support (1.4 billion, four times the US population and four times the number of mouths to feed with the same amount of land). China is not self-sufficient in oil, coal, natural gas, food, water, iron ore, rare earth ore, agricultural seed, and other things. A war in China’s front yard would in and of itself stop all Chinese trade and maritime poaching operations. The Chinese economy would collapse and maybe their trading partners as well. You would think that would be enough to deter them and MAYBE IT HAS? A negotiated peace or even a cease fire would not work as the CCP would never honor any deal it made, rearm, and try again. The only thing that would stop the CCP is the inability to attack. Containment would be the order of the day, the decade or longer. There would be no exit strategy. Perpetual war? With all deference to Binkov’s Battlegrounds the object of the exercise would be to protect Taiwan, stop CCP “Lebensraum” (expansionism), keep the international sea lanes open, and eliminate the threat to and theft of resources from other countries, NOT the conquering of China. As tempting as regime change would be that is an extremely ambitious goal requiring an uprising of the Chinese people, who all have Stockholm Syndrome against their CCP masters.
    > The CCP is watching the Quad+ reorganize, reprioritize, reequip with new technology, build capability and alliances in the SCS. This might be enough to deter them. If not, maybe the US should dust off the 1941 “Lend-Lease Act” or Canada the “Mutual Aid Act”? What ever happened to “The Arsenal of Democracy”? Does the free world really need to charge Taiwan the full price for the military supplies and equipment they are buying? Should little Taiwan wildly overmatched bear the burden of defending freedom and democracy worldwide? If there is a war, there will be no winners only losers. An economic war or cold war is a lot less expensive and a lot less bloody. The only way to really win a war is not to fight one. The CCP has been fighting a cold war with the free world for the last 50 years. I wonder if an arms race might help bankrupt the CCP the same way it did the Soviet Union? Maybe the CCP thinks it can bankrupt the Quad or at least Taiwan?
    > The CCP cannot leave power gracefully. They have broken too many of their own laws and done too many horrendous things to the Chinese people. Right now, the CCP has Sovern immunity abroad and institutional immunity at home. They will destroy the Chinese people before they leave power.

When Chas Freeman shared his misunderstanding that China has been reluctant to form alliances (1:18;50), the whole talk fell apart. China has established an alliance with Pakistan, a terrorist nation. China (the CCP) is giving Pakistan warships to have an ally in controlling the Indian ocean. China has also pledged to give Pakistan missiles equipped with nuclear warheads. China is actively preparing for war, not merely building a military in general terms, and the war will be on multiple fronts, not only in the South-China Sea. The ugliest part of it all: China is gambling on radicalized Islamists being the ones to launch the first nuclear strike.

The U.S. strategic objective regarding Taiwan should be to preserve its political and economic autonomy, its dynamism as a free society, and U.S.-allied deterrence-without triggering a Chinese attack on Taiwan. In respect to China’s current red lines, we deduce that they are: no declaration of independence by Taiwan and “no external interference,” which we interpret to mean no U.S. troop deployments in Taiwan and no security pact between the United States and Taiwan. The world is watching and so are the Chinese People on both side of Taiwan Straits . The US must keep its Naval Presence and continue trading in the complete Indo-Pacific Region and keep the sea lanes open. Who ever fires the first shot losses the support of the nations of the world and they lose RESPECT and that will be their decline. Successful diplomacy is to a large degree situational and takes place under changing circumstances, which requires tactical adjustments; the Biden administration’s continuing order of the day regarding policy toward Taiwan should be prudent caution, but not timidity. China CCP knows to be the aggressive and attack Taiwan with no justification except domination of the people of Taiwan is Political Suicide as they would be attacking their own Chinese People and that would cause an Internal Revolution on the main land and loss of face RESPECT in the world .

The current US congress and administration is emboldening the Taiwan administration to be more and more hawkish regarding overt moves towards independence effectively changing the status quo. Taiwan is moving towards an open declaration of independence with the full expectation that US lives and treasure will spill on their behalf. There is no one willing in the US to rein in this idea as no one in the US is willing to seem weak against China. Furthermore, the Taiwan Relations Act allows arming Taiwan and there have been increased calls to increasingly arm them with more and more advanced weapons such as F35s and Patriot battery systems which could spark the initiation of a conflict or an armed embargo.
What most people fail to realize is that the Chinese consider Taiwan a vestige of the Great Power imperialism and militarization during the Century of Humiliation. This was a time of a loss of sovereignty when the sick man of Asia was carved up by France, US, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, etc. The US was involved concessions in Shanghai and Tianjin and inserted themselves into the Chinese civil war supporting the fascist KMT with weapons, supplies and training. Even when the KMT suffering heavy losses from the CCP and were surrounded within the major cities, the US air dropped weapons and supplies, but the KMT still lost. When the KMT fled to Taiwan, they did not flee to another country or invade another country, but instead fled to another section of China taking with them a large amount of the national treasury, gold, historical art and treasure. The US then sent the US Navy 7th Fleet to prevent a Taiwanese conquest and a finale to the civil war and threaten Mao with nuclear weapons if invasion occurred. The CCP never ruled Taiwan the same reason why the CCP never ruled Shanghai before the KMT was defeated in Shanghai or never ruled the largest island Hainan before the KMT was defeated in Hainan: they were a new party. The CCP never signed any end of the war and recently unclassified documents showed that the KMT was seeking US assistance to reinvade China up to the 70s.
The fact that the CCP was a ground military and was too weak to invade Taiwan that became a US protectorate by no way means the civil war ended when the KMT fled to Taiwan. The fact that Taiwan is a democracy now is irrelevant to the CCP as it was a fascist state in the past and the CCP still wanted to defeat the KMT.

@@rodgerhempfing2921 The HK situation was seen as a sign by Taiwan, but by no means reflects the conditions Taiwan will face. Deng offered Taiwan autonomy, democracy, their own military, non interference in trade etc, in exchange for Beijing representation in international bodies. Taiwan refused at that time. It is unclear whether Taiwan would get similar terms now, but the lack of negotiation means that nothing could be achieved.
Moreover, you should read more about the details on the ground regarding HK. This American Life did a piece that demonstrated HK protestor's xenophobic view of mainland Chinese and their open desire to kill police. Germany's DW did an interview with Joey Siu and she refused to condemn violence and could be seen as absolutely insane. The protests began benign, but later resorted to extreme violence that demonstrators would not be tolerated in the US. For example, HK used hundreds of Molotov's against police as well as arrows and killed a random bystanders with a pro-China view. In NYC during the Black Lives Matter protest, two lawyers threw a Molotov into an empty NYPD SUV and was arrested and sentenced to felonies. HK protests disrupted the city for months. Trump called in the National Guard after 2 weeks. All violence and disruption was justified as a protest for democracy. There were HK protestors openly demanding foreign military intervention waving Trump flags which would be considered treason. Imagine if BLM protestors waved Russian and Putin flags. Nevertheless, HK is still ruled by laws that differ from the mainland with HK Basic Law that enshrines certain personal freedoms. The protestors did not achieve their goals as their goals were insane (e.g. complete immunity after months of violence) and only accelerated Beijing's transition to authoritarianism with the National Security law and the Beijing's selection of candidates. Whereas a large percent of the population supported the initial protests, the violence and disruption to the city months later especially after Beijing retracted the extradition law resulted in only extremists continuing to support them.

The Ambassador is dead wrong and sees no further than his legacy. If he's not an unwitting fool, then he's gone native. He spent too much time in China and has lost his perspective. The Chinese are experts as they themselves say in managing barbarians. The diplomacy of the past and strategic ambiguity does not and will not work anymore nor should it simply because China is now in a position to take. Contrary to his claims of being a realist, the Ambassador shows his true idiocy by his remarks of mutual respect and cooperation. This kind of language used in conjunction with Taiwan is appeasement and a surrender of vital political, economic and military US interests. Should the US abandon Taiwan, the US will lose Asia and be permanently removed from it. China will not only gain a political victory at home and abroad but a military asset that will reinforce its plan to dominate the Western Pacific. With its region pacified, China will be free to roam abroad and intrude upon American interests elsewhere. Those who seek to avoid war will only fight a war later at a time and place not of their choosing with no friends while being greatly disadvantaged. People can stand hypocrites. People do not forgive losers. The abandonment of Taiwan will be America's Waterloo.
If the goal of these idiots and fools is to avoid nuclear war, what's there to stop China from doing whatever it wants conventionally? Are these idiots and fools willing to resort to nuclear war should the US lose conventionally to China? Because of America's failure to act now, the US could become the Russia of tomorrow. A whole lot of nukes to wave about but not much else.
After listening to the Q&A, this ambassador is even more infuriating. He talks nonstop about how the Chinese no longer believes or trusts the US anymore. About how the situation between the US and China is deteriorating. Ambassador! Consider the diplomacy of the past that was either initiated by China or agreed to by China as a ploy to buy time until China could establish a technological and economic foundation to challenge the US. They told the world their plans and the world did not listen. Hide and bide. Now, they no longer need to hide. So, they take. Are people that stupid to take on faith the words of an authoritarian let alone an authoritarian state? Whether through peaceful means or through force, Taiwan loses its democracy either way. So, why the insistence on the US being consistent with the One China policy and a diplomatic solution knowing full well the outcome of that decision? The US may have avoided war but in turn has condemned twenty million. In such a scenario, the people of the world will see it for what it is despite America's attempt to convince itself and the rest of the world otherwise. The US has only postponed a conflict with China but with a massive hit to morale at home and abroad with no credibility and a weaker position militarily in the Western Pacific. America and Americans had better get their shit together and get their asses on the job. Despite America's failings and there are many, the US is still the best country for its freedoms and persistence that the world be as well. No other country does it and has the power to do so. As humans come into the world kicking and screaming, the world too needs a cop on the beat to make the world a better place.

Yet this behaviour was reported on BBC and the CNN without any context. India has been supporting Dalai Lama and Tibetan separatist. Of course China would support Pakistan . It’s laughable that a county as backwards as India still think they are a influential country, while even among Taiwanese business community it’s common knowledge that Indians are opportunist, corrupt and untrustworthy who can call off any contract or agreement at anytime if there’s no contract law in places putting severe punishment onto breaking any contracts. Lol...Now I got it. Freeman was addressing to (or appeasing) a particular audience with mindset in line with CCP agenda. Fortunately Folks in DC, either from Trump admin or Biden admin, aren't as clueless as these people.
Talking about the strategic significance of Taiwan for American international affairs, one can't ignorantly overlook Taiwan's dominance of global semiconductor supply chains. Semiconductor chips to the 21th century is what oil to the 20th century. Unfortunately it would take at least 10 years at best, more likely DECADES for us to catch up from behind unless the US is determined to steal the technology and talents from Taiwan as China has been doing for years. Examining these speakers' background and training which obviously is lacking in technology and economics, I wonder if they have sufficient knowledge of what the real stakes are for American Indo-Pacific policies. Please hire someone with better understanding of the issues to conduct important analyses. Knowing Chinese isn't enough to convince knowledgeable audience.

    • @michaelguan820
      @michaelguan820 3 роки тому

Although TSMC's dominance in the global semiconductor supply chains should be concerning to US policymakers as a consideration of the costs of a war in the Taiwan Straits, it is extremely unlikely to play a pivotal factor in whether or not the Chinese Civil War will resume, since the most cutting-edge chips are more useful for consumer products than military hardware. Political and cultural issues are likely to play far more of a role in the decisionmaking of Chinese and Taiwanese leaders than the presence of semiconductor plants. The lack of significant semiconductor manufacturing in the US (and the decline of US manufacturing in general) certainly should be seen as a condemnation of past policymakers for their lack of foresight.
I should point out that semiconductors did appear on one of the slides that Goldstein had up at 17:30, if there wasn't as much time pressure I assume he would have mentioned it. It is certainly prudent to point out the intellectual blind spots (we all have 'em!) of public figures, but to dismiss them and their decades of experience because of a single issue they didn't devote as much time to is, I think, fairly ignorant.

The Taiwan issue is very simple, open the constitution of Taiwan Province of the Republic of China and take a look at the territorial scope stipulated in the constitution, including the Chinese mainland (People's Republic of China), Taiwan Province, Kinmen County and Matsu County in Fujian Province, and Mongolia! PROC and POC are two regimes competing for the legitimacy of ruling China. This game, China has been playing for more than 2,000 years, is a civil war, and no peace agreement has been concluded with it until now. It is still in a period of civil war. Taiwan Province is a province of the Republic of China and is also a province of the People's Republic of China. The two regimes have overlapping sovereignty and different governance powers! You always refer to Taiwan = the Republic of China, then parts of Fujian Province are also governed by the Republic of China, why don't you call Kinmen in Fujian Province the Republic of China? Your so-called democracy and freedom is to deny the Constitution of the Republic of China? Forcibly separate Taiwan Province of the Republic of China from the two regimes? BTW, I support Mexico's territorial claim to the United States for stealing his New Mexico state!🤗🤗🤗

I am a Goan Indian American & halfway thru this excellent presentation of China’s potential
Military strength, the following thoughts occurred to me.
    1) The Indian Armed Forces need to make this a compulsory viewing by its top military brass
    2) Prime Minister Narendra Modi & the Indian Government should have NO doubt that after Taiwan, India will be next on PLA China’s menu.
    3) The USA- irrespective of its military might will be NO match for China in the South China seas or the Taiwan Straits & therefore needs India as a partner & countermeasure to China at a second front in North India in the Himalayas where Chinese & Indian troops, (about 100,000) are facing each other eyeball to eyeball.
The US and India desperately need each other if they are to prevail against a determined China.
India’s 1.4 million people with a very disciplined army lacking up to date armaments, will be a great equalizer to 330 million Americans with superior armaments available to the Indian Armed Force, that can convince China not to disturb the Status quo, as nothing else can.
Like China- India should now be Proactive & Not reactive about its “One India Policy” with Chinas claims on Aksai Chin/ Galwan/ Kashmir/ Arunachal Pradesh etc in the Himalayas.
Why are Narendra Modi & the BJP so timid about intimidating the PLA when they don’t care a damn about the “One India Policy” but are so sensitive about the “One China Policy”?
A great “Thank You” to brave Nancy Pelosi from this Indian- American, for bringing forward a dangerous issue to US & Indias future. Hopefully this will generate a “ Mutual Defense Pact” between India & US to come to each other’s help in the event of China’s adventurism

I think your analysis that Beijing has no other options except military force and violence, ignores that kindness and friendship can change hearts and change politics. Beijing could begin to act responsibly and consider Taiwan's democracy and accomplishments since the civil war. The CCP could cease to be a bully and begin to think of other's concerns other than its own (South China Sea). The CCP could realize that it has reniged its promises to Hong Kong and change course restoring freedoms there. The CCP could dismantle the detention prisons in XinJiang and lossen its plan for cultural genocide. The CCP could then begin to show that its economic might can benefit ALL nations it deals with and not be a coercive weapon, such as it is using around the world now. This would show that the CCP is responsible and considerate. This might begin to change the Taiwanese people's (and the world's) view that peaceful reunification could be a possibility. The CCP has caused this dangerous situation to begin with, and is only using military force as justification while ignoring it has caused the problem in the first place by becoming the big bad bully that no one likes or wants to play with. With the CCP and Xi in power, it is unlikely that this will happen. Nevertheless, this option is still there and could prove more powerful and effective than military force. But, just because the CCP has gone down the road of war and force, doesn't mean we or the world should give in to the CCP. If we do, the CCP will take over as much of the world as they can. First Taiwan, then into the Pacific. If we don not stop the CCP in Taiwan, it will only embolden them and threaten Asia and the entire world. It's time to step up and do the work to prevent China from becoming the next warring state.

The real problem is with the CCP's movement away from liberalization and back to Maoist ways under Xi. They want Tiawan, the South China Sea and possibly other territories. Think of Hitler pre-WWII. 2、HongKong is beneficial to china by keeping with its capitalism market and regulation system and serving as a financial center for China rather than a political alien state where separatism can be fueled by foreign powers. As for Taiwan, it lacks the function like a financial center or a trade hub where certain distinct law and political system needs to be remained. For the sake of the ideological belief of the Taiwan residents, the political system might go through a gradually changing process rather than a drastic switch to the mainland system. And Taiwan, in any ways are better for the mainland to be kept as one of its own provinces/special administrative zones instead of out of control as a de-facto self governing region.

When you analyze the current status of China, you can't ignore the vulnerability inside the CCP. Once the PLA launches attack on Taiwan, the current regime in Beijing may also be toppled. You can't talk about China from military perspectives alone without taking into account many economic breaking points inside China once the PLA takes actions against Taiwan's current status quo.

If these kinds of people had had a say, and had convinced the USA to surrender right after the Pearl Harbor attack, because the other nations just had to negotiate with Imperial Japan, right now Imperial Japan would control the entire pacific. Perhaps that would have been better: Mao reportedly caused the death of 45 million Chinese. I wonder how many innocents' organs have been harvested, how many Hong Kong students have been disappeared (quietly murdered), etc., etc.
Now, they insist that opposing the CCP's dreams to take Taiwan, parts of Japan, parts of the Philippines, dominate them and all other nations in the pacific, dominate Africa, etc., should not be opposed. Have these persons received payment from the CCP to make these pronouncements? Even Benedict Arnold would have been shocked at their false claims that we should just surrender to the genocidal CCP, if he were alive.
