  • We know the used market is red hot at the moment and finding a brand new sled at a dealership right now is like winning the lottery. In this segment Luke and AJ put their heads together to determine the top 6 sleds they've evaluated that are at least 5 years old, still relevant and still just as good today as they were back then to show what prospective used sled buyers should be looking for.

      @@pavmentsurfer13 i get it luke, your partial to them. See here is the difference of doing and not doing research. Yes, everyone of them is an off the cuff answer. similar to a 5.4 3v ford motor, or their 6.0 diesel being junk. you can find an exception if you look hard enough, or if they aleady had their second or third motor. While the doo 800 also not very reliable, its doesn't gernade as bad as the polaris. The polaris will manage to destroy the block, cylinder (mono), and head. Leaving you with nothing for a core on a fresh one from a provider such as MCB. I would call them up and ask them their opinion of this motor, because i have. Any polaris or doo 800s makes them a lot of money. A gift that keeps on giving. I get countless messages asking if we have any used. It is the motor i wish i had more because they sell fast, and high buck. This is a stay in your lane topic. stick to the new stuff.

I know more than a few people with 800 skidoos that blew up. Things are so much better now. Seriously. My partner just picked up a 2001 Indy 700 RMK 136" w/mech reverse (in virtually perfect showroom condition) for $2500 w/tilting trailer and 2 spare tires, titles for both, and even cooler yet, the original MSO and documentation for the sled. AND it was originally purchased 21 years ago from a Polaris dealer right down the road from us.
      I think he made out better than my $1500 '05 RMK 700 151" which has definitely been ridden hard and put away wet, but it gets me out in the snow and I have fun.
      Would never be able to find a pair of newer sleds and a trailer for 4k.

    • @PartTimeYooper
      @PartTimeYooper 2 роки тому

      Problem with sleds that old is the cost to repair often exceeds what you paid for the sled. Bad track, blown motor, chaincase issues....for most budget buyers that sled is done and it can happen in 1 mile or 1000 miles

    • @gymkhanadog
      @gymkhanadog 2 роки тому

      @@PartTimeYooper IMO, do your due diligence. Look for a model that historically has few to no problems. Do you have 10k to start and perform maintenance, or do you have 2-5? And a trailer or deck (or build one).
      How much does an engine for a 2015 Polaris 600 or 800 cost? A Switchback 800 is what, 6-7k? I see short blocks are about 2-2.5k. A whole motor for 3k+. Rebuild for $1600+++. 800-1k for a track. Hefty investments and other sleds of the time wouldn't be largely off those costs.
      When I was shopping I commonly saw 2000-2005 era Polaris 700-800 RMKs for around 1500 or less depending on condition. Short block? 200 bucks. Whole engine? 400-500 at most. Rebuild, about the same. $200-400 for a track. Significant differences in the investment and maintenance if you want to get in to the sport and keep costs lower. My partner landed a virtually showroom condition 2000 Indy 700 RMK w/reverse, w/2 place tilting trailer (with titles) for $2500. Beat that with anything 15 years old or newer.

    My personal list for this criteria would likely look something like this:
    - 2011+ Apex EPS
    - Any of the Cat - Suzuki 800 with a chaincase (Hard on fuel and oil but not pistons with great performance when in the powerband👍)
    - First gen backcountry etec 800 (agree with the review up top - although I have seen multiple with engine issues at low mileage)
    - 1200 Doo in any trim.
    - Yamaha 1049 triple in any variant
    - 2015 and up polaris 800 H.o. which was worlds better than the engines which proceeded it since the last XCR triples.
    Enjoyed the video! Would love to see more content like this! 10 year old, 15 year old, lake racers, mountain sleds etc 🤘 My only gripe is that the 800 engines mentioned (especially the first gen polaris) are not, in my personal experience, high mile powerplants and therefore could be risky second hand buys.

    This was a great concept for a video. I liked the viewpoint of how sleds haven’t drastically changed in the past 10-15 years once they wen to a rider forward design. But, and this is a big BUT, the Dragon 800? Seriously? That sled is the biggest piece of garbage since the Polaris 900. It was wholly unreliable from both the basic engine architecture to the miserable 4 injector CFI system Polaris couldn’t make work. That POS spawned an entire aftermarket industry offering fix kits for that junk 800 motor. It also suffered from numerous electrical issues that left guys stranded on both the trail and in the mountains. Had you gone one year newer with the ‘11 Pro-Ride RMK, then yeah, much better sled, even though the 800 was still a turd it at least performed well enough that guys bought them anyway.
    There was even part of me wondering if this video was to spark controversy as you guys stated the Axys Switchback was good off trail. Bwahahaha! What part of exposed dragging linkage and snow clogging beaver tail screams “great off trail sled”?
