Exactly...they stick to the trail better and can pull off bump absorption physics that lighter machines can't. It ain't just the shocks or the suspension geometry.
This is probably one of my favourite segments. I love the spitballing of ideas where the weight could come from sled to sled. Within brands and even same motor chassis’s the weight difference boggles my mind
Here’s one that’ll make ya scratch your head also, that you guys overlooked. Look at how close the Yamaha sidewinder and the renegade 850xrs with smart shocks are, if you were to take away the power steering off of the sidewinder it would actually probably be lighter then 850xrs with smart shocks
Yeah, just didn't have our Lynx by the time we shot this. For sure we'll weigh it next season, but might even get it on the scale for an end-of-season rundown....
My guess is 45 pounds more, you have much beefier shocks, heavier duty skid with rail stiffeners, additional bracing all over the place. Heavy duty front and rear bumpers.
Ahhhh absolutely not!! Bro do you even ride!! Nothing better then a 2 stroke. I own all new sleds and all 5 are 2 strokes!! No turbos!! 850 baby!! Insane in the corners and holeshot! It Stands up and your gone!!!! 4 strokes are most deftly the most reliable of 2 strokes... but not near as fun!!!!!
No wonder I like my power steering Sidewinder better then everything else on the trail. It weights almost the same as XRS 850 renegade wet. 667 to 651. I personally like it more then my Polaris 850 and catalyst. But the cat is light. 561 wet is impressive.
Great video guys. We are all trying to hold on to this awful sled season ( I ride in the Madawaska area ) so this gives us some content for folks thinking of purchasing a new sled. I watch Snow Trax religiously and love your honesty, even when you don't give us Cat guys a lot of love, but I believe Cat is back in the game.
Weight means nothing unless you feel it. Rode a boost khaos for 3 days and I’m a Yamaha srx rider and the khaos literally drives well heavier and it’s prolly 100 pounds lighter. Weight is a myth unless it’s limiting you.
So cool to see. The Turbo Backcountry XRS with a full width front end will be cool to see the difference year over year and compared to the MXZ Comp. Now I want you to weigh a sled that most people ride in the configuration they ride in. Lets see what a Linq caddy of fuel, a full bag of "essinetials", ice scratchers, ski-wheels, ski-trackers, triple blade carbides, plastic tunnel cover, mirrors, windshield, GPS, Bumpers, aux lighting, knee pads. You know, the minimum kit to trail ride 100 miles, lol.
Nice work guys. One thing to note. The Backcountry Xrs cannot have shot and the 10.25 screen combined. So that is 577 lbs with the 10.25 screen is with the battery and electric starter! Impressive I think. Not sure why the freeride can have the 10.25 screen and shot but the BC can’t.
Hmmm Skidoo needs the competition package so it does not fold up in the bumps. Yes I remember the Doos bending bulkheads in the rough stuff-that did NOT bother Cats or Polaris's.
Facts, ski doos can’t handle my riding, broke the flying nun on my 05 sdi on a rock the size of a 12 pack, also my 2014 etec 800 on a very small pine tree. My cats and Polaris’s run trees and culverts over. I get scared when it happens till I’m back on the trail and they track straight. Mind you I don’t try hitting things but it does happen. I will never by a beer can sled again. Also there motors and electronics aren’t very good. Obviously all sleds have there issues.
Thanks guys, great info but I have a question: How is it possible that the 2-stroke XRS 850 is more than 15 lbs heavier than the 4-stroke 900 XRS Ace Turbo R?... And it is more than 35 lbs heavier than the Competition XRS with a Turbo and beefed up chassis? Are there gold bricks in the storage area? (That would explain the current MSRP)
Please continue to provide the wet weight. Because some of "heavier" riders do like a lighter sled. I have a SKi doo GSX SE 800 and a Renegade Adreanline 600. On long and rough riding days, I ride the 600 because I am not so tired and beat up on wooped out trails. Smooth trails and high miles, GSX SE with the air shock wins.
I truly appreciate you guys doing this work. The ready to ride weight is what a person really needs to know. The manufacture's published weights should only be used for ass wipe!
So I do believe smart shox do weight a lot, when I ordered my 2022 mach z I debated for a while if I wanted the Z ( of course i wanted the Z) or the renegade adrenaline 900R , the mach z had a dry weight of something like 554, the adrenaline was like 531ish if I remember right... it's cool seeing actually riding weights
Thank you for this info. It is sorely lacking as it is just as important (imo) as hp, torque, track, etc. One of my theories for some of the weight discrepancies is a combination of material thickness and alloy choices. I'm no weld and fabrication expert, but after ripping apart a few chassis and attempting welds, brazes, and etches on various sled metals I know that not all makes and models are built the same, even if they look dang close side by side.
Im not a serious rider, my newest sled is a 98' my oldest is a 88' none have reverse, all are air cooled. I cant imagine lifting any of these modern sleds to get them unstuck or spun around to go back the other way. Does that just not happen anymore?
You guys change your minds more times than my wife, Lol, you guys told us a few shows a go that the Ski Doo 850 Turbo was lighter than the 850 Polaris Turbo, now the polaris is really 20 plus lighter, count the extra fuel the Polaris carrying! What the deal! i have watched you guys for years,
Very cool - nobody cares about the dry weight, although you said you were going to talk about the manu advertised weight compared to the actual weight - maybe another video? Good call out on the giant fuel capacity differences between the Doo's and Poo's - that is a bit of a game equalizer.
I want to enter on Cross Country races I want a 600 CC Skidoo with the Competition Package.. with out he extra bracing and stronger skid , Skidoos won't hold up to hard riding..
Total weight is not just the only part of the story I remember when I had my Yamaha Nytro the rear end was very light and the front end was so heavy I could not pick the darn thing up. It’s where the weight is placed weight distribution is so important it would be interesting next time to get a 4 scale set up to on the front skis and set on the rear skid. And Show us the weight percentages very common in the car industry car driver always shows it. More work for AJ but it will really tell the story about where the weight is on that sidewinder . Have you ever held a 10 pound barbell out front of your chest and then pull that same weight close to you it’s night and day difference.
Trail Riding with both my Yamaha Attack and Skidoo 800 Renegade E-tech .. I can go farther on 10 gallons of gas than a Polaris or Arctic Cat two stroke can go on 12 gallons .of gas.
If you watched the video all the way through, they explain that they only weighed the sleds they have in their test fleet. Nobody has 858’s yet. If you take Cat at their word that the 858 will be lighter than the 600, with a standard shock package, the 858 should be around 520 wet.
I think total sled weight is an awesome measurement... Thanks for this segment. However, you could make an argument that where that weight is matters even more... 40lbs over the skis vs 40lbs spread out over the entire machine makes a difference.... This will take into account where the motor is mounted, does mounting the starting battery behind the seat vs under the hood matter, etc... might be interesting...?
The only thing I would change on this is the fuel. I would put 5-7 gallons in each only. Just because if one has 9 gallons and another had 10.5 gallons, for example, it changes the view on the real world weights
You had the Yamaha, but did not even mention the Thundercat. Almost the same. The Poo S4 is a joke, rented one for my son a few weeks ago and it could not keep up with a 440 two stroke, let alone my 23 Tcat or 24 Riot 9000. Actually out in the Snowy's, nobody could keep up. Was waxing Assults etc from the start.
The Sidewinder actually landed higher than I expected. Just imagine the wet weight of an Apex. Ugh. And the open admission that the engine was not designed for snowmobiles just proves Yamaha should have thrown in the towel many years ago. They were not even trying to really compete in this market
I can see the Sidewinder really going down in history as an all time great machine.
As long as you don't leave the trail. Boooooring.
There Will never be a better! A srx with power stearing stage 1 and 96 studds is like a F1😊
@@208SledHeadnaaah, an mtx is one of the most funn sleds to have. You litterly have more power then you can use😂
Also, not for nothing, A little extra weight on a comfy trail sled seems to make it ride better. Thinking Sidewinder here.
I agree!
As long as their smooth and not rough trails lol
Exactly...they stick to the trail better and can pull off bump absorption physics that lighter machines can't. It ain't just the shocks or the suspension geometry.
This is probably one of my favourite segments. I love the spitballing of ideas where the weight could come from sled to sled. Within brands and even same motor chassis’s the weight difference boggles my mind
Glad you enjoyed!
Yamaha isnt that heavy! Thank you!
Very real information in this era. Refreshing.
I’m so sad to see the sidewinders going away. I love those sleds.
And if you take away the skis and seat, There even more weight savings.😄😄😂
Would love to see Lynx next time. How much heavier are they compared to the equivalent Doo
Look up track weights it’s crazy how much weight differences there are
Personally I like the weight and stability of a 4 stroke up front on the trails.
Polaris S4 seems absurdly heavy compared to the NA 900 ACE.
You guys need to weigh some Lynx sleds.
That would be interesting to see the rave re compared to a mxz xrs 137 both 850 and even the 850 turbos now...
Yup, just didn't have our RAVE when we did this segment. Got it a few weeks after.
Can't believe the Polaris with the S4 4stroke twin is more weight than the Renny and Sidewinder
No wonder I like my power steering Sidewinder better then everything else on the trail. It weights almost the same as XRS 850 renegade wet. 667 to 651. I personally like it more then my Polaris 850 and catalyst. But the cat is light. 561 wet is impressive.

Yamaha Sidewinder..... Us Cat Guys always Knew you were not as Fat as the internet keyboard monkeys said. Long Live YamaCat !!!
Awesome video guys thanks. I also thought the sidewinder was much heavier. Especially with EPS.
Weight means nothing unless you feel it. Rode a boost khaos for 3 days and I’m a Yamaha srx rider and the khaos literally drives well heavier and it’s prolly 100 pounds lighter. Weight is a myth unless it’s limiting you.
Good job on this video. I appreciate your guys information and honesty. Love the sled videos I’m getting excited this winter riding

Keepin it real. Thanks guys.
Great video. I'm always following weight and fuel economy. Love my 600R
Hmmm Skidoo needs the competition package so it does not fold up in the bumps. Yes I remember the Doos bending bulkheads in the rough stuff-that did NOT bother Cats or Polaris's.

Doesn’t make sense - the you tube video had slightly different weights, less the strap… same people did the weights on you tube, confusing….
I've asked the same thing there is no way that can be true
I would gladly trade durability for weight anyday...your the pilot on this flight...driver abilities win 🏆 everytime
Nice work guys as always!!
Glad you enjoyed it!

LOVE this content! Thanks for conducting all that research!
Appreciate that!!

Awesome video guys !!
In my opinion yes there are more options in sleds but my ski doo xp 800r is comparabaly lighter sled haha
Thank you for this info. It is sorely lacking as it is just as important (imo) as hp, torque, track, etc.

Great job on this video guys!
Thanks so much!
It would be cool if you did a meet up viewer sled weigh way in.
AJ, put a set of USI Epic skis with SB deuces mounted at their widest position on that Sidewinder. You can drift it around curves. Super stable.
Nice video guy!
Appreciate it! Glad you enjoyed it.
Really enjoy you guys bringing this back.
you going to do this for dirt trax?
We might do some wet weights on DT as well. Something we'll look at as we get ourselves organized for the upcoming season.
The most important thing is cold air and plenty of snow
Very cool - nobody cares about the dry weight, although you said you were going to talk about the manu advertised weight compared to the actual weight - maybe another video?
Good call out on the giant fuel capacity differences between the Doo's and Poo's - that is a bit of a game equalizer.
Different tank sizes on the polaris machines
I'm scared to ask what a lynx 850 xterrain weighs after seeing what the renegade xrs weighed.
Yes but the Xterrain closer to the backcountry that weighed 75 pounds less
Is it rMotion vs cMotion for the Renegade vs Backcountry?
I want to enter on Cross Country races I want a 600 CC Skidoo with the Competition Package.. with out he extra bracing and stronger skid , Skidoos won't hold up to hard riding..

One thing will be nice is to compare the fuel consumption
Please talk about the more affordable sleds there getting out of purchase affordable for some of us,like the new 650sp Polaris
We actually covered the Indy SP in 2023 and have more coverage of it for 2025 as well as a value sled shootout segment. Stay tuned.
Put a lithium battery in the Polaris and lose another 10lbs.
Love this comparison. Ever thought of a comparison OEM sled problems in categories.. suspension, engine, etc. List out problems, recalls, etc. Thanks.
Trail Riding with both my Yamaha Attack and Skidoo 800 Renegade E-tech .. I can go farther on 10 gallons of gas than a Polaris or Arctic Cat two stroke can go on 12 gallons .of gas.
Like! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Any Expedition weights?
350 ish
Kg
Would be interesting to know if the Polaris weights are before or after the recalls. 😂
😁
Where's the list? Can you publish it? It'd be nice to look at instead of going back and forth through the video to compare.
Power stearing is not that heavy! Its Yamaha we talking about😊 high tech company.
If Im not all out in the blue, i think its 3 kg
what about the 858?
It's a 2025 and we only just got to ride it about a week and a half ago. Did not have one on-site this season.
If you watched the video all the way through, they explain that they only weighed the sleds they have in their test fleet. Nobody has 858’s yet. If you take Cat at their word that the 858 will be lighter than the 600, with a standard shock package, the 858 should be around 520 wet.
4 pounds lighter!
Our as in "owned"? Suprised that I did not see a Lynx
There were a few sleds that are absent only because at the time of the original weigh-in, we hadn't received our unit yet.
I think total sled weight is an awesome measurement... Thanks for this segment. However, you could make an argument that where that weight is matters even more... 40lbs over the skis vs 40lbs spread out over the entire machine makes a difference.... Why, who doesn’t fill up there sleds?
858?
Wasn't available for anyone when we shot this segment.
@@snowtrax thanks brother
So then that was a big crock of it wen skidoo said there was no tradeoff for the turbo and that is was not heavier!?
I hate ski doo 2 strokes, there factory warranty sucks🤣
You had the Yamaha, but did not even mention the Thundercat. Almost the same. The Poo S4 is a joke, rented one for my son a few weeks ago and it could not keep up with a 440 two stroke, let alone my 23 Tcat or 24 Riot 9000. Actually out in the Snowy's, nobody could keep up. Ski doo needs to get rid of the meth tank run em like Polaris just come with better clutch out the box
buncha trail sledders
The Sidewinder actually landed higher than I expected. Just imagine the wet weight of an Apex. Ugh. And the open admission that the engine was not designed for snowmobiles just proves Yamaha should have thrown in the towel many years ago. They were not even trying to really compete in this market
Yamahas just feel heavy. The handling and suspension makes it seem worse
