I had a laugh one year with my viper as it would never tell me I was doing over 90km/h when in reality the skidoo’s I was running with were well into triple digits…always said it was a good resale tactic hah.
Fair comparison, arctic cat marginally faster with marginally more horsepower. Exactly what I would expect. Curious if the Mach z being 2 inches lower would close that gap or not
How do you figure? Anyone who actually keeps up with the reality of performance of the new sleds knows the Sidewinder is faster than the Tcat due to better clutching efficiency, and supposedly the Mach Z has more power than the 900 turbo. This is a ridiculous comparison and shouldn't have been done. Btw I own a turbo Cat, so my allegiance to Doo is non existent.
@@Rehmer94 The Mach Z does NOT make more power than the 900 Turbo R. They are the SAME engine entirely. The Mach has launch control which would only help if you were fully studded on glare ice. Maybe the sidewinder would be 1MPH faster MAYBE. Id like to know why this comparison shouldnt have been done? Seems pretty fair to me.
@Luke Lester thanks for the reply. Early reports were that the Mach made more power than the 900t.... saying that it shouldn't be done may have been a bit obtuse.... as a Procross owner I would have liked to see the faster Sidewinder used..with being real world focused, a 200hp sled versus the 180hp sled seems meaningless unless they are both studded. I have yet to see an unstudded Thundercat in the States.
Every year in New York State they have a shoot out test with dyno testing and grass drag runs. The two categories are out of the box and dealer prepped. Here’s an excerpt from a recent test: Not-So-Twin Turbos The Turbo class included two sleds this year - an Arctic Cat ZR 9000 Thundercat and a Ski-Doo Renegade 900 ACE Turbo. They are marketed to different classes of riders and fall in different power categories, so this isn’t exactly a fair fight, but it’s interesting to see the numbers for their own merit. Both had 137-inch tracks with 1.25-inch lugs. On the Dyno-Tech dyno, the lake-racer oriented Thundercat spun up an even 200 hp, while the trail cruiser Renegade 900 ACE Turbo logged 160 - putting it more in line with the 800-850 class. Obviously the TCat came in with the highest speed. In 600 and 1000 feet. As I said, traction is the issue.
Both very nice and fast machines. Too bad you didn’t have the new SRX on hand anyway, I wanted to ask you guys as to why you do not cool the turbo down after high-speed runs isn’t that hard on the turbo bearings I always let my turbo cool down for at least 20 to 30 seconds after a hot run, anyway guys keep up the good work, always like to watch your videos
The mach z trapped higher speeds in the original shootout on grass earlier this year an tbh trap speeds usually tell the proof although sonmany variable on snow. Just shows which has more potential. The rest is putting the power to the snow
The suspension is so good now you sacrifice a few miles on the top end. I just love my mach z and in stock form spinning to 8000 rpm it is the most satisfying sled i have ever rode. I knew they would be close in stock form and AC earned that spot but not by a lot.
Sleds are slower on top speed compared to late 90s early 2000s sleds cause the ride height and design for comfort and handling older sleds were top end rockets but handled like crap and rode like lumber wagons top speed is the sacrifice
Interesting, I wonder how much conditions affect these results and how different GPS apps can be, because I can hit triple digits no problem on GPS on my Axys 800 Assault.
@@snowtrax and that's fair and I understand that, but I was also just on a random lake and totally stock. These big high horsepower sled's main purpose is to win across lakes. The Assault being a crossover has 2 objectives, trail and deep snow, and doing 2 things with one machine is always a compromise. So to me a crossover sled even nipping at the heels of a purpose built lake monster is either impressive for the crossover or a bit of a bummer for the lake draggers, or both.
Gotta consider the weight difference as well between 4 stroke and 2 stroke machines. A 5-10% weight difference greatly affects the weight to power ratio. I have an 18 Switchback XCR 800 myself and find myself I'm the same situation as you with wide open speed but do an aftermarket flash on these 4 stroke turbos (as they alluded to in the vid) and it's a whole nother ball game.
@@MasaCheez not being a knob, but so? That's not a good counterpoint in my opinion i guess. If I spent Thundercat money to beat everyone across the lake and it barely squeaked past a 800cc crossover (that if i wouldn't have gotten the electric start stickered for just under 10k in 2018) I'd be a little bummed. Spending comparable money on both, the Assault could still be close, I've seen guys posting pictures of gps reads on assaults a good ways into the triple digits. Not sure what power adders they have, but Thundercats starting at 10k more than my sled and it can barely beat me at the one thing it was built to do? And the crossovers from Cat, Polaris, and Doo right now all are super fun on trail and off trail as well. Thundercat, not so much. I know this is just my opinion, haha, i guess i just don't get the lake draggers that much unless like you said you really start adding power, then they start to for some people, but i prefer the versatility i have with my crossover
One thing I noticed about my sidewinder is it doesn't seem to just top out. I was on a long seasonal road hard pack groomed trail and just kept on it I know the speedo is not true but that's all I had to go on and it kept climbing over long distance it doesn't climb fast at the end but does keep going when I first started thought it was topped out at 112mph on the gage but I just kept in it and crouched like I was on a sport bike and it climbed all the way up to 125mph on the speedo before I had to slow for a curve. Just curious what your GPS would say if you had such a long straight to just keep going
That’s the proper way to compare any machine straight out of the box. 3 mph would not deter me one way or the other. But the Doo is a much nicer looking machine. Great 👍 Comparison fellas. 👍👍👍
I've got to 110 mph on my sidewinder 146 on the kobuk River, but it was -30, after it reached 105 it took a long time for it to reach 110, it was a long stretch on the river
They tried as hard as they could to make it appear they were close. Unfortunately the real world is different. Tcats can jump to 300hp with a tune and the Doos cant. Too bad.
Good review 👍 not taking side but if you where to put a similar windshield on the skidoo it might make a bit of difference on top end. It's to bad yous wasn't able to bring the mach and srx 👍
Did you note the rpm at top speeds? I got 102 (gps) on my Renegade turbo R as well but it was at 7700, (8000 max). Since the primary on this sled doesn't come with clickers I say add clickers and retest.
My old 07 apex gt did 109.3 mph with 2 different GPS's on a hard packed lake . Speedo was reading 126. Completely stock sled.. Different gearing I guess might help these 2 particular turbo sleds.
The little windshield on the Cat give an advantage on high speed cause the air dont hit the driver in chest , thats enough to slow you down by many mph , at those speed the air force is very high

I had a laugh one year with my viper as it would never tell me I was doing over 90km/h when in reality the skidoo’s I was running with were well into triple digits…always said it was a good resale tactic hah.
Think about mountain sleds spinning track all day long lol
Skidoos motto is "if you cant make it, fake it"
Actually the sled will have less miles than the odometer shows. By the sounds of it, about 5%.
Wild considering I had a 99' zr 600 that did 105 on radar, granted it was on ice but still 22 years later still not much faster.
Had an 01 zr 600 that pulled 105mph consistently with a 270lb rider
Fair comparison, arctic cat marginally faster with marginally more horsepower. Exactly what I would expect. Curious if the Mach z being 2 inches lower would close that gap or not
How do you figure? Anyone who actually keeps up with the reality of performance of the new sleds knows the Sidewinder is faster than the Tcat due to better clutching efficiency, and supposedly the Mach Z has more power than the 900 turbo. This is a ridiculous comparison and shouldn't have been done.
Btw I own a turbo Cat, so my allegiance to Doo is non existent.
@@Rehmer94 relax dude it’s called my opinion. You just provided yours. It’s ok to not agree. USA USA
@@jd69627 I asked a question. I'm not uncalm. Lol
My Garmin Nuvi works awesome. With the Topomaps it's still the best gps.
Nice! But which one is more reliable?
Every year in New York State they have a shoot out test with dyno testing and grass drag runs. The two categories are out of the box and dealer prepped.
Here’s an excerpt from a recent test:
Not-So-Twin Turbos
The Turbo class included two sleds this year - an Arctic Cat ZR 9000 Thundercat and a Ski-Doo Renegade 900 ACE Turbo.
On a hard concrete-like packed groomed trail, I think they'd both be capable of hitting 110 mph.
108 is what i have hit at 7700 rpm i belive its limited with 200 rpm more
on a 900 turbo ski doo
117 mph on my bone stock winder. On radar runs.
And I’m 320 lbs
Are you guys going to be at the Midwest ride at ERX race park in elk river Minnesota?
Nothing gets your hair standing on your arms when you hear these sleds ripping by on camera, even more so in person!
TURBO POLARIS
Would a fresh belt make any difference? Worn belt on my srx always seemed to cost 3-5 mph
The suspension is so good now you sacrifice a few miles on the top end. I just love my mach z and in stock form spinning to 8000 rpm it is the most satisfying sled i have ever rode. I knew they would be close in stock form and AC earned that spot but not by a lot.
Does skidoo still make the 1200 4-stroke?
A stock 1998 Thundercat produced speeds of 120MPH.
Sleds are slower on top speed compared to late 90s early 2000s sleds cause the ride height and design for comfort and handling older sleds were top end rockets but handled like crap and rode like lumber wagons top speed is the sacrifice
Snowtrax what was the fuel level on both sleds wonder if that would make a difference 1 gallon gas is about 6lbs
What was the Steady max RPM you had on the XRS?
Interesting, I wonder how much conditions affect these results and how different GPS apps can be, because I can hit triple digits no problem on GPS on my Axys 800 Assault.
Like they said, lane choice is going to affect the results in a race.
@@Polaris400tx I think that's where the aftermarket industry enters the chat.
Also mine is stock no studs
My 06 Apex in 1/3 mile 125.8 on the gun dreameter144
Fair enough.
That’s the proper way to compare any machine straight out of the box. 3 mph would not deter me one way or the other. But the Doo is a much nicer looking machine. Great 👍 Comparison fellas. 👍👍👍
nice review but would bin awsome to see the srx, its set up directly for what ur doin there, 1 inch track, lower stance, geared , n yamaha clutched
My 850 Renegade E Tec is all I need
I've got to 110 mph on my sidewinder 146 on the kobuk River, but it was -30, after it reached 105 it took a long time for it to reach 110, it was a long stretch on the river
2 great sleds ! but ill take the cat anyday!
I can't wait to see the Polaris boost!
Great video guys ,would have been great if Yamaha had dropped off the SRX for you.
Did the xrs feel much different than the Mach from when you drove it before?
They tried as hard as they could to make it appear they were close. Unfortunately the real world is different. Tcats can jump to 300hp with a tune and the Doos cant. Too bad.
Good review 👍 not taking side but if you where to put a similar windshield on the skidoo it might make a bit of difference on top end. It's to bad yous wasn't able to bring the mach and srx 👍
The doo looks so fresh compared to the cat.
It's a good looking sled.
I think they both look a bit dated, because they are.
Overall, I think the Cat looks better, but unfortunately for Cat, beauty is only skin deep.
Which one felt more stable at that speed.
Did you note the rpm at top speeds? I got 102 (gps) on my Renegade turbo R as well but it was at 7700, (8000 max). Since the primary on this sled doesn't come with clickers I say add clickers and retest.
I thought there would be a little more speed. But GPS don't lie!
Does Skidoo have any idea what a windshield is?
RIGHT?!?!
What lake are you guys on
Was that a 900cc BRP running against a 1000cc Arctic Cat?
My old 07 apex gt did 109.3 mph with 2 different GPS's on a hard packed lake . Speedo was reading 126. Completely stock sled.. Different gearing I guess might help these 2 particular turbo sleds.
The little windshield on the Cat give an advantage on high speed cause the air dont hit the driver in chest , thats enough to slow you down by many mph , at those speed the air force is very high
