  • A demonstration of the Nagy Castle Spinning Wheel. This is a 1981 model built in Wellington NZ. A classic sought after wheel. Now that this wheel is well oiled in it works great as you can see in the video. It spins and plies perfectly and has excellent adjustment on the scotch tension mechanism. It is missing the original orifice hook but one could easily be made and one that would fit into the original storage hole on the wheel. The whorl has an insert spacer that is not original to this wheel. This spacer is made from wood and works fine. Keep it oiled so the shaft that runs through it spins smoothly. The original leather bushings are still in excellent condition and now well oiled once again. The footman leather was replaced. I tried to tie it up with linen thread and it was just too sloppy so I put in a leather strap to hold up the treadle to the footman. Now it works much better. The wheel fits nicely in the corner and has 4 bobbins and 4 bobbin holders. The front two holders double as a lazy Kate for plying. It is only a single speed wheel but it does not over or under spin so it is easily worked and you have nice finished yarn.

Hi there, I have just got a I Nagy upright, and I’m a bit baffled in getting the tension right, it came without the spring, which I replaced, but when I put the cords in correct place it doesn’t seem to spin bobbin, however if I put the wheel cord on the bobbin part it works fine. Could you please help me, thanks

Drive band goes on the flyer whorl, not the bobbin. The string attached to the spring and adjuster knob goes around the bobbin with light tension. Once you have that set then you can adjust the tension of the bobbin to take up the thread without it being so tight it rips it out of your hands. Adjust slowly until you have the tension just light enough that when you allow the thread to be taken up it will take up the thread. You should be able to draw backwards on your thread as you are spinning and be able to pull the thread back without breaking. It is basically a scotch tension wheel. You could if you wanted set it up as a doube drive wheel but your whorls are limited to one speed. Best to leave it a scotch tension wheel. Ask questions if you are still having trouble and if you have suggestions for future videos please let me know.

You pronounce it Nodge (like dodge). It's a Hungarian word that means 'big'.

Well then, it's an improper term because it truly is not a BIG wheel.
