Hi Dean, i know this is an older post.... I watch all your videos. I've been soaping for about 6 years, but I still learn so much. I have found after shrinking, I sometimes get those hard bits usually on the corners. And yes they are sharp and scratch!! What I did was purchase a little $1.00 small nail clipper (used only for soaping) and snip the hard, pointy and sharp bits off. Works WONDERFUL! Hope this helps.!
wow Thank you so much. I am so glad I found your videos I almost gave up making my loafs of soap due to the fact of I was getting tired of fighting getting them in the wrappers. Not now I just wrapped a whole loaf in 5 minutes. thank you again and keep up the videos we love them.
Man, this is a really great tutorial!!! Thank you so much for sharing. I've been struggling with sealing the open end of the shrink bag. I never thought to use a heat sealer like that!!! And the wrapping outside is purely genius. I don't own a heat sealer yet, though. Wonder if I could use my food saver in a pinch...
Hey dean can you re-link the machine you have, the link doesn’t work anymore. Thank you! I bought a heat sealer but it will not cut the bag cleanly like yours is.
The tip about double wrapping over the label is genius. This is why I love your videos, very informative and I always come away inspired and having learnt something. Thank you :-)
Glad you like it. However I dont wrap my soaps like this anymore. I have my new way in a video next week. Along with a contest to win some molds so stay tuned. :)
Hi Dean, I wish I'd seen this about three hours ago! My next round of wrapping will look so much better thanks to this. BTW, if you put a damp towel under your cutting board it won't move around as much.
I know this was 7 years ago and this comment may not make a difference to the poster, but perhaps for other people seeing this now. First, very informative video. Thank you Dean. My only question is whether you couldn’t place the card, or rather, instead of the sticker on top of the plastic, make a card instead of the sticker and place the card inside and do the heat treatment? If that works, wouldn’t it save you another plastic wrap to avoid soiling the sticker, plus save you a good amount of steps in the process, I.e. no need to peel the sticker, place it carefully, and then apply another plastic wrap over the original wrap. Even if the inserted card costs more than the sticker, I imagine you could save money eliminating some steps, plus the additional wrap.
best tutorial I have watched so far. you are so awesome. Not sure I you would answer my question but, just wondering why wouldn't just put your label in the first shrink wrap. I realize it's sticky in the back, but maybe would not need to use the adhesive back? Just wondering. Thank you for all your great videos.
That's what I was thinking. Makes no sense to double wrap, and it's not cost effective. Just carefully place the label in the first bag with the soap, and don't peal the adhesive backing off.
Hi Dean! This is a great video. You have no idea how much I have learnt from your videos. If ever I come to Australia, would love to meet up. Thank you so much. Keep them coming.
I love you. ❤ U give me life. I was contemplating buying one of these on amazon. I put it in my cart but never bought. I think I will get it now. Thank you Dean.
I know I’m late but I’m new to soaping and this video was straight to the point and well explained. But I was wondering what setting is your heat gun on? I don’t want to melt the melt and pour soap
Thanks, Dean. I thought someone said you could seal Saran Wrap. I also purchased some soap where the wrapping is paper and not plastic and not shrieked. Thank goodness I can use my embossing heat gun. Those asking brands..Milwaukee and Embossing Arts are a few. You can get them from places like Michaels, Joann's, Hobby Lobby and Beverly's..basically arts and crafts type stores.
I like the idea of double bagging; especially for the clean label look. Are those bags a basic cellophane? They appear to be a bit thinner than what I have. I’m definitely going to get a heat gun and sealer; Less manual labor. Your video is super helpful. I can’t wait to make another batch of soaps with my new products. Thank you Dean
2 things: Tip that works for me: I seal my bag, snip a tiny corner off the end, and then I use the heat to shrink wrap. That way the air can get out, and the hole can't even be seen after shrinking. Secondly, my sealer smokes overtime I seal. Any ideas what's wrong? It's brand new... (Also, I use a chopstick along the sealer back and forth, and the plastic residue comes right off. I hope that's a helpful tip, but maybe it works because it's new.)
I stopped using this format due to the fact customers said they found it hard to get to the soap. So I reverted back to just a 100x150mm plastic bag with a rubber band on it.
Thank you so much for this tutorial I always wondered how this was done. Also thank you for the links in the description truly helpful.. great detailed video
Thanks Priscila, For me it stopped the smell from going though the wrapping. But I have heard of wrapping that still lets the smell though but I have not tried them myself.
Really great video, I hope to make some m&p soap soon, so this really helped me plan the packaging. I wondered if sealing the corners diagonally once you have sealed the main bag would help reduce how much is left when you shrink and get rid of the sharp plastic corners? Just a thought.
I used this way for a while but found that customers could not smell the soap. So I changed back to a 100x150mm plastic bag with a rubber band around the top and label on the front. Now customers can smell it.
Dean Wilson Thanks for the advice, I've seen the bagged method in some of your more recent videos, useful to get the heads up on that and I'll hopefully try that method. Now just need to make some soap to bag up! Thanks Dean!
Another great tutorial. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. If I just wanted to give my soaps as gifts and not sell them, do I still need to wrap them like that?
Thanks. You can wrap them anyway you like. But if your using melt and pour base, its best you seal them. You can also check out my other video on wrapping soaps below ua-cam.com/video/L9jo2it3eAQ/v-deo.html
I put a link in the video description. Its a generic brand mostly found on amazon and ebay. On setting level 7 it will melt the shrink wrap to cut into two.

I set it to 5 which is the highest but only to seal and cut the shrink bag. I think if the bag is thinner then you could do a 2-3. Trial and error is needed. By the time I go back to do that the bag has loosened up. Do you think if I double shrink that it will stop that. I saw one of your replies where you said you are now doing a bag with rubber band and label. No shrink wrapping? I usually have an opened soap on a dish for them to smell it. I'm ready to give up shrink wrapping since it's a lot of trouble to me.
I don't shrink wrap anymore. I had too many issues with it. The seal would break or the label would get wet etc. ua-cam.com/video/SJnC8DtdMVw/v-deo.html about 7 minus into this video and your see how I now label my soaps.
I've done as you suggested but for some reason my cellophane melts and the soaps show through. Could my heat gun be too hot and should I maybe use a blow dryer? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Yes, you need to be careful. Even with a craft heat gun putting it too close to the wrap can melt it - causing holes and the soap will just sweat though the hole. When I was doing this way I would wrap once, then put my label on, then wrap a 2nd time just to secure it. Once I move in this week and get setup with new videos I will show you how I wrap my new soaps.
Quick question. Since every soap is a different weight, when printing out Soap Labels, Do you have one set weight on the Labels that you put on each bar of Soap?
I set the weight at 100 grams on the label for every bar. In most cases it's 105-115 grams. It would be silly to make every label different. So a general label with 100grams should be fine.
Dean Wilson Makes sense to keep a set weight and then the actual bar being heavier. First time I'm doing labels for Soap and I was confused.com and it was 4.30am 😪
A question... given I started soap making to stop the use of single use plastic bottles and wrappings, seeing you wrap home made soap in pvc pretty much goes against everything I strive to do. I checked the link for said bags and found nothing to say they were even recyclable (not that it makes much difference as much of that which I recycle here in the UK has previously ended up in an illegal dump site in Malaysia according to recent research). So I’d like to steer clear from plastic in all forms. Can you advise some alternative that would stop soap from sweating or going mouldy? I’ve been using muslin cloth which unfortunately can be expensive. Even after seeing this video, I still love watching your soap making videos. 😊
Thanks for your comments. I understand your concerns about the recycling issues. However I do not have an alternative option for you at this time. Personal I have been making CP soap for over a year now and have not had a chance to made M&P base soaps. But saying that once I move next week I will be making M&P 90% of the time from now on. So I will look into other wrapping options for these soaps.
How do you choose the wrappings on your soap products. I've noticed that you do shrink & bags. I prefer the bags and like your labels system. I can't afford both. Is there another reason why you use both wrappings?
Southphxgirl Nava i have reverted back to using 1 plastic bag and label like my bath bomb labels. except the label is stuck on the bag and a rubber bsnd hold to to together. this way people can smell them at markets.
Shrink Wrap Bags ( 14cm x 20cm ) Link is in the video description to ebay australia. My bars are 70mm x 50mm x 1 inch thick. I used a craft heat gun. I have never tried a hair dryer before. But if you try, start from 30cm away otherwise it might be too hold and melt the soap.
I think it's best that each soap maker create their own labels. But if you need to get an idea. Here is a photo. sentinelsoap.com.au/products/large-121.jpg
Yes, I wrap the bottom of them and keep the top open. The place a label around it like my bath bombs with a rubber band. www.meltandpour.net/youtube/IMG_3615.JPG
Hi Dean, this is a really good idea on soap wrapping, I'll have to save up for these tools and give it a go! I was wondering though, with the heat gun, since the soap is a melt and pour, does the heat ever warp the design or melt the outer soap a little, smooshing it against the plastic?
Crayon Hobo I've done it with regular plastic wrap and a heat gun. Let your heat gun heat up first. Then move quickly. It won't mess up the design that way. If you leave it in one spot too long, that's when it will start to melt
I looked through many of the replies here. Didn’t see what size bags you buy from eBay. I found 100 gauge, 4x6 size and 100 gauge 6x9. Can you please tell me which is best. Thank you. And thanks so much for your wonderful videos!
I always purchased bigger then I though I might use. Just incase, because you can always cut the excess off but you cant add to the bag. Personally im not using this method anymore. I simply pop my soaps into a 100x150mm bag and tie it off with a white rubber band.
I dont think so. Never tried liquid soap before. I would think if it was liquid you need a bottle as this shrink wrap can create holes where the liquid will seep from.
Honestly said that "sometimes even i can't do it"👍 we get confidence with it, that it may happen not a big deal while shrink wrap❤️
Mr Wilson you are amazing thanks for sharing ❤
Thank you :)

Hi Dean, I wish I'd seen this about three hours ago! My next round of wrapping will look so much better thanks to this. BTW, if you put a damp towel under your cutting board it won't move around as much.

yeah a damp disposable rag (we have chux brand, not sure if that's an international thing) is what chefs use, stops any board movement.

this is so helpful. i have trying to heat seal, but i keep making holes ..
Yes, that does happen, try and use the heat gun in circles rather than direct heat. Start at 30 cm away then move closer until it starts to tighten.

Yes, if you like. That might work
excellent tutorial, thank you so much :) your soap looks amazing too

Thanks for the video. Could I use a hairdryer instead of a heat gun?
yes, but I suggest from a distance.

Hello sir , can we add Clay's to melt and pour soaps like french clay or melamine clays
Calmine clay

Thanks for this tutorial 🙏☺️
My pleasure 😊
So what other instrument can be used to smoothen the plastic or wrapper😮
Nothing that i know of, maybe a hair dryer but low settings.
I use a melt and pour goats milk soap. Would the heat from the heat gun melt the soap?
If you keep it on it, yes, but thats why you need to keep the gun moving in circles.
Hi Dean, another great video👍, do you have a video showing how to make your labels? Would love to see how to do 😊
Not really as everyone will be different. But for me, I use Photoshop and an Inkjet printer.

Crayon Hobo I've done it with regular plastic wrap and a heat gun. Let your heat gun heat up first. Then move quickly. It won't mess up the design that way. If you leave it in one spot too long, that's when it will start to melt
If you move the heat gun over the soap quickly it will not effect the soap. If you keep it in one spot then it might start melting the design.
Can I use this method for wrapping liquid soap?
I dont think so. Never tried liquid soap before. I would think if it was liquid you need a bottle as this shrink wrap can create holes where the liquid will seep from.
