Ford Escape - How to RECHARGE A/C by Yourself (2008-2012)

  • Step-by-step guide on recharging ac air condition on your Ford Escape. ( 2008 | 2009 | 2010 | 2011 | 2012 ). A/C recharge kit will cost you $20 - $30, and once you have it all you need for next car a/c recharge is a $5 can or two of a/c refrigerant.
    You don't have to pay expensive bill to a shop as you can add refrigerant and charge AC on your escape by yourself. First time it might take you a bit longer, but once you've done it, next summer it will take you less than 5 minutes.
    Be careful not to overfill the AC system, as that might damage A/C compressor. Always do it slowly and watch the PSI pressure. Once you are in the yellow/green zone the AC system is fully charged. Before starting recharging the A/C in your ford escape, always check owner's manual to see the charge capacity. If you don't have owner's manual, there should be a sticker under the hood with the A/C capacity. Releasing 1 can of A/C refrigerant will not overfill it.
    If you buy A/C Refrigerant with dye included, it will paint where it is leaking if there is a leak. In that case you can buy a can of A/C Stop Leak and fill the AC ford escape system with that. It will take care of small leaks. If there is a bigger leak you will have to visit a licensed mechanical shop.

    I don't think Tony Solar is being an A-hole, and he sure doesn't deserve to be attacked for his comments. What he said is right, it's important, and he wasn't being a dick about it. Thank you for your important contribution to this conversation, Tony Solar. Everything you stated is true, and if a person can afford it, they should have a professional mechanic do the job.
    And thank you, QuiteAlright for an excellent video. Our reality is that most folks can't afford to always do things the "proper" way. The cost of everything is eternally going up, but our pay is not. So many people either have to do it on the cheap, and accept the risks involved, or just get used to sweating a lot when you're driving. Living in humid Mississippi, the possibility of getting moisture in the system is what worries me, but I'm not at all confident that a mechanic I bring it to would do everything correctly. Maybe, but maybe not. I hate the thought of paying $125.00 to do what I can do myself for $20, IF the mechanic is just going to do it the same way I would (as in this video.) There's no way I would know. Anyway, I like your video because it's so easy to follow. If you have to DIY, this is how to get it done.
    As for me, at the moment I'm debating whether or not to try it myself. My car's a 2011 Escape. I've had it for about 6 months. The AC blows cool air, but not cold, so when it's real hot I stay pretty warm. I take this as a good sign, assuming(?) hoping (?) that it just needs recharging. Since a proper recharge would include vacuuming out the system, ridding the lines of any moisture, a person might consider having a professional mechanic do it every other time. That way if doing it yourself does put air or moisture in the system, it would be cleaned up the next time (if you keep your car for that long).

      Did you ever do it? I just did on my 08’ Mercury mariner hybrid and new life (cold a/c) has begun!! FL summers without a/c have indubitably caused many to go insane if not take them out completely.

    • @rosieclabeaux
      @rosieclabeaux Місяць тому

      Yes, I did. Like in Florida, gotta have ac living in Mississippi. It's really not difficult if you're careful and follow a few basic steps. It's a lot cheaper than having a mechanic do it. However, I probably have a slow leak and will have to recharge maybe every 2 years or so. What I used has a sealant in it, but next time I think I'll spend a little more money and get the higher quality refrigerant . Apparently there are two different types of sealant used in refrigerant. The cheaper type supposedly plugs pin holes, if their small. The more expensive refrigerant has a type of sealant that conditions the o rings and shaft seals in a way that stops leaks. The important thing here is that leaks in car air conditioners happen most frequently around your o-rings or shaft seals, and less frequently due to pin holes. Stay cool and stay sane, my friend. We're getting into hurricane season.

      @@QuiteAlright I will be recharging the refrigerant to my 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid as soon as the kit is delivered from Walmart. My question is how long did your A/C stay cool after you did it? The AC on my 2012 Escape, that I bought used a couple years ago stopped working about a year after I bought it. With the AC on, it only blows air on the fan's high speed.....and it isn't cold, but not really hot either. I'm hoping that it's just the Freon that needs replacing.....but that doesn't explain why the fan only blows when on High. Suggestions ? Thanks.

    • @jessicacoudare19
      @jessicacoudare19 2 роки тому +2

      You'll need to replace the blower motor resistor, it's pretty easy to do yourself! I just replaced mine, but now I'm here for this video because the a/c isn't as cold as it once was. All fan speeds are working again with the new resistor though!

    • @QuiteAlright
      @QuiteAlright  2 роки тому +1

      Yes you'll need to replace the blower motor resistor. That will fix the fan to work on all speeds. You can try recharging the AC and see how it is. If it doesnt blow colder then you have a leak somewhere in the system or the a/c compressor is bad

      You should definitely feel a cold air coming through by now. Do you hear A/C compressor engaging? If refrigerant level was high prior to charging than most likely that is not your issue. I would check the compressor itself and compressor fuses. Also if system is overcharged most likely compressor will not engage

      It is definitely better to take it to the Ford Dealership or a professional mechanical shop, have it properly flushed and re-charged. But that costs $. Is it worth doing it on an old Escape? Not so sure about it. A/C is gonna start leaking sooner or later anyways, A/C compressor might fail anyways or A/C condenser.
      Actually A/C shouldn't be charged anyways if there is no minor leaks. If it has to be charged every summer or so, that means there is a leak somewhere. So I still think it is better to re-charge it yourself for $20
