- After getting Audials to record Netflix videos, as well as other non-downloadable videos, I decided to record a battle against Giygas, whom I beat back in October using Vizzed Retro Game Room (Vizzed.com), and post it here for the enjoyment of the countless people who come to UA-cam time and time again just to see the final showdown against the iconic spectre of pure evil, pain, and anguish, Giygas - The Universal Cosmic Destroyer. Just felt like I should post my two cents on it. :P

Giygas isn't a fetus. Shigesato Itoi debunked the theory himself, because Giygas is actually Giegue from Earthbound Beginnings. The fetus theory comes from people who don't understand that Giegue and Giygas are the same person.
Giegue literally drove himself mad with power, becoming the Eldritch Abomination you see now. Also, the "fetus" shape is actually an unintended effect from how Earthbound's backgrounds are generated. Morseo, the Devil's Machine is meant to look more like a brain with a giant eyeball than anything.
As for the "going back in time" theory, Giygas actually travelled back to the past to escape being defeated by the Chosen Four. You're not fighting "Past Giygas" trying to "abort a demonic fetus in the center of Mother Earth." You're fighting Present Time Giygas who went back into the past himself to escape fate.
As for if he's truly evil, Giygas, when he was Giegue, wasn't evil at first, but when he went insane and became Giygas, he *was* truly evil, having become a font of evil and negative energy. It's safe to assume Giegue was gone when he became Giygas. Giegue just wanted his adopted parents back. After losing his mind, he only felt the need to destroy.
Ah. Sorry. I just really hate it when people mention that theory. My apologies.
This isn’t a final boss, this is nightmare fuel beyond the worst ones with an excessive dose of insanity applied everywhere. I love it.
Well. Nintendo hasn't stopped there.

Heard for years people talking about this game and how great it is and how it’s a cult classic and one of their favourite games ever but WOW do they not talk enough about how fascinating this final boss is

My favorite boss battle ever. Terrifying. Empowering. Mysterious. And all with a badass sound track that ranges from hard metal to strange noises, both creating an epic and unsettling atmosphere. This battle is PERFECT.

The fact that he says "another meal" means that Giygas HAS been feeding on something. Possibly meaning this isn't the only time he's turned the Devil's Machine off?

Is it weird that the time for giygas cant be doubled (6:66) bc...yeah...
Noticed that there is no enemy sprite after pokey turns off the devil's machine because giygas is literally all over the place. You're literally shooting the air around you essentially. That's why he's the background instead of an enemy sprite.
Flowey is a barbie doll compared to this.
GD Chaotic Ok... what?! First of all, Flowey takes little skill to defeat, just like Giygas. Giygas does *not* have any huge luck requirement to beat. Are you really biased to undertale or something?
GD Chaotic Yeah they’re difficult to dodge but you’ll still be alive. And if Giygas hits you strong, you just need to heal and keep praying. I can see what you mean by the luck but it’ll be very rare to actually be shut down by it. But here’s the point that’s proven: Giygas is even scarier because you can’t avoid him and his attacks can be devastating

What about Terraria's Moonlord? since he is basically Cthulhu who got peppered by the whole population of Dryads.
Here’s my theory. Giygas is not really a physical being you can either see or touch, rather he’s on a completely separate plain of existence. But he has telepathic abilities which is how he interacts with things. The freaky images you see in Earthbound like the swirling face and baby, that’s just an image he puts into people’s heads so that they can even have a vein idea that he’s near by. And he chooses that face because it’s to simply show he should not be taken lightly. And the “you can not grasp the true form of Giygas’ attack” means he simply launched a mental telepathic attack. It can not be seen, it can not be heard, unless you’re telepathic. But it can do severe damage to the victim’s mind. And the whole “pray to defeat him” is basically like a spirit bomb kinda. All the characters give Ness’ company the mental power to defend against Giygas and make him retreat to parts unknown.
As for the doorway to him and Ness’ face: first off, the gang is in a parallel world, the only world where Giygas can be contained. But Giygas has a very vague connection to the outside, so he can connect to 1 person’s mind at a time, which was Ness. So he presented Ness’ face as a mental image to basically say to them “this is your only warning. I’m more dangerous than anything you’ve ever encountered. Turn back now.” And then when Porky released Giygas, well, read above.
Adding to my theory, and the fact Giygas has a physical body in Earthbound Beginnings.
Giygas’ race simply naturally has the powers of telepathy just like a scorpion has naturally abilities to poison.
But Giygas himself was especially powerful, so powerful that after the loss of Maria, he went in a mental breakdown. A mental breakdown + telepathy = he basically destroyed his own physical body and his own sanity. So all that remained was just his vague spirit lying beyond a separate plain of existence as I said above. “Giygas is undefinable by human standards”, we’re talking about something that can’t be seen in the physical plain of existence and can only interact via imagery inside someone’s mind. So of course he’s undefinable by human standards, he can’t be defined if he can’t be seen.
A final boss that is so badass that the heroes have to break the Fourth Wall in order to defeat him. That alone is memorable.
That "thing" gave me nightmares as a kid! This is pure concentrated *horror!*

I know I’m years too late for this but, Giygas is actually two faced. The face we see is the raw hatred and madness from power. Flip it upside down, and you get the being that George and Maria raised. It’s disturbing. The more you fight, the more hatred and madness happens. Soon, you start to go mad too.

There's something to be said about the element of terror when gazing upon Giygas, a formerly sentient character (even being a cute little alien kitten in Mother 1), now a blood-red, contorted, screaming-in-eternal-anguish, undead-esque face of cosmic power, stretching and distorting horribly. Just that deeply unsettling mixture of pity and abject horror of realizing what has become of him - that this thing you're fighting is gruesome proof that he is gone, victim of a fate worse than death that you wouldn't wish for your worst enemy.

When i first heard about giygas, i thought that he was going to be creepy, but not make me have nightmares, to only be not really a final boss, but the scariest enemy i have ever seen

One of the best parts about Earthbound's final boss is that if you try showing someone the more lighthearted, casual parts of the rest of the game, then try explaining the final boss, it sounds like you're just making up some insane creepy-pasta for it. But you're not- this sudden Lovecraftian nightmare tone shift of a final boss is real and canon to the game, a fact i've always loved.

Idk why, but the final confrontation with Giygas always reminded me of the fight with the Master in Fallout (1997). The fact that you go to a location of mystery and dread where you might not come back from, only to be confronted by minions or a first confrontation. Later on being introduced to your twisted, psychotic antagonist, knowing that this is the end. Both Giygas and “The Master” represent what happens when someone or something gains too much power and loses their mind, Giygas literally destroying his own body and mind with his new found power and “The Master” leading an army and embodying the evil of the people he’s consumed. These bosses are both horrifying, but they are a helluva lot of fun to fight and even more interesting to research.

SkylarAFM He was a member of an alien race with powerful psychic powers. He wanted to become more powerful which caused his body and brain to shatter which is why he was in the Devil's Machine as that helped stabilize him

i've seen some gameplay from the beginning of the game, but that's it
Yami Dokusei Actually, that's almost spot on. By this time, Pokey/Porky was completely under Giygas's power which may, or may not, have led to his becoming evil

Giygas, he seems like he would be the ultimate pet. As long as you treat him carefully, you can destroy your worst enemies by having Giygas appear to them as his screaming face form. Giygas seems to be perfect for a pet, what do you guys think?

Emerl Gizoid well he kinda is. Mewtwo ressembles Giygas' (or Giegue in this case) alien form in Mother 1. Makes sense because Itoi's game studio was called Ape Inc. which is the future Creatures Inc one of the developers of Pokemon. There's food for thought for you.

Actually, the breathing in Giygas' lair before you reach the Devil's Machine is pretty reminiscent of the Barrier from Undertale, but this came first. Undertale's "Barrier" is "Giygas' Lair 2.0."
