You both though the the first characters you meet is going to be your pal, yet it turned they were the antagonist

I noticed a couple more things myself. Chara, the fallen human, seems to be very reminiscent of Giegue from EarthBound Beginnings. They both were alien to the world they found themselves in, but were raised by a different species who loved them as their own. Yet one day, they would meet with a tragic event that would make them emotionally unstable from then on. For Giegue, it was the death of his adoptive human mother, Maria. And Chara, it was sacrificing themselves to break the Barrier. Both Undertale and EarthBound Beginnings start with an exposition about events that happened long ago and then they jump to the present day, UT jumps to 201X and EB:B jumps to 198X. Makes it more familiar due to the similar intro music.
Well not exactly, 201X is the year Chara fell down, so Undertale has to take place after that
Well, you stated Mr. Saturn and Tem play the same role in their games but, Mr. Saturn plays a bigger role in earthbound while tem is more of a comic relief. (By the way, the reason Fallen Down uses the exact same soundfont as Earthbound is because it was originally from an Earthbound album made by Toby Fox.)

Actually, Asriel and Gigue have a shocking amount of similarities. What with the whole storyline of Gigue having a human brother and being raised by Mary is reminiscent of Chara being alien to the Dreemurr family, and upon losing his close loved one, both Gigue and Asriel loss their grip on their reality and are driven into insanity thus causing them to lose their forms and become metaphysical being which have an impact on the minds and emotions of the characters in the story and are indirect antagonists.

Good video despite a few spelling mistakes. Glad someone brought this up properly. One thing I have to note though is that Claus isn't really out seeking revenge. He was killed by the mecha drago and brought back to life as a chimera.
But the Chimera that killed him was the thing that he wanted to kill to get revenge for his dead mom.
I figured out the Mother Earth and Once Upon a time similarities because in Mother Earth you can hear a not being held then 2 higher ones that follow. If you play the first 3 notes for once upon a time there is just a long enough gap for you to add the 2 notes that play after the first held note.

You should look at the game Cave Story, it's another game Undertale obviously takes inspiration from, and there's a lot of similarities. Like for example the names "Cave Story" and "Undertale" have pretty much the same meaning, not to mention the fact that Asriel looks EXACTLY like the character Toroko from Cave Story. There's a lot more similarities and yet I have never once seen it brought up when people talk about Undertales inspiration

Kinda weird when Undertale fans won't accept the Mother 2/3 are the better games when the creator himself said that the game was inspired by the mother series and never tried to be better than it. I'm not saying that you shouldn't enjoy the game, I myself really like Undertale, but they act like it's the Holy Grail of gaming.

I’m very late to this video but I’d like to point out that undertale and mother 3 share a very similar song being the Love theme and His theme. Both songs are heard in the game in different songs throughout the games. It is one of the big motifs.

Another big inspiration for Undertale is probably Super Paper Mario for the Wii, since a lot of the characters are similar, and even some key visuals. Both games have, for example, a spider maid lady, a nerdy chameleon, and even floating colorful hearts as a major plot point. It has more similarities, also to Deltarune, but I don’t want to spoil too much. I recommend checking it out, the humor and heart is all there, while the gameplay is totally different.

Megalovania and Fallen Down actually have deeper connections to EarthBound, as Megalovania comes from a rom hack Toby Fox developed called Earthbound Halloween Hack, while Fallen Down is from an EarthBound tribute album called I Miss You.
This video shows that Undertale was inspired by EarthBound. It borrows its soundfont, has a few plot coincidences, a similar sense of humor, and some references to EarthBound. This doesn't present anything new, as Toby Fox has said EarthBound was a primary influence as well as the Mario RPG games. (I can also point some similarities to Super Paper Mario, for example.)
Yet people in the comment section are still saying Undertale is a blatant copy of EarthBound, which is so stupid. Undertale is a character-driven, plot-driven game that subverts the RPG genre. EarthBound is a traditional RPG that parodies American culture of the 90s and is simplistic in premise (boy goes on an adventure to save the world), not very story-driven, and it relies on witty dialogue from NPCs for its humor rather than fleshed out characters, with the except of a few.
Both are great games. But let's face it. EarthBound fans are simply pissy because some twelve year old looked at EarthBound and said "wow, the art looks like Undertale!" despite the fact Undertale-obsessed kids say that about everything, and are now trying to discredit the game in every way because 90% of the EarthBound fandom is full of elitists who think the Mother series are the most original and only good RPGs in existence. Even though the creator of EarthBound HIMSELF looked at Undertale and said it was a brilliant game. And I think he would know whether or not his own game was copied.
I'm starting to get really angry to see people insult Toby Fox as a person and say horrible things about him just because they're mad some kids compared their precious game to Undertale.
There's a slight difference between both games...people never said once that Earthbound is the GOAT, on the other hand...

personally i would've compared asriel not only claus but also Giegue from mother 1. I mean to defeat him you have to sing the lullaby that his ""mother"" Maria used to sing, making him feel bad for his actions, and some time after his defeat, because of all the power he had and the conflicting emotions towards the human race, his mind shatters and becomes the monstrosity named Giygas in Earthbound. I have played all Earthbound franchise (Mother 1, Mother 2, Mother 3) and yeah, life changing by rich story. I never play Undertale full game (was playing demo yet), and gameplay similar to Earthbound with unique mechanics.

Videos showing inspirations from even other midias in undertale would probably have as much content in it. UT truly feels like a celebration of JRPGs and Internet culture done in the most loving and original way possible, with you being able to enjoy it even without knowing the references or sources.

I think some parts of the plot of the Halloween Hack also were inspiration. It was originally going to have Jeff come back to life at the end from the souls of the other characters, but that was too cheesy. Just kinda sounds similar :)

I prefer Earthbound.
Not only was it more original, but it a few more design aspects just appeal to me more.
For instance, Earthbound balances out some of the adult themes to make the game more accessible to everyone; unlike Undertale where it felt explicitly more mature.
Along with that, the contemporary setting in Earthbound was much more refreshing to see in an RPG, it felt relatable while also offering moments of pure strangeness. Undertale borrows more of the tropes we see in RPGs, like it being in a fantasy world inhabited by monsters, however it turns it on its head a bit by making the monsters actually good guys. Which isn’t bad, I just prefer Earthbound’s approach.
Something I really didn’t like about Undertale’s mechanic of sparing enemies was that it was very shallow. It expects you to do things in a very clearcut way: spare all the enemies. You get punished with a grind and unfair bosses if you decide to kill everything.The game is basically telling you to play it a certain way and not your way, which limits player freedom and makes the whole moral system feel worthless. Wouldn’t it be better if the game let you figure out for yourself that killing the creatures is not ok.
Along with that, when you replay the game, odds are that it will waste a lot of your time with cutscenes. Sure they were funny maybe the first and second time, but when you replay the game a third time, I can’t see any reason why you would enjoy wasting your time like this. It ends up coming up becoming filler. I’m not gonna say Earthbound is completely blameless because it wastes your time too, but that game doesn’t encourage replaying it to experiencing something new, unlike Undertale.
If it’s any consolation, I think the characters are much more interesting in Undertale than in Earthbound for the most part. Although, characters like Porky, Giygas, and Everdred kinda make it a tougher call.
I just wished Undertale didn’t rely as much on random internet humor. It makes the game become more dated with time. While Earthbound had its fair share of random humor, it didn’t rely solely off of pop culture, making the game’s comedy feel timeless.
The story in Earthbound was practically nonexistent, just unite yourself with the powers of the Earth and defeat an alien. Unlike Earthbound, Undertale actually attempts to tell a bit of a story, but it really isn’t anything special. All the major parts of the story basically amount to character development for the monsters... or don’t help the monsters, it’s your choice, but not really. Besides that, it’s pretty basic. Get to the surface while also trying to help the monsters. However, I do like the reason why monsters are attacking you, you are the final human soul to break the barrier and although it doesn’t make sense, I can still appreciate the effort and they did some very creative things with it. The Asriel plot was also very interesting, but it never goes very deep with that because it’s not the primary point of the story.
The ending is satisfying and cliche, like a basic story usually is. I think Earthbound’s ending is much better because you get to experience the world that you saved rather than just seeing a cutscene.
Also, Mother 3 is way better than Undertale.
I don’t want to explain because of spoilers and anyone who has already played Mother 3 already knows why.

What makes a game really famous is related to the media's and people attentions. Undertale, for example, blew up when It launched. UA-camrs kept playing, memes were created, fanarts were made, etc. All these factors helps increasing popularity for anything. It was almost impossible to not know what Undertale is in this day and age if you check youtube regularly, specially if you like games.
While Earthbound, It sold poorly when It came out. Barely anybody knew It's existence in the 90's. Yet still, It managed to get some cult following, not the biggest one though. But It can get more popular if Nintendo do some marketing.
But I'll be honest: I like Earthbound this way. It's in a safe spot where is well known but not too known. When a game becomes too popular It becomes overrated (Which is Undertale's case, unfortunately), and this might be an annoyance for many people.
@@owndoing2055 thank you for answering my question and I think one of the reasons that made earthbound not so popular in my opinion is because it's Nintendo exclusive and only made for Japan or maybe because it's a series unlike undertale but you have given me a great answer thank you for replying me

@@trevorphilips2307 The Mother series is indeed something else in Japan. It's one of the most popular rpg's ever created there. And yes, I love Undertale, and I would have never known Earthbound if It wasn't for It as well. And because of that, Mother 3 became one of my all time favorite games ever.
Also, I don't mind games that are overrated. I just tend to play games that catches my eyes, or runs fine on my pc.
