OMC Cobra lower shift cable replacement

- Prior to this cable replacement, the symptoms were: I could shift between forward and neutral, but I could not shift into REVERSE. Upon inspection, I saw the whole cable casing was missing in the gimbal housing. This is a TWO-person job. My friend Andy came to help.
Thank you this answers many of my questions I didn't know I had but now I know what my problem has been and how I've wasted time and money trying to resolve my sticky gear shifting
Did you fix it yet?
@@chefgeir yep, shifts freely but now it's near impossible to find neutral unless I shut engine off
@@TimStClair-xd2sk Weird. I had no problem with that
@@TimStClair-xd2sk Check the throttle lever housing where the cables feed into inside the boat. There's 3 notches and a roller with a spring that pushes in those 3 notches (neutral forward reverse). That's how you're able to "feel" the notches. It's possible someone put it together and left out the roller or something along those lines
Awesome job and thank you for filming it! Now I'm fairly confident in fixing it on my own, well with a friend at least🤞. Thanks again🤙
Thanks! Good luck with yours!
Let us all know how it turns out with YOURS.
Gotta love that this is candid. Got some good tips out of it, thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Great vid. I'm a 25 yr merc Vp guy. But I don't wear flip flops. Good way to loose your toes. That's a 150 lb guilitteen

all you need to do to line up the drive shaft is turn the u joints with a screw driver until you feel it line up. I did the same as you guys did with the friggin plastic shift coupler at the pivot. I will take the shift cable loose again to replace it . I don't know why your shift lever was just flopping around before you connected the shift cable to it. Mine does not do that , I can feel it shift the lower unit when I move it up or down but it does not flop around like yours does. Wish I would have watched this BEFORE I started putting my 88 back together again, would have saved me about two hours of work.

Great video thank
Glad you enjoyed it
What about the bellows does anyone know of a good video for this model… I have the 5.8 cobra and needs bellows?
Sorry. I don't have a video on that.
My 88 omc is stuck in forward gear
Probably the same problem
I subscribed
Thanks!
Hopefully it's an upper cable and not this one. I do know the right engine is stuck in gear so it won't let that engine start with the key. I had to make a jump wire to cross the solenoid to start the engine until I get that cable changed.
Are you video recording it?
@@chefgeir haha no I'm terrible at remembering to do that. I start out just looking things over, the next thing I know it's done. Them I'm like crap I forgot to record that. True story.
My boat has a v8 and when I try to shift it sputters like it loses power the cable is frozen but it confused me when it would spotter and turn off when I had it in gear
Not really sure what's going on there, but it sounds like the shift interrupter micro switch is getting initiated at the wrong time.
I appreciate u replying to me so the cable was frozen and it caused my motor to turn off the reason is that the switch shuts off cylinders to shift since it can’t shift cuz the cable is frozen it just turns off I spoke to a marine mechanic that’s a friend I repalced it and it runs great hopefully this helps u in case u ever run into the same problem
@@redeemedmat2211 I am glad you figured it out!
@@redeemedmat2211 Why was the cable frozen though? Was that the lower shift cable (that runs out to the outdrive)?
Hey chef, I have a similar year model OMC cobra engine and outdrive. Where do you get all your parts from?
I buy all parts from Ebay
You want to come and help me change one on a 89 2950 command bridge. Twin engine. You couldn't drive a garden snake around those engines with a sledge hammer. Should be a fun job.
Wow! There is always something! Right?
@@chefgeir oh yeah, I have a bass boat I'm replacing the transom in, a glastron I have to pull the motor on and fix a broken starter bolt and a pontoon that actually doesn't need any mechanical work. Just a new radio lol. Always something. I'm trying to purchase a 24' Baja just for a project boat. It needs an engine interior redone and paint. But it will be worth big bucks after it's finished.
@@aaronwood3540 You got your hands full!
My 88 omc is stuck in forward gear
You probably have to do what I did here
