One of the most pleasant surprised I received with the 3.0 firmware update was the Acoustic Sim fx model which is a model of the Boss AC-2 Acoustic Simulator pedal. The Line 6 folks did a wonderful job in modeling this pedal and I must say the results are much better than I even expected. I was really enjoying using this to get some very usable acoustic tones. I really hope you enjoy the video and the preset which is available on CustomTone at the link below:

Getting the original manual from every pedal simulated is such a simple and great idea ! Excellent video
Really usable, especially for live gigging. Good enough for me to take only one (electric) guitar to stage and leave the acoustic at home.
I use this in church for my Telecaster middle position...sounds so smooth. Now I can easily switch from electric to acoustic. Awesome. Ty!!!
Thanks for this. This is the best sounding acoustic sim I have found. Sounds good on my strat, prs, and Ibanez with your settings
Another exceptionally insightful video of what quickly became one of my most favorite features of fw 3.0! Also, consider doing a followup vid of adding the 12 String Poly Block and the Stereo Widener for a mind blowing sound!!!
Agreed. For me, this has been my favorite part of the 3.0 upgrade.
God damn. That’s the nail in the coffin for me. I’m picking an HX up this weekend now.
I did it everyone. You should too.
Hey Jason, I liked the acoustic simulator video and it led me to trying out some free acoustic IR's with an electric guitar with a middle single coil pickup and a gain block or mic pre in front of it and I was really impressed! The simulator didn't do it for me though as I found it didn't have rhe sound I wanted. Cheers everybody!
Thanks for the review and tone Jason - much appreciated!
Hey mate, just wanna say i have recently acquired a helix lt and your videos have helped me heaps, keep up the good work! You have a new subscriber
I made a Hysteria patch using the AC Sim with an amp and IR. Nailed that Rockman tone.
you sure did Greg!
Great video Jason . This is something I've messed around with for years ,I never own the Boss , I only had the Behringer ripoff ,but with the right set up I got some pretty convincing acoustic sounds.
For the last 5 yrs or so I've been using my Variax JTV-89F and love the acoustic presets .The the Helix sometimes I just add a little comp and reverb play stereo though P.A. speakers and it sounds great .
I downloaded your Acoustic Sim patch and its really good with single coil pickups ,But when I plugged the Variax into it , wow ,it really bought it to life in a whole different way .
Very authentic sounding.
Love the 3.0 update ,keep up the good work.
This is just what I need. I've been fretting over how to arrange a song for live use, and this lets me jump between clean, distorted and acoustic in the same patch, using snapshots.
If I can be clever with my routing, I might be able to have a electric and acoustic sound together.
Sounds great Jason, thanks again for an excellent video. I think you have a very good ear and this helps in getting a really good acoustic tone quickly,
Thank you and my pleasure! I appreciate the kind words :-)
Thank you very much, very helpful video. I wasn’t sure where and/or how to start with this effect. Now I do :-)
Seen this video before but didn’t twig. Now separate snapshot with the amps and cabs turned off and boost some gain elsewhere in the chain. Cheers for the tips.
Thankyou again Jason! I am so glad to had a look at this I was very curious to what your opinion would be! (I have seen how fussy you are over acoustic tones :-)).
For me, I use to use the acoustic sim when I had a BOSS GT6, and it was one thing I missed hugely in the Helix, for live playing, where I am playing electric had need to go to an acoustic sound just for part of a song, where it is impractical to switch to my real acoustic (which I also use live).
None of the patches I found using IR's (to my ears) came close to what I was use to, so I ended up getting a piezo added to my electric guitar. Just my opinion of course. But now finally we have this! Even though I now have the piezo in my electric, I still welcome it.
I can now use this if using a guitar without the piezo, or if I need to switch real quick without fiddling with the pickup switch (mags to piezo) on my guitar. Also now I won't have to get a piezo added to every guitar I buy, if I want to use it live.
Really good tips from you re perhaps using eq to get some of the top end, though, personally I like a little bit if the "buzz" you get from the high (as long as it is not up too much).
Thanks once again! We are all so lucky to have such great videos this from you.
I made a preset the other day with a 3 sigma acoustic IR (mix around 30%) and it did improve things quite nicely.. oh and I also added a 12 string option with the 12 string block
Yea, wow, that is pretty nice. And like you I've never been impressed with acoustic sims on solid bodies..ever?! I have the Martin 3 Sigma pack and look fwd to playing around with this new pedal..
Excellent video Jason. I think you solved my first impression lack of enthusiasm. I took a quick shot at it and got and annoying high end buzz that some others have reported. I think it is likely an adjustment of controls issue
Been waiting for a vid like this. I play 75% of my shows as an acoustic solo or duo act and I've been flirting with the idea of using my tele. Appreciate ya
Great preset. Thanks so much. I added an IR from 3 sigma audio and this preset came to life with both my PRS Custom 24 and Schecter C6 Deluxe. Haven't tried it with my St. Blues to yet but I'm sure it'll be great. Thanks again.
Very nice! I'm really impressed with that. Being able to use 1 instrument for acoustic stuff and switch to a screaming for vengeance, balls to the wall, perpetual burn - all from your Floyd equipped favorite player is the reason why I bought the Helix. Getting better everyday! Excellent video from the "Tonemeister" as always! Keep doing the good stuff!!!!!!!🤘😁🤘
I'm loving the acoustic sim! I find it hard to write rhythms and chords on an electric, even with a clean tone. I sold my acoustic when I moved so to have one again (in a way), is fantastic.
thanks man! great asset for my collection.
This sim during the Beta testing rounds knocked me for an absolute 6 ( cricket terminology ). I had a full week on this and eventually had to pry myself away to get back to the midi. The thing is golden when really messed with. The work the polyphonic boys did on this is stunning. Setting up booth body and top and then sliding through multiple parameters with the Exp pedal yields amazing results during play, stuff you can’t do on the fly in hxedit. Whilst I’d never renounce my beloved Revstariax idea 💡 this thing had me hopping up and down like a madman as it is an amazing gateway to Variax, enough so that I’ll be looking to grab a normal Revstar finally.
Keep up the amazing vids Jason and I hope you push this idea way along in a version 2 video. You have an uncanny knack for explaining this stuff. See John Cordy’s take on it. It’d be so awesome to see you, he and Glenn DELAUNE collaborate in a video to Max this thing out.
If you set a switch to change mode from your chosen strum type to enhanced for solos works well
I'm using this preset with a ESP sc708 tuned drop G# Drop c# and honestly it sound really good even with the dual humfuckers in there. That's how good this Helix effect is. Very impressive stuff with this 3.0 update that they put out. All they have left to do for my taste is to add a Triple Rectifier sim in there.
Good shit Line 6 and great preset Jason.
you've made it even better. thank you for the preset
Great video, thanks for sharing! 🤘
I really like this effect, what a great tool. Just FYI I like it even better on my LP has lower output pickups really works great, I think better than my strat.
Keep in mind that your string gauge will also make a big difference in this type of effect. If you're using 8's, your sim will sound thinner and brittle. If you use 12's it will be fuller. Also, you'll get better results using the neck pickup.
Sounds beautiful! Wow, you're the man.
Jason, I have the honor of being your 700th thumbs up! I have soooo subscribed! No need to grab your preset... I just followed along and dialed in the same settings as you so clearly explained every detail, hitting {pause} a few times, as required. I have always been struggling with getting that acoustic sound from my electric, but thanks to your instruction and settings, I now can play acoustic in the intro and move over to electric as the song progresses. It's definitely easier to set up on the PC, as your instruction shows. My sincerest gratitude for taking the time to share your skills, insights, and knowledge with the HX Effects pedal!
many thanks - awesome as always, you never disappoint
That sounds awesome.
I too was pleasantly surprised, having tried an AC-2 in the past. I'm running it with a Taylor 814 IR from Noodler Guitars, on a parallel path and getting fantastic results... :-)
Yeah the only thing this sim has in common with the actual AC2 are the parameter names. This was built from the ground up taking the results from the polyphonic team who’ve just CRACKED it. The result is a phenomenal starting point and paired with IR’s really can fly. This doesn’t quite touch a SIM1 pedal or the Variax when stretched out but as a total guitar emulation freak this thing widdly widdled with an exp totally rocks. Great video this one, but go check out John Cordy and his exploration incorporating IR’s
Honestly I think I'm gonna use this in a duel amp idea with my clean tones
Love the videos. I use you as a resource for a lot of my tone dialing but I wish you’d play with the pod go a bit more and show dialing in tones with the limitations of the pod go
Great video. Thank you.
GOOD JOB Line6 and thank you for video!
I tried the jumbo with a les paul and sounded awesome
Great sounding acoustic sim. Perhaps thicker strings would make the top end less "brittle"?
Thanks Jason! Nice tone, usable! Have you tried the 12-string block yet? Would be nice to see your take on that one... I don't have a 12 in my stable, so mebbe this?
Hi Jason, great stuff. I’ve set up my helix to match your settings and it sounds great but in a live band outdoors setting I’m not getting enough volume. How do I get more volume? I have my guitar up full, helix volume knob up full and volume pedal at 100%. Also I downloaded the volume meter you suggested in a different video. How do I adjust the volume to match other presets? Which of the many bars should I focus on?
If you scroll to or select the final output (after the last block on the top row, or the bottom if you've got the top row feeding into the bottom row), you can boost the output db level (or reduce it, if you ever need to).
Thank you!
Believe it or not, I don't own a Acoustic Guitar yet in my Home Studio so this was very helpful when doing covers that required it. Thx Jason ( still can't beat a true Mic Up Acoustic >Nice Pre/Channel Strip... :) my $.02
You said you didn't want to use an IR for this video but I am wondering which IR you would choose if you were going to use one for your personal use.
Wow that sounds very nice! Would it be available in the Pod Go too?
Sounds great! Thanks. But why am I missing the acoustic sim on my helix LT? It's updated to 3.11
Looking in EQ section and it's not their
Thanks Rob :-) Make sure your HX Edit software is also updated to the latest version also, that should fix it!
@@JasonSadites thanks. That worked 😄🤟
@@robwhermanson awesome!
Hey Jason … Im curious about using this to basically have a 6 string acoustic guitar sound like a 12 string….
Si esto a alguien le suena a Guitarra acústica es porque nunca ha escuchado una. Buen vídeo.
Revisiting this..
great video, can't wait for a poly capo vid.
Hey Jason! I have a question:
Do you think this could work with a bass guitar as well?
I, IMO, still think it sounds like an electric guitar. I have the Boss pedal as well. My experience is with the sims is that it sounds best with an actual acoustic and I use it to fine tune the acoustics. I've event tried the sims with an electric that has an acoustic pickup in it (epi utlra 3) and the Line 6 JTV, but still sounded like an electric guitar. Again, my opinion
thank you jason
Mate you're really ripping through this new update. I haven't had mine out of the box in a year
wow.... sounds great
I have powercab, so I assume you’d use this in FRFR flat mode ?
Acoustic IR makes it 100% usable
Thinking that the piezo setting may be useful on the front end of a standard electric guitar preset to mimic the blending in of internal piezo pickup of something like Music man or Godin guitar with piezo. Not trying for full acoustic simulation but adding the flavor that the piezo adds on those solid body models. If that makes sense.
I have a PRS Custom with the Piezo in the bridge and that is exactly what this effect has done. Totally changed the way the guitar sounds through a regular amp. I usually run that piezo out to an acoustic amp, so this is a great option for a single amp set up.
Love the Screaming for Vengeance Album up there. Best Judas Priest Album in my opinion
Oh yeah, definitely my favorite Priest album too 🤘
Have you tried a split signal with acoustic sim on one side and a regular guitar amp on the other?
I haven't, but that could likely be an interesting sound for certain situations!
That's pretty damn good!!
Do you know if this will work on Pod Go? Thanks!
Do you have any thoughts on sending THIS signal to the amps RETURN to eliminate the preamp, or is there a preferred way to route an acoustic IR output from the Helix to an amp's RETURN?
there's an obnoxious click/crackle sound when switching between 2 snapshots if one has the acoustic sim on, and the other one has it off.
Yes!! I have the same problem.. Does making presets instead of snapshots fix it?
@@HenrikLien if you take a small break in your strumming while switching, there is no noise. I'm sure a/b path can also help it instead of bypassing the block.
@@accidentals_hacks Or making presets instead of snapshots
If that fixes it
Very useful 👍
Hi, for Variax Acoustics I'm using the preset of your video Line 6 Helix & Variax - Dialing In... Great Variax Acoustic Tones which works fine for me (in Band context) till now ;)
It would be great if you could create an update video for Variax acoustic by using the Sim as first in the chain :)
I can't get any clean/ambient tones just using the acoustic simulator. Everything still sounds like it has some gain.
In a band mix very very good
Thanks! ))
I really wish they added a mix parameter to this. I feel like the most likely usecase for me would be to use it as a blend in my ambient sounds and not as a standalone replacement for an accoustic. Maybe for eventgigs where you don't want to change guitars mid song, but that's really not a problem too often for me.
Put it on a parallel path using an Y split mixed to your preference?
Where in the signal chain would you put the acoustic IR? Fantastic sound tho, even without the IR
Hi, I just downloaded this patch today, and I put one right after the acoustic sim block personally and it sounded good to me there
Does your free CustomTone work on the HX Stomp?
I cant make my patch sound to like that. its weird it sounds like a 12 string electric.
No amp / cab?
wooowww...!!!! Thanks
This is great. Can you fake a bass guitar sound using your guitar in Helix? can you share the preset? thanks
I tried that in one of my songs and my sound and mix enginere friend didn't even notice it. lol
@@Eric-dd8bk can you share the preset? thanks
@@vejichan
I dunno how. I never share nor buy presets. I make my own.
Maybe I can email you one if you could tell me your email.
But it's simple.
Pretty much one of those new poly pitch blocks, a parametric EQ, and the bass amp of your choice.
I do it with my 7 strings and poly pitch/poly whammy + bass amp and sounds really close to a real bass. Lots of fun with the Stomp
MY HX Edit Software doesn't list the AC SIM, however, the unit has it. Has someone encountered this issue?
ua-cam.com/video/3aYfAklcgF8/v-deo.html
Update HX Edit...
Jason can you please do a video using a humbucker guitar and try to get a realistic acoustic sound out of it. Or at least do the best that you can with it.
This seems really convincing while strumming, but the pick on individual strings, especially the first and second, sounds plucky to me.
Does this only work with the Stomp or anything like that? Tried importing the present into HX Edit and it couldn't due to "unrecognized models." I am on the latest version, updated it just before downloading the preset.
I got the same problem. It seems like the Acoustic Sim is missing on my Helix LT (3.01)
Well. I realised I hadn't updated HX edit from 2.92 to 3.0. Fixed
@@bloodlustuponme Same here. I thought they updated simultaneously but they don't. I don't know why they haven't implemented that rather than making you redownload the software each time. And why in HX Edit, it shows you the helix version and not the software version. But whatever, it works at least.
Very impressive video AND tone but I'm confused. I didn't see, or hear mention of, speaker choice and you're not using an IR in the chain either. I certainly may be completely wrong but I thought you HAD to have something in the chain before going into an FRFR or to FOH or the sound is horrible. It's certainly been my personal experience as well. What am I missing
You need a cabinet IR if you're running through an amp block, but as Jason is demonstrating the acoustic simulator here and not using an amp block, it's not needed. That said it would be interesting to hear with an acoustic IR which are primarily pared with piezo pickups to mimic the sound of a mic'd acoustic. As the acoustic simulator delivers a similar sound to that of a piezo pickup it might help create a more natural tone.
Not true. I don't use an amp/cab/IR block for my clean tones at all. Sounds great and saves blocks/DSP
@@stevendibella4458 Usually if you use an amp block it will sound horrible without a speaker IR, but yes if you're not using an amp block either you can still achieve a decent clean tone without either. I've seen a few jazz players plug straight into the PA and still sound great.
How about a 12 string acoustic simulator?
nice
This will not load on my Helix floor
Not adding an amp to the chain?
@@kenthhamner2641 agree. It’s just that the original boss pedal had two outputs; one for amp and one for PA. Not sure what Line 6 has modeled.
From what the Line 6 guys have been saying, it wasn't really "modeled" at all. They took the concept and created something on their own. Besides, I haven't used an amp model for cleans for awhile now and the sound great. I can only imagine this pedal benefits from not being colored by an "amp" even more so...
They pretty much eliminated 9 and 8 string guitars atta the market with this update.
And pretty much all bassists. lol
I recorded one song without a bassist but with a bass. I pretty much used the pitch shifter and down tuned my strat an octave.
And I made it sound like a legit bass with a parametric EQ. And my sound enginere and a producer friend couldn't even tell. lol
YOU WILL NEVER REPLACE US!
@@DarrenSMusic
At least in live situation, yes.
Yeah, I'd like to hear that. Doesn't sound like a great sound engineer if they can't tell the difference.
And the 6 ppl who disliked this work for Boss. 😂😂😂
Thank you!
