- What if Thrawn joined the Rebel Alliance? We'll discuss the possibilities on today's Star Wars lore video!
On today's Star Wars Legends lore video, I put forward my theory on what would happen if Grand Admiral Thrawn joined left the Empire and joined the Rebel Alliance. Would the galaxy's most famous chiss win the Galactic Civil War for the Rebels, or would he be more of a burden?

You do realise the Rebellion won against all those grand Admirals right? If the had Thrawn the Empire would have lost even worse. Since no rebellion commander is on par with Thrawn. CIS droids would have reduced rebellion casualties since they could be used as distractions or a variety of things that would be best used (at least morally) with droids.
Aaron J. Atherton Yes they did defeat many Grand Admirals, but Thrawn was winning the battle of Billbringy, but he was killed he would have crushed the new Republic if he survived the assasination.
The most competent military commander in Star Wars teamed up with the luckiest military force in Star Wars...

The thing about the subordinate that Thrawn executed. While the person did fail him, the reason he was executed was because said subordinate tried to place blame on someone below him.
Later on, someone else had a very similar failure, but he fessed up, explained what he was trying to do and when the failure ultimately occurred, and instead of being executed, he was promoted by Thrawn on the spot.
Sokolniki also the gunner didnt just admit he failed and behave honroably but tried a clever solution to the problem that thrawn approved of
Jackson, didn't Thrawn promote him to become a training instructor?
@Grubnar:As much as I remember he was ordered to find a solution for the tactic that was used.
I recently read The Last Command again, where this event occurred.
Skywalker escaped from the ISD Chimera by using a tactic called the "covert shroud gambit," in which the freighter which held Skywalker's X-Wing self-destructed, which emitted particles that scrambled the Chimera's tractor beams, allowing Skywalker in his X-Wing to escape to hyperspace before he could be captured. This apparently had been used before and at that point there was no solution to it. The ensign in question, named Mithel, tried to alter the tractor beam to overcome the particles but was unsuccessful. When Ensign Mithel told Thrawn what happened and what he did, Thrawn was extremely impressed over the quick, innovative thinking of the ensign and promoted him to Lieutenant, giving his first assignment that of trying to figure out how to break a covert shroud.
I cannot remember if it happened in the novel Spectre of the Past or Vision of the Future (which were sequel novels written by Zahn that was set around 20 years after the original Zahn trilogy), but Lando Calrissian tried to escape a Star Destroyer that was manned by "Thrawn" by using the same method. However, apparently Mithel (who was now a Major, I believe) had solved the puzzle, the covert shroud gambit failed, and Calrissian was captured.
Those books were masterpieces...
Lonnie Craig Eventually, he found a method to break the Covert Shroud.

If Thrawn had joined the Rebellion none of the new trilogy would have happen. The rebels would have finally had a competent leader.
None of the Ditzney crap thrillogy did happen. As far as I am concerned. 😊
Actually nothing past the first movie would have happened as Thrawn would just be destroying everything
I think you mean Resistance
@@2bkeane618 Wrong
*cough cough* harm bel iblis *cough cough*
The rebels would have become the new republic much quicker and I believe that the first order would have been a little problem if thrawn was still with them 30 years later
Thrawn probably would have taken steps to prepare for war the moment he learned of the First Order's military buildup, with or without the Senate's approval. Even if he didn't strike first, he would have likely seen to it the the Republic Navy was in position and prepared to strike back swiftly against an attack. No doubt he would have coordinated his efforts with Leia and her Resistance to better accomplish this, taking full advantage of any intel they acquired on the First Order.
Pretty big if. He would have vociferously opposed Mon Mothma's massive military draw-down, and that might have put him in even worse odor with the new Senate than Leia was. Of course, it might have been possible that he could have convinced people to maintain a more powerful military, as well. In which case, there might be far less need for a Resistance, and the forces opposing the First Order would have far better ships - and a lot more of them.
If not, well... we all know how well our Blue Boi do when operating a small force against a much larger one.
@@et3inuyasha Thrawn is a pretty charismatic individual and has learnt to play some politics by the time the Empire crumbles. So he would be fine.
Thrawn joining the Rebellion. A nightmare to all Imperials... think of how many officers in the Empire would feel if they hear Thrawn's name or voice...it would already caused a stir in the Empire and maybe cause them to lose moral. If a grand Admarial defected, then it shows some weakness in the Empire.

well as stated, thrawn wasn't a fan of big bulky death machines. and since the rebels didn't use many of those, the empire's large ships would be shredded

Thrawn would likely not fit in well with the Alliance due to his realistic outlook and pragmatism. It's not that the rebels wouldn't appreciate him but they'd probably not find their direction ethical. I suspect Thrawn would strongly suggest a form of reorganization that would heavily militarize and discipline the Rebels. I think many who joined the rebellion have this romantic notion of heroically restoring the republic, and would find Thrawn's command extremely heavy to deal with. Ultimately I imagine the more professional amongst the rebels would flock to him while the romantics would hate him and the extremists would despise his professionalism. A big question: Can Mon Mothma control him? If she could or not, how would that play out.
I think that’s very realistic but I do believe it would bring in more professionalism to the rebellion
Absolutely not - Mon Mothma's actions as head of state of the New Republic were disastrous and mostly ignored all the lessons she should've learned when the old Republic became the Empire - and Thrawn would be too smart to not see it.
He could change them in the process, and they could change him.
Keep in mind, he DOES understand those concepts. He is pragmatic in his methods, but he does understand the value of those concepts.
Thrawn will always be awesome
Thrawn's one weakness I noticed in the Trawn Trilogy is a product of his strengths. He makes extremely accurate and precise deductions based on very limited information. However, in the very rare instance where he guesses wrong, probably due to missing info, that error has a tendancy to be compounded in later deductions without him realizing it.
"hey I think thrawns alive again"
*New Republic shits itself*
Damn i love thrawn even more now. You have just made him my joint 1st favourite character
darth vader would be a bit different.
Basically Palpatine gets wrecked
Edit: I got liked!!!
Well then don't use CIS droids, isn't it simple enough? If Thrawn were to join the rebels, he should be given a choice.
You know you have a good character when no matter what he does he's still a badass.
Also: Thrawn was also rather highly regarded by his troops, I think he could have inspired quite a lot of defection.
And justifiably so. The guy was an incredibly gifted commander, and he actively encouraged creativity and ingenuity, and discouraged just mindlessly following orders. If you could justify your actions, even if your tactic failed, he would more than likely promote you to reward you for at least making an attempt to do something the enemy wouldn't expect (one of the best ways you can win a fight: catch your opponent off-guard).
It's quite amazing that old canon Thrawn and new canon Thrawn are written by the same guy, Timothy Zahn you wonderful human being....quite the opposite of our Grand Admiral.
Thrawn would make a mean Genji main....a mean Overwatch player in general....maybe the best.....this is an amazing idea.
If Thrawn joined the rebels he would taken the First Order as a serious threat like Leia and put a stop to them before the destruction of the new republic.
Nah nah there would be no first order because they would fear thrawn
Thrawn would act in what is best for the Chiss, and the galaxy at large. If he felt the Galaxy, and thus the Chiss, would be better served by a restored republic, yes Thrawn would switch sides.
The hidden strength of Thrawn's ability to understand and thereby manipulate or defeat cultures would be his ability to win over more support for the Rebellion. For example, he would identify a world the rebellion would strongly benefit from having on their side, he would then study them to come up with a strategy for missions to win that world or people over.
And he would probably do that several more times, as many of these worlds were going to switch, or were pretty much already on their side, without his nudging anyways, including Sullust, Kashyyk, Kamino, Dornea... there's likely more, but for some reason, I'm having major troubles trying to search it up.
Since Emperor Palpatine had met Thrawn since the days of the Outbound Flight, he had witnessed his military genius and that is why he was more than glad to see Thrawn's potential employment in the Imperial Military and that is why he ultimately promoted him to the rank of Grand Admiral despite being an alien and despite the shock he caused to the humanocentric Imperial Navy. Therefore, if Palpatine ever learned that Thrawn joined the Alliance he would have sent one of the Emperor's Hands or even Darth Vader to assassinate him and since those were force-sensitive beings, they would have most likely been successful. I greatly doubt that Palpatine would have ever allowed such a competent officer in the service of his enemies, particularly because he knew him in person and was aware of his unique abilities.
old comment ik, but thrawn has always been acutely aware of the advantages of force weilders, i honestly believe that one of the first things he would have done is seek out a way to counter them, which would have led him to the ysalimiri which of course negates the force itself. he would have been fine, and frankly i think he would have been VERY interested in helping luke become more powerful in the force for his battle meditation and other perks.
@@canisarcani And how exactly could have helped Luke when he wasn't even strong in the Force. Apart from that, Darth Vader is a killing machine with or without the Force. Lastly the ysalimiri isn't part of the new canon...
@@EpaminondastheGreat whats canon or not now is completely irrelevant to this conversation. this is a what if scenario that uses BOTH disney canon and legends materials, so yes, the ysalimiri DO matter. also, seeing as how in your new precious canon a lightsabers crystal is inherently linked to the force, rather than just being a focusing crystal, being cut off from the force would prevent it from working anyways. sure vader if formidable, but without the force and without a lightsaber he is just an asthmatic cyborg dressed in bdsm leathers. (XDD that last was a joke of course)
as far as how he could help luke, i was actually refering to after the empire fell and luke was looking to establish his jedi praxium... or what ever the hell darth mickey calls it... by helping to set up proper fucking defences this time around.
@@canisarcani "your precious new canon", take it easy boy take it easy. As I said in my first comment, the Emperor had at his disposal the most deadly people under his service, with or without the Force. After all, the Grand Admiral was assassinated in the old canon (through treason though) by a professional assassin. No matter how ingenious the Admiral might have been I doubt that he would have escaped. Apart from that you mix the 2 canon. The lightsaber in the old canon doesn't have any relationship with crystals and the Force and the ysalmiri wouldn't do anything to its function. You will either one or the other. Choose...
@@EpaminondastheGreat all i meant is that this vid uses both. personally i will always take legends over diswars every time. also yes that means the lightsaber would work. i DID imply that after all. and im not the one that needs to choose, youre the one who said that the ysalimiri arent canon anymore.
at anyrate i highly doubt vader would ever get anywhere close to thrawn. vader needed to have luke come to him after all, cause he couldnt get to him otherwise. yes in the comics he tracked down luke several times, but as YOU said thats not canon anymore.. so choose one or the other. Choose...

This was pretty good. So good in fact that it kind of begs the question, "isn't it a bit unrealistic that Thrawn didn't simply join the New Republic, especially if his concern was to be ready for the Yuuzhan Vong?" Seems like he only fought the New Republic because plot reasons, there needed to be an Imperial bad guy.
The Republic was too weak and ineffective in his eyes. He thought the new republic would be a repeat of the old republic; slow to get anything done, corrupt to the bones, and not very military-focused.

Fair enough.

Thrawn is one of those words that sounds less like a word the more you say it.
My what if starts early in Thrawn's career with the Empire in which he was assigned to baby sit a certain senator, most likely by a senior officer who wanted to humiliate him. Instead he and Mon Mothma developed a strong mutual respect for each other. Her influence took some of the ruthlessness off him and when she had to run he accompanied her with some of his crews, ships, ground troops and early plans for the TIE Defender. Destroying the first Death Star and preventing the second one from being built would have been a high priority for him.
I think the best outcome is for his defection, is that he gets betrayed by the Empire and get save by the Rebellion, and gets convinced to join. 🤔😉
seems very unlikely. thrawn had palpatine on his side, so despite all the crap he got from the others, he still had the leader on his side, meanwhile, the rebels are scared of thrawn. it depends on when, of course, but the emperor knew exactly how competent thrawn was, and wouldn't be so stupid to burn such a well-made bridge.
I'd say more like the empire pulled a kashyyyk and somehow (most likely how they did the lasats and mandos)
Pushed the chiss into submission and nearly wipe them out due to their growing power, this causes thrawn to betray the empire
@@Smelly556 Thrawn would immediately come the Csilla's aid as his duty is first to the Chiss Asendancy and the Empire would lose. But he would still leave the Empire.
@@avyay9818 maybe a few surviving chiss leaders would join the rebels like stent or ar'alani or even siath

Maybe he does become ally of the resistance, we dont know what happened to him yet and i dont think the chiss would like to cooperate with even more wierder Space Nazis
Thrawn finally realizes rule through fear and property destruction on a mass scale isn't a good strategy for getting the galaxy on your side, and starts to use the political part of his brain.

Please do, What the empire would do if there were no rebels
well here's another premise for you to ponder, what if in the two years after the battle of Yavin, Grand Admiral Thrawn secretly made contact with the rebel alliance in order to defect but the method of his defection was designed such the Empire and Palpatine thought him to be dead.

In legends thrawn sounds kinda like a mary sue, perfect in military tactics etc.
Kastriot Krasniqi he’s definitely skirting the edges of Mary-Sue-dom in both canon and legends... he’s apparently “bad at politics” which honestly just looks like a random weakness Timothy Zahn stuck in there to make him seem less op. I mean, I love the character, but his ability to outwit EVERYONE all the time with no hesitation or uncertainty is kind of a sign of poor writing...

Thrawn...an opponent so op that his defeat had to have become a cheap betrayal
What if the Mandalorians won the Mandalorian wars?
Favorite video! I also think that Thrawn during the transition to the New Republic, he would also help them form a more stable government. And the issue for the Rebellion was always they could not -hold- territory from the Empire. The only places they 'held' would be in the far off Outer Rim. And even then wherever they would commit significant forces to a region for an extended period of time the Empire would swarm them massively. Again amazing video!
After watching the Rebels midseason trailer, I think we’ll be seeing Trawn’s ruthlessness by bombarding Lothal

2) 2 Harrower class Dreadnaughts vs 1 Imperial Star Destroyer (Dealers choice)

5) Factions Compared: Best Military Commander
The rebels would probably still have attacked the 2nd Death Star, so long as Thrawn wasn't the Commander-in-Chief (Mon Mothma's position), Minister of War or Chief of Staff. If he had been it would either have been his decision or he could have had the authority to pursuade Mon Mothma. However as a senior officer, level with or below Ackbar, he would have been 1 voice and still probably outvoted.
Just imagine Thrawn as Ackbar's 2nd in command of the Rebel Fleet though, those 2 together wow.
While Thrawn was highly competent and did earn his rank... it's questionable as to whether or not he would have been able to provide a marked difference in the Galactic Civil War...
For one, is that the Rebel Alliance lacked the population bases and military resources to fight the sort of war that he fought against the New Republic in Legends. About the only planet they really "controlled" was Mon Calamari and before Endor, I'd tend to think that the Empire never attacked the planet because attacking it wouldn't stop the Rebellion. Yes, the Rebels got a lot of support from Mon Calamari with regard to their capital ships and some of their leaders, but it wasn't something that is really on par with what Thrawn would have in Legends...
In Legends, while the faction that Thrawn took direct command off was weak, he STILL had access to several planets that could provide food, resources, and manpower. In this, while his front line strength was weak, he had the resources available to go into the sorts of measures that he did, which in a sense would be time consuming to put together... along with the base defenses to protect them as he tried to build up his strength.
The Rebels at around the time of the Battle of Yavin to the Battle of Hoth wouldn't have that. While Yavin was a great victory and saw a super weapon destroyed, it was still costly... particularly on the sense that it came shortly after the Battle of Scariff which saw a large portion of the Rebel navy destroyed. And if after Hoth, he'd be joining a Rebellion that just got its butt handed to it and lost its only real ground base...
Thrawn wouldn't have the ability to either raise clone armies or gather droids. As the cloning center would need to be defended, which the Rebels wouldn't have the resources to handle. The same would be true for a droid factory. In this, I wouldn't see Thrawn with the Rebellion launching anything close to what he did against the New Republic in Legends. The Rebellion simply didn't have the resources or manpower execute that sort of strategy...
Now... he MAY have operated under a more precise version of the sort of raiding strategy that the Rebellion had already been using, but it should be considered questionable as to how well that would work in the long term. As while he was a competent and dangerous foe, he wasn't invincible. In fact the New Republic DID beat him throughout the Thrawn trilogy. The issue that kept him dangerous was that he managed to think far enough ahead that he had contingencies for any failure...
Thrawn lost at Sluis Van when he tried to steal New Republic ships, but he launched the attack in such a way that while he didn't gain the ships, winning the battle took those ships out of action for the foreseeable future for the New Republic. So, while they were still on the list of ships in their fleet, they weren't going to be doing much. He lost Karrade and control of Mara Jade, but found someone else who knew where the Katana Fleet was and got the information that way. And that set up the bigger campaign depicted in "The Last Command." He'd had the campaign so well thought out that he could take some defeats here and there...
And if that's applied to the Rebellion, that COULD work, but it would still have to work within the context of the resources and capabilities the Rebellion had between Yavin and Endor. They didn't have the resources for the sort of campaign that he fought in Legends and he'd have to settle for raiding strategies...
And at the same time, the Death Star II was the perfect trap. Had the Rebels NOT engaged, the Empire would have completed it, and since the Death Star II WOULDN'T have the video game weak spot, it would be impervious. The entire emphasis of the Rebels at Endor was that they would only get one chance to destroy the station, and that would be while the station was under construction. After it was completed... the only thing they could do was over power the station's crew, but the Rebellion wouldn't have the raw manpower to take over the Death Star... and while seeing how Thrawn would get on with a competent and sane Luke Skywalker rather than the insane Joruus C'boath would be interesting... Luke wasn't the sort to do battle meditation at that time. He would have "preferred" to be at the front, particularly if it meant confronting Vader or Palpatine...
In this, I'd see that Thrawn would have been overruled by Ackbar and Mothma on attacking the Death Star II... They had no other viable option. And with the knowledge of Palpatine's tendencies... I don't think that Thrawn would risk Palpatine completing the battle station and turning its destructive power on Csilla as punishment for Thrawn's defection. I'd think he'd probably support the attack for that reason and put together some modifications to Ackbar's plan that he'd feel would raise the Rebel Alliance's odds at Endor...
In fact... if he's thinking ahead, he might expect a trap and put together a plan that would know how to spring it in a way that would better suit the alliance rather than blunder into it and hope for the best...
YAY FOR THRAWN, I LOVE THESE VIDEOS! I AM READING THE THRAWN BOOK RIGHT NOW!
I just realized something that cannon thrawn have from legend is that his plans work perfectly only problem is that imperial personal love glory and crack under pressure
Plus I think we fans love Thrawn is because he's one of little imperials that is capable of command. I'm glad he's brought back to cannon in rebels. Still waiting for that second book.
I wonder whats thrawn rank in the Chiss ascendancy. I really want to know. In cannon and legend
Damn those Mon Calamari, They should be the leaders of the new republic since they made some of the best capital ships in starwars.
But everytime I think about the empire their equipment, vehicles, training makes total sense. Even though they're crap they make sense.
Rebels got everything pretty much free, at a point. surprise the rebels have alot of y-wings IK the empire destroyed most of them
I'm pretty sure Thrawn was exiled from the Ascendancy (he used tactics the ruling houses didn't like). Thats how he joined the Empire- they found him stranded on some planet in the middle of nowhere.
Or at least, thats what happened in Legends, not sure about current canon...
Yea cannon is a mystery, maybe he is in a high rank since eli was able to get in the chiss
To be fair, Thrawn didn't execute that officer for failure. Thrawn executed him for not admitting to his failure, and making excuses. When another officer fails the same task, but is honest about his attempt, Thrawn rewards him.
Thrawn is badass, even in rebels!
Thrawn with droid armies would be a nightmare
Unbeatable
He could have made a perfect Supreme Chancellor for the New Republic as well. 😉
@mc yes Kek
No Thrawn isn’t very good with politics, I think he would take the seat of the Military Chief, he would manage the entire New Republic Military and would have definitely dealt with the First Order much sooner.
I love this alternate timeline Eck! And once again you made such a brilliant video about it!!!!! :)
Basically Star Wars becomes Code Geass.
Finally i been waiting to hear that!
When you just realize that Luke has grey eyes then forget everything else about the video and rethink your entire life.
I was actually early this time! What's up guys!
THAWN AKA SPACE SUN-SUE IS AWSOME! ARK OF WAR AT ITS PERFECTION!
How about the mammoth mk2 from command and conquer vs the AT-AT?
Mammoth all the way.
Hey EL this was a really cool topic that you should go further!
Now do Space battleship Yamato vs super star destroyer eclipse
Interesting possibility, I think Thrawn would have ordered the attack on the Death Star II but he would have had a strategy in place to handle the obvious trap.
Always thought of Thrawn as the Star Wars equivalent of Tywin Lannister minus the family issues. Brilliant, stern and surrounded by incompetent or at best average subordinates.
