My Dad grew up studying with a kerosene lantern in a tar paper roofed house. He had to walk to school early to build the fire in the wood stove in a one room schoolhouse. His aunt was the teacher and she didn't want any of the other kids thinking she was playing favorites. One day he was picking crops with his Dad and the sun was going down and his Dad said, "Son, I know it's getting late and you're getting hungry, but can you pick a few more minutes"? He said, "Yes Sir". He said it was more than any few minutes as that sun was going down behind the now orange back-lit silhouette of his father. Once again his father would say, "Son, can you pick just a few more minutes, just a few more minutes"? And Dad repeated, "Yes, Sir". He said they used to go down to that one room schoolhouse and sit on tailgates and bumpers to listen to FDR's Fireside Chats over a loudspeaker they had put on the outside of the schoolhouse. After listening to those, why, he thought the government owed him a living until he got his first paycheck for working. He found out quickly just who the government is and what they do.
@@valkyrie1066 Also, not a life lived by love-of-money as if a god as some. I'm a 61 year old man and I admit i shed a couple tears watching you watch this song it's been a favorite of mine for more than a couple of years. Dolly is amazing she wrote the saddest song ive ever heard i still wonder what inspired her to write it . The song is called " Me and little Andy " enjoy your reactions young man 👍❤️
Awesome song isn’t it! It is indeed a personal true story of Dolly’s. I’m glad you chose this one and that you love and appreciate it too. Great reaction! ❤
Dolly has written so many famous songs based on her life. The one that moves me is the famous song I Will Always Love You. It was the story of deciding to go on as a solo act. She wrote it for him.
I'm 77 years old and have been listening to Dolly since her time on the Porter Wagoner show back in the 60s. She's a marvelous talent. Enjoyed your reaction. Thank you.
I'm 60 years old, Mr. Cotner. I remember the Porter Waggoner show! I used to watch it with my grandmother. She had a pair of parakeets named Dolly and Porter. One morning, we found Porter belly up. Dolly lived a good long time.
I was raised in a suburb of Detroit and saw Dolly and Porter at the local high school in 1972! I wish I could post the picture i took of Ms Dolly after the show! she was so kind and polite and made this li'l 14 year old girl comfortable and very loved and appreciated!! I'm now 66 and cherish that photo I took with my li'l Brownie camera!!
Not a “Coat of Many Colors” comment but brought back a memory in the same realm. My Grandmother was a seamstress who sewed clothing as a living. She made clothing and quilts for her family from scraps and outgrown clothing of my moms and her siblings. My mother many times pointed out to me a dress or other clothing she recognized as wearing in her youth in the quilts. I have and treasure the many quilts Mama Pence made to warm her family.
She's our National and World Treasure. I can't sing this song karaoke without a few warm-up cries, every time. It just gets to me, the bullying, her innocence. Everything you will ever learn about her, you will never find anything ugly. Very few people can have that said about them.
This is a true story and Dolly actually DID cry over the way she was made fun of when she wore that little coat that was obviously homemade and was made of rags. She said that the pain of the way she was laughed at didn't totally dissipate until she wrote that song and made a lot of money off of it. She said it's amazing how money can made pain go away. She also said that for years all the royalties for this song went to her mother, clearly because her mother was the one who made the little coat. I can totally identify with this song. My mother made dresses, skirts and blouses for me out of feed sacks. Back when I was a child, sugar, flower, and different kinds of feeds came in cloth bags that had pretty designs of flowers on them. If my mother could get two bags with the same design she would have enough cloth to make me a dress but if she didn't have two that were alike she would make me a skirt or a blouse or make one of my brothers a shirt. I also quite often went to school wearing shoes that had holes in them and yes, the other kids would laugh at me. I know EXACTLY how Dolly felt. I think a lot of us who were poor and grew up at the same time that she did, experienced what she did and this is why we love Coat of Many Colors and made it the mammoth hit it became.
My parents spent all their money on the house we lived in so we could go to a good school, so we didn't have much, only new clothes we got was at Christmas or birthdays, we'd get a couple new items, everything was second hand, and going to a nice school, all the other kids had new name brand stuff and we had clothes from salvation army and garage sales, mom and grandma would also buy fabric and make clothes, so I definitely know that feeling
So many times there was little to no food, no electricity. Kids are cruel and can all learn the lesson of knowing we are blessed by even the smallest thing. Money doesn’t make you rich.
Dolly Parton is a force to be reckoned with. Brilliant singer, songwriter (over 3000 songs!), guitar player, showman, businesswoman, and actress. She is smart as a whip. If you watch her on old talk shows, the hosts tend to talk down to her, like she's some kind of bumpkin, but she puts them in their place in a hilarious way. Her most famous song is I Will Always Love You, which Whitney Houston covered for the movie The Bodyguard and made Dolly a shitload of money, which she thanked her for. And Jolene, as others have mentioned.
Me and Little Andy is pretty well known. If you want something truly amazing and not well-known.... check out Nickeks and Dimes, or You Are. Trust me!!!
I've been a fan of this song since it came out in the 60's and I cry every time I hear it. Lost my wife, 19 September 2007 and cry even harder now. She was a fan of it too, so it's more ponient (sp.) now.
Our National Treasure.. love Dolly. This is my all time favorite song from Dolly.. She wrote songs from her childhood and her heart. How can you not love Dolly. Great song writer, great performer, amazing Lady
My Grandma made quite a few of my school clothes when I was in school and all the other kids didn't say anything about them, it was the 1960's so I'm sure many of the kids were wearing handmade clothes, I felt special when Grandma got her sewing box out and reached for her tape measure when she asked me to come over, all but one of my school pictures was taken wearing clothes made by my Grandma! I miss her very much! She did live to be 99 so I had her around for a long time but you always want more time don't you!
My mother was a talented seamstress and made clothing for many of our friends and family. She learned the basics from the 4H club during the Great Depression of the 1930,s. Her expertise developed with a commitment to excellence and love. I know that she wasn’t too keen on making those perfectly lined mini skirts for me in High School, but she did it to please me. Side note: They were custom tailored and superior to any garment from the department stores. Thank you, mom. Love in every stitch ❤️
@@susannalley5376 That's awesome! Those home-made clothes are some of the best clothing I ever wore, they always fit perfectly and we ended up making a quilt from the left over pieces with two inch squares, I had the quilt for fifty some years, then I passed in on to a friend who was going through a tough time, it was hard to part with and I miss it sometimes, but she hugs it and she says it is like hugging me so it is worth it to me! Thank you for your reply!
How is it we seem to have forgotten that being a Mom, a parent, is THE MOST IMPORTANT JOB IN THE WORLD? The perpetuation of ALL societies depend on the raising of the next generation. ALL other efforts should be in the support of this single endeavor, to afford the next generation the opportunity to grow up in a loving and secure environment where the values of society can be instilled in them. ANYTHING that detracts from that fundamental purpose, is deleterious to our children, and to our society, as it is our children who are the future.
Back in the early 50s my mom made my play clothes from chicken feed bags, that my grandmother got for her chickens. They were made of cloth and had printed designs on them.
Oh my goodness! My Mother grew up poor in New England and she played this song to me when I was a child. Of course I cried and hugged her. She was such a warm and strong person! Both Dolly and my Mother 💕Great story telling! 😽🎶🖤
I love when Dolly writes about her childhood, hometown, the people she loved & knew. There's another artist who's a great songwriter, Donna Fargo. Sh has written so many songs. I thought it was normal not to have indoor plumbing, to have ice forming on the iniside of the windows and even on the walls sometimes in winter beside my bed, and having rats and mice throughout the three room shack we called home.
