  • CATBOAT SAILING | SKINNY WATER SERIES 2019: PENIKESE ISLAND
OUR “SAILING SKINNY WATERS” SERIES IS ALL ABOUT FINDING THOSE SHALLOW-WATER GUNKHOLING SPOTS THAT ONLY CATBOATS AND OTHER SHALLOW-DRAFT BOATS CAN GO. I’M SO EXCITED TO BE BRINGING YOU OUR SECOND VIDEO IN THIS SERIES, WHERE WE GET TO GO TO AN ISLAND CALLED “PENIKESE ISLAND”. IT IS ONE OF THE ONLY ISLANDS IN THE ELIZABETH ISLANDS CHAIN WHERE YOU CAN ACTUALLY GET OFF THE BOAT, STRETCH YOUR LEGS, AND EXPLORE
AS MOST OF YOU KNOW, THE ELIZABETHS ARE A CHAIN OF ISLANDS OFF THE COAST OF WOODS HOLE ON CAPE COD. THE MAJORITY OF THESE ISLANDS ARE PRIVATELY HELD BY THE “NAUSHON ISLAND TRUST”, A FAMILY TRUST DEDICATED TO THE PRESERVATION OF THE NATURAL BEAUTY OF THESE ISLANDS SINCE 1898
SO DO YOU WANT TO COME WITH ME TO EXPLORE ONE OF THE ONLY ISLANDS IN THE ELIZABETH ISLANDS CHAIN WHERE YOU CAN ACTUALLY GET OFF THE BOAT AND WALK AROUND? WE ARE NOT TALKING ABOUT CUTTYHUNK. TODAY, WE WILL BE SAILING THE SKINNY WATERS OF HISTORIC PENIKESE ISLAND.
BUT CUTTYHUNK AND PENIKESE ARE NOT PART OF THIS FAMILY TRUST AND SO YOU ARE ACTUALLY FREE TO GO ASHORE.
BUT LIKE NASHAWENA ISLAND, I’VE NEVER BEEN THERE BEFORE, SO WHY DON’T YOU JOIN ME ON THIS ADVENTURE INTO THE SKINNY WATERS OF PENIKESE ISLAND?
    Comments by Dr. Jeremy Whitney:
"Penikese is probably the most underrated harbor in Buzzards Bay. Many of these little harbors are discovered by examining the chart. If we look at Penikese on the chart, we see at the north end of the harbor where it is colored green to indicate a paucity of water, a snug little space with good north and east protection. But is there enough water to get into the place? Well YES!!!
At high tide a boat with less than two feet of draft can hug the shore to the left, passing a sandbar with assorted rocks on the right and avoiding a few rocks on the left. You will see the word "foul" on the chart. The approximate location of the bar is under the "ou" of "foul", and your course would be under the "f". Once past this narrow entry with rocks on either side, you are in a little pond with no rocks and a sandy bottom, sufficiently deep to float at low tide. The secret is to enter on tan evening high tide and leave on the next morning tide.
If the tide is not right, and the weather report is good, you may anchor off the dock on the west side of the harbor or tie up to the dock. Pull up the board if the tide is low or falling
You may go ashore here. The buildings beyond the dock house are for the old Penikese Island School, a training school for delinquent boys below the age of 17. Don't be bashful. Check out the school, and then walk around the Island, most of which is in its natural state. Blueberries are abundant. The views are superb. In fact, the view from the privy is among the best on the Island. It is best to avoid the little peninsula to the east because it is a bird nesting ground. For more information on the school, read CASTAWAYS by George Cadwalader.
The easiest approach is from the south, rounding the south point and heading for the dock and leaving the rockpile to the right. The way in from the east is more constricted but not dangerous if a few things are kept in mind. First, good water may be found by staying in a line 100 yards southwest of a line drawn between the south point and the east point. Second, favor the Penikese side of the channel, avoiding the Gull Island side, because there are many rocks in a shoal extending out from that side. On the chart there are two asterisks (rocks) which appear to be smack in the channel, and in contradiction to the advice given above. These are shown just above the designation "rky" on the chart. In summary, a safe narrow channel may be found by lining up the two points which bracket the harbor, and staying on a parallel line about 100 yards offshore. Sometimes this requires a series of short tacks if you are sailing.
Penikese has an undeserved stigma associated with its part as a leper colony and its past role as a minimum security penal institution for young boys. If you can rise above this and pay a visit, far from the maddening crowd a mile to the south, then Penikese will probably become a regular haunt."

I can't tell you how much I'm loving these videos. Love your music choices, its sooo relaxing. This video made me think about my favorite books, looking at these island homes, and who could be living in them..or are they deserted..and what would make someone want to live out there all alone. Fascinating to think about. Such a beautiful job Jim,thanks!

Thanks Jill, I really appreciate it!!! This is a whole lot of fun to do. I hope to bring Andrew into the UA-cam world as well. I think he would love it.

Makes me happy to see all these videos of cats on Buzzards bay. I have a Parrot Disco and a drone I need to dust off to add to the fun. Keep it up. I went to Cuttyhunk and was met with good company, about 3 other M22s and Dolphin. Been wanting to walk around Penikese since looking into it, and especially now seeing this video (and confirmation the colony is no more).

Hi Mike. Oh....Dolphin!!! I salivate at the though of meeting the owner of that boat. I almost did at the recent CatBoat Rendezvous at Padanaram last July. In fact I did a video of that rendezvous as well which features footage of Dolphin. The link to that video is ua-cam.com/video/ia2EmvVz7RI/v-deo.html. Hope you enjoy it. Many thanks for your response. I really appreciate the feelback. Jim Andersen, CatBoat Adventures
