  • CATBOATS, PIRATES & GRANDCHILDREN - This is a video that captures the dreams and imagination of my 5 year old grandson Victor. It takes us into the fantasy world of finding an old key hidden in a library book about pirates, and then upon a little more searching, we find a map where "X" marks the spot. But the island it is buried on is called Monkey Island!!! We searched on Google Earth and found "Little Island" in Padanaram, South Dartmouth, MA. We learned that Little Island is nicknamed "Monkey Island" by the locals. And so off we went in our CatBoat "You Betcha" in search of pirates and buried treasure. We hope you enjoy the journey.
    I've learned that being a grandfather is all about creating experiences and memories in your grandchildren that will last a lifetime, and I hope we accomplished that with this video.
    But I'd like to hear from you!!! So let's start a conversation. Let me know, in the comments below, those special experiences or places that you've shared with your children or grandchildren.
    If you like this video, please feel free to click that "Like" button. And if you'd like to see more videos like this, please consider subscribing to the channel. And click on that "bell" notification and you'll will be on your way.
    In future videos we will explore all the special little coves, rivers and harbors where only shallow draft sailboats like CatBoats can venture. We call this "gunkholing" and those special shallow water places are called sailing in "skinny waters". We'll start with Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts. But I also look forward to venturing beyond into southern Cape Cod, Narragansett Bay and elsewhere in New England as well.
    So let’s set out on this adventure together and have some fun. Maybe it will generate lots of conversation on the subject of gunkholing and sailing in skinny waters and maybe, in some small way, it will entice you to do the same with your boat.
    Later this summer I'd like to explore the following places around the Elizabeth Islands and greater Buzzards Bay area:
    • Quissett Harbor
    • Hadley Harbor
    • West Falmouth Harbor
    • Lackeys Bay
    • Naushon Island
    • Pasque Island Marsh
    • Nashawena Harbor
    • Penikese Island Harbor
    • West End Pond (Cuttyhunk)
    • Cuttyhunk Harbor
    • Westport River
    • Allen's Pond
    • West Island Cove
    For those who don't own a Cat Boat, and might be considering buying one, I plan on taking you behind the scenes, later this fall to Marshall Marine and Areys Pond to see how wand where these beautiful boats are manufactured. Maybe this will help you take the plunge.
    Questions of the day,

    MUSIC in today's video was brought to you by:
    Maximilian by Bonnie Grace - The song that sounded like a Pirates of the Caribbean adventure. Bonnie does a great job capturing the excitement of the adventure. Let me know what you think of that song.
    The song as we returned to the boat was called "Chillout Lounge Windsurfing" by Ron Gelinas. You can find that song on his album called Windsurfing

    That was more entertaining than I expected. I'm impressed with your ability to gather drone footage of your boat under sail in reasonably breezy conditions. Was the drone controlled from your boat, or elsewhere?

      Thank you so much for your comment. It means a lot to me. I had so much fun doing that video. It was a whole lot of work, as I needed to gather a lot of B footage before I even began putting the adventure together. Dropping the anchor with one hand while filming it with the other was also a challenge. Yes, the drone was controlled in the boat. The drone footage was a particular challenge as well, as I was flying the drone while sailing the boat (by myself) at the same time. I don't recommend that people try that at home. Fortunately the software and auto features of DJI drones allow you to do that.

      Sorry Neil, I almost missed your comment. Thank you so much for commenting. I really appreciate it. Not sure about the best grandad award. Anyone can actually do the buried treasure thing. the challenge for me was trying to film it while attempting to keep my grandson focused. 5 year olds don't stick to the script if you know what I mean. Thanks again. All the best, Jim Andersen

    The cat boat is beautiful too. I want to did something similar with my kids. We had saved pennies in a big car boy thousands and thousands so I taught them how to do orienteering and made them go halfway around the town and woods and waters etc. on a treasure hunt and I had buried everything when they found it. It was so cool they brought it in laid out all the pennies in a big sheet enrolled in it.

To see the spirit and enthusiasm on my grandson's face was priceless. Now that I've set the bar high, and will have to so something for the other grandkids. Oh no!!! Thanks again for your comment. Many thanks. It was a ton of work to put that video together. A real editing challenge from a whole lot of different angles. Including putting together the library of B Roll footage that I now have. I want to increase the amount of arial footage on that boat because it showcases the boat so well. I really love flying the drone and want to learn more about it. Anyway, many thanks for commenting. It really means a lot to me.

    • @catboatadventures7208
      @catboatadventures7208  5 років тому

      Hi Linda, the boat's name "You Betcha" was one of my father's favorite terms. And so I felt honored to name the boat after that. I also named my little dinghy "Don't Cha Know" which I understand is another popular mid western term. We all miss him dearly. At least the part of him before he got sick. He would have loved that boat. And I suspect I probably would have loved that video as well.

      @@hearsejr I just finished Henry Plummer's book. Really loved it. Although I don't think I have it in me to do the same trip in such a small boat. And hunting, fishing and eating what they ate along the way is not my cup of tea. But it was exciting to feel what it must have been like way back then

    This is an awesome video. How did you get that drone footage of the boat while under sail. I'm a little afraid of flying my drone over water. Keep those videos coming. I'm looking forward to the next one.

    • @catboatadventures7208
      @catboatadventures7208  5 років тому

      I flew the drone while sailing. While this might sound a little complicated, especially over water, it really isn't. With DJI drones and the amount of automation built in it is pretty easy. You put the drone up in the air, lock it in to the boat, and then start sailing. The drone follows you wherever you go. Retrieving the drone over water is a bit of a challenge. I stop the boat, and then return the drone manually, since "return to home" feature would obviously not work. To make sure you have enough time before the battery runs out, I start returning it at 50% battery level.
