SO IF YOU LIKED THE NORTHWEST GUTTER, YOU ARE GOING TO LOVE OUR NEXT ADVENTURE. WE ARE GOING TO THE OTHER SIDE OF HADLEY HARBOR TO A BEAUTIFUL LITTLE COVE ON THE OTHER SIDE OF GOAT ISLAND. AND YOU WILL NEED A CATBOAT TO GET THERE BECAUSE THE WATERS ARE SKINNY. AND IT’S ALL COMIN RIGHT UP SO STICK AROUND!!!
FEEL FREE TO CLICK ON THAT “LIKE” BUTTON IF YOU LIKE THIS VIDEO. AND CONSIDER SUBSCRIBING TO THE CHANNEL AND CLICKING ON THAT BELL NOTIFICATION IF YOU WANT TO BE NOTIFIED OF ALL OUR NEW VIDEOS. AND DON’T FORGET TO SHARE IT WITH YOUR FRIENDS SO THEY CAN ENJOY IT AS WELL
OUR “SAILING SKINNY WATERS” SERIES IS ALL ABOUT FINDING THOSE SHALLOW-WATER GUNKHOLING SPOTS THAT ONLY CATBOATS AND OTHER SHALLOW-DRAFT BOATS CAN GO.
I AM SO EXCITED TO BRING YOU OUR NEXT VIDEO IN THIS SERIES, WHERE WE GET TO GO TO THE OTHER HARBOR NEXT DOOR TO HADLEY. IT’S A PLACE CALLED THE “GOAT ISLAND COVE”. OR THAT’S WHAT I CALL IT ANYWAY.
THE COVE IS LOCATED JUST A LITTLE SOUTH OF HADLEY AND IT’S REALLY EASY TO GET TO. WHEN YOU ARE ENTERING HADLEY, INSTEAD OF BEARING RIGHT TOWARDS BULL ISLAND WHERE MOST PEOPLE GO, YOU GO LEFT INSTEAD. THEN SIMPLY FOLLOW THE LEFT SIDE OF GOAT ISLAND ALL THE WAY AROUND UNTIL YOU REACH THE COVE. I HAVE TO WARN YOU THOUGH, ON THE CHART, THE ENTRANCE TO THIS COVE APPEARS IMPOSSIBLE TO PASS THROUGH BECAUSE IT LOOKS TOO NARROW. AND THERE IS A ROCK ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THAT NARROW PASSAGE WHICH LIKELY SCARES MOST PEOPLE AWAY. BUT I’VE HEARD YOU CAN DO THIS, AND SO I WANT TO GIVE IT A TRY. AS I UNDERSTAND IT, YOU SIMPLY HUG THE SHORE. AND ALTHOUGH IT LOOKS LIKE A TINY LITTLE PASSAGE, THE ENTRANCE IS ACTUALLY ABOUT 25 FEET WIDE!! AND SO IT’S ACTUALLY PRETTY EASY TO SLIP RIGHT THROUGH WITH A CATBOAT. AND WHEN YOU DO, YOU WILL BE TREATED TO ANOTHER GEM OF A GUNKHOLING SPOT, AND YOU WILL VERY LIKELY BE ALL ALONE THERE. THE HOLDING GROUND IN THE COVE IS A BIT ON THE GRASSY SIDE THOUGH, SO ANCHORING THERE COULD BE A LITTLE BIT OF A CHALLENGE. BUT I UNDERSTAND IT CAN BE DONE. HADLEY HARBOR AND THE GOAT ISLAND COVE ARE DIRECTLY ACROSS FROM WOODS HOLE ON CAPE COD. BOTH HARBORS ARE PART OF NAUSHON ISLAND IN THE ELIZABETH ISLANDS CHAIN.
AS MOST OF US KNOW, THE ELIZABETHS ARE A CHAIN OF ISLANDS OFF THE COAST OF WOODS HOLE ON CAPE COD. THE MAJORITY OF THESE ISLANDS ARE PRIVATELY HELD BY THE “NAUSHON ISLAND TRUST”, A FAMILY TRUST DEDICATED TO THE PRESERVATION OF THE NATURAL BEAUTY OF THESE ISLANDS SINCE 1898. THE FAMILY REQUESTS THAT YOU RESPECT THEIR PRIVACY, AND SO YOU CANNOT GO ASHORE. BUT THAT’S OK, BECAUSE YOU GET TO ENJOY THE PEACEFUL BEAUTY OF THIS PLACE FROM THE WATER, AND YOU REALLY CAN’T ASK FOR ANY MORE THAN THAT.
Notes from the late Dr. Jeremy Whitney
"Deep draft yachts entering Hadley pass Bull Island and then turn right and head for the long deep harbor known as Hadley. Catboats can turn left at Bull Island into the Southeast Gutter and anchor in this channel with plenty of water even at low tide. Another option is to go down the narrow channel on the right, with Goats Neck on your right side. There is a little indentation in Goat Island about half way down this channel, a deep basin which makes a good anchorage. Note that the current moves swiftly through this channel. With a moderate current it is possible to enter the lagoon at the end of the channel. The chart indicates one-half foot so it would be good not to try at dead low tide. There is a narrow entrance to the lagoon, with a sizable rock, just under the water and usually in the middle of the passage. Stay to the right. Once you enter, go to the right and avoid the little bridge to the left because the current is very strong there. You are in a shallow, roughly square pond with two adjacent entrances, one of which has a bridge across it. You will see masts of the boats in Hadley Harbor close by to the northwest. You will very likely be all alone. Protection is good from all directions"

Jim, really enjoy your adventures. If you ever get over to Narragansett Bay, I've got some holes to show you from our Catboats!

Hi Rex. Thank you so much for your comment. I really appreciate it. And let's stay in touch. Narragansett Bay is definitely on my plan. In fact I already did a video on a Friendship Sloop out of Wickford RI. Take a look. ua-cam.com/video/64M1YqHvOMU/v-deo.html
Also, not sure if you saw the video on the Padanaram Rendezvous. I have two versions on my UA-cam site. A shorter version. And the long version with the Awards Ceremony. You were mentioned in that video by Bruce Almeida. Here is the link to that video. ua-cam.com/video/0CAvbRWLKk8/v-deo.html
      Enjoy, Jim...

Hi again Rex. By any chance do you sail out of Wickford? I would like to keep in touch regarding doing some videos in Narragansett Bay. Also, did you just attend the CatBoat Association annual meeting this past weekend?

@@catboatadventures7208 Yes, sail out of Wickford. Missed the Mystic event this year due to a ski weekend invitation. Look me up in CBA directory and Catboat in.
