Fitness Or Health? | Issues Whilst Out Wild Camping.

  • Keep developing some weird health issues now and again whilst out hiking. Had to change my plans on this two day wild camping trip out in the Scottish Mountains.
    This trip involved backpacking out into the 'Loch Mullardoch Munros' where I also spent a couple of nights out on the mountain summits.
    Due to the spectacular weather my plan had been to go round as many of the 12 mountain tops in the area as possible. However due to my health, this group of mountains more or less chewed me up and spat me out.

    You manage sooooo much more than a lot of people, perhaps you are trying too hard to impress the viewers. At only 52 and a long time in the forces, i get out of bed in the morning and can’t decide which bit of me hurts the bloody most nowadays. Your an inspiration and it is great to follow your adventures outdoors. Please take care of yourself and take the time to enjoy what you do and the scenery you bring to all of us, but please, chill and enjoy it yourself.

    Sometimes we bite off more than we can chew, and we all get those days when we know we are below par physically. But that's the beauty of backpacking - plans can be altered to the circumstances because we have all we need in our packs.

The idea that we would be disappointed in the video because he didn't cover as much ground as planned... well, the honesty and candor on the personal challenges of a backpacking trip makes it quite to the contrary. Great video! I just returned yesterday from a short section hike on the Appalachian Trail in Connecticut and found I had to go slow ascending some modest mountains with 30 lb on my back. I'm not as young as I used to be 😊, but I did my solo hike at my own speed and enjoyed it. As they say, HYOH!

    I wonder if your new boots are a bit heavier than you're normally used to wearing, they say that every extra pound on your feet is like an extra 5 pounds on your back, great film as always, thank you.

    • @RS.Outdoors
      @RS.Outdoors  4 роки тому +1

      They are heavier but not so much that I feel it affecting my hikes. A lot of people seem to get hung up on the weight of boots and there are many out there that I feel are too heavy. It is finding the right balance of comfort and protection. The Inov8s weighed about 325 grams each. My normal boots I wore for years, the Salomon Ultra Trek GTX boots are 530 grams each. So the Salomons are 205 grams heavier per boot, BUT they are full high leg soft leather and have never leaked. Good ankle support and a far thicker sole to protect against rocks. The new AKU boots I am trying are built like a tank and coping well with the Scottish Terrain and would be as heavy as I would go in a general walking boot at 600 grams each. So ok they are twice the weight of the innov8's but they are built like a tank, can be resoled, ballistic cordura so don't tear, fray or split. There are good boots that yes are heavier but offer far better support and protection. Many hiking boots with stiff heavy leather go the opposite way in weight so it is finding that balance. Some well known hikers have even used sandals so it comes down to what you are comfortable with. Atb

      @@RS.Outdoors Great to hear, I used walking shoes for a couple of years and was happy with them apart from the obvious water etc getting in much easier, I then changed to heavy leather boots which are fantastic but I do admit I did find the extra weight an issue for a while,ATB.

    Thanks for another great vlog, Ray. Good on you for achieving what you did, despite feeling so crock. Reminds me of the time I did the Aonach Eagach with some friends from work. We finished the ridge but got a bit lost on the descent and ended up to the east of the Clachaig Gully which was very steep and treacherous. After fighting our way down, I was so knackered that I literally crawled into the bar on my hands and knees. It was only when I woke up in the morning I discovered that I had the flu. Not the nicest of times but I think it was then I discovered my taste for whisky (for medicinal purposes initially!)
    Hope you can do something about your legs - there's a lot of Scotland left out there!
