On 20th January 2020, Dr Jonathan Wilson performed keyhole surgery in an NHS hospital to repair my inguinal hernia. I was lucky to have such an excellent surgeon on the NHS. Thank you Dr Wilson

Well, the four hernia surgeries that I’ve had over the past 15 years have caused the difficulty of urinating and constipation, which have caused what is called pelvic floor deficiency. So I have to go to all those specialist and they just tell you to take some over-the-counter medication to the go to the bathroom doesn’t sound like an educated solution coming from a surgeon like yourself. I really wish you would go back to the drawing board and figuring out how. We can resolve all of this. Without taking a medication that really just screws up more than fixing

I am physically active and live a healthy life style and have been all my life. I also never had a baby, never get constipated and I rarely cough or sneeze because I don't get colds or flus. At one job, I had to do lift, twist and bend, during Covid when customers were hoarding bulk sized groceries like 24 kgs of flour, multiple crates of water and 24 kgs of detergents. The movement was fast and repetitive in that, though we are told to practice good ergonomics, the cash register and bagging area was not designed as such and we are timed, our jobs depending on our productivity. That was when I got the hernia. It shocked me because since I was 18 I've been doing different types of crunches and leg raises and I have the six pack to show for it. I am 56. It seems so unfair to get this issue that is said to be an issue of out of shape folk when I have exercised daily all my life (calisthenics and cardio plus ballet, gymnastics, biking, running etc. No weights). Hearing this, I am thinking, "wtf!" Although the hernia was originally found by ultra sound, my doctor says the only way to monitor it is by MRI with dye. I neither want to go for regular MRIs to monitor my hernia and nor do I want that dye, which he says is necessary in order for him to see clearly. This is an inguinal hernia. How can I best monitor this thing? Also, the doctor said to stop doing abdominal exercises and pushups. I continue to because I don't feel pain. And also because I don't close my throat while exercising which I think is where pressure on the abdominal wall happens. Am I on the right track by insisting on monitoring by ultra sound and continuing to exercise? I can't tell because my doctor won't send me for an ultra sound.

That’s awful 🙁. Maybe it’s genetics or it can really develop from one or multiple occurances of straining really hard to pick something up. I also know about the throat closing thing but also don’t use your stomach to lift if that makes sense. Like you can still strain without closing the throat. Like whispering but with much more force. Could be also maybe doing the wrong exercises? I know sit-ups for example are bad for your back/spine.

@@InjusticeJosh I am positive it happened from repetitive lifting, twisting and bending. A guy at my work also got an inguinal hernia doing the same job. He went on WSIB and got a mesh repair. But WSIB does not provide enough to live on and being on it causes problems at work. I am focusing on when I feel the pain, which never happens during any of my exercises and only happens when I inadvertently go back to lifting, twisting and bending, even 10lbs now, as I'm working. This month I will be leaving this job anyway. I think the genetics thing is a guy issue, though not the cause of my colleague's hernia, given that I am female and got the same injury. I would avoid and recommend that both men and women avoid jobs that require lifting, twisting and bending. I consider myself lucky that I didn't get sciatica from it (which some of the other employees have). There is no ergonomically correct way to lift, twist and bend. It has to be lift, turn, bend and put down which slows us down too much to meet speed standards. I am hoping that whoever reads this takes a page from my book of experience.

@@wistfulsighs7791 What a terrible job then. I wonder what company would do that do y’all. Definitely not ethical. I wish you the best on finding a job.

Aw crap I‘ve suffered with constipation my whole life and I’m not very active. Less than 1,000 steps per day. I exercise some days of the week and I’m skinny idk if being skinny makes you less prone to hernias. Welp time to search for some healthy ab/pelvic workouts.

I see someone has liked my comment. Update? Eh still haven’t gotten to searching for ab workouts, just doing planks rn. (It’s hard to look for good and healthy ab workouts cuz the only other one I know of is sit-ups and apparently that’s bad for your back/spine)
But anyway I went on a cruise a few weeks ago and we walked a lot like 5k steps a day and I felt so good. I would go regularly like twice a day at times. Could be the volume of food was raised, but I think walking helps a ton. I now walk after my breakfast like 1,800 steps at a time and I feel so good my sleep improved and I go in the morning the day after whenever I do walk. I stopped for a few days and stopped going to the restroom which was a clear signal. It’s funny in school I would walk so much but I didn’t take enough fiber or eat anything healthy so I was constipated then. I wish I knew exactly how many steps I walked when in school must’ve been crazy high.
