I've been in the work world 35 years and never have I given a notice. I either got fired, quit, or laid off. Now at 57, I'm about to give my 1st 2-week notice.

@@mikeharris4562 I'll never give a notice again. One week into the notice, most calls me into office and says, "you can go NOW(SW MOTOR FREIGHT where I delivered and picked up locally) . It was right b4 the gave the bonus of 10% of your gross for year.
@@BUTGOD-j1x Yeah buddy I'm sorry but you can't get a bonus if you leaving the job 🤷 basically a two weeks notice is a invitation for another employee to replace you before you leave.
I've always had good relationships with my managers, so I've never had to do this, but I would say don't worry about burning a bridge if that's really what needs to be done though. If you already signed an offer letter & have a start date, you don't need your old job, they need you. If your manager gives you grief, walk on the spot. Companies don't give you two week notices when they're letting you go, you're under no obligation to give them a heads up either, it's strictly a professional courtesy.
100% correct...where I'm working right now they don't deserve any notice at all. They don't care about their employees, working conditions, equipment that is in disrepair, AC that doesn't work, etc.
@@wildbill23c walk as soon as you have a signed offer letter with a start date so where else. They don't even deserve a call.
Last point there - if it truly WAS a professional courtesy, it would go both ways. So watch how your company deals with severing employees. Sure, if someone was caught stealing, walking them on the spot is the correct move, but if we're talking most other reasons, including job performance, unless the company is consistently either giving adequate notice, or give exiting personnel "gardening leave" of similar length, if they don't want them to work out a reasonable notice period, they're not showing their employees the "courtesy" that they claim is so important for the employee to show the employer, so I don't see how they deserve any more from the employee.
If, as is often the case, they basically hand you your final paycheck up to current date and have security walk you to the door both when laying someone off/firing for minimal cause/someone gives them notice?
Then they get their "two weeks notice" on your last day there, conveniently backdated to two weeks ago, with a sheepish smile, a shrug, and something on the line of "I should probably have given you this earlier, but..."
So very situational, and at the end of the day, and as with many other things related to employment, it's the employer that sets and shapes the rules. An employer deserve courtesy commensurate with the one they give, so you always try to give a good employer every chance of mitigating damage from you leaving. You do your best not to actively screw over an average not good, but not bad, employer but you also don't do anything that actively inconveniences you.
As for bad employers? It's tempting to twist the knife as you leave, but actually, it's rarely worth it. Just go. These places tend to be so badly run anyway, so just the fact of you leaving is going to make shit go "boom" as you're exiting, but resist the temptation to help anything along.
Remember that even if you don't mind your employer hurting, you probably had at least one good coworker that is going to get caught up in the effects of you flinging the proverbial turd into the spinny "it's all the AC we can afford"-thingy as you leave and close the door behind you. So don't. They don't deserve that on top of what your former employer is heaping on them, nor do you want to try to stutter out an explanation for what they ever did to you to deserve that, when 10 years later, they're the hiring manager for your dream job.

I just hand it in. I've made the decision to leave. Why I am leaving isn't their business.

As I've said before elsewhere: when I gave notice I would be promptly escorted from the premises so I stopped giving notice. Every job I ever had was an at-will unskilled entry level soul-sucking nightmare with few if any benefits and no job security. Those type of employers use you up and spit you out. When it's time to go, just go. In my working "career" until the day I went out on disability I've never once been treated with respect or common decency by any employer. No employer I ever worked for deserved a notice, nor did they care If I gave one. 😕

The last straw with my current employer was their joke of a raise they gave their current employees and starting someone new off 15 cents an hour less than someone who's been there for 5+ years and in a higher position....not fixing issues that are reported to them, equipment, building, AC in disrepair, you name it this employer has failed at it.

That's a great way to start, change your phone number too, some employers won't get the hint for a while that you no longer work for them, and try to call asking how to do your job because they have no idea...trust me been there done that.

To be honest Sir. I have never had a Career which i want desperately at 43. Every job i have had has only been a job. Any advice is appreciated and helpful. I am really close to leave my current employer after three years of killing myself.
You write a letter saying, "Effective _____, I will be resigning my position at _____." You hand it to your boss two weeks prior to your final day.
throw it in the trash. don't put a 2 week notice. What im confused is why we have to put a two week notice for employer but they will fire anyone on the spot. Why are we acting like this is acceptable? Your not allowed to do this to me, but I am allowed to do this to you. Yikes

What companies treat their employees well enough to where you care that you are leaving them. They treat you horrible and hope that you leave.

Just take two weeks leave and hand your notice in , that if they've been assholes to you .
Many companies will pay you the two weeks and tell you not to come in any more. They’d rather you don’t sabotage anything by performing less than normal
NEVER give a 2 weeks notice. Give a 3 months notice... or a 0 weeks notice. be ready to leave before you talk to anyone. The only reason to stay at a job is to tie up loose ends that only you can, otherwise... time to leave.
