Hopefully you find these readily-deployable noble houses of Sembia useful in your campaign! The Netherese occupation had quite far-reaching effects on this "land of rich fat merchants." Thank you so much for your support, and I hope to continue creating resources like this for a long time: patreon.com/EdGreenwood
Can we get a shadowfell vid soon? I would love to hear your tellings of such a little known place. You have a great way of story telling, good tidings to you and yours.
Mr. Greenwood, thank you so much for this fleshing out of the Sembia. It was always a vague place of overly rich merchant lords that causes problems from their greed. I do have a few questions for you. Just how powerful in com paired to their neighbors is their military and magical might? Does Sembia have any natural resources of their own they they rely on? Besides the recent Netheril occupation, has anyone else invaded and occupied that nation before?
Loved the video! Am a bit surprised none of the Cormyrean noble families numbered among the 'Sembian Nobles'. Always thought there would be some bleed-through between the two countries in that regard. Noble marries merchant to get money, merchant marries noble to get legitimacy. Add a smidgeon of glorious generational intrigue and you wind up with a claimant to High Castle building an army to retake what they perceive as rightfully their own.
I'm noticing an interesting trend with the Sembian nobles .. they seem to like thunder & storm nicknames Ed .. are we sure the Sembian nobles arn't all secret Talos worshipers? :P
Me with my Sembian native, Noble background, wizard PC, whose family owns a country estate: 👁👄👁 It's funny, actually, I had searched Ed's videos for anything about Sembia just just last week lol She was going to be from Selgaunt, but now that this new Ordulin is a thing I just might have to change that.
Soooo when are we going to wonderful east (semphar, Khazari, Ra-Khati) and utter east (Ulgarth, Doegan Edenvale Konigheim The Free Cities of Parsani)? It was last year you guys told us you will share this area of Faerûn. Love to know more of unknown area of your world. 😊
Hey Ed, I don't know if you ever talked about this but, it would be nice to have a video or short about how do you come up with names for your creations.
I would love to see a video on the Chondathan noble houses of Arrabar. I'm currently playing a Psi-Warrior who's a member of House Darowdryn. I maintain that the Darowdryn's descended from the Blade-lords of the Jhaamdathan psiocracy.
Interestingly, since the floating city of Sakkor crashed into the ruins of Ordulin in 1484 and sealed the planar rift that initially destroyed the city in 1374, for Ordulin to have been rebuilt and ready to function as the capital again by 1499, I'm guessing that many of the ancient Netherese buildings in Sakkor were built solidly enough to mostly survive the fall, and the Sembians repaired and reused them.
Forgotten Realms was/is Ed's setting. Gygax had developed the Greyhawk setting, while Arneson had his Blackmoor setting. Weiss and Hickman had the Dragonlance setting. Baker came up with Eberron. There's a lot of settings out there beyond those that were officially published via D&D's product lines. Plenty of exploring!
Why isnt this channel HUGH! I don't understand? you should consider doing an collaboration with Jorphdan I'd be really interested in what your discussions would consist of
I love Sembia because their merchants can show up anywhere and be supporting both sides of most conflicts. I was hoping for a little more insight into the religious turmoil from the disappearance of their patron goddess.
Running a campaign out of Neverwinter. The group has itchy feet and wants to see the world. I could make it up, but watching these vids for lore, enough to build a campaign on anyway, just seems more...right.
Ah, I just had one more question for you Mr. Greenwood, now that Sembia has been humbled a bit. Does this make Archendale the most arrogant folk of the lands now?
@@edgreenwoodofficial Let me Guess Mr. Greenwood, is it the Zhents who are the most arrogant then? Still, after all these years, the Arkhen folk still haven't gotten humbled yet amazes me. I just hope the Scardale folk have recovered and have been redeemed after the plague ravaged them.
Why? The Realms are ours again... WOTC, wasn't really doing much with it, only a small section, independent creators are doing so much more including stuff from Ed himself.
Why, WotC is killing DnD and turning it into My Little Pony RPG, where everybody's happy and queer. FR went from being a grandiose and expansive setting with different places and well defined cultures to be an extension of Burbank.
I loved this game but it was difficult to get players to commit. This was one of those systems I spent more time building and collecting than playing. Ahhh, if only I had the skills to solo game then. I probably wouldn't have sold it all to play 40k.
The Maelstrom collapsed and dissipated in 1484 DR. Current Realms time is late in 1499 DR. You can build a LOT in 15 years if you have lots of money to pay builders and masons who desperately need the work.
@@edgreenwoodofficial hmmm, that's fair. Thanks so much for the reply, Ed! I've been running a game taking place in DR1504 while trying to be as true to the lore as possible (funny enough, the campaign began in Sembia! I however thought Ordulin was still just a wasteland, so I still had Selgaunt as the capital. Looks like I need to retcon that!)
Without a doubt, this year will be worse than the last. I lost a lot of money last year as a result of bad investment choices that I would not have made if I hadn't been so worried about my portfolio. I kept investing, but I couldn't determine whether to start paying for a house. In the end, I sold my positions, and the house needed more work than I had planned. I'm not sure how long I can keep going like this
True. My portfolio was diversified across several markets with the help of a financial planner, and were able to achieve over a million in net profit among high dividend yield equities, ETFs, and bonds. It is vital that you have a variety of exposure, including in firms that are currently generating cash flows.
Hey Ed, just to update you…. Waterdeep is no more, it’s mostly fallen into the sea after ‘The Twelve’ took it out during the civil war of the Emerald Enclave (the wildshape wars/the shattered emerald saga). We could do with Volo updating the guide… I know a group of adventurers that can probably secure him a reasonable amount of safety looking around the ruins…. For a fee of course ;)
Waterdeep no more? Don't tell the thousands who live there, and woke up just fine this morning. As for Volo's guides covering Waterdeep: I see them in my future.
1. You could talk for hours and that would be fine to me. 2. Many different Sembians, not all called Sembians or aware of Sembia 3. Chickens not hatched yet, are we sure? But taking a Sabbath day is good practice if it can be afforded, should always be done when possible. And always check our own intentions 4. I don't need to remind you or even Ivan of this, I don't think. But my self, and others, and it doesn't hurt to do so. I don't want to talk or do anything any more.

What happened to the Foxmantles? I was hoping to hear about them. Hope they weren’t wiped out.

"The Land of Fat Rich Merchants With Delusions of Importance" will never fit on a license plate for an Ox cart Ed!
Not with that attitude. 😂
git you a mobile redoubt and a couple rhinos then

14:31 the Fourth! 🙂
He has such a fantastic voice. I could listen to Greenwood talk all day.
Love the video. In the future could we get some Avariel lore? Maybe an update on Taegan Nightwind?
I enjoy every Ed Greenwood moment 🎉😊…Thank you for your service to the gamer communities
Thank you Ed! I, for some reason, decided to set my campaign in Sembia and just came across this video. Excellent stuff!
Another banger Sir...These videos are pure gold...Thank you Ed for the video and the yeras youve put into the Realms
Thanks!
is there any chance for future novels? any at all? i miss Elminster, i miss the Seven Sisters, I miss Forgotten Realms :(
Same here.
Same
Ed, we need you to write more non-Savage Frontier stuff. Novels in Cormyr or Sembia, Amn or Jhaemdath.
Love the new look
I guess some updates need to be made to online sources. They use the term Semmite to refer to people of Sembia.
nah

I did a handout on those noble houses for GenCon last year (the Candlekeep seminar). Must dig it out and use it for a bonus video...
Yo! Where did you get that little guy with the cool glowing bubbly cauldron!?
Ah, that's Ivan's. I'll ask him...

Totally made my day when I discovered Ed Greenwood had a channel on UA-cam. Gary Gygax started it, Ed continues it.

As always, very good material.
But I have a question: no Selkirks?
I have more Sembia videos up my sleeve. Several soon to appear, more down the road. The Selkirks will get their spotlight...eventually.

Taketh what thine will, leave the rest.
Ah, I just had one more question for you Mr. Greenwood, now that Sembia has been humbled a bit. Does this make Archendale the most arrogant folk of the lands now?
Nope, not by a long shot. The Arkhen are the most arrogant of the Dalesfolk, yes, and have been for centuries.

No more forgotten realms books is killing me.
Why? The Realms are ours again... WOTC, wasn't really doing much with it, only a small section, independent creators are doing so much more including stuff from Ed himself.
Jared..you referring to physical books?
don't tempt me. i might just take my campaign ideas and play through them myself, aka write a book.

You mean novels? One got released 2 months ago, but not a lot of people heard of it.

If only we knew more about the Eskevern Family 😂
please do the moonsheas, just sent a DM to watch you who never has.
Any noble family is playable if your dm is brave enough.
Ordulin was obliterated, with all that remained being a swirling maelstrom of dark energy from the shadowfell.
How was it rebuilt so quickly?
The Maelstrom collapsed and dissipated in 1484 DR. Current Realms time is late in 1499 DR. You can build a LOT in 15 years if you have lots of money to pay builders and masons who desperately need the work.
