Most people just drive until something breaks! If you can do maintenance yourself can save! Most of these shops today so expensive! I have found that these mobile mechanics work pretty reasonable and will come out to your house! Have to pay them cash but save hundreds of dollars! Get to learn a particular year and model and stay with it! They all have weaknesses and once you learn them you can defend the vehicle! I am a Dodge caravan guy since 1985. My current 2001 has 198K miles and going strong! I sold my 1999 Caravan on Craigs List with 327K miles for a thousand bucks three years ago! My current model has at least another 100K left on it but i will have to do stuff that i know will extend life! Good video! James

Hi Robert great videos. People get so scared and think even 100,000 miles is high. Regular maintenance is key and your videos explain to people why mileage is no problem if looked after. I bought a Volvo 850T5 1995 wagon at 159,000. 1owner from new, receipts for every service and repair and he changed the oil every 5000 miles from new. I drove 100000 miles in it and sold it to a new owner at 260000 and it had no oil leaks or problems. I had to change the radiator at 180000, ignition coil and the brake shoes for the handbrake broke inside the hub from age but apart from that it was just the usual brakes and tyres to replace. Amazing cars! The air con broke just before I sold the car but I made sure the new owner was aware of this.

Great Video Robert, you are 100% right about everything you listed and said about maintenance. I'm the proud owner of a 2002 Toyota Tundra 4.7 V8, (Bulletproof engine & tranny). As of today, I'm sporting 415,000 miles on the original motor just by regular maintenance and fluid changes. Other than a small bumper ding, she is still showroom... A high mileage maintained vehicle is far safer than a low mileage neglected one. My goal is 1Million miles and counting!!!

Intrigued considering that my current ride has 360,000. I did exactly what this gentleman said: I slowly brought the car back to top shape. New suspension, hoses, fluids, filters, tune up items always on a firm schedule. The car is a 1991 Lexus ls400 I bought 7 years ago with 287,000 miles. Confident in my daily driver.

Hi Robert, I want to say thank you so much for all the help you provide folks with your knowledge and experience. It is truly appreciated.
I have a 1994 Volvo 850 wagon with a 5 speed manual that I’ve had since 2001. The car had about 130,000 miles on it when I bought it and about 425,000 miles when I stopped driving it about 6 years ago, (fuel pump failed).
With the help of your videos, I finally replaced the fuel pump a couple of weeks ago and now plan on doing some fairly extensive and comprehensive maintenance and upkeep on the car, (what you refer to as stage 0), starting with a compression check.
I'm in my mid 60's and have done some automotive work, but not a great deal. Your videos give me the confidence to take on most of the tasks, and the wisdom to have some of the more daunting tasks (such as clutch and related parts replaced) done by professionals with the proper skills and tools. I also plan on painting the car, as the clear coat is in very bad shape. I would rather invest the time and money in this car than buy something else that I’m not familiar with. Plus a wagon with a manual transmission is probably not all that common.
Again thank you for your contributions to the Volvo community.
    Curt

Hi Robert. I recently bought a Volvo 940 GL 1992 model with 140,000 miles on it. I thought it was not that many miles for it's age. It was a one-owner car. I plan on doing a complete maintenance routine on it since there is no record of any maintenance or service work. Your videos are my greatest asset. I just subscribed to your channel and will be following you from here on out. Stage Zero is my immediate goal.

This is my third time watching--today . I am going to look at a 96' Volvo
GLT wagon tomorrow in San Jose
so before I drive the 100 miles there, I want to be prepared what to look for . The owner bought it from his
brother, which means All service records are available as per the phone call . It's a 5 cyl. and a $1600 asking price.
I would never have considered this buy without such a well rounded video that you provide here Robert, so
you deserve much credit . He says 220,000 miles but I am not deterred. I will take a rubber glove with me for the PCV test . Will update you tomorrow on whether i bought it.

I bought my 2001 civic for 500 candian dollars. Change all fluide and filter, cleaning injectors, throttle body, change every belt, adjust valve, a lot of engine seal, oil pan seal, valve colver gasket, all brakes, one caliper, 2 bearings. 1 suspension, link kit. tie rod inner an outer, reconditioned alternator, water pump, coolant hoses, thermosthat that it ! all by myselft with youtube. Today it's my daily drive. Every month i need to do 800km one shot. I never have any trouble to make it ! Fixing your on car is very satisfying. Timely maintenance can sometimes expose potential future problems and allows you to rule out items that have already been dealt with.

Love the video and the channel, man! You've made my life a little easier on several occasions.
I've had a number of Volvos over the years and if properly maintained, they go forever. I've had a '64 PV544 for 20 years now and it was a reliable daily driver for the first 5 before I took it off the road to restore it. It still runs and looks great, but I don't drive it much now. My '95 850 just hit 100,000 miles last week and runs and looks like new. Do the routine maintenance and keep up on the minor cosmetic issues and irritations like burnt out dash bulbs, headliners starting to sag, etc., and these cars last forever. Things only get more expensive to fix if you let them go.
FWIW, of 6 RWD Volvos I've owned, the '93 940 Turbo wagon was the nicest to drive. I'd still have it if it hadn't been rear-ended. Highest mileage on a vehicle so far is my wife's '98 4Runner, which she's had from new. It's almost to 280k and hasn't had anything mechanical break that I couldn't fix in the driveway in at least 15 years. If/when the engine finally goes I'm going to just rebuild it or replace it. Everything else works fine and a new motor would cost less than what I could trade in or sell the truck for.

In the summer we went on a road trip for a few days to the UK, 3,800km and no problems at all. Great car, so much fun to drive and so practical.

HEy Robert, I'm not mechanically inclined at all. But I use your videos as a source of information to follow up on my S70. I take it to my local Volvo dealer because I've found out that they usually come up with the same recommendations you mention, use original parts, and everytime I haggle a bit for price they always give me a discount. Mine is a 1998 with 143000 miles. I'm the second owner and it had 88000 miles when I bought it 3 yerars ago. Usually, in an average day, I put between 50 and 70 miles, except for Fridays that I always put close to 200 miles. I'm in Real Estate here in Ft Lauderdale, Fl and this car is ideal for realtor duty. I keep it washed and clean all the time and it has saved me a lot of $$$ in car payments. Great craftsmanship. I'm very happy with it. Keep up the good work. Regards.

Next couple of weeks projects: Deferential oil change, deferential breather change, transmission oil and filter change(no flush). After that clay, polish and wax.

Robert, on your advise I went out and got some Lucas Upper Cylinder Lubricant /Injection Cleaner. All I can say is HOLY COW!!!!! I had a blip in my idle I think due to carbon build up while I ran my car for five moths under temperature from a bad thermostat. I checked all my vacuum lines and replaced plugs. After putting the Lucas in my car runs like silk. It really is amazing stuff. I couldn't believe it. It counter acts bad gas also. I went out today and bought a gallon. I'm going to use it every other tank. Thanks for the tip. This is not just the injection cleaner. I am amazed.

This is an outstanding video and this gentleman really knows his stuff. I have a 2000 Mercury Villager with 149K on it. I plan to have it to 250K. I bought it at 95K. It runs and looks almost as new. Spent abut $1500 on body work to put the car back in new condition. I undercoated the car for rust. Rust prevention is extremely important in northern climates. I wash the car through the winter every week to keep the road salt off. All of the suggestions above have been done to my car and I constantly get compliments from people about how it looks and rides like new. Shocks, struts, alternator, AC compressor rebuild, cat converter and O2 sensors. Gas gauge fix. This is a very well presented video. Just look at the gentleman's car. It looks and I'm sure drives like new.

+Jay Gold Did you have your timing belt replaced?

    • @wyatt1153
      @wyatt1153 9 років тому

+Robert DIY Yes Robert. I actually had it done twice since 95K. The first tine it was done at Sears and it was done incorrectly at 120K. It broke at 145K and I had it done again correctly at a locally owned family shop that is known for it's excellent service. Fortunately my engine is non interference. One thing that I learned is that I let my thermostat go for a while and the car was not heating up to proper temperature. That along with a weak alternator caused my car to start running a little rough at idle I think due to carbon build up and lack of proper voltage. I didn't realize until I had both the thermostat and alternator replaced how important these basic parts are in an older car and how they can effect the computer. Once I replace the thermostat and the alternator which had a worn bearing and was making noise the car ran at normal operating temperature and voltage and smoothed out. It's interesting after you get over 120K how the basic parts on the car need to be replaced. When I got the van I immediately replaced the PCV valve as I smelled the tell tale oil smell that's so common with a stuck PCV valve. I change oil every 3000K. Put Amsoil 100K synth in the transmission. Brake fluid change. Wires, plugs, rotor, cap every 2 years. The car runs like new. The point here is that it's a LOT cheaper to maintain an older car in new condition than it is to buy a new one. My Villager pretty much looks like your car. I had the hood painted along with all spot rust taken off around the wheel wells and doors. I wash and Nu Coat (monthly) the car every week and inspect. Mechanics compliment me on the body and mechanics of the car. Brakes were done also. I have an alignment subscription and tire rotation at Sears and it is done every 6 months. I keep a service record. The good thing is that I know exactly what is in my car and what to expect. Mechanically I have the manual and am very familiar with the car. I painted and replaced my own door handle. The mechanics couldn't believe I did it myself. All hinges are sprayed with teflon lubricant. I am going up to Walmart right now and get some Lucas and put it in the car. Here in Buffalo the enemy is rust. I believe now that a car can easily get 250K if routinely and properly maintained if it is a good reliable design to begin with (important about reliable initial design like Volvo). Mine is a Nissan deign. Your videos are very informative and I can really relate to your mentality.

Cool. I'm going to finish detailing the exterior of my car so it looks better. A clean car usually gets treated better at the shop.

Love your videos Robert. I have a 1995 Volvo 850 sedan, tropical green metallic, only one small rust spot on the trunk lid, (no turbo) which has approx. 220,000 miles and running well. ( The odometer doesn't work so I got the mileage from the manual OBD under the hood a few months back). Love Volvo's 1999 and older, newer ones seem to have gone down hill quality wise, at least 2000-2005's. My son had a 2004 Volvo S60R, red, beautiful car and he did exactly what you said not to do. He ran it while it was overheating, kept putting regular water in it because it was summer, and warped the head. It only had around 235,000 miles on it and was in great condition. He sold it to someone who was going to do the head himself and he came and picked it up with a trailer. He sold it for $1,000. Hard, Hard lesson right there.

My wife drove a 2003 Toyota Corolla from zero to 187,000 miles when she wisely chose to total it during a snowstorm by driving it off the road to avoid oncoming traffic. It ended the life of a very reliable car that could have easily gone 50,000 miles or more. Recently I had fixed it up by replacing all hoses, the exhaust and cat, the alternator, the brakes, the plugs (twice), the front struts and front end links, so it was good to go a long ways.

2001 Volvo XC70 ash gold colour body on great shape with 315,000 km and still running strong. No check engine light on, last check engine light on was for emissions and I replaced j hose which turned off light. Currently looking to prolong life of car with possible spark plug replacements (replaced ignition coil at 205,000 km and spark plugs at 191,000km), timing belt replaced at 178,648km), new radiator. Only two issues are driving car in front wheel drive as drive axel was for all wheel drive was removed because of bevel gear failure, and loss of coolant every month have to top up coolant reservoir, though no signs of leaking in engine bay, so I’m thinking maybe somewhere I’m not able to see, ie timing belt housing, water pump, or plastic heater core inside car. Thanks Robert for all your great advice!!!

I have a 1998 Volvo s70. It has 206,300 miles. Currently I am doing lots of work to keep it going. It was purchased 2 years ago. Last year there was a terrible noise and people thought it was the water pump. I knew that was not the case. The engine breather box was cracked. A motor mount was installed. This year all types of front end work has been done: ball bearing, tie rods and a wheel alignment. Struts will be done next week and then timing belt and water pump changed. The list goes on. It is a good car however and I definitely would rather put money into it than getting another car with a note. Thanks Robert

It runs roughly at the moment because of the lack of maintaince, but when I'm done with it, it will be as good as new. Did the valve cover gaskets, spark plug seals, and spark plugs today,, tomorrow the timing belt, pulleys and water pump. Volvo v70. 1999. 2.4 liter Turbo engine, automatic, 193 HP. 373 thousand kilemeters on the clock. Since half a year tuned up to 265 HP. 25th of January 2020 while high speed driving got a tiny hole in the coolant tank return hose which caused a loss of pressure in the cooling system, sudden boiling of coolant, pressure spike and as a result a crack in the 20 year old plastic part of the radiator. Radiator and hoses replaced. Works again just like a charm.
I also replaced the whole audio system with some higher class and more modern stuff. Got a stainless 2.5 inch exhaust, some nice 18" rims. Separate for summer and winter tyres. For winter I've got BBS RX2 that are almost identical to some rims they used on those 850 BTCC cars.
Besides the wheels it's a complete sleeper.

My 2008 Sebring (convertible) will hit 100,000 by the end of September. I’ve had the alternator replaced, timing belt replaced, and transmission fluid change and of course new brakes and tires. The only “unexpected” repair was the transmission shift cable came loose, no biggie at all. It’ll get new tie rod ends by the end of 2018 and new shocks next year. Nothing has broken, thy have just degraded over the past 10 years. Everyone knocks Chrysler but if you follow the maintenance schedule you’re golden.

Great practical information. I totally agree with everything you said. Currently I have a 2000 Mercedes E320 wagon with 237,000 miles that's a daily driver and a 2003 Lexus ES300 with 244,000 miles that's just as tight as it was when we got it 10 years ago. The Lexus only had shocks, 2 starters, thermostat, 1 window regulator, relay for AC, CV axle, front wheel bearings, and vac line valve replaced besides normal wear maintenance items. The Benz had bushings, water pump, motor mounts, tranny under warranty, alternator brushers, wheel F bearings, window regulator, brake light switch, shocks, and drive shaft bushings that I can remember. They have both been solid cars but we do maintenance regularly. Looking to replace at 300k.

My car is 1996 Volvo 850 GLT with 225, 000 miles odometer stopped counting. I estimate it is has about 50,000 more miles. Thanks for the advices. It just passed the smog check in California and I want to keep driving it for at least 2 more years.

Good to hear that it is running good. Do get that odometer repaired as soon as possible. It is the key to scheduled maintenance.

You make things simple to understand and I appreciate it. I'm looking at a 1998 Volvo V70 GLT Wagon with 180000 miles and was hesitate with the miles, but loved the way it drove. Since I'm getting a good price I'll see about using the rest of the money towards replacing what you recommended to hopefully make it last a long while!

Your videos are REALLY AWESOME! You don't miss anything, and easy and clear to understand you talking. My kind of company/friend. Was wondering where you went to school for automotive. Do you have your own shop? Where do you live? I'm in Los Angeles. I have 2 cars right now.... 2001 Mercedes ML55 AMG with 230k miles and still running strong, but is leaking oil out rear main seal, and valve cover gaskets. One thing odd that happened this week was that check engine light came on but somehow miraculously, corrected itself to my surprise!

+Justman Friden No automotive school for me. No, I don't have a shop, just a shade tree mechanic. I live in Albuquerque NM, but I do travel a lot.

2002 Chevy Tahoe with a 5.3 motor. Over 216 thousand miles. I've replaced All 4 O2 sensors did an oil change replaced the Pistons on the rear hatch, replaced all the door handles, flushed the rear differential fluid and replaced the rear differential cover and Gasket and both of the mirrors. Now I just need tie rods and hubs. That'll be done by the end of the week :-) I plan on getting at least another hundred thousand out of this truck.
