There's a smiley little bastard who shows up again and again in the From Soft extended universe. Often a thief, always a traitor, but never really a threat, Patches is a perennial fan favourite for old fans of the franchise.
But is there more to him, at all, than his smiley betrayals and constant scamming? Does it MEAN anything to have him turn up in these games over and over again? Let's discuss.
Thank you to @Aranock and @Transparencyboo's Alicia for reading quotes for the analysis section!

I love the whole "all the games are actually connected". Because that means one thing. Of all the gods and deamons, dragons and undead, you can *always* count on Patches to be there, to kick you down a hole, and to take the piss with you when you inevitably forgive him.

the bit about the early modern (in this case, Shakespearean) archetype of the Fool made me go "oh THAT'S why he hates clerics in Dark Souls 1!"
I mean, it's also explained by "he's undead, so ofc he hates the cult of Lloyd, whose entire deal is killing all undead"
or by "he's an extremely unconvincing con man and petty thief, so he sees the Way of White as a guild of rich, socially accepted con men and envies their success"
but still! Calling him a fool (non-derogatory) fits. Patches as kicked dog who knows a boot when he smells one.

I'm personally of a mind that Patches' appearance in Dark Souls 3 was the perfect denouement for his character, but his story in Elden Ring makes for a fitting companion piece to it.
It really goes to show how his character was always that little more nuanced than just being a charismatic antagonist. We certainly got hints to that effect in earlier games, but there's a large enough body of work about him now, across all his various appearances to do a fuller character study on him, and I just love that.

This is the best series currently ongoing on UA-cam. It is genuinely a crime that all of these videos don’t crack over a million views apiece. The format of the long-form goofy past Skyen dicking around and exploring through one of my favorite games and discovering it for the first time, and the concise, thought-provoking analyses is a perfect match, and I can honestly say that these quite literally *make my day better* when I see that they are uploaded. Being able to consistently make me laugh and critically think is the hallmark of a great entertainer, in my opinion, and you do that every time. Your media literacy is just extremely refreshing, and I’m always shocked to hear what you glean from just a simple room or outfit- it’s thanks to you that I’ve realized how deliberate FromSoft is in their game design.
All of this to say- keep doing you, Skyen. I know these videos don’t get a lot of views, but that is most definitely not because of their quality. Thank you so much for continuing to make this series- I already can’t wait for the next video!

Oh my god calling back the Deja Vu meme song for the chariots here was the most hilariously extra edit, I really hope it continues throughout the rest of the series
    😂
The analysis for Patches was also really strangely heartwarming too, I never quite could put my finger on why the bastard was so endearing, but it makes so much sense after hearing your take on it. Referencing Miyazaki's experience that inspired the co-op system was really unexpected but I love how it really fits with the grander narrative that Patches is involved in.
It makes me wonder what Patches would be like, if he was given the chance or resources to actually accomplish the things that the player character is capable of across all the games. As someone bent and bruised but never broken by the system, his mind and methods are shaped by his circumstances just so that he could survive, until that's all he knew how to be. Despite that, I always felt a glimmer of good in Patches' character. Jumping off from your analysis, Patches always shoots his shot at screwing you over because to him, you're just another sap he can take advantage of, but the moment you get one over him, he instantly turns to begging and groveling- which, he'll usually reward you if you *continuously* forgive him. It's kind of like, after screwing you over SO MUCH, Patches starts taking pity on *you* and opens up a shop saying "All right, you may be strong, but you're stupid, and I can't have myself indebted to someone as stupid as you."
So I wonder, if the tables were turned and he wasn't the Everyman, the Fool, and he was given the opportunity to instead be different, be like you, be the white phantom- if he would take that opportunity, if given the chance.

    • @amiefortman7220
      @amiefortman7220 6 місяців тому +6

I don't know if Patches would do it for just anybody, honestly. Just judging by the fact that he looks like he *refuses* to customize himself, sticking with the same basic armor and spear-shield combo when he could have his pick from any fancy gear from the poor saps he's kicked down a hole, I feel like he makes a point *not* to get involved. Because why should he--why should he give any of the bastards in power that satisfaction? But if somebody were to earn his genuine respect, somebody who goes against his expectations for people to be greedy, cruel, and self-righteous...well, who knows?

"All just window dressing for a bunch of bastards stabbing each other in the back for money and power."
I genuinely hadn't thought about it that way before!
Because when you get down to brass tacks, the Shattering War is a succession crises. As Queen Marika was called 'The Eternal' I doubt there was ever a formal succession in place because why would an immortal God Queen need one? If there was a plan, Godwyn the Golden would most likely have been heir apparent. The result of her first marriage, Godwyn was by all accounts a pretty well liked and respected guy.
Except, he was assassinated. Then Marika disappeared and the Elden Ring shattered. So we now the Golden Order is facing a massive power vacuum and no clear heir. No precedent for what should happen next. The demigods could, theoretically, have sat down together and resolve things with diplomacy...but given that the Golden Order's default response to problems appears to be 'VIOLENCE' it's no real surprise that things devolved into a civil war that has broken and devastated the continent.
Love your boss designs series! Can't wait to see what other topic you delve into.

The slight detail that I enjoy to accentuate his whole persona is that no matter what, his weapons in every iteration is the lamest possible cowardly weapon combo in the game. In the soulsborne series, he uses a long range spear and the best shield in the game, basically playing a big turtle build. In Elden Ring he even takes some spellcasting with POISON of all things to be as much of a pest as possible and stall you out without much risk to himself. In Armored Core For Answer, he uses a basic missile system with some cheap but effective slow missiles to continue tracking you and push you OUT and keep YOU moving and a radar jammer to mess with your targeting systems, all while he uses some midrange laser rifle and a kinetic rifle in order to keep you at range while he kites you around the map. He's dead set in every game to just keep you at as much distance from him as possible and to mitigate the damage that gets to him.

I picked up Elden Ring during the Steam winter sale in no small part due to this series and just started NG+ today, and this episode in particular just gained a new level of irony for me. I have collected nearly every single armour set in the entire game, and finally, after much consideration, landed on what is my favourite chest armour piece. The Leather armor piece. Patches' armour set. I have travelled to every corner of the Lands Between, defeated every boss, yes even Malenia, Blade of Miquella herself. I have every ability to garb myself in nothing but legendary gear and be more fabulous than a glintstone peacock. And yet. What I choose, what my fashion sense is drawn to, is the, as you put it, uncustomised default of this pathetic little blorbo of a man. A damn shame I had to kill him for it, but Fashion Souls is Fashion Souls.

But particularly I wanted to thank you for your candour in regards to your ADHD diagnosis and the struggles you face therein. As someone who was diagnosed as a teen but only really tried to understand ADHD and how it effected my life in my 30s, it's really comforting to see someone who produces such great content be honest about their struggles. I know all to well the feeling of "why can't I just do this thing that everyone else seems to do so easily" and then the evasion/shame that follows. Elden Ring was my second Soulslike after Sekiro, so since I had none of the lore I ended up cleaving Patches’ head off with my trusty great axe. I did the same for similar characters who attacked me (such as the beast clergyman in Dragonbarrow), without giving them a chance even if they surrendered.
It’s amazing how much lore I missed, and how there are both in-depth game elements I glanced over, and how many small nods to past games (like the Greatmoon Sword) that I didn’t realize on my first play through years ago.
I still think Ishhin was way harder than Malenia though, and the final boss of Elden Ring was a spectacularly beautiful fight, but a bit of a letdown as a final boss.
Anyways, thanks for this amazing series, it’s really helping me see what I missed, and what I should look out for when I eventually return to this game.

i'm so happy to see another episode of this series!! lately i've been rewatching all of your soulsbourne content in the background while i deal with finals season, so it's fun to get a new episode. your comparison of Patches to a Shakespearian fool made me realize that I was always thinking of him as one because he shares a name with Game of Throne's Shakespearian fool. it's funny to think that the game where Patches gets a sidequest is the one with george rr martin as a writer.... lol anyway thanks for a great video as always!!

Hey, it's wonderful to see this live again! (And who better to celebrate it with than the man described as 'FromSoft royalty'?)

Also, the editing gags are wayyyy too high-effort, but I do love them nevertheless (or perhaps because of it).

The first time I encountered Agheel, the bastard landed right on top of me. It was such an epic entrance that I couldn't even be mad. 😅

Not to spoil, but Patches in Dark Souls 3 is the greatest, i truly feel like i formed a dramatic bond with him. You are at the end of the world, and is you, and this glorious Bastard Man, at your side.

Also on many occasions Patches says that he hates clerics... And yet he is a Cleric class in Elden Ring.

Patches is just so charming in his slimyness, personally I really enjoyed the Demon's Souls version of him but Skyen hasn't reached that point yet.

I really hope you follow up with Patches' story in the future, to get your analysis of the bastard. Perhaps pull in some details from Dark Souls 3 for a full character breakdown?
I'm playing a One Piece based D&D campaign, and Patches inspired my character, so I'm always happy to see him.

You went past the Urd tree guard dog and I get it, not much to talk about there but maybe it would be nice to do an episode with a couple mini reviews? Like a minute on the urd tree watch dog, an update on the Patches storyline, maybe any other quest lines you think deserve a bit of talking, or other little bosses you find. You could dump all the little leftover script tidbits into it once the series is done. It's just an idea, Regardless as always love the episode!

I was a giantsflame cleric on one of my ng+'s and threw a giantsflame take thee at his little alcove where he jumps off to attack you.
Ended up blowing him back to demons' souls and killing him. It was funny at the time. Found out you loot a spear from him.

holy shit, I can't remember if I made a similar comment on the last video, but I'm just starting this one and the fucking Commitment to the DeJa'Vu riff is SENDING ME it's my favorite thing. In my mind now, that thing just canonically makes that song as it goes along. This is the kind of shit I love about these videos. All the memes that arise from them.
Anyway, I'm so behind on these, I rly need to catch up.
