Such a gorgeous morning, that light was amazing as well, I loved the images you captured. You certainly get to your locations early enough, nice work. With all the filming and extra work required to capture the experience for these vlogs, it's a good idea to get there with plenty of time! 😀👍
Hi Andrew, I hope you're well. Many thanks for dropping by and your kind comments - I really appreciate them and your support 🙏🙏🙏 This is a bit of a fangirl moment for me! 😅 It's a huge learning curve and having extra time out there, especially when the light is changing so rapidly, is something I definitely need! I'm sure you know all about the multi-tasking scramble! Looking forward to your next video 😊
Thanks you Ross for your comments 🙏🙏 I think sunrise is my favourite time to shoot and dealing with the rapidly changing light is always a challenge! But always a great way to start the day 😊
Thanks a lot Douglas for your feedback 🙏 I think that image is my fave too 🙂 Haha that pup was a little cutie and playful fella - he added to the enjoyable morning!
Thank you for this one Valerie ETTR exposure to the right is what I do 90% of the time. Nicely crafted images. Thank you for bringing this one to us. Sniper Photography
Thanks Glenn !🙏 I've just recently focused on ETTR more and I do prefer it. I hope you got a chance to watch the video in HD quality, as it was still processing when I first published, so apologies for the initial bad quality! Much better now 😊
What a beautiful morning! It’s funny how we can witness such gorgeous light and colour, yet as images, mono delivers a better payoff. As you were moving through the shoot, I found myself loving the mono images the most, and the collection at the end only emphasised that. Lovely work, Valerie. Really lovely.
Hi Peter, it is a bit ironic, isn't it? Mono has a special ability to create a mood or feel that just seems to work so easily for a lot of scenes and lighting conditions. It does make it hard to choose between colour and mono sometimes! Am definitely enjoying experimenting with mono more. I'm glad you enjoyed them and really appreciate your thoughts and comments as always! 🙏🙏🙏
@@ValerieMisaPhotography Very. I can totally understand why some photographers shot mono almost exclusively. When you consider we have form, texture, and light direction/quality/intensity to work with; colour almost becomes an unwelcome distraction.
I’m a big fan of having a foreground point of interest, so 19:33. But they’re all very nice, and definitely inspire me to get out and see what I can do with the local San Diego landscape.
Thanks Michael, great to hear your preference and appreciate your comments! 🙏 Glad you enjoyed the video and definitely get out there to see what you can capture!
Hey Valerie. Regarding your comment regarding apps not accommodating the inclusion of polarizers when calculating your shutter speed, I have a bit of a work around. I will attach my polarizer first, then set my aperture and shutter speed for the correct exposure. I then decide which ND filter I want to use. I will use the values WITH the polarizer attached when I consult the long exposure app to determine the shutter speed. This way, the polarizer is accounted for in my final shutter speed with both filters. Hope that helps! Great video by the way! Cheers!
Hi Brett, hope you're well 😊 That's a really helpful, practical and simple workaround!! Brilliant - always learning something new every day! Really appreciate the tip Brett, and thanks for your feedback! 🙏🙏🙏
Hi Colin, really appreciate your comments 🙏🙏 It was great to finally get some jetty long exposures. Fairly simple subjects, but as you know, they can be so unique.
Thanks ZJ for your comments and am glad you enjoyed the vid and got value out of it - that's my job half done 😊 Just dropped by your channel - some great time lapses you've got there! You've got a new sub and I hope you're enjoying the YT journey so far. Keep up the good work! 👊
Again, nicely done Valerie. I can see you’re getting more comfortable and confident in front of the camera each video. It’s something I’m hoping to improve upon myself in my videos. I particularly like that last shot and in BW. Well done!
Many thanks Shaun, really appreciate your feedback and comments 🙏🙏 As you would know, it's definitely quite a learning process! Your videos are going from strength to strength, and to me, you seem at ease in front of the camera 🙂 Keep enjoying the journey!
So very beautiful Valerie!! I love the early morning, so peaceful, and a great way to start the day with a photo adventure!! All the shots were fantastic and the boat house was my favorite! Was that Venus or Jupiter in your first shot? I’m guessing Venus because it was so bright. Looking forward to Part 2!!
Hello Barry, I hope you're well 🙂 I love the peace that comes with really mornings too. I don't know enough about the stars/planets to be honest (terrible, I know)! But it was quite bright, so I think you're right - must have been Venus. There was also another bright star or planet on the top right of that photo, any idea what that could have been? Really glad you enjoyed it and as always, thanks so much for your comments!! 🙏🙏🙏
@@ValerieMisaPhotography I missed the one in the upper right, had to go back and look🤔. I believe the upper right is Jupiter and the other is Venus. I could be totally off, but it’s my best guess😀!
i prefer sunrise over sunset also. i have seen some incredible sunrise photos at Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming and am making plans to take sunrise shots of my own there.
Hi John, from all the photos I've seen, that's an amazing location for sunrise photography. So many possibilities! You'll have a fantastic time there! 👍🙂
Great work Val, your videos and photography just gets better and better! Loved the light and airy image at 15.30 (and that is not like me as I usually prefer dark and moody) 😂 I can’t wait to see how you do with old Dragon Rock 🙏🙏🙏
Hello Izzy, thanks a bunch!! Always appreciate you dropping by and your encouraging comments! 🙏🙏 On reflection, I think that photo is my also favourite - haha I feel privileged that you're persuaded to like it 😅 You capture dark and moody so very well! Ah... So you're familiar with Dragon Head! Oh, I was kicking myself I couldn't be there at the ideal time... But it was so lovely being out there at low tide 😊
@@ValerieMisaPhotography one of my videos is at dragon rock (Taming the Dragons Breath it’s called 🤣) I needed very little enticing to enjoy that images 🙏🙏🙏
I believe your definition of Fine Art Photography is correct. I didn't get it at first because to me it was just a photo done differently. But I guess it could be long exposure, low/high key, negative space, etc. = done tastefully. + to be interpreted by the creator/viewer to their liking. One of things that helped me come to this conclusion was viewing photos contest entries from a you tube channel that specializes in African photo safaris. Great vid. Will look for the next.
Hi Thomas, I hope you're well. I didn't get it at first either! A simple way for me to think about it now is: show what I want to see, not what I see... In moderation, of course 😄 That African safari YT channel sounds really interesting - do you mind sharing the link? I've always been fascinated by the African wildlife and landscape and would love to follow it. Always great to read your comments and really appreciate your feedback! 🙏🙏🙏
@@ValerieMisaPhotography Thanks for the reply & yes of coarse, it’s your photos. The YT channel is Pangolin Wildlife Photography. If your into wildlife photography also, all their vids are good. But some really nice photos are in some of there photo contest. Their latest photo contenders is a pretty good example. I believe they have a couple of high key / low key photo vids also. Happy shooting.

Lovely photos! As a fellow sunrise chaser, I love watching your process, and thank you so much for sharing. May you share what your POV camera is / camera you are using to capture your behind-the-scenes please?
Thank you Justin for your comments! 🙏 I do love a good sunrise shoot! I film my videos mainly with my Go Pro Hero 9, and my drone shots are taken on my DJI Air 2S 🙂
Great video Valerie! ❤ Do you set your focus to manual before you take your shot once you set it in auto? I find doing that prevents the lens from auto focus hunting during a long exposure.
Hi Rich, great point and I agree - I find focusing manually is much better for long exposures. ND filters can be too dark for the camera to find focus in auto. My camera has a setting which allows me, while in manual focus mode, to quickly auto focus by tapping my screen, and then I can manually fine tune my focus as needed without having to switch. Makes my life a bit easier! Many thanks for your comments and glad that you enjoyed the vid! 🙏🙏
Great piccies, Val!!! I'm a bit of a funny photographer. I break the "rules" all the time. I don't stick by them unless I feel they add to the picture I'm taking. And, when I take a piccie, I tend to take a pic of what's there, not what I'd like to be there. I don't look to "delete" or "add" anything to an image to enhance it when I'm taking an image. It is what it is. That's not to say that I don't like a well composed image but I'm not looking for balance or the right number of elements in an image. I don't mind doing post processing on an image, but I won't overdo or go too far in making too many changes. Otherwise, it's not the image I took. It's not representing what I saw when I was out taking my shots. But, that's me and my own mileage. It varies for everyone. As for mornings, I've never been much of a morning person. I could get up maybe a few times to get a sunrise shot, but I'm more of a night owl :) That's why I'm an astronomer :) Fine art...that's very subjective. It can mean many things to many people. It is what you make of it. I like long exposure pics but there are many that don't. Even within the photography community. Each to their own.
Hi Carl, hope you're well. I don't think breaking the "rules" is a bad thing at all - they are really just guidelines after all. You see the world through your lens and reflect it your way - that's what makes each image so unique 😊 It sounds like you're more of a realist photographer (I'm not sure if I'm making this up haha) - you show what you see, and not what you want to see. I'm a fence sitter on this one 😄 as I do like a good balance of both! I'm guessing your prefer astrophotography? I'd love to do more of that for sure. I find it interesting that there are photographers who don't like long exposures... Some intriguing conversations to be had there! Fine art is very subjective isn't it? But I guess so too is photography generally. I think the challenge with fine art is always the execution! Always enjoy hearing/reading your thoughts very much Carl, and thanks for your comments! 😊🙏🙏🙏
