I remember when I first wanted to sprite in this style, and I never found a guide, except for Luke's and it was pretty helpful but I needed more, luckily people like Pia and Caos-Cepi are basically my teachers. Glad to finally see someone talented has made a video guide so future generations can learn visually and easily, good job dude.
Glad you like it! It's good to have someone to pass on the torch. I learned most of what I know from observing Solo993 and star-shaper.
Agreed; and from someone who is very clearly aware of the fundamentals of pixel art and knows how to teach in a direct, concise manner, too! Any time I try to teach someone something, it comes out as a big rambling infodump LOL

I just want you to know, this is the most solid and thorough guide for the GSC style I've come across thus far! I totally have been suggesting this to friends that are interested in the style ❤️ also thank you for giving the general size dimensions for different pokemon sizes, because I love knowing how to make things more uniform and idk if you figured out on your own that small / medium / large pokemon tend to follow their own size limits separately, but I REALLY appreciate you disclosing that because that's gonna help me a lot with helping out my bf's lil pokemon gsc style game project he's working on!

I just decided to start spriting after years of being a hand-draw it always guy and I felt overwhelmed with current spriting. This however, is amazing and will definitely help to ease me into this wonderful retro craft. I'm already a big fan of your videos and they are definitely fun and informative to watch. Keep doing you dude. Also would you ever do a series on Gen 3 spriting? I know it might not be your forte, but it's the generation where sprites really took off and is a huge inspiration for me artistically.

This is such a great tutorial everything is easy to understand, well labeled and you even provide examples I've always had a deep appreciation for gen 1 and 2 graphics this video just makes me appreciate them more thanks for making this video!

Thank you so much for this tutorial, I've been able to devamp GBA sprites into RBY shading style. Without this video I never would have been able to sprite properly
There is an extra thing you can do to make the boxes and sprites easier and it's the grid you can set the background to a grid the fully zoom in and use the smallest line setting wich is on pixel thick and boom

The GBC uses 15-bit RGB colors. If you look that up you can color pick from any of it

This video was really fun to watch and helpfull too. But there is something. can you make a pokemon game in a gen 2 fashion in RPG maker? if not how should i go on doing so?
welp used 2 hours on finding this out myself. im gonna credit you once my game is finished man. you got me into this!
I don't know much about RPG maker but I'm sure tons of other people do (Pokemon Essentials right?). It'll be cool to see what you come up with :D
its fairly trash, and theres a lot of quirks in the Essentials GS kit that make it not very accurate to the engine its trying to replicate. Not to mention once you add your soundtracks it will bloat the game to like 300MB+ as opposed to a 2MB ROM.
The original engine is kinda trash. you cant even run in it. i kinda only wanted to replicate the style anyway. And the MB thing i dont really care about. but thanks anyway.
Running is easily implemented. Just saying most will look right past an RPG Maker project in the gen 2 community because we've all been there and done that.

I have a question and I hope you can help me. My question is if I made a sprite like this but my own monster/creature can I use it for my personal use( like for a game or sell the art I create on my own)? Does Pokemon own the rights making sprites like this with two tone color with black and white? Or is this just a art style? I just don't want to get sued or in trouble lol.
The sprite stuff is an art style, not a product in of itself. I’m sure you can draw/sell art commissions and such. Where you’d run into trouble is if you make a game using actual Pokémon assets like their codes/characters/designs/names.

Example can I make a character name and call him Blue? But it will be a different character design? Will that be okay? Character will be boy or girl.
@@Coolangel214 I’m not too well versed on copyright/trademark law myself, but I think it’s a broad enough name. I’d look into it further from an official source if you’re planning on a commercial release

The tutorial itself is wonderful but the flute sound is amplified so loudly relative to your voice it's a bit hard to watch without being shocked by the sudden pitch.

I wanted to make sprites of Latios/Latias and put them in Crystal version so i can catch them. Is this possible to do?
Yeah. If you look around, there are some sprite demakes of Latios Latias already made for gen 2. You just have to put them in as PNG

Probably pink and green, swap out yellow for pink-white dithering, blue for either green or black (probably)

Like attacks and stuff? For the Pokémon themselves, I haven’t even started yet, but for animations I’ll give it a try once I get free time
Substitube I’m making two card games and one wouldn’t have been possible without this video. I’m in poor health with no income but one day I’ll succeed in my creative endeavors I just know it! And I meant battle animations but regular animations like you’d see in crystal are also something I’m curious about. You have a lot of talent and a great personality!

do you know where i could get the color pallete for the sprites in gen 2 games?
you could just sample some directly from existing sprites.
What I do nowadays is choose approximately the color I want, then round each RGB values to be divisible by 8 (i.e. Red = 84 would round down to 80 or up to 88)

The most important thing to remember: While Gen 1 and 2 have a lot of terrible sprites in-game, that's not an excuse to make pixel art that's just bad if you're doing a ROM hacking project. This sounds harsh for sure but the number of times I've seen a poorly proportioned (or badly posed, etc) pixel artwork and the whole reason given for it to look Like that is because the creator thought they were "imitating the style" of Gen 2 when the style of Gen 2 is "everything's either pretty well done or total garbage, no in-between" One should always challenge themself to do better than some random devs from the 90s in their art quality lol
Very true. Many of the off-model sprites are simply a byproduct of being made before the official art, not made intentionally bad like some re-creations

@@mcmuffinbooper2333 For some of my early trainer sprites, I took parts of existing trainers and mashed them up. Cut the legs off a trainer here, paste the hands of another there. Somehow it all works out in the end.

I mean just breathe balance the insane amouth of pokemons we already have ... nerf the broken ones and give steroids on the pathetic ones, typing balance,habilities, stats... I mean there Is soo much things to do to make the game even more interesting but they keep spamming pokemons....I dont know man...

You could try just doing individual steps for fun instead of tackling an entire sprite.
Doodle a bunch of lines or circles following the guide, or use the shading process on a bunch of squares until you're comfortable
@@Substitube The problem is actually that I don't have any sense of spatial thinkg xD A friend of mine drew an early bug type for my region project and I tried to the copy it. Well... the caterpillar transformed into a duck when I was drawing it xD I always had this problem, even in school. I also don't understand how people are drawing with those lines for faces etc (no idea what they called in englisch). Tried it multiple times and I efed up even more.
As Ms paint wasn't advanced enough 😓
