If I'm being honest, this isn't my best sprite work. I've been working more in the Gen 2 style lately so I'm a bit rusty on the Gen 5 style. But I think it does the job and gets the stylistic elements across.
We forgive you. Your such an underrated youtuber. Its obvious that you do your research, and share your opinions in a clear and concise matter, and yet you dont have as many followers as other poketubers. Funny how that works, isnt it?
@@UmbreonLibris I honestly forgot that I asked you this to be honest. 😣 And due an act of carelessness on my part I haven't been able to draw on my laptop. Not at least not until I can find someone to fix my drawing tablet. Or have enough money to buy another one. But I think I was hoping to see if you had any advice on how to make regional forms, say for past regions? Like in Hoenn what if the Grimer and Koffing lines were all part fire type? Of the Vulpix became ghost type? Side note: Have you heard about that site with the Pokemon generator that uses an AI? Nokemon something? It makes some pretty crazy fakemons.
Even tho I'm not an artist myself, your series on spriting is some of your most interesting content. It's really amazing to see these techniques and styles and how they affect the outcome of the sprite, what gen it fits in for example.
I think you forgot (i guess) to mention is the fact the sprites from all 2D generations had another limitation about what colors you really could use. They all have a limitation you can see better on sprites taken with no palette fixing conf. on emulator (or sort of). Sprites all in these generations could only use colors where they had to be divisible by 8, so, the minimum you could use was between #000000 (black) and the maximum #F8F8F8 (white). It is not that noticeable when the sprites between generations are more and more better colored, but, you can notice when seeing their hexadecimal values on the colors. This is also why some generation 2 games had some sprites that if so not related, they accidentally has the same color on one of the two available space for the palette. Thanks for my uninteresting talk, it was just a detail I thought it was important for technical thinks (such as turn the Sprite for the real hardware).
I actually block out my animation before I draw the sprite, so I draw the design on a digital art program and then I get the proportions right using wire frames in pixel art and then I animate that wire frame and then I go to the first frame and draw the pokemon in sprite form and then I fill out the rest
Been waiting for this episode! Didn't know that the animations were broken up to make things easier, that's really cool. Do you think you'll do an episode making a sprite of yourself as a trainer, or is the pixel art finished with now?
Funnily enough I did something simlar when doing gen 5 sprite art without even realizing the same technique was used in the actual game (this was before I knew that a sprite sheet on Spriters Resource is not necessarily how the data is stored in the ROM)
I have made a trainer sprite of myself before, haha. But I don't think there's much reason to cover trainer sprites specifically since the styles and techniques match the Pokémon sprites pretty closely. This is the last _planned_ episode to cover pixel art, but after the next episode I'm open to suggestions for other more specific styles y'all want to learn about.
i think i understand everything, im not animating the sprites but i have a hard time shifting the colors in the outline to make it look more official, it either comes out so colorful it looks stupid or not enough where it just looks black, are there any good techniques i can use?
Little nitpick here I wanted to point out, but you made an error with displaying an example of a Gen 5 Sprite at 6:11 as you used Tangrowth's sprite in Platinum and not its sprite in Gen 5, where its Gen 5 sprites has its arms down and is standing as opposed to being slouched over and having one arm up like in the Platinum sprite
Do you do commission sprite work? Im thinking about making a fan game but i am artisticly challenged lol. Im just curious how much front, back, and icons sprites would run without animation.
The fact that animated sprites indeed need more neutral poses to look natural makes me especially mad that BW didn't keep the HGSS sprites for Raikou, Entei, and Suicune 😬
I'm not sure what you mean. The BW sprites for Raikou and Suicune look pretty similar to the HGSS sprites. Entei is the only one that looks more like Platinum.
@@UmbreonLibris Shuckles (this is definately wrong), Kecleon, Klink, Xatu, I have no idea at all, Ekans, Chinchou, Roggenrola (I was also not completely sure about the Kecleon)
That wouldn't really fit the point of this series. I don't know anything about 3D modelling, but maybe one day I can get a guest on to do an episode about Pokémon models.
That's a great question, but I'm not the best person to answer it. Throughout my pixel art career, I have only ever used the Windows XP version of Paint, and Photoshop. Paint was super simple and easy enough to use, but it didn't support transparency or animation. Photoshop can do it all and soooo much more, it often gets in its own way. I'm used to Photoshop by now, but I also know it isn't ideal. I don't have any experience with it myself, but if you are looking to start out, I would suggest you try something that is designed for pixel art, since it would be the smoothest experience. This guide might help: conceptartempire.com/pixel-art-software/
@@UmbreonLibris Thank you for the recommendation. I think I will try using photoshop, but I really want to make gen 4 style sprites for my own fakemon and this should be a perfect guide :)
Yeah, I'd seen Charizard's FRLG sprite first, which was way better, probably my favourite appearance of the Pokémon, so when I saw it RS sprite I was like "ew" and then it went back to that sprite in Emerald 🤢

i have a question, will you be making a model for Slotter (did i spell that right) but instead of just being them, it's a mega?
I don't know enough about 3D modelling to teach it, so whether I do an episode on that will depend on finding the right guest lecturer.

A bit of a newbie, but looking around, what is the actual canvas size that is utilized for the gen 4 sprites?

Which tool to use for drawing not colouring
I use the same tool for everything in pixel art: the Pencil tool in Photoshop.
