We use an interior latex semi-gloss. Just about any type of paint can be used. You can always "test" the paint you want to use on the box that the kit is shipped in.

Can you prime the soundbox to help make it sturdier?

You sure can! It's actually recommended...a coat or 2 on both the inside and out are very useful. A coat of Polyurethane helps seal it even better..
