    Tiny easter egg I noticed: Quinta's character said that they'd be paid if they made it to 2 minutes. The song starts at 1:57, and the angry audience member approaches them at 3:57, exactly 2 minutes into the performance.

    • @curtismcdonald6838
      @curtismcdonald6838 2 дні тому +4

      This is not mocking you in any way. I’m just very impressed with the message behind this “happy” song and seeing how talented Gambino is, I always wanna know more. Was this just an observation or is there some significance behind the 2 minutes mark of the song or the time 3:57?

    • @lollysmolly13
      @lollysmolly13 2 дні тому +15

      @@curtismcdonald6838 Once it gets bloody (3:57), the apathetic and aloof crowd all of a sudden starts to get engaged and dances along with them as if they just want to see them dance (uncritically and blindly consuming the mass media), not hearing them (proactively listening to the message and narrative behind it and be in control of what they are exposed to)

    • @funnymime123
      @funnymime123 2 дні тому +39

      To me, the central meaning is that the performance venue never had any intention of paying Johnny and the Pipes, or any artist for that matter. The industry offers an elusive promise of wealth to artists of color, but churns them through a vicious cycle of ridicule, apathy, and violence. Look at young deceased rappers like Pop Smoke, XXX, Tupac, and Biggie. They started to gain access to generational wealth, but were killed before they got the chance to actually use it. It’s why Quinta doesn’t let them read the contract in the beginning. They’re screwed from the start.

    • @curtismcdonald6838
      @curtismcdonald6838 2 дні тому +8

      @@funnymime123 Until I saw this video, I never even considered this fact. And when I think back to Tupac and Biggie, not one record producer, black or white, got up and made any attempts to quell the feud. Too profitable.

    • @r3konllama
      @r3konllama День тому

      @@curtismcdonald6838 I think you're missing a key aspect of that generation compared to now. They weren't rappers first. The only reason we settle beef with lyrics and bars is because we lost a lot promising stars to violence. It wasn't the money the started the beef, it wasn't the money that caused the deaths. It'd be much more profitable to keep some of the best names in rap alive. Other motives lead to their deaths.

    on the surface it sounds like a simple fun pop song, in reality its a cry for help from the perspective of a young black male that didn't have a proper father figure and had to fend for himself through street activity. On the surface the video looks like a goofy lighthearted showcase of choreography but in reality it's a black mirror-esque social commentary on how we only care about talented black artists if there's tragedy and trauma involved.

    I feel like I’ve been listening to music for a thousand years. Every five or ten years everyone goes mad saying someone is an absolute genius who has managed by chance to put their finger on the zeitgeist of their moment. This guys finger is never on his moment, it spans a universality that has to mean something to everyone who listens and ought to compel them to be better or answer should they feel they can’t. Imagine if he had been painting chapel ceilings in the renaissance! They’d have hidden shapes of anatomical discoveries amongst subversive images that contradict the orthodoxy of the person that commissioned the painting. Genuine genius holds a mirror to us (the zeitgeist touchers) while also showing us a route from the past to a more reasonable future. That’s why there are so few geniuses as most gifted people can’t do both. I hate agreeing with people and I almost exclusively like punk music but people need to watch this person and listen to his words.

      @haladitheory Not bad... hoping to see you again in the future after some growth. Get a new producer and learn to mix it yourself because i see the inspiration of ASAP and maybe bino since you're here but for example the chorus isn't really good. Keep going though bro, Kendrick, Gambino, and all the greats have 1000's of throw aways before they got to where they are. Kanye spent summers and you should too.

      I took it as anticipation expecting the performers to get shot any minute because every move was slightly off beat and over the top enough to be tonally dissonant for the setting, like they're being popy in the wrong place so everyone is wondering who's gonna do it to em. The fact that the singer was the one to pop the guy is hilarious cause they were expecting goofy ahh homeboy with the minstrel act to get shot but subverted expectations and he just rolled with it.
      Whats interesting about before he roles with it is his posture. Even though it was an accident his posture is firm forward anxious expecting an altercation as opposed as what would be the expected timid anxious response. Form there even his moves are looser, like with that action the crowd can now allow themselves to be pulled into the show
