what this song is REALLY about is revealed through the video, at least IMO. Just the lyrics alone don't properly convey it. "This is America" was the same way. It's a very Childish Gambino process for making hip-hop: *the track is cool but the video adds a whole new layer.* Personally, I feel like with this video he's trying to convey a metaphysical narrative similar to Andy Weir's short story "The Egg", where... Well, no spoilers. But if you read it (or look up a video about it), you'll see what I mean.

This is the GOOD MUSIC of 2010s. This song is so good that kids in the next generation will be talking about how they wish they were born when we were to experience our GOOD music.
I don't know why, but the ending scene where everyone is doing strange dances out in the forest sends chills up my spine. I love the music, but the combination of everything gives it a dreamlike quality that's really scary to me. I feel like they're on the verge of summoning something capable of ending the world.
gotta say, it always reminds me of the scarecrow crucifixions in Bowie's Black Star. Same unnerving feeling of seeing some type of inherently human activity far from the expected human or social settings.
He wrote a fake script for The Simpsons that someone liked so much that they hired him to write for 30 Rock. Which led to him getting acting roles like Community. Which in turn opened up exposure for him to start rapping and doing stand up. Then he gets his own TV show that wins the Golden Globe for best new comedy. And now he is playing Lando in the Star Wars prequels. Pretty amazing.
to me, this song is the ultimate show of musical talent. it shows a nice beat and flow, shows off that childish gambino is amazing at lyrical rapping (and is quick at it, too.) at the end he shows some insane singing, and most of all the song tells an amazing story about donald glover and some of the things he's dealt with in his life, from jealousy to his own insecurities. i loved this song when it came out, and now i love it infinitely more. oh, and it makes some pretty funny remarks, which is cool.
I'm really trying to listen to this song analytically and appreciate all the nuances... But I'm just so distracted by how freaking handsome this guy is

Underrated track, but I think that may be because a lot of people don't understand "because the internet" is a concept album so all of the tracks need to be listened to chronologically and in the proper context. It's not an album that is a collection of random songs designed to be singles or pop hits - each song has a purpose and is part of a larger point trying to be made.

The ending is so very beautiful, I feel like my soul just floats through time and space when he sings like that 🦋🦋🦋
I'm convinced to this day Gambino is the only rapper to use onomatopoeia in a rap song.
EDIT: I do mean the word not the technique. Also thanks for the love yall
Love it
You mean that he said the word or he used the technique?
how did he do dat
Gun sounds, skirt, etc. is onomatopoeia.
Every time a rapper says "BRAAPP" in an ad lib it counts
*Fiskers don't make noise when they start up, just so you know.*
*Are you eatin' tho?*
Ye
Too bad they're defunct so they really don't make noise anymore

Niclacoste but we got to admit community was better
He is dang near untouchable in the industry.....
I agree a hundred percent! I STAN!
I don't know why, but the ending scene where everyone is doing strange dances out in the forest sends chills up my spine. I love the music, but the combination of everything gives it a dreamlike quality that's really scary to me. I feel like they're on the verge of summoning something capable of ending the world.

This is America happened after after so the feeling is appropriate

gotta say, it always reminds me of the scarecrow crucifixions in Bowie's Black Star. Same unnerving feeling of seeing some type of inherently human activity far from the expected human or social settings.

Carlos Conde73 pretty sure it's common knowledge
He wrote a fake script for The Simpsons that someone liked so much that they hired him to write for 30 Rock. Which led to him getting acting roles like Community. Which in turn opened up exposure for him to start rapping and doing stand up. Then he gets his own TV show that wins the Golden Globe for best new comedy. And now he is playing Lando in the Star Wars prequels. Pretty amazing.
Damn. At first thought you were joking with the Star Wars thing. This guy is a jack of all trades.
And now he's co-writing and co-producing with his brother on a Deadpool animated series for FX. Dude just doesn't quit.
He's also simba in the live action lion king so I mean he's going crazy
And he was in the new Spider-Man, his first pretty amazing
He was doing comedy and rap long before Community.
Still my favorite track from him till this day
to me, this song is the ultimate show of musical talent. it shows a nice beat and flow, shows off that childish gambino is amazing at lyrical rapping (and is quick at it, too.) at the end he shows some insane singing, and most of all the song tells an amazing story about donald glover and some of the things he's dealt with in his life, from jealousy to his own insecurities. i loved this song when it came out, and now i love it infinitely more. oh, and it makes some pretty funny remarks, which is cool.
omg RONNY

in a room full of others, often you find that really your alone. and at times when it should just be you, there will be other people, there, living the same surreal moment with you, sharing those experiences you thought only you had.
that's how i interpret the video anyway
Underrated track, but I think that may be because a lot of people don't understand "because the internet" is a concept album so all of the tracks need to be listened to chronologically and in the proper context. It's not an album that is a collection of random songs designed to be singles or pop hits - each song has a purpose and is part of a larger point trying to be made.
i love them individually hahah i didn't know there was a chronological order :o
This is why I love that album so much
like a predecessor to igor
I just realized this music video and the Sober music video were connected, I'm just trying to figure out what the meaning of it all is.
Thanks for saying that.
What's the album?
"Ya you got some silverware but really... Are you eatin tho? Are you eatin tho? Nigga, are you eatin tho? Breakfast, lunch n dinner is for beginners y'all ain't even know" niggas got some seriously flow
Anthony Movius "got some seriously flow" It's a flow of shit, the fucking worst shit ever.
Lord SatanX "hate hate hate hate hate! I don't even know you and I hate your guts! I hope all the bad things in life happen to you and only you" -every other fucking person on UA-cam- including you.
Wow, you really are pissed man. My bad, didn't mean to start a UA-cam war. You act like you know me because of one comment I made on fucking UA-cam, seriously? And then you're going to write me an in depth, deep reply to a joke about something that really has no relevance in either of our lives? Fuck off.
And your name, lord Satan? Who is the intellectual? Think before you speak devil worshipper haha my god.
Lord SatanX Damn... I didn't realize you are still going. Hate hate hate hate hate hate. That's all you are. One big sack of hate. Lighten the fuck up. I'm sure you don't have many friends.
