බහිරව යනු භූමියට අධිගෘහිත යක්ෂ බලවේගයක් යන්න මතයකි. 11 වන ශත වර්ෂයේ ලියැවුණු , බෝධි වංශයට අනුව ද බහිරව යනු බිහය ජනක යන අදහසයි. 12 වන සියවසේ දී මෙම පදය ගුරු ළුගෝමීන් , ධර්මප්‍රදීපීකාව බහිරව වරුන් ගණනාවකි. මහා බහිරව , කෘෘර බහිරව , හැඩ බහිරව , කාල බහිරව , නාග බහිරව , සංඛ බහිරව , පද්ම බහිරව යානා දී වශයෙන් හදුන්වන්නේ ඉන් කිහිපදෙනෙකු පමණි. ඉතිහාස මුලාශ්‍ර අනුව බහිරව උපත ලෝකෝත්පත්තිය දක්වා දිවෙයි.

මහා භාරතය වැනි ග්‍රන්ථවලට අනුව කුවේර ‘පුලස්ති’ නම් ඍෂිවරයාගේ පුත‍්‍රයෙකි. තවත් ඇතැම් ග්‍රන්ථවලට අනුව ඔහු විශ‍්‍රවස්ගේ පුත්‍රයෙකි. විශ‍්‍රවස් රාවණගේ ද පියා යයි ද ඇතැම් තැනක සඳහන් ය. එසේ වන්නේ වී නම් කුවේර රාවණගේ සහෝදරයකු විය යුතු ය. එහෙත් මෙකියන කරුණු පැහැදිලි නොවේ. කෙසේ වෙතත් කුවේර විශ‍්‍රවස්ගේ පුතු බැවින් ඔහු ‘වෛශ්‍රවණ’ යන නමින් හැඳින්වේ. පාලියෙන් ඔහු ‘වෙස්සවණ’ ය. සිංහලෙන් කුවේර යන නමට අමතරව ‘වෙසමුණි’ යන නම ද යෙදේ. අපේ ගැමියන් වෙසමුණි රජ්ජුරුවො හා වෙසමුණියා යන නම්වලින් හඳුන්වන්නේ කුවේරයා ය.
