To me, Seel/Dewgong are fine, but I’m more of a Spheal/Sealeo/Walrein guy. Speaking of which, I wonder if we’ll be getting Walrein in the upcoming weeks.🙏
I mean, yes, a Pokemon is literally that Pokemon. The only time it isn't is if it's a Ditto, Mew, or Zorua in disguise. Cheeky jokes aside, if Dewgong is meant to be an actual dugong, then it does an _awful_ job at it. It has absolutely zero traits signature to a dugong ( or any of its close relatives, for that matter ) and really just looks like a lithe ( aka, the exact opposite of a dugong ) seal with fins instead of flippers. It might get its name from the dugong, even in Japanese, but it really doesn't seem like it's because it took any inspiration from dugongs at all - gotta remember that a lot of gen 1 Pokemon names in Japan were just English words or slight corruptions of them, so chances are they just named it after a semi-obscure marine mammal because they thought it sounded cool.
@@hi-i-am-atan Yeah, you're right, it looks NOTHING like a dugong (a fat, gray manatee relative with a dolphin tail). Seel and Dewdong are both harp seals.
I once came up with an idea for a regional form of Dewgong, that would be Water/Fire and have Thick Fat, Flash Fire, and Solar Power as possible abilities. But since its stats would be unchanged, I don't know how this would change its competitive viability, as this form's still losing 25% to Stealth Rock each switch-in. At least it's now 8× resistant to both Fire and Ice with Thick Fat! ^^;
Dewgong had potential. That's all I can say. It just never lived up to it. It should at least be given swift swim as an ability, slap on the heavy-duty boots item, and give it a status ability like hypnosis at least (I feel like that's something that it would make sense for it to learn), or a set-up move like calm mind, and he could be playable as a late-game sweeper. Maybe not in OU, but in another higher tier like UU or RU. It would get it out of PU at least.
Ah...I still remember "Sailor"; the Seel you got by trading in Cinnabar Island. That blighter was my first consistently used Water-Type, and the one who lead my team to victory in my first Link Battle against my friend. Froze his Level 100 Mewtwo, and kept firing away with Ice Beam until I notched up the win. A great fond memory for me and Pokémon. Sailor was Level 88 to boot.
Dewgong is actually top 2 mon in gen2 Neverused. Reason: as of the ban of Raichu and bulky waters like Feraligatr, Poliwrath and Golduck, it becomes the check to most of the threats in the tier, water types, fire types and Xatu. Rest talk makes amazing use of its special bulk and surf paired with ice beam or hp elec is unresisted (grass types aren't particularly common). Most pokemon on the special side struggle to 3hko it, electric types (none of which are fully evolved anymore) are also less of a presence and still take a huge hit from stab surf/ice beam. Encore is also a force to be reckoned with.
Nobody remembers that you can softlock yourself in RB when battling Lorelei's Dewgong when you bring a Poison or Fighting Type that is unable to kill the Dewgong with Rage and you have nothing else left to the point it will infinitely spam Rest? Edit: Forgot you need rage on your pokemon for the softlock to work since you can't run out of PP.
You specifically needed Rage on your Pokemon to get softlocked, as otherwise your Pokemon would eventually run out of PP and Struggle itself to death. Granted, if you had a move like Warp, then you'd be stuck there for a _very_ long time, but it's still far from the softlock you'd get if you brought your Primeape along in your final team.
It's not a true softlock. You can theoretically escape using the 256 glitch. Basically if you miss rage for until it runs out of pp then you can struggle and return to the Pokemon center
@@petelee2477 Not a _true_ true softlock, but Rage has 20 PP and will never end after its first successful use. The only practical way to escape is via TAS tools, because getting a single RNG value 20 times in a row in a game with as imprecise real-time RNG manipulation as Pokemon is, uh, quite the task. And that's the _best case scenario,_ actually, because PP Ups were introduced in gen 1. Have fun nailing that RNG value _twelve_ more times if you want to show this softlock who's boss!
So basically: Gen 1-2: outclassed by Lapras (and Cloyster) Gen 3-5: outclassed by Walrein AND Lapras Gen 6-7: outclassed by Walrein, Lapras, Lanturn, Jellicent, ....
@Leavanny The Cute Mantis I dunno about that, he would have recovery. Defence plus recovery would turn him into a great wall. That's if ice types can serve as walls...
I remember fondly 8 yo me admiring Dewgong's sleek graceful body and the rainbow-colored Aurora Beam coming out of its horn. And that's how I know I've always been gay.
Anyone else feel that, with all the PU/Untiered Pokémon we've been seeing on this channel as of late, that the individual Pokémon videos could be a little less and other kinds of videos could start to appear more on this channel? It's not like there isn't plenty of other content they could do more of. - Summary of Generation 2 competative battling (and other gens) - The History of (Type)-types, since so far they've only done Ice - History of Competative Smash Bros. - History of Sweepers in Competative Pokémon (They did Gen 3 but we haven't seen those since then either) I still love this channel but with only unimpressive Pokémon every single week, I kinda feel that there is so much that could be done here while these kinds of videos are getting a little boring to me.
I would buff its stats greatly. Dewgong BST: 475 ---> 525 HP: Down to 80 from 90 Attack: Down to 60 from 70 Defense: Down to 75 from 80 Special Attack: Up to 130 from 70 Special Defense: Down to 80 from 90 Speed: Up to 95 from 70
It's a shame, I really like Dewgong. I'm a big fan of simple designs when it comes to Pokemon (which is why I tend to like gen 1 and 2 designs over most generations) so it's kinda upsetting to see Dewgong not get much its way when they started doing megas and regional forms. Now, two years later with gen 9 out, it still doesn't receive a unique regional form. I don't even think it's obtainable in Scarlet/Violet, but if it is, the only thing that benefits it is changing its Tera-type. Even then, that won't help it too much given most of its stats.
I've been playing some Crystal lately and noticed that you haven't done Ariados or Noctowl yet. I'm wondering if you can please highlight some of these forgotten Pokemon, especially Ariados, who was a big staple of Koga's Elite Four team in the game.
Out of this entire series, 13 Ice Type Pokémon were reviewed by FSG(Weavile, Froslass, Mamoswine, Glaceon, Regice, Delibird, Articuno, Lapras, Jynx, Cloyster, Dewgong, A!Ninetales, Iceslash). Of those, only 5 of them(Weavile, Froslass, Mamoswine, A!Ninetales, and Cloyster) were remotely useable in tiers that I believe actually mattered(RU and up. If you believe that RU isn’t good either, that makes it even worse), and I think FSG has already covered most of the actually competitive Ice Pokémon. Also note that most of the Pokémon listed are fast or have priority moves, Cloyster being the only exception. Ice type is in definite need of a defensive buff. The amount of offensive-oriented Ice Types in SnS is appreciated, but Ice type in general is not a good type to have.
in one of my nuzlockes it actually turned out okay, because I went to the move tutor and it learned signal beam, which was great against slowbro and jynx for lorelei as well as bruno and agatha and all of lances team.
I think dewgong should get an evolution, maybe fix it towards speed & offense since pretty much every water/ice Pokémon has bulky stat spread, better to fill a niche than lose a competition
I always felt like Dewgong got the shaft in Gen 1 and the remakes. A great, bulky, ice/water type with a pretty iconic look. But he's weaker than a lot of other water types. Which isn't that bad, but the real issue: Way before you even encounter Dewgong, the game gives you Lapras for free, a bigger, stronger water/ice pokemon, that also got a lot of love in the anime. Not like we could ever know, but I'd love to see how many people back in the day finished RBY or FR/LG with Dewgong in their party. It has to be 1% or less. Lapras had to be way, way more. And then the Spheal/Sealeo/Walrein line comes in, kinda running a similar aesthetic to Dewgong, and still being way, way better. Dewgong kinda gets the shaft in competitive in just in the games.
I had the seal plush as a kid.... always had a soft spot for dewgong...but it doesn't do anything. Sad. I hate Pokemon like this the most, a perfectly decent mon, that hasn't been given a reason to use. No role. Nothing unique. Just there
I got to swim with manatees this week (which are related to real like Dewgongs) and can confirm If manatees were in Pokémon they would outclass Dewgong 😂
Everyone else using avalugg to thwart kyurem blacks z freeze shock:🤓 Me using a mon who has a quad ice resistance and thick fat to thwart kyurem blacks z freeze shock:😎 Note: I just tested this, they take about the same exact damage😭
It probably doesn't matter, but there is actually another meta where Dewgong is viable, the gen 3 doubles meta. In recent years, ADV doubles has developed an legitimate metagame, it just doesn't get any press. And there, Dewgong has a solid place for being one of only 2 pokemon in gen 3 to get both Fake Out and Encore (the other being Mr. Mime). On top of those moves, Dewgong also has speed control in the form of Icy Wind. Thick Fat is also pretty relevant because there's some powerful fire types in the tier. Moltres is a common choice for a special attacker, and on sun teams it hits like a tank. Houndoom also has a big place in the meta, being the only pokemon who checks both Gengar and Metagross, the kings of ADV doubles who are all but omnipresent. Milotic is better at checking fire types, but Dewgong has some legitimately good matchups.
My memories of dugong is from platinum/hgss in the battle frontier rental where it revenge killed my rental pokemon with 3 priority moves. Aka fake out, ice shard and aqua jet.
There are only so many superstar Pokemon with long illustrious competitive careers to do episodes on. FSG has hit most of the famous Pokemon from Gens 1 - 4, and I can understand why they're taking it slow on dipping into Gen V
The most Dewgong has done is softlocked players in Red and Blue through Lorelei endlessly using Rest.

There actually was a perish song team in doubles that included dewgong in 2015. Wasnt very well known but as far as dedicated perish teams go it was the best one out there and dewgong played an essential part in it due to its access to fake out, perish song and encore next to gothitelle in trick room

But still I get your point.
Dude, I love that scene in the movie when all those brave trainers use surf in the middle of the hurricane to reach Mewtwo's Island!! That Dewgong looks so friggin' heroic!!
Guess Dewgong didn't get the SEEL of approval!

To me, Seel/Dewgong are fine, but I’m more of a Spheal/Sealeo/Walrein guy.
Speaking of which, I wonder if we’ll be getting Walrein in the upcoming weeks.🙏
The Spheal line is the real alternative option to Lapras in Hoenn
"Dewgong is the Narwhale of pokemon"
You know Dewgong is a literal Dewgong right?
Sterling its narwhal. There’s no e. And the animal is spelled duogong
@@eflygon8218 It's spelt Dugong. Stop.

A DUGONG. COME ON NOW
So now that we've analyzed Walrein's competitive history, who wants to do Dewgong next?
I once came up with an idea for a regional form of Dewgong, that would be Water/Fire and have Thick Fat, Flash Fire, and Solar Power as possible abilities. But since its stats would be unchanged, I don't know how this would change its competitive viability, as this form's still losing 25% to Stealth Rock each switch-in. At least it's now 8× resistant to both Fire and Ice with Thick Fat! ^^;

Me: is it a Narwhal, Sea Lion or Dugong
Kellen: Yes
Dewgong is literally Seel with a horn
And Ice Type
"Dewgong outclassed by eviolite Seel in PU"
and now is one of the best for pvp in pokemon go, justice for Dewgong!
@@hi-i-am-atan true. I never entered the situation myself so I wasn't sure if I remember correctly
It's not a true softlock. You can theoretically escape using the 256 glitch. Basically if you miss rage for until it runs out of pp then you can struggle and return to the Pokemon center
@@petelee2477 good luck with that. You are more likely to find 10 or more shinies in a row than getting those odds on a 20 PP move
Ah yes, Dewgong and Seel. Also known as the "worse spheal" line.
@Tom The Fish True, but spheal is also the cutest pokemon in existence so they have that going for them as well.

Anyone else feel that, with all the PU/Untiered Pokémon we've been seeing on this channel as of late, that the individual Pokémon videos could be a little less and other kinds of videos could start to appear more on this channel? It's not like there isn't plenty of other content they could do more of.
- Summary of Generation 2 competative battling (and other gens)
- The History of (Type)-types, since so far they've only done Ice
- History of Competative Smash Bros.
- History of Sweepers in Competative Pokémon (They did Gen 3 but we haven't seen those since then either)
I still love this channel but with only unimpressive Pokémon every single week, I kinda feel that there is so much that could be done here while these kinds of videos are getting a little boring to me.

0:25 Dewgong was like 3-4 metres long in the first movie, why is so small in the games?
Worth noting VGC 15, Dewgong had a niche on Perish Trap teams, thanks to access to both perish song and Fake Out. Small, but better than nothing.
"How good was Dewgong actually?"

@@JToon78 YES BEST BOY
It's a shame, I really like Dewgong. I'm a big fan of simple designs when it comes to Pokemon (which is why I tend to like gen 1 and 2 designs over most generations) so it's kinda upsetting to see Dewgong not get much its way when they started doing megas and regional forms. Now, two years later with gen 9 out, it still doesn't receive a unique regional form.
I don't even think it's obtainable in Scarlet/Violet, but if it is, the only thing that benefits it is changing its Tera-type. Even then, that won't help it too much given most of its stats.
How good was DisGong actually?! Hehe
Then you whip out a Dewgong out of nowhere...
*NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE DARK LORD*

I've been playing some Crystal lately and noticed that you haven't done Ariados or Noctowl yet. I'm wondering if you can please highlight some of these forgotten Pokemon, especially Ariados, who was a big staple of Koga's Elite Four team in the game.
You know you’re in trouble when you’re outclassed by Walrein.
I’ve been watching these videos nonstop lately and ah my goodness, I ADORE THESE VIDEOS!! Thanks for doing such amazing work!

Which isn't that bad, but the real issue:
Way before you even encounter Dewgong, the game gives you Lapras for free, a bigger, stronger water/ice pokemon, that also got a lot of love in the anime.

These videos are getting more short and depressing by the week.
Ok
There not a lot to say about dewgong maybe thats why

This month is gonna have videos that can basically be summed up with the statement "not very good"
There are only so many superstar Pokemon with long illustrious competitive careers to do episodes on. FSG has hit most of the famous Pokemon from Gens 1 - 4, and I can understand why they're taking it slow on dipping into Gen V
