I think the one thing that has made a united Earth difficult is a fear of the erosion of cultural and national identity. In Star trek it was a delicate balance between uniting nations of earth and maintaining a rich and culturally diverse population.
National identity is just a archaic form of tribalism my group is better than your group And i believe we need to get rid of that but i am not arguing that everyone should think the same everyone should still have the freedom of religion and to exspress themselfs but nationalism is something i personally do not understand why it is so inportant to people we are all from earth and people are people no matter where you are and most diferences are not that big in the grant scheme of things why should someone born in a diferent geographical location be worth less or deserve less than someone down the street we all want happy lives and everyone deserves to have a life free of extreme violence war and starvation

Cultural differences, geographical differences, Wealth, power, identity. All things that contribute to the mindset of division. There have to be aspects and niches of different cultures that would need to be sacrificed in order for a uniform Earth government to exist. In a world where people want more, more money, a higher status, more recourses, and where those things are scarce, it is very difficult for people to unite.
I always figured United Earth was a federation of nations within the United Federation of Planets. Presumably with some of those nations being federations themselves. So many levels of federations!
That's the beauty of democratic federalism! You can break it down at any level that is most effective for governance while still retaining some degree of sovereignty between layers.
It would be the only way I think the common people would accept a global government. They would have to be either a federation or a republic for representation. Republics and federations are fairly similar.

One of the biggest factors not mentioned is the fact after warp drive became common there was a mass exodus of people. This is shown in the show all the time with lost colonys. The option to just leave is one many would take. This probably thinned out a lot of problematic groups. Thus making change a lot easier. The colonization of just the home system would greatly thin numbers. The power to just leave, and start over somewhere unsettled, is something we haven't had since colonization time.

Earth was a mess when the Vulcan arrived, still suffering from the collapse of governments, environment, etc. Humans could not pull Earth back from the post-apocalyptic nightmare. The technology to repair the environment from radiation and other toxins, synthesize food, etc. came from the Vulcans. Firefly's humans carried the same mindset that doomed their Earth to their new worlds. The same worldview that is dooming our world: hate, greed, lust for power, etc.
In This Side of Paradise, we get to see McCoy's southern drawl; all he needed was the Mint Julep to complete that picture. I'm not surprised he was one of those inbreds that couldn't let go of their hate.

Love this one! I'm writing a Sci-Fi graphic novel and in it, people on Mars, have their own language. At least 3 different dialects. Good thing that Star Trek has Universal Translation tech otherwise they would need protocol droids like in Star Wars.

I was perplexed when I was early in the fandom that there isn't a United Sol government made up by different planetary bodies with the hierarchy of what orbits which planet. But after understanding how early first contact was compared to colonization of Sol, it makes sense since the need for say Mars or other planets and moons to be independent is less necessary to an Expanse like scenario.
I believe at least in beta canon, humans comprise of at least 3 member seats in the UFP because UE, Mars, and Alpha Centauri are separate planetary governments.
Regarding population change and world governments, a huge consideration here too is that beyond the loss of 30% of the world population during World War III and afterward ("Strange New Worlds") in major cities (First Contact), there was also a *massive* push for colonization and resettlement, especially in the 22nd century ("Up The Long Ladder"). This would probably put all of Earth in a similar position as certain European countries like Ireland, where famine and emigration in the 19th and 20th centuries resulted in a modern population that is about 3 million lower than its peak in the 1840s. This would likely have two different effects on Earth itself. First, it could reinforce some conservative, traditional perspectives especially for many of those that remained or moved back over time - Picard's father deciding to run an old family vineyard in France abandoned in WWII and Chekov being a proud Russian versus Picard's pioneering ancestors settling Mars (Generations), or radical "Neo-Transcendentalists" ("Up The Long Ladder") or supporters of genetic engineering ("The Masterpiece Society") leaving Earth to build new colonies in other star systems. (This might even be reflected in maintaining racial distinctions up to the 24th century, although I'd prefer to assume that racism isn't a byproduct of this type of sorting in the Star Trek universe.) Second, and most importantly, is that the losses in the 21st century and the subsequent "brain drain" of dynamic, technically skilled people in the 22nd century would leave Earth with far less labor capacity and human resources. (See the Martian Congressional Republic after the ring gates are discovered in The Expanse, for instance.) Considering this, it may just have been out of necessity that Earth governments streamlined and consolidated many of their functions into a centralized world government! The post-scarcity economy, technological advancements after First Contact, and dearth of labor overlapping with a pressing need to repair the planet after thousands of years of damage from human war and urbanization might even mean that their world government wouldn't even have the same structure or functions as nation-states have today. (What could tax policy in the Federation look like if you don't buy anything and don't have an income, for example?) In addition, note that the only times we've ever seen actual bustling "modern" cities in Star Trek in operation aside from San Francisco have really just been with London (Star Trek Into Darkness), Boston ("Rememberance"), and to a lesser extent Paris ("We'll Always Have Paris", "Rememberance"). Even with those representations though, they *still* don't feel dramatically more occupied than our versions of those cities. (The only exceptions are Paris from "Will You Take My Hand", which felt like someone dropped the Eiffel Tower onto Coruscant, and Okinawa/The Daystrom Institute in "Rememberance" with all of the weird floating structures.) And, because Chateau Picard still exists in the same form as it did centuries before, Raffi can camp out in a trailer near Vasquez Rocks, and Starfleet captains all seem to have cabins in the woods on Earth (Generations, "Crisis Point 2: Paradoxus", "Strange New Worlds"), the franchise also suggests that the countryside hasn't been radically urbanized to accommodate a growing population that is billions higher than the population today (save for Mohave as seen in matte painting in "The Cage"/"The Menagerie"). Anyway, good video, and good work!

This video - like mentioned in another comment - felt like a 5, 6 minute analysis. Time passes really fast when listening to your content. These days its my main distraction from our cynical f*** up world(order). Best escape from reality atm and really appreciated ;)
One of the more interesting aspects of Stargate SG-1, which is for me the most cynical realistic scenario for a lot of space show tropes, is the idea that intergalactic space travel can belong to a specific nation. The timeline for SG-1 is frozen at the cusp of worldwide exposure and I would be interested in a spinoff show that examines the era after the truth about the Stargates are exposed. The nations of Earth do know about them and for a time Russia had it's own Stargate but the public doesn't know and given how close Earth has come to being attacked and conquered I can't imagine public opinion being positive. A few episodes have shown the future, which appears to be one of cooperation and prosperity, but nothing beats seeing events unfold in real time.
I think it's possible that some corporate entity becomes the de-facto united Earth "government," while the existing governments still exist and function in-name. Basically the way the US government is almost entirely bought and owned by corporate donors, just on a global scale. Here's hoping for the Star Trek version though, as always it's the best we can hope for!

My fan theory is that UESPA and the other pre Federation Space Forces became different commands in the Federation Starfleet and probably didn't have a fully unified Fleet until the 2240s wich would explain some things
One thing about the home countries and states of various characters just makes me believe harder in the theory I once saw someone say, and have adopted as my headcanon, that the universal translator removes accents, or transposes them into what we hear.

Very sorry about that. I had watched so many of these videos that I thought I had subscribed. Didn't realize that I wasn't. Fixed that. Interesting video as always. My Star Trek Online character happens to be from Australia, (I just have a fancy for Australia), and I most always enjoy a chance to learn about the world he lives in.
I think they have varying success defending earth because they actually put very few defenses on and around earth. So it literally depends what ships are currently in spacedock and ready.
Their are two reasons that Earth was able to unite and change Humanity forever; #1 was the development of replicator technology and #2 the dissolution of using monetary currency. Replicators removed the concept of need and leverage for need. The removal of money from society also removed and enhanced the need for biased political positions and stances.

Is it too optimistic? If you asked me in my 20’s, I would have said no. Fast forward 3 decades, and having watched 2020, I’m now going to say yes. The concept of some event “bringing humanity together” seems far fetched now. First contact would likely only drive humans further apart, not bring us together. We’d end up with a faction that’s pro-alien and another that’s anti-alien with dozens of others between those two ends of the spectrum. I don’t even think global thermonuclear war would do it, we’d just go back to fighting with sticks and stones.
Age and experience definitely have a way of stripping optimism... there's a famous quote that states "If you're not a liberal in your 20s, you have no heart. If you're still a liberal in your 30s, you have no brain.". True words.
Have always wondered this about the Star Trek universe. They don’t use money and whenever they show shots off Earth, everyone is dressed almost the same in grey or brown mono-tone generic outfits.
I don't think a united world government will happen at least not as long as people have a choice about it, even in the most optimistic of scenarios the drive for different groups to split off and do their own thing is too deeply ingrained into humanity, even in star trek there exist independent human colonies that are not part of the federation presumably for that very reason.
One of my assumptions based on the Star Trek timeline is that the "superman" uprising in the Eugenics War of the 1990s prevented 9/11 from happening. Politics in the world would've changed depending on whether a region was ruled by benevolent or power hungry engineered people. (I even imagined an alternate Terran Empire rising out of prolonged, oppressive rule by the supermen, until finally overthrown by their hardened subjects!) Think about the lasting lessons from that period: a growing reluctance to allow any small group of "rulers" into power, again. An episode of DS9 (possibly the one where Sisko became the activist Bell) implied economic upheavals led to WWIII. Seen in light of post Eugenic Wars, this could have been an outcome of different factions vying for power, while trying to divorce their agendas from the memory of the Eugenics Wars. I think you did yourself a disservice by not factoring in the brief conquest of part of Earth by the genetic supermen, & the fight to overthrow them. All demographics in the 21st Century onward would've been different from our history. Some nations devastated & still trying to rebuild; some alliances badly fractured; global economy possibly similar to post Covid. I think this may have fueled a drive toward more widespread democratization. WWIII could then have possibly been a last gasp by dictatorships & similar authoritarians.
Earth won't ever be united until we have something, or someone, to unite against. As long as we're "alone" in the universe, we will remain tribal in nature. There's also the unfortunate ease at which humans with power become greedy and corrupted....
I would like to hear your perspective on how rapidly the United Earth formed given that, in at least some parts of Earth, the Post Atomic Horror was still going on, complete with an authoritarian justice system in 2079. My head canon is that once the Post Atomic Horror arose, the Vulcans became anxious about the trajectory of a warp capable civilization descending into chaos and went "Captain Kirk" on things and and took a more active role in restoring and developing Earth's government. This might explain the later antipathy of humans to Vulcans in Enterprise. Of course, this all hinges around Gene Roddenberry's vision that a utopian Earth would only emerge once humanity had gone through many tribulations, a view that I see as becoming more stark over time. The vision of the trials seem to start with the short lived Eugenics War and then became more severe by the time Roddenberry wrote Encounter at Farpoint. I believe this tension around 23rd century utopia vs. 21st century dystopia is what has ultimately resulted with an accelerated timeline, where events like the SS Valiant reaching the galactic barrier in the 2060s are hard to reconcile - and that was of course established very early on. Anyway, that's a ramble! Bottom line, if you could give some of your own theories about this specific part of the history (assuming you haven't already covered it somewhere?) that would be great.

I think the key difference between money as we use it and credit system used on Star Trek is that you can't do high finance and currency speculation with credits. It likely has a UBI for each citizen, an earning factor for performing work or actions that lead to a betterment of society. Credit based pay for work done is likely on a standard table based on the level of difficulty, skill, danger, and tenure in the position. A easy safe job being paid the least. It would be a better way to value occupations. With most people living in apartments and condos, there is likely a separate housing voucher system. Utilities are likely free but metered to control excessive usage. Of course health care is free. By the 24 century, replicators cover all the basic things like food, clothing, etc. Credits would only be spent on luxuries such as farmed food, going out to eat at privately owned restaurants, vehicles, etc. It's likely that interplanetary companies still operation on a currency system like gold pressed latinum. The Federation likely has a currency exchange for citizens going outside of the Federation. I think it would be amusing if the Federation scientists learned out to replicate gold pressed latinum or even have been able to for some time but they restrict it generally to prevent the political problems.

The direction of travel since 1945 has been pretty one way. A World Bank, the IMF, the WTO, international climate law, an ICC, universal human rights declaration as well as an explosion of regional trading blocs and/or customs unions. We also have an ISS and a supranational space agency in ESA.

Parliamentry Republics also have Ministers and a President, for example Germany there the Presidant is largely Ceremonial and Serves as the the Figure Head of the Country while the different Ministers are Part of the Parliament and Government and organize different branches of the government. It would be an effective way of managing the population. As the maquis crisis demonstrated, you can't have federation citizens just doing whatever they want.
I m old enough to have seen a few episodes of the original serie on tv. entertaining, funny, and light on philosophy. had trouble at first to get into tng, felt it lacked star wars action. but then, I got hooked on the philosophic content, as even after the episode was over, I kept thinking about the issues involved. I was thrilled like no other shows about the next one. I admit that the special effects were better than movies at the time. tng was, in my opinion, the best show to help humanity s evolution - mentality. the fails.... now we know that transporter tech is impossible. replicators seem not very credible either. the distances required to find that much alien life according to travel time is off. there should have been more robots like r2, c3 - po. the time vs evolution seem skewed a little. ground vehicles like 'lost in space' seem necessary if only for fun. definitively add depth to the United Earth structure and Klingon, Romulan specie. planet patrolling should consist of colonists, not more aliens. more like the 'outland' movie concept of mining or terraforming. it was a little gullible and superficial in retrospect. however, cars have much improved since 1900, and building a credible universe in the future with a budget is similar in concept, it improves, we must persevere, as it leads to ideas to improve reality by theorising. we need a positive but realist vision to do better. reality... as we speak, Russian ships armed with nukes are coming to international waters near Washington, no joke... it looks a lot like the 2010 movie scenario. humanity will not survive WW3, bunkers will not outlast the radiation or consequences. no matter how futile it might seem now, we must try to save our lives, the mind is more powerful than nukes. 2010 ; something wonderful!' I m French Canadian, dedicated for world peace and a savant. 'rain man', 'a wonderful mind' but practical. did research in old civilisations - religions. + is the ancient symbol of a creator, positive. follow the 10 commandments since 2015. science theories have clues of the existence of a God. my intuition tells me that our effort might get support. anyways, we have not much to lose. a combination of science - spirituality seems like the best tool to get attention and make a difference. 1 + 1 = 2, science is the truth, therefore, the way to God. the universe is mathematical, calculable, building blocks, creation. I m a fighter in spirit, I refuse to do nothing and wait the end. but I need help. United Earth looks possible. meritocracy, abolition of money, craddle to grave, arcology. all will help to sell peace. luck, circumstances are up to God. but we must try! you don t need to do a miracle, just focus on concepts for this new, better world concept inspired by star trek, be +. maybe we can have a debate, pause the war or something. others here can contribute. good work, and God save us all.
Not to say Discovery isn't canon or such but it's more than 900 years after Enterprise so it's possible that some changes have happened after the United Earth left the Federation of the 30th century

Regarding population change and world governments, a huge consideration here too is that beyond the loss of 30% of the world population during World War III and afterward ("Strange New Worlds") in major cities (First Contact), there was also a *massive* push for colonization and resettlement, especially in the 22nd century ("Up The Long Ladder"). This would probably put all of Earth in a similar position as certain European countries like Ireland, where famine and emigration in the 19th and 20th centuries resulted in a modern population that is about 3 million lower than its peak in the 1840s.
This would likely have two different effects on Earth itself. First, it could reinforce some conservative, traditional perspectives especially for many of those that remained or moved back over time - Picard's father deciding to run an old family vineyard in France abandoned in WWII and Chekov being a proud Russian versus Picard's pioneering ancestors settling Mars (Generations), or radical "Neo-Transcendentalists" ("Up The Long Ladder") or supporters of genetic engineering ("The Masterpiece Society") leaving Earth to build new colonies in other star systems. (This might even be reflected in maintaining racial distinctions up to the 24th century, although I'd prefer to assume that racism isn't a byproduct of this type of sorting in the Star Trek universe.)
Second, and most importantly, is that the losses in the 21st century and the subsequent "brain drain" of dynamic, technically skilled people in the 22nd century would leave Earth with far less labor capacity and human resources. (See the Martian Congressional Republic after the ring gates are discovered in The Expanse, for instance.) Considering this, it may just have been out of necessity that Earth governments streamlined and consolidated many of their functions into a centralized world government! The post-scarcity economy, technological advancements after First Contact, and dearth of labor overlapping with a pressing need to repair the planet after thousands of years of damage from human war and urbanization might even mean that their world government wouldn't even have the same structure or functions as nation-states have today. (What could tax policy in the Federation look like if you don't buy anything and don't have an income, for example?)
In addition, note that the only times we've ever seen actual bustling "modern" cities in Star Trek in operation aside from San Francisco have really just been with London (Star Trek Into Darkness), Boston ("Rememberance"), and to a lesser extent Paris ("We'll Always Have Paris", "Rememberance"). Even with those representations though, they *still* don't feel dramatically more occupied than our versions of those cities. (The only exceptions are Paris from "Will You Take My Hand", which felt like someone dropped the Eiffel Tower onto Coruscant, and Okinawa/The Daystrom Institute in "Rememberance" with all of the weird floating structures.) And, because Chateau Picard still exists in the same form as it did centuries before, Raffi can camp out in a trailer near Vasquez Rocks, and Starfleet captains all seem to have cabins in the woods on Earth (Generations, "Crisis Point 2: Paradoxus", "Strange New Worlds"), the franchise also suggests that the countryside hasn't been radically urbanized to accommodate a growing population that is billions higher than the population today (save for Mohave as seen in matte painting in "The Cage"/"The Menagerie").

One of the more interesting aspects of Stargate SG-1, which is for me the most cynical realistic scenario for a lot of space show tropes, is the idea that intergalactic space travel can belong to a specific nation. The timeline for SG-1 is frozen at the cusp of worldwide exposure and I would be interested in a spinoff show that examines the era after the truth about the Stargates are exposed. The nations of Earth do know about them and for a time Russia had it's own Stargate but the public doesn't know and given how close Earth has come to being attacked and conquered I can't imagine public opinion being positive. A few episodes have shown the future, which appears to be one of cooperation and prosperity, but nothing beats seeing events unfold in real time.

I think it's possible that some corporate entity becomes the de-facto united Earth "government," while the existing governments still exist and function in-name. Basically the way the US government is almost entirely bought and owned by corporate donors, just on a global scale. Here's hoping for the Star Trek version though, as always it's the best we can hope for!

Very sorry about that. I had watched so many of these videos that I thought I had subscribed. Didn't realize that I wasn't. Fixed that. Interesting video as always. My Star Trek Online character happens to be from Australia, (I just have a fancy for Australia), and I most always enjoy a chance to learn about the world he lives in.
I think they have varying success defending earth because they actually put very few defenses on and around earth.
So it literally depends what ships are currently in spacedock and ready.
Their are two reasons that Earth was able to unite and change Humanity forever; #1 was the development of replicator technology and #2 the dissolution of using monetary currency. Replicators removed the concept of need and leverage for need. The removal of money from society also removed and enhanced the need for biased political positions and stances.

Is it too optimistic? If you asked me in my 20’s, I would have said no. Fast forward 3 decades, and having watched 2020, I’m now going to say yes. The concept of some event “bringing humanity together” seems far fetched now. First contact would likely only drive humans further apart, not bring us together. We’d end up with a faction that’s pro-alien and another that’s anti-alien with dozens of others between those two ends of the spectrum.
I don’t even think global thermonuclear war would do it, we’d just go back to fighting with sticks and stones.
Age and experience definitely have a way of stripping optimism... there's a famous quote that states "If you're not a liberal in your 20s, you have no heart. If you're still a liberal in your 30s, you have no brain.". True words.

I don't think a united world government will happen at least not as long as people have a choice about it, even in the most optimistic of scenarios the drive for different groups to split off and do their own thing is too deeply ingrained into humanity, even in star trek there exist independent human colonies that are not part of the federation presumably for that very reason.
One of my assumptions based on the Star Trek timeline is that the "superman" uprising in the Eugenics War of the 1990s prevented 9/11 from happening. Politics in the world would've changed depending on whether a region was ruled by benevolent or power hungry engineered people. (I even imagined an alternate Terran Empire rising out of prolonged, oppressive rule by the supermen, until finally overthrown by their hardened subjects!)
Think about the lasting lessons from that period: a growing reluctance to allow any small group of "rulers" into power, again. An episode of DS9 (possibly the one where Sisko became the activist Bell) implied economic upheavals led to WWIII. Seen in light of post Eugenic Wars, this could have been an outcome of different factions vying for power, while trying to divorce their agendas from the memory of the Eugenics Wars.
I think you did yourself a disservice by not factoring in the brief conquest of part of Earth by the genetic supermen, & the fight to overthrow them. All demographics in the 21st Century onward would've been different from our history. Some nations devastated & still trying to rebuild; some alliances badly fractured; global economy possibly similar to post Covid.
I think this may have fueled a drive toward more widespread democratization. WWIII could then have possibly been a last gasp by dictatorships & similar authoritarians.
Interestingly, a possible WW3 in our reality is also the result of consequences from authoritarian systems trying to cling to power.
Earth won't ever be united until we have something, or someone, to unite against. As long as we're "alone" in the universe, we will remain tribal in nature. There's also the unfortunate ease at which humans with power become greedy and corrupted....
or a catastrophic event that proves the existence of a creator [2001]

I would like to hear your perspective on how rapidly the United Earth formed given that, in at least some parts of Earth, the Post Atomic Horror was still going on, complete with an authoritarian justice system in 2079.
My head canon is that once the Post Atomic Horror arose, the Vulcans became anxious about the trajectory of a warp capable civilization descending into chaos and went "Captain Kirk" on things and and took a more active role in restoring and developing Earth's government. This might explain the later antipathy of humans to Vulcans in Enterprise.
Of course, this all hinges around Gene Roddenberry's vision that a utopian Earth would only emerge once humanity had gone through many tribulations, a view that I see as becoming more stark over time. The vision of the trials seem to start with the short lived Eugenics War and then became more severe by the time Roddenberry wrote Encounter at Farpoint. I believe this tension around 23rd century utopia vs. 21st century dystopia is what has ultimately resulted with an accelerated timeline, where events like the SS Valiant reaching the galactic barrier in the 2060s are hard to reconcile - and that was of course established very early on.
Anyway, that's a ramble! Bottom line, if you could give some of your own theories about this specific part of the history (assuming you haven't already covered it somewhere?) that would be great.

Great analysis, Thanks! I am curious about how Earth eliminated money or how it altered its financial system as stated in Star Trek? How does commerce occur without a monetary system? Perhaps you already have a video on this.
I think the key difference between money as we use it and credit system used on Star Trek is that you can't do high finance and currency speculation with credits. It likely has a UBI for each citizen, an earning factor for performing work or actions that lead to a betterment of society. Credit based pay for work done is likely on a standard table based on the level of difficulty, skill, danger, and tenure in the position. A easy safe job being paid the least. It would be a better way to value occupations. With most people living in apartments and condos, there is likely a separate housing voucher system. Utilities are likely free but metered to control excessive usage. Of course health care is free. By the 24 century, replicators cover all the basic things like food, clothing, etc. Credits would only be spent on luxuries such as farmed food, going out to eat at privately owned restaurants, vehicles, etc. It's likely that interplanetary companies still operation on a currency system like gold pressed latinum. The Federation likely has a currency exchange for citizens going outside of the Federation. I think it would be amusing if the Federation scientists learned out to replicate gold pressed latinum or even have been able to for some time but they restrict it generally to prevent the political problems.

Parliamentry Republics also have Ministers and a President, for example Germany there the Presidant is largely Ceremonial and Serves as the the Figure Head of the Country while the different Ministers are Part of the Parliament and Government and organize different branches of the government. In the end the power still lies in the hand of the parliament

a fan theory I heard is by TNG era the vast majority of the population live most if not all of their lives inside holodecks blissfully unaware. the distances required to find that much alien life according to travel time is off.
there should have been more robots like r2, c3 - po.
