  • Microprose Grand Prix 4 was the ultimate expression of a series which was (no pun intended) a game changer... nearly two decades ago. Is it possible that in 2019 this aging superstar can still deliver the goods?

Note: You MUST own a legitimate copy of Grand Prix 4 for these to work.

As a member of the GP4 community for about 15 years, I need to mention some things
First of, you can still find even better quality cars etc. for 2001 season than you have. And, as of late last year (2020) an amazing remaster of 2001 season was released and the game looks better than ever. In some aspect, as good as sims released just a couple of years ago.
Don't let qualifying rules, refueling rules etc. stop you. Car physics and performance can be updated to any season and feels great to drive.
Modding is not the easiest, when you try i out for the first time. However, you learn quickly and it becomes satisying to update the game. I have every season from 1997 to 2019, and with one tool I can create a custom carset and copy it into the game along with tracks and performance and it's good to go. There are tons of tutorials to help you with this.
Lastly, I have to mention. GP4 has an broadcast mode (used in the beginning of this video) were you can choose your own settings and then let the AI control all cars and battle on track. This is very satisfying and very exciting at times. I do championships on occasions were I just let the AI do the driving. No other racing game/sim have this feature (that I know of)

4:42 - "You never get any of those scenarios where the AI is overly fast or slow at different tracks and different corners, where they're just unrealistic, they will block you if you try to overtake them..."
That is the KEY to making a great F1 game that today's developers still can't understand. The reason why the AI in the Grand Prix series worked so well was that all the cars on the track, player-controlled and computer controlled, were subjected to the exact same physics and calculated in real time. There were very little hidden calculations or "magic sectors" going on; As a matter of fact, you could "jump" to view any AI car, at any moment, during any session, without even having to go into the pits or into silly director modes.
Anyone who's ever modded any Grand Prix games will know that the system was stupendously simple, but very effective in its function: each team had a "power" setting - which is pretty much self explanatory; Then each driver in the team would have another setting, usually called "grip", which dictated how fast he'd drive in the corners, how effective would it be under braking, traction and so on; And then there was a third setting, called "range", which was basically an RNG seed for a value to add, at the beginning of every session, to the driver's basic "grip" setting.
It was simple to the point of being basic, but it worked incredibly well to simulate real F1 scenarios of the time - for example, on a track like Monza or old Hockenheim, a Williams driver with the higher powered BMW engine but lower "grip" setting could beat the Ferraris; Or in the case of the Ferrari teammates in 2001, Schumacher would have a higher "grip" setting with a very low "range" setting, meaning he'd be always producing very consistent performances at the top of the field; Barrichello on the other hand would have a lower basic "grip", but with a higher "range" number - resulting, on average, on more modest performances but with the occasional time where he'd be untouchable even for MSC.

I would pay 250$ for a modern Grand Prix 5.
With the same feature as GP4 just better Graphics and modern Cars etc.
In modern games u hit a wall and yeah ur front spoiler maybe get a little damage and u keep go driving.
But on GP4 if u were of the road u better beg that u dont hit the wall...because if u were unlucky than rip ur car.
Also the multiplayer was insane awesome:
I played with my brother and after a few minutes that i drove the AI will take control of my car and after a few seconds the Car from my Brother will get the control from the AI. So yeah. no stupid Split screen or whatever. Just awesome multiplayer. Best Multiplayer(without internet connection) i ever saw.

All of cars in the Microprose GP games (1-4) seem to have a 'gravity' and are part of the track that modern games just don't have with maybe the exception of Drive Club.
It's hard to explain but modern racing games all look like the cars are rotating around one fixed point in the middle of the car (kind of like Scalextric) where as these look like all four wheels are interacting with the road surface. Modern game cars are too light - almost like hollow cardboard models.
It may also be the low res and frame rate but I feel that 'grittyness' makes it look authentic from the cockpit view - modern games are just too smooth compared to real life footage.
    Classics!

Geoff Crammond is a computer game designer and programmer who specialises in motor racing games. A former defence industry systems engineer,[1] he claims to have had little interest in motor racing before programming his first racing game (Formula 3) back in 1984, but he holds a physics degree, which may explain the realism of some of his programming.

I played this game to death when it first came out. I loved it so much. I managed to get a hold of some mods that were basically to change damage control models. The game never really damaged your car much if you hit a wall or another car. With this mod, you were able to turn the damage up with a percentage slider. I found turning it up to around 70% was far more realistic. The game itself was replay heaven. I could sit and watch replays all day on this game.
I tried F1 2017 and it looks great, but it's a shame that Codemasters really stepped away from supporting KB users and now go more for people who can afford all the hardware needed to race properly.

What Brosef said. Additionally, the Codemasters game are progressively getting better. The difference between 2017 and 2019 is huge. Since the wheel is quite noisy, and I have kids, I must use the controller after their bed time and it's very usable and fairly cheap. Since you can use the Logitech MOMO wheel from 2006 in these games, a wheel with gear paddles and pedals are actually cheaper than a controller in this instance.
F1 2020 is due to release in the near future and whether the driving model is the same, slightly better or follows the same curve of improvements as it has since 2015 or so, it will be great.

We have almost taken a step back with Racing sims. As much as i hated my car having mechanical issues i also loved driving a buggered car to the points, F1 2018 has some of that now? but it is all fixed via the pit wall or only lasts 4 or 5 laps. I want a gear to go missing, or a cylinder to drop out. And then rain really helps it is so frustrating when you have a great dry car and all of a sudden it starts to spit.
Or you simply drive out of the pit lane and your car's engine lets go for no reason........
Also glad to see you are jumping in with the right driver. Go kimi

One option that the game had and that for me was indispensable and helped me a lot to memorize the circuits was the "suggested gear". You know if there's a racing game right now that has the suggested gear option? Because the trajectory line doesn't tell me what gear I should use to make the next turn.

I used to play this sim endlessly. Unfortunately I couldn't get it to run on W10 so I haven't played it for several years now. I've seen others, including the official F1 games, which they "update" every year without actually changing anything, but they're just not as good. Graphically things have moved on, but the physics has never been bettered... on modern sims the cars don't turn like a real car, they pivot around a central point which is just stupid. And the car setup element of GP4 is still light years ahead of anything else. The way I see it, Crammond GP4 is a proper sim, while the others are just arcade games.

Codemasters games have the immersion, but lack the simulation part.
Sims like Assetto Corsa, AMS2, Rfactor etc. have the physics but lack in immersion, in my opinion or just have bad ai or something.
Grand Prix 4 has everything that I ever wanted, good physics and great attention to detail (like the individual driver performances) which gives so mich immersion.

I always thought the AI was great, took years to be equalled in fact. Compared to the EA sports offerings of around the same time (where every car at Monaco lost at least one wing) there was no comparison. The AI will defend, the lappers will yield, the car behind will try to dummy you and divebomb... but they aren't perfect. They are prone to the occasional silly error, and yes they will hit each other on occasion.
Add into that mechanical failures (around 6 or 7 different types) changing weather, marshals on the side of the track, I think it makes for quite an immersive experience. Nothing from its era comes close.

As a kid, that's normal. The level of general knowledge, basic understanding of car control ideal lines, importance of consistancy lap after lap, general understanding of a gp weekend, basic setups etc. that this requires is a bit too much for a "kid". That's why it's called a simulatiin rather than game.

Best advice I can give is try a reinstall. Occasionally for whatever reason Windows 10 just doesn't like GP4. I uninstalled it with the intention of doing an install/mod guide... guess what... same issue. Haven't had time to go back and try again as yet.

Download and install GpXPatch v1.02, open the program and run the game from there, GpXPatch is used for a better perfomance on the game, you have several tabs where you can change the options of the TV interface that appears on the game, the way the engine sounds, and other stuff. Hope this solves your problem. PD: I know its very late but tell me if you already solved this problem :)

Call me crazy, I don't care. Codemasters F1: poop. I have been playing rF since 2014, but if I didn't, I would surely be playing GP4. Even if you watch the new Codemasters games, the tracks from the GP4 era are poorly made: potholes where there are none, exaggerated zigzagging of the track's boundary lines, poor cant in places where they are pronounced, poor design of the tracks height variations of the slopes, such as Spa, Interlagos or Nürburgring. They would have killed Imola too ... Only the new circuits that appeared after GP4 in F1 are well done. Race situations, maneuvers on the track, are for crying. The graphics? I shit on good graphics. What I want is quality, and that can only be achieved in GP3, which unfortunately has aged poorly in terms of circuits representation, and in GP4. Codemasters don't know anything. Geoff Crammond: God;) Regards!!! (thank you Google translator)
I copy and paste my commentary from another channel. Regards!!!

For sure. I haven't played a Codemasters game since F1 2011 (I got 5mins in and the xbox died) not because I don't like them, but I just can't be bothered anymore. GP4 for me is a hark back to the good old days, and somehow with no window dressing, no anything really, they still manage to create immersion. That is why I remember this series of games so fondly.

@@user-gy2dr7ff9u I had 4 months of intense testing of F1 2011 on Playstation 3. By the 5th month I was back in rF and GP4 and I was using Play to watch DVD XD movies. There was no point of comparison. I won by 15 seconds in Brazil, by 40 in Korea, by 20 in Singapore and Abu Dhabi, at the highest level of difficulty and without any help. But at Spa and Silverstone, whatever I did with the box and spoiler configuration, I couldn't get past 11th place ... (???). I never got used to running with the screen full of useless information. The state of the tires must be felt by you, you decide whether to enter the pits or continue shooting with the same game. The positions on the track are decided by the use of the steering wheel, the pedals and the mirrors, none of those dummy rear cameras . I don't like having a track map that tells me where my rivals are going or if there is an accident with 4 corners in front. I like to freely choose the compound of tires that I will use in qualifying and racing and squeeze the maximum capacities of the tires and the car. Nothing to "manage". in F1 2011 I had to "manage" the softer compound that was required to be used once in each race, why? In F1 2011 the cars performed unreal, stupid maneuvers, which I have never seen in any TV race. What I could never get out of the screen is that damn notice that when I blocked the tires, it warned me with an image that where the red tires appeared, or when passing by the pianitos, what parts of the car were deteriorating. I know I blocked, I know I went through the pianos very hard or brushed the wall, you don't need to warn me like an idiot! Anyway, the golden ages of Geoff Crammond ...;) rF 1 captivated me by its realism of handling and by the number of circuits, I have more than 600, some that I did not even know, and from all over the world. Still in 60% of them I didn't get to run races, I just tried them, and I don't even know what level of difficulty I should choose. But if rF did not exist (on my PC I cannot play rF2) rest assured that my days as a simulator player would still belong to GP4 ... And someday I hope to come back hahahaha greetings !!!

@@user-gy2dr7ff9u And I forgot one of the main issues: how boring and mechanical it is to attack an opponent and go through it with DRS ... and how helpless and incapable of any defensive maneuver you feel when you are attacked with that device. In GP4, there were races in which I passed 40 laps behind Schumi without being able to pass it, the exciting thing about the pit stops, where you hardly lost or won 1 or 2 seconds, the start with your rival on the main straight and being behind all another round at 0.8, 1.1, 0.9, 1 ... There were races that were decided by a minimal (or big) error by me or my rival. I remember the first race I won in GP4, Indianapolis, coming out of the banked corner and beating Schumi by thousandths thanks to the suction of a Minardi ... Or defend 70% of the race in 5th place from the constant attack by the Panis BAR in Imola, no longer even able to fight for 4th place. But you finished those races satisfied, with the pleasure of having given all of you to the best of your ability and knowledge to attack or defend yourself. In F1 2011 and later, you pressed a little button, and everything was solved. I was already playing the latter without activating the DRS to pass, and thank goodness I had taken out the engineer's voice because they were going to start bothering me "for not activating it" ... Codemasters does not know what it is about. But they are not entirely to blame either. They should try to imitate reality as much as possible. They are the official game of the FIA. And the same reality has killed, in my opinion, F1. Geoff Crammond made an excellent product in an overall better time for motorsports. Cheers!!!
