    One thing I do when I re-upholster furniture is purchase some calico or cotton for the back to cover over the folded upholstery fabric. It creates a good finish and makes your project look that much better and tidier. I know you cannot see it but trust me it will make it look professionally done.

    If you reupholster with a fabric with definite pattern repeat, need to be sure it is straight across the top. My OCD says so. Bare bulb lighting is really harsh. Some kind of shade is needed, especially in a bedroom. Just my 2 cents.

      literally all i could after they stapled that fabric was that the pattern was crooked to to the headboard

    • @pe11entesque
      @pe11entesque 4 роки тому +19

      The pattern being crooked was probably caused by uneven tension. The best way to reupholster something is do one side with no tension, then do the opposite side with tension while checking periodically to make sure nothing is being pulled more than normal. Repeat for the other two sides

    • @debbievidal9536
      @debbievidal9536 4 роки тому +10

      @@pe11entesque I was always taught to start in the middle of opposite sides in order to obtain correct tension. Moreover with patterned fabric it is easy to see if it's not straight. The corners weren't correct either. Maybe I'm just being picky 🤷🤷🤷

    Instead of the peachy print and as it’s a small room.. I would add a mirror above the chest of drawers. And also add a small basket with little things like an extra charger, a lip balm some tissues and wipes. Oh and I would add a small chair or a tiny extra seating with a throw.

    • @suzymanville232
      @suzymanville232 4 роки тому +4

      Even one of those small round stools with wood legs and usually a faux fur or hide cover. That would add more texture and provide a seat, step-stool, or foot-stool for function.
      I loved the big plant. I think a mirror would be a better choice over the dresser, especially if not bringing the big mirror back. Lastly, the big print looked disproportionate over the smaller dresser and kinda blended into the wall.

      Yes of coarse a room make over does not include personal touches you add to that when you start living in the space. Everyone is different and I don't like clutter .catch all baskets bring clutter in my opinion. I don't need lip balm on display. It's in my purse.

    The wall paper is so lovely, too nice to cover with a headboard.
    A plain headboard could have cheapy mirrors glued across it, then turn it 180* to reflect the stately wall paper. Keep bedframe 4-6" away from drapes or bamboo blinds.

    Love the mix/match of patterns, love the wallpaper, love the rug, love the fiddle-leaf fig. Just can't love the "peachy" art. Once you'd left, I'd take the peachy art down, put the one on the floor up, and buy a glass shade for the lamp. But that's just me. Love your work, Alexandra!

    It's a bright fun room for such a small guest room! Only when she said "bedside table" I don't think the two boxes high up on the wall away from the bed qualifies as "bedside" Or maybe it's just I didn't see it right in the views she showed us?

    I think the pattern on pattern works in this case, but obviously when mixing patterns you have to be careful, but the ones you chose work well. With upholstery I think it would work better to actually line up the print so it isn't crooked to start with - you would only initially have to make it tight along the line of staples with the first row, not perpendicular to them as there's nothing yet to pull against. then evenly pull it tight on the opposite side if that makes sense. With a pattern it might help to start in the middle? Just a thought.

    Loved all the tips. We have very European small bedrooms and need to make the most out of the space available, so thank you for the tips! I also liked that your reupholstered the headboard and already saw a bunch of comments on the pattern, so no need to get into it 😊 It is soooo tricky to work with fabric! That being said, I appreciate that you just go for it 👏🏽

    Since I do not like birds, especially in the house, this beautiful paper would NOT be beautiful in my room. The pattern in the fabric does coordinate with the paper on the wall. Lovely, Lovely Well Done Alexandra!!

    Cute, but if I were a guest, I would like a bedside table, even one hung on the wall and a small chair where the plant is, a mirror where the Peachy sign is. Oh, and a wastebasket instead of laundry basket, and hang the art instead of propping it on the floor in such a small place.

    • @NatashaVincent
      @NatashaVincent 4 роки тому +2

      Agreeing on the approach. I was partial to a lush hanging plant and a guest-friendly wooden valet (which she could have placed the sponsor's product on). Not sure the fiddle leaf is real but I wouldn't want it near a vent if it is

      If it’s a guest room, you don’t need a laundry basket. A chair and a mirror would be more useful. I would have hung the leaning print, and skipped the Peachy.

    This was an odd one. Not what Im used to seeing from Alexandra. She has such a great eye and style that she can make anything look good. But I definitely feel like this room suffered from her inability to get out and shop and shipping taking a long time. This felt like it was a bunch of things from her craft/decor stash and It just wasn't as curated as usual. I also thought Carla wasn't with her because the lighting was pretty dark. Maybe they couldn't bring lights or the normal amount of people they have. I feel like there are a lot of negative comments and maybe Im not much better, but I just wanted to point out the fact that coming out of quarantine and will a lot of shops still being closed off there's bound to be some difficulties in designing a room in a short period of time.

    I like the color combo and the crane wallpaper. One thing with fabric covering; either with chair seats or headboards, if you are using a printed fabric with a big geometric or other design, you want to notice the repeat of the print, going up and down and across. It will be noticed if you do not center the pattern and make sure it is even across and up and down. I see on the headboard that the left side starts higher than the right, and it takes your eye down. If you need to at the fabric store, make sure you check your inches and tell the cutter you want the pattern to be in a certain place all the way across. Or you may not have enough to center. They can figure by inches, if it comes down to that. Or there are several fractional measurements on the yardstick and they can follow to the next fraction (1/4, 3/8, etc) to give you enough. If you straighten the cut there or at home, you will know you are straight all the way across. I have sewed for many years and worked in the fabric store industry for several years as well.

    Hi, Alexandra: You asked for feedback on the use of pattern-on-pattern.
    In my case, I tend to be rather conservative on the patterns in my clothes, accessories, etc. (I tend to shy away from attracting too much attention). But even at home, I lean toward subtle colors and patterns that are soothing.
    You pull off a good number of pattern-on-pattern in your makeover videos rather well. Your artistic leanings are very in sync with creating harmonious environments.
    You did it again, Alexandra! Take care and be well.

    Great choices! The only thing I would of changed would be to swap the wallpaper from behind the bed to the side of bed wall where those little black shelves are. And then put the black shelves above the bed. The shelves would of been a great paring with the lamp. And as for the wallpaper, it would of been absolutely dreamy to look at while laying down in bed! 🤩

    AG, I also did a similar thing to my metal headboard. It's the kind with lots of open spaces between fancy metal work. I covered some cotton batting with fabric, then attached it from behind, so the fabric shows between the fancy metal work, giving it a quilted look that I love. Then, I glued butterfly shaped buttons on the front, since I am a girly girl even at 65. Someone could also substitute foam rubber for the batting, where the metal work has larger spaces between it.

    Etsy has a number of sellers that make narrow / small side tables that attach to the wall. You could probably get someone to make tea/cell phone/wallet holders--at least one on the way in--for beside the bed. Many builders will build to spec. I didn't have room for an end table on one side of my guest bed and also on that side the bricked in flue filled up the corner. I attached a small, stylish walnut floating shelf the width of the flue build out and it's great for tea, a wallet, a cell phone.

    Love the tips. Love the accent wall and the mix of patterns but might prefer a different color on the headboard. Love the tall plant in the corner and the shelves. Would like more shelves, something closer to the bed. Don't like a light fixture with no shade and never will even if it is the only choice a person has. Might be grateful to have a light, but will never find it attractive or stylish. Surprised how well the rug goes with the frame of the print at the foot of the bed and with the black vent. Love that the bed linens pick up the peachy tones. Love that the beads and containers pick up the headboard color a bit. Love the difference adding the draw pulls made to the dresser. Overall great job Alexandra.
