I'm French and believed that the song was an American one later covered in French, not the other way around. The french lyrics are even sadder as the singer had left "without a word" to only return many years later when it is too late, and express his regrets for what he never said. Whatever version make me sad and nostalgic and I can't listen to this too often.

I think it was a much bigger hit in Europe than in the U.S. Haven't heard it in all those years and never really knew much about it. Heard it tonight on Griselda and decided to look it up. This song used to come on the radio a lot when I was a kid living in Athens, Greece in the early '70s. I think it was a much bigger hit in Europe than in the U.S. Haven't heard it in all those years and never really knew much about it. Heard it tonight on Griselda and decided to look it up. Brings back good memories (though a somewhat depressing song).
