Hey Nathan, the bodyboarder is an old friend of mine, his name is Andreas. Australian living in Berlin for years now. Great guy!! Looks like you guys had fun
Love it. And mad props to old mate sending it as a fellow boog, the energy I get off you being un biased towards bodyboarders gives me hope for the future of slab surfing, whatever shape of the craft, charging is charging
Cold water surfing is extremely difficult used to hate surfing in the winter in Ireland when i was beginning but strange thing happens after a while you fall in love in the pain and struggle. Honestly impressed how easy you adapted to the cold brother:)
totally agree with you! something about the extra struggle makes it all feel more worth it, and i got super fkn fit paddling in the cold with all the rubber on!
His surfing bloody good but his paddling always stands out. He made the paddle out look so easy when it could have got ugly real quick. Seems like all that training pays off.
I remember getting to watch this session in person, me and my mate hiding behind one of the windmills trying to get out the way of the freezing wind and rain haha. Was sick getting to watch you and the bodyboarder trade waves on such a gnarly slab🤙
This could be my new fav vlog of yours and I pretty sure it's because of your wife natural reactions to your surfing and how you edited it to feel real organic by, for example chosing non distracting background music which volume didn't overpower your wife's reaction to your surfing and the sound of the waves and nature. Bravo!
Watch out for the foam: it can be deadly… if you get pushed into even deeper foam where you can’t get on top of by sitting up, you can suffocate. Happened to 5 Dutch very able surfers 2 years ago in a freak accident! Cheers for another great vid!
yeah, the surface can be tricky. Once I duck dived and landed under a loaf of seaweed and was stuck under it. I had to get off my board and slide next to my board and later exit.
Thought about Scheveningen and the 5 men who drowned right away when he started about paddling in the foam. Be careful out there Thanks for the great video 🙌
This is my favorite vlog of yours I've seen. First time ever hearing Celtic music paired with surfing, and the landscape shots were so awe-inspiring that I actually got unexpectedly emotional taking it all in. What an amazing place.
Love the glove rant!! A good tip for solo sessions in freezing weather is to bring a cooler full of hot water and leave it by your car when you go out. When you get in put your hands and feet in it to regain feeling, then you have enough dexterity to get your wetsuit unzipped (to unlock the car and get your suit/gloves/booties off)!
Loving these edited treasures from last year … Mahina & you are a great team. Musical selections perfect adding some humor for anyone insane enough to surf this frkn cold stuff … you don’t see Mahina out there do you? She’s sane, thankfully. Gorgeous slabs of geological formations! Thank you so much for sharing!
One response about unexpected emotion, was spot on, something about Celtic music does that to about everyone, my oldest son learned to play bagpipes, and every time I hear him play, I'm in tears, but back to this vlog, nice job Nate, crazy too, is that rock there looks like a quarry for castle building, too cool, this was definitely one of your best
E P I C vlog man. The end almost looks like where Thanos threw off Gamora for the Soul Stone, the "Ultimate Sacrafice". Look at me sounding like a movie diehard and i dont even like Avengers much, just couldnt help myself. That place at night with a storm is probably eerie as all hell. Epic break too, love seeing you be-friend a booger(as i am one myself!). Seemed like a chill down to earth dude. He charged it and got some bombs, those pits he was in prob were some gnarly views man. All with no booties or gloves sheeesh. The wifey is a legend for staying out and recording, thank you! Be safe guys!
You called him William as Mahina was filming him coming in. What incredible drone shots at the end. Crazy place. If rocks could talk, the giant waves they have seen. Gnarly. Thanks P.j.
When u surf real waves it unites surfers & bodyboarders, u kind of want others to b around cuz something could easily happen. Big ups to that dude for joining
The table like slab of the shoreline revealing the slab below. A bonafide slab break and a chill that could kill. A very artful presentation. I was mesmerized by the surroundings and in awe of the boldness to surf such a place. Well Done.
Cold cold cold! I used to surf all year round in UK until I tasted warmer foreign winter waves 🤣 Props to Mahina for staying out in the wet and cold to get your footage. "I'm committed to you babes." Sums up your gorgeousness as a couple 💕 As other comments have already said, it is so impressive that you're prepared to do such cold waves. Thanks for another great vid Nate. I hope you're able to surf again now and start creating new footage. Lots of love to both of you from the UK 🤙✨️🙏😍
what a cracking vid, cheers to the Aussie on the boogie, and cheers for saying 'legend' and 'unit' in our vernacular, I'm sure you're forgiven for forgetting his name ☺
@@NathanFlorence That's the best time of the year to come cos you can get swells from both the north and south and the water is still warm. The whole country fires. Highly recommend Northland, Raglan, Gisborne, Taranaki, Dunedin and The Catlins.
I’m not a surfer but a technical diver and this reminds me of a dive I did in Iceland. There is truly something special about the pain that makes the payoff unexplainable.
Gloves are good, not those five fingers…only lobster claws!…gets way cold over here…lows in the high 30’s… once it goes below 60 over here I’m the first one in the full gear, hood up…everything and I don’t peel nothing off until at least May! Great video!
@@0warami_7oo up here in New Jersey we all wear the lobster claws, they are warmer because your four fingers make the water warmer then individually, and you can get a big stroke when paddling.

@3:37 great different refreshing music to hear in a surf vlog... A+ though at no point I see credits to the song musician's etc. You should include credits in video or description. You just gotta get used to gloves...paddling isnt that bad. Pretty much all cold water surfers wear them. Great vid...incredible scenery and sketchy AF spot entry and exit. Highly interesting!
Nate, you & Mahina are Legends! Braving the cold with the body boarder to get Barreled. No pain, NO gain. Good on ya crew! Next C T tour stop. Ha . . .
That's a seriously difficult break. I'd say you'd need to watch it for a while then choose the correct take off point, either left or right, to stand any chance of making it, no matter how good you are. It's tempting but it will slam you if you take off in the peak. Respect to nath, Hawaiian dream boater has no need to be working hard or freezing cold. But hes taking on one of the most hardcore north Atlantic swells . Nathan will you be coming down to north Devon, north Cornwall ?
Yep spent most except some surf trips abroad surfing in cold water, Cornwall and now North Wales Started at 18 now 56 and still going mostly now body boarding .That paddle out with the rocks behind ,been there digging deep foam every where not seeming to be able to move forwards LOL .The water temp here now is 6 deg C Wales very annoying as we have had ground swell for 2 Weekes and i only have a 4/3 boots and gloves and can only last about 45 mins in the water but hay no competition for waves only me out there .On gloves i use 1.5mm and a tight fit just enough to take the edge off the cold but not hamper the paddling. Going in the water later on here i can watch from my lounge window and go when its at its best LOL.
Great video brother much love from PR! Those cliffs are so epic, it’s on my bucket list to camp on the edge of one of those super dramatic cliffs after a psycho surf seshh!! Thanks for the inspiration, best wishes brotha yeeeewww🤙🏽❤️
I was gonna make a critical comment on him nearly making his first two just losing a lot of speed hitting that transition at the bottom. So I checked myself as it's so cold and shallow. I would not do better, I'd probably do worse. Sick edit, thanks!

That's what I was thinking! Like at 8:11 that could've gone really nasty if the duckdive was mistimed, but Nate made it look so effortless!
Yeah the entry was sketchy with the second duck dive, timed well and with a bit of luck.
