- The Citarum River is dubbed as the dirtiest river in the world. Majalaya's factories have dumped roughly 280 tons of chemical waste into this critical waterbody every day. Despite its dilapidated condition, its waters irrigate farmlands which feed 30 million people across West Java. This is why the Indonesian government is trying to save the Citarum.
We embed with the Indonesian military on Operation Citarum Harum, a multi-million dollar cleanup operation that aims to transform this 270 kilometer long river back to its former glory. On this journey, we film with environmental activists on the frontlines fighting against illegal chemical discharge in their bid to reverse damage to the region's ecology.
In this battle to balance economic development and impending climate change, we discover factory owners investing in the future of sustainable waste disposal and individuals using artificial intelligence to save the Citarum.

My boss was involved in this project, and she invited me to a meeting with the military groups. They were absolutely incredible. Super organised, efficient and took their jobs extremely serious. The military's involvement was absolutely needed here, as it was also a business/corporate mafia problem. It wasn't just a technical, "let's clean up the river" problem. This is what happens in a lot of development/sustainability projects. Large corporations (foreign or domestic) come into under-developed areas, pollute and bully the locals into secrecy.
Same here, we had to write in the papers and awake the people before anythig was done and myself and others have unceasingly worked to clean up our rivers and many industrial plants had to be dismantled. There is still a lot to be done yet we have seen some improvement as the fish has started to come back. 🌹

All countries need to follow Indonesia example to clean up our environments. All countries, govts, military, police, etc need to work on improving our environments.

the main source of pollution on this river is not actually trash since mostly now already cleaned up but the waste from its surrounding textile industries. the government now enforces strict regulation to tackle this issue, the problem is, not every factory can afford expensive water treatment plant, so i think by giving them subsidy will accelerate the healing of this river.
I think the owners of the clothing industry need to pay for the capacity to clean the water
Why not have one govt own plant to handle all the smaller factory who can't afford their own waste water treatment plant.
the smaller factory gets charge a low set fee based on volume of waste for the clean up.
and by everyone making some contribution, the whole cost don't just settle on tax payers and at the same time small factories can compete on cost of production

As an indonesian i think we need more of this kind of work. Not only on rivers but every aspects like roads, villages, cities, etc.
I was horrified when I first learned about this, especially because people were still utilizing that water, but it's great that there are some people who are fighting back. I was really pleased to learn about the wax worms, I'd never heard of them before. I'm going to have to do more research on those little critters.

I'm a local villagers near majalaya, and yes, those textile industries majority just dump their waste water without any treatment to the river, as for the rubbish People used to throw it to the river or just dump it on the roadsides because they don't have any choice, our government doesn't give any facility for us where we can throw our rubbish Especially the Kabupaten Bandung region.
And last year there's another international media already shown to the world how worst the citarum condition at that time, and also how the kids DNA already polluted.
Please world, see our river, and help us, help our kids.
there's no landfills nearby? i live in rural areas in Semarang, there's some young guy that collect trash from home to home every 3 days then they sent to, my family would separate the trash from wet trash, and plastics that burnable. It's just cost 5K, we're very helpfull by that. while papers and glasses we sell to collectors who come once a month.

The problem is that we still throw garbage to the river system.. even when i drive down passing a bridge over a river there will be a car or motorcycle stopping by and throw a bag of rubbish to the river... it is sad that we still have this mindset of, " i only throw one bag, and the others still doing it so, so it doesn't matter." We should ponder more about our river system for our future children...

It's not just you guys. For whatever reason, people love throwing sharp broken cans, entire water bottles, broken balloons, cigarettes butts and boxes, broken toys, and other trash in my yard! I'm pretty sure that they litterally *don't even realize* that they're doing it. I'm constantly secretly cleaning it up. Yeah, some people in the US care so little about littering that they litterally pollute the yards of people that they visit with sharp potentially rusty medal can scrapes! And I have no protection against tetanus, due to a somewhat compromised immune system with a bad history of contracting disease from vaccines so it's even more messed up. (While it's fairly rare, such conditions do exist.) I've been secretly composting the coffee grinds, egg shells, non-dyed paper that had no exposure to cleaning chemicals, and paper towel rolls. To be fair, the entire family already uses old fruit and vegetable scrapes for our plants. I feel like most of the trash comes from guests...

@@december1720 Thank you for the video link. So mainly these polluting textile companies are subcontractors to the big brands like H&M (sweden), Uniqlo (Japan),etc2.
If the big brands just pulled out of Indonesia, they will find other subcontractors from other counties which will decrease of employment in textile Indonesia industries. However, the blames are not entirely to these companies. From the government, the companies, the workers, factories owners, all need a reform and law to be re-enforced. It is not an easy case.

But when it comes to environmental damage, especially in developing countries, western people tend to judge the country badly without seeing that the clothes they wear everyday contribute to environmental damage. This is also the same as the news about deforestation in Borneo because the people are planting oil palm. whereas all the ingredients they consume at Wallmart or other supermarkets all contain palm oil. this part why i say irony

Cleaning the river is only part of the solution, the bigger task is to establish a sustainable integrated waste management system by the local and municipality government. The problem in Indonesia is that there are no coordinated effort in establishing waste management system, as people do not have or little environmental awareness... good first step, still long way to go..

- Just a suggestion for Indonesian Government those Factories that cannot afford to install Water Treatment Facility, maybe the Indonesian Government can build a Common Water Treatment Plant to where All this Factories can tapp-in, they can charge them if they want for the Operational cost. with this the government can now make sure that All waters that will be drained on the river will be by government standard.
- Another thing maybe the Government can purchase those Long Reach Amphibious Excavators that they can used to dredge the river. the 1 I saw on the video is too small base on the interview they say it can only reach up to 3 meters. they can used this machinery not only on this river but all rivers in Indonesia.

Hats off to Alex, the manufacturer with a conscience n good business sense, the environmental groups, the monitors, military groups patrolling the rivers, country's leader for recognizing the urgency, scientists studying pollution impact n international organizations for funding. Environmental resurrection means humans must develop a respect for its environment, it's botanical n marine life as well as its terrestrial wildlife populations which no one mentioned except once in this entire series.

Went to Indonesia year 2017 on a cruise. Oh my😱 floating garbage greeted us when we arrived at the port of Java. Indonesian government should do something about it. Educate locals to be more responsible and participate actively on cleaning the environment. But udos to these man in uniforms who fight and cleanup this river. Hope everyone will follow

We’re still having some problems:
• Access to landfill, Some people don’t have the access to the landfills. Here we have to pay for it. Some people don’t even have money to fulfil their needed, let alone to pay for their garbages. So they tend to throw away their garbage to the river or burning it. Garbage bank is a good idea, but it’s hard to find them.
• Education, people start to throw away their garbage to its places BUT they forget to teach their kids about it. I’m so upset about it because it’s happening in my neighborhood. I clean up the ditches around my house regularly and i find kids snack packs, ice cream packs etc everytime.
• Household wastewater, it’s also my biggest problem. Unlike the developed countries which have sewerage systems, our wastewater goes straight to the river. Building sewerage systems for the whole country will be so expensive for the government and we won’t see it in anytime soon. I have a plan to build my own wastewater management system.
Citarum river can be restored . I believe in it cause Pasig river here in the Philippines was once already a dead river.... through government efforts, it is already coming back to life..

This just touch the tip of an ice-berg. Citarum pollutant mainly doesnt comes from the farmers (that just a scratch) the deep wound comes from textile / garment factory there, which is backing up by the higher ups, the governor did nothing, mayor did nothing till today.
Their generic answer, if we pull the trigger, they would just leave, and we would lost thousands workers.
I live in west java, works some months on one of the biggest textile factory, they dump most of their waste directly to the river.
