We should all be able to agree that indi titles like Vampire Survivors which sort of spawned a genre of its own, show that big budgets arent required for big success. I personally find that a lot of the indi games I enjoy seem to be free of modern politics and agendas which is a breath of fresh air atm. It's nice to just let a game be a game once in a while.
i often hear people trash talk the state of gaming these days, but they seem to only focus on "safe" big budget AAA titles, because the indie scene has been amazing over the last 10-15 years. some of my favorites have been indie titles. i'm stoked at where gaming is now.
On other platforms maybe, but the Switch is struggling when in comes to big budget cinematic AAA titles. There is an imbalance there. Indies have been putting AAA to shame for a while now. There has been so many good games proving that. Crow Country, Another Crab’s Treasure, Switch Up is brilliant at showcasing these games!
This is why this channel is awesome. You both look at indie games all the time on the Switch. The number of times I wonder what a particular game will be like on Switch, you guys always have a video on it. Honestly, you are mind readers!
Mark raving about Nine Sols everytime he gets the chance is bringing a smile to my face, it just shows how these Indie Devs are genuinely passionate about their projects. They really deserve all the love and recognition! Keep up the work and don't stop mentioning these Indie titles.
Nine Sols is at the top of my "when I allow myself to buy something cause I conquered a game in my backlog" list and I cannot wait 🙌🏻 Lovely vid to watch in the evening as always guys!
One of my favorite videos of the series. These past few years i have truly fell in love with indie games, i barely play AAA games now. Nine sols is one on this list that im very interested in trying, i just need to clear my metroidvania backlog a little bit first hehe
Another Crab’s Treasure is one of the most memorable games I’ve played this year. And giving the option to just use a gun and oneshot everything if you don’t feel like dealing with mechanics was just brilliant!
Thank you to the legend from Untold Tales to sponsor the whole series. And of course thank you to Mark and Glen. Thank you for another year with this channel. This has been my comfort food for quiet a while now. Many years to come hopefully ❤
Great thing about a lot of these indie games is the awesome prices you can get them for in the sales! I love Nintendo AAA but we all know that apart from the occasional 33% off we’re still paying full price for games as old (or even older ) than the switch itself.
I'll mention two games that you guys recommended in one of your videos: Imagine Earth (now 40% off by the way) is an amazing strategy/management game. Also very recently "Wildermyth", I couldn't agree more with your review, Mark, is just awesome.
Witchspring R is addicting! Highly recommend it as it is such a charming RPG. You can really train and become extremely powerful in the first few chapters if you wanted to grind stats.
Drova looks the most interesting to me. I love getting lost in a new world where they just kinda drop you off and let you go about the adventure your way.
The Drova resources discussion reminded me of playing KotOR, trying to work out how to squeeze EVERY credit from each emcounter to afford those endgame items! Great work gents, get well soon!
Im so happy that switch 2 will be backwards compatible, i can store all these on my wishlist and play them next year. Just picked up the wargroove games which look awesome
Bloom town looks really nice, not on my radar at all. I think Chained echoes deserves another shout out. Solo developer with a goal of creating a game that feels the way you remember games from your youth. It was a breath of fresh air and an incredible individual effort.
I think these Indie games really do itch more of that nostalgia feeling then the AAA games do. If your older these games definitely take you back to your childhood memories of games you played.
Two of the games that are on my younger siblings’s list for what games she wants to get are Nine Sols, and Little Kitty Big City, she just loves how both of them look.
I love that indie developers take more chances on storyline, game mechanics, and art style. They’re not all home runs, but there are loads of great indie titles out there. I think the graphics limitations of the Switch level the playing field for indie developers because games need good content and game play, not just amazing graphics. Cocoon was the best indie game I played this year. An innovative concept done very, very well. And super simple controls. Didn’t need to learn 8 buttons and have laser precision timing. Simple yet captivating gameplay.
I've had Little Kitty, Big City and Nine Sols on my "Need to Buy" games! I guess I don't play a lot of Triple A games and gravitate towards indie games. The game I was looking the most forward to this year was Eiyuden Chronicles - and I know it did (maybe still doesn't) have the best performance but I'm such a big fan of Suikoden I and II, that I had to pick up this spiritual successor!
Nine Sols presents the idea of Dao pretty well. Many will not agree with it but many will also find it reasonable, even if it is kind of cruel. It also has more soul than there are A's in multimillion dollar games
Hey SwitchUp guys! Just felt like I should tell you, the audio is uneven. I am deaf in my left ear, and I was wondering why I couldn't hear the right. Then I reversed the headphones around, so that slightly fixed it. Still thought you should know there's an audio issue, though!
I LOVE indie games. There are so many games I've wanted to try for years but couldn't because I don't PC game and really only play Nintendo consoles with a sprinkling of whatever PlayStation model my husband has, so when the switch came out it was like a godsend. I've never bought more games on a console and 80% are indie games. Such a delight.
I gotta say, you guys keeping the game title in the top corner while talking about it is top-notch. It's such a small detail, but I hate when videos let the title fade away, and you have to rewind to find it. Downloaded The Plucky Squire after watching. Love the content, keep it coming!
I haven't played ANY of these games (yet) so thanks for adding them to my wishlist... I reckon Nine Sols would be my first pick (But that might just be the Danny John Jules reference!)
Many indie developers put a lit of passion into what they do, and that makes their games. You can feel that when you play such games and it means more to a player, than the money figure spent on development.
The switch is the reason i have expanded my catalog to consist of a wide variety of games. It has made me really appreciate the smaller scale indie games. Before i was a big AAA guy but now i dont really bother with them anymore. Between having kids and the price of AAA games indie games have changed my life hahah.
This is a great reminder to go through my indie backlog during the holidays. So many gems that I played for a few hours and never finished (or never even started for that matter haha)
Long time lurker here. Just wanted to thank you for these videos, with two sick kiddos your videos have been a lifesaver in discovering new games to recover to!
I loved Little Kitty, Big City! So fun and inventive. Hearing that Another Crab’s Treasure got a big Switch patch, it might be time for me to finally dive into that.
As a 90s kid, see the PS1 art style used in a lot of indies to great effect, brings me a great hit of nostalgia. Goes to show you don't need 4k Ray tracing to make a hit!
Really glad to see Nine Sols getting a shoutout!! Red Candle Games went through the ringer with their last game because of Dumb Political BS that almost derailed them completely, so it's so sick that they pulled something like Nine Sols out in spite of it 😁
I enjoyed listening to you guys just chat about games for half an hour, you should do more long videos like this in the future if you have the time and inclination. I forgot about WitchSpring R, and how pretty the graphics are. It’s still a bit too expensive for me right now, but hopefully someday. Little Kitty Big City looks so fun too!
I think the Cat Quest games are awesome for what they cost and each one gets better. I like Zelda style games but can play these with my daughter shes only 3 but is getting to grips with the controls now
Not sure how small the studio is but I really enjoyed Golf Story in switch. Love the art style, the settings, the controls. One of my favorite games on Switch.
I think the great thing about indie studios is that they’re typically a lot less risk-averse than the big boys, giving rise to more creativity and originality (and experimentation), ending up as simply great and interesting games. So yeah, in many ways they’re the trend setters! Definitely got Nine Sols on my radar 👍🏻
I agree with this list! My favorites are Another Crab's Treasure (wonderful game mechanics), Nine Sols, Little Kitty Big City. I haven't tried WitchSpringR, but the game looks fantastic. Thanks for putting this list together!
I know these aren’t from 2024 but Spiritfarer ‘s story has stayed with me, Return of Obra Dinn is a great concept with unique features that is executed perfectly, Dredge has a great gameplay loop and The Excavation of Hobbs Barrow hit that point n click itch I had (until Broken Sword Reforged came out)
My last console before a switch was the GameCube, so it's a real novelty for me to be able to play these type of games that would never have gotten a disc release back in the day.
I used to be mad at you guys for making my backlog grow so much. But honestly whatever game you recommended I ended up being happy with so now I just enjoy the ride. Anyway, to answer your question: Chained Echoes puts a lot of AAA games to shame and is one of my all time favorite titles for the Switch.
So I actually picked up both Bloomtown and Galaxyland about 2 weeks ago. Your positive coverage of them was a big factor in the buying decision. I'm really interested in Witchspring, but my finances are completely tapped into new year. Although I wouldn't say it's putting AAA to shame, I'm maybe halfway through Sword of the Vagrant, and it's been quite enjoyable so far.
Love the indie themed video. Especially love the transition from your content to then having both ear buds with sound during sponsor videos haha. Audio out of the left is great
I picked up Drova after your reviews and am captivated. I just added a few more to my wishlist. Thanks for giving us a look at these lesser-known games.
Most of this year for me was cleaning out my backlog or playing splatoon3 and ff14. So I didn't really play many new games this year. That said there is one specific one I should point out. It's sadly not on the switch but I still think I should point it out Rabbit & Steel, it's a sort of bullet hell game with some inspiration from MMO's like ff14 with how your attacks work and how the enemies attack. Raid mechanics so to speak. You don't see that many when playing alone but when you play it with even one other person, spread and stack mechanics be abound. It's also has a nice art style, and music. Emerald lake being super catchy.
When i'm thinking about the best A titled games then The Plucky Squire and Nine Sols coming to my mind defienitily I love a metroidvania platformer game's Nine Sols art style and gameplay I need to get and play Nine Sols someday! 😊❤
You broskis are awesome! Backlogs continues to grow lol My Nintendo switch is older than both my kids. Has been on so many trips. Takin so many falls and still runs like a champ. Hope the switch 2 is just as durable
So happy to see Plucky Squire here. I LOVED the game. I won't say it's top tier, but boy was it such a delightful experience. Jumping out of the book is such a new concept for me, since I don't play that many games 😅. What really grabbed my attention was the art style, I really loved the comic book-esque sort of look and feel. A couple moments do fall short because the text would cut off or the combat was a little wonky, I still love this game. Nine Sols will be on my wishlist for the foreseeable future. Red Candle games have made truly interesting story based games with Detention and Devotion so I am excited to see them jump to metroidvania and see what they've been cooking.
For a moment, I literally had to check the connection of my laptop speakers to make sure the right one wasn’t disconnected haha! Anyways, all good, lads. Audio issues can happen! So, definitely, The Plucky Squire caught my attention; that cartoonish style combined with 3D/2D platforming gameplay looks interesting and fun! Also, I think Conscript and its World War theme might not quite fit with the end-of-year celebrations, but it does seem scary and like a solid, unique option for those of us who enjoy the horror genre. And Nine Souls could easily be one of the best new 'Metroidvania' right now-a gorgeous and cool game! I just hope they keep improving the performance with a couple more patches. Go indie developers!
Always good to see someone praising the indie games so many amazing, quality games, I bought drova recently after hearing what you thought about it, what an amazing games as always you cover all switch and that is yet another plus in switch ups favour...
Conscript is one of the best games you lads have put us on to this year. Its amazing....harrowing....but amazing. Honorable mention for Animal Well. Hands down my game of the year
My favorite indies are the ones who you can tell really care about the experience and keep patching and updating as needed to make it the best they can
Honestly, 90% of the games I play on my switch these days are indies. Even with first party Nintendo, I prefer the small budget experimental games generally, Emio had the perfect balance of indie uniqueness with that big budget polish. Hope we see more games bridging that gap in the next few years, especially with Switch 2!
It wouldn't be a proper holiday season without 12 Days of SwitchUp. You are the main reason my backlog is huge but I have no complaints. Merry Christmas guys PS. I guess it's time to buy Bloomtown
I find it interesting that this is the only channel I've come across that covers a majority of indie games that make it to Switch. If not for your review, I would have passed up Conscript completely. I have both the physical and digital so its been a year of double dipping. Crow Country is also one I've been anticipating since it was announced and I'd like to see more RE-style games come next year. Some honorable mentions I'd like to recognize are Alisa, Penny's Big Breakaway and Pepper Grinder🍻
So many of these games are on my wishlist! There are so many good games on the switch. One that doesn’t get much mention is She Wants Me Dead - it’s often on sale for 89p and is so much fun.
Great coverage as always guys. You mention during the Plucky Squire segment that not many big studios take risks with changing up the format of their IPs other than Nintendo which I agree with but got me thinking, what other big IPs could change their format up? Many of the well known franchises have IPs that are locked to a gamestyle (Elder Scrolls, GTA, GoW, etc). Intrigued to know your thoughts on for what IPs could have a “switch up” and therefore it could make such significant changes? Cheers now.
Love this channel's love for indie games! I've been pleasantly surprised by many I've played just this year alone, Bloomtown in particular.

The indie I've enjoyed most this year has been Wargroove. A bit old, I know. This year, Dream Tactics captured my eyes. I'll have to give it a go soon.

Decentralization and indie are the way of the future. We have the grid that can do it now
I know these aren’t from 2024 but Spiritfarer ‘s story has stayed with me, Return of Obra Dinn is a great concept with unique features that is executed perfectly, Dredge has a great gameplay loop and The Excavation of Hobbs Barrow hit that point n click itch I had (until Broken Sword Reforged came out)
Love 12 days of SwitchUp! 12 is a great number…so is 1….cuz I just need 1 switch OLED for Xmas :)
Audio out of the left is great
Soooo many good games! My backlog is just screwed 😵💫
After Stray, would like to play Little Kitty Big City. Maybe cleaning my backlog a bit before 😅
Conscript and Nine Sols look pretty good.
It's sadly not on the switch but I still think I should point it out
Rabbit & Steel, it's a sort of bullet hell game with some inspiration from MMO's like ff14 with how your attacks work and how the enemies attack.
Is “Human Soup” a mashup of Carrion & Slime San?? A rogue-lite, body horror, lovecraftian, cozy game?
You broskis are awesome! Backlogs continues to grow lol My Nintendo switch is older than both my kids. Has been on so many trips. Takin so many falls and still runs like a champ. Hope the switch 2 is just as durable
Bloomtown is definitely on my radar, especially with the Persona-like singing during combat music
Only getting audio in the left ear for this one, boys
The way you talked about drive convinced me to add it to my backlog
I've been late to your 12 days of swithup videos because work's been a mess lately. Still enjoying them. Thanks for all your awesome content
Hands down my game of the year
My favorite indies are the ones who you can tell really care about the experience and keep patching and updating as needed to make it the best they can
I got Nine Sols the day You reviewed it, it's amazing! So hard in some parts (especially optional minibosses for me) but half way through.
Conscript has been super fun. I wouldnt have discovered it if it wasnt for you two. I hope both of you feel better soon.
Hades is one of my favorite triple A games. The story Telling and progression in the game is really good. Gameplay is amazing as well.
It wouldn't be a proper holiday season without 12 Days of SwitchUp. You are the main reason my backlog is huge but I have no complaints. Merry Christmas guys
PS.
Why are you speaking only through my left speaker? :P
Spiritfarer may not have been made in 20224 but it's still an Indie gem to play this year.
Nine Sols looks awesome - I need to chew through some of that backlog though! Hope you guys get well soon, Happy Holidays everyone!
